Our dairy and cheesemaking team
On muscle memory“Who wants to be a cheesemaker when they grow up?” I asked a group of Beyond the Barn campers this summer. One girl timidly raised her hand and said, “maybe…” Looking at this group of 13-17 year olds, I thought back to when I was their age. Being a cheesemaker wasn’t on my mind then, either. I had spent summers working on a strawberry farm, but it had just been a summer job. I left for college set on fi nding a career.
Yet somehow the seeds from those summers grew into a major in agri-culture, and at the end of my sophomore year at UVM, I was hired as assistant cheesemaker at Shelburne Farms.
On my fi rst day the head cheesemaker gave me written instructions for hauling the milk. It was 47 bullet point steps from start to fi nish. The task was overwhelming at fi rst, but over time all of those steps became a part of my muscle memory.
In cheesemaking, farming, and food production in general, there are a lot of repetitive tasks and routine. While your hands are busy your mind is left to wander. Many mornings I refl ect on my journey and feel so fortunate to live and work in a beautiful place — one that fosters a love and respect for agriculture, allows me to practice my craft, and one that, perhaps, will inspire a child to see a future in agriculture and cheesemaking.

Our family has been making jam since 1976 based on
a simple idea: taste over haste. We use only fruit and
pure cane sugar boiled down the “old fashioned way”.
Shelburne Farms recognized early on the importance
of off ering products with great fl avor and simple
ingredient lists like ours. They have enthusiastically
supported us by serving our jams in the Inn and
sampling our product in the farm store.
Making jam is hard work, but it’s still a dream job. Every day cus-
tomers tell us they haven’t had jams like that since they were in their grandmother’s
kitchens. And we love inviting local farmers into the kitchen on sunny afternoons to
work together to create new products that share the delicious fl avors of Vermont.
