WelcomeAt Sheffield Theatres, we’re proud to welcome so many extraordinary actors and artists to perform on our stages. So far, the 40th anniversary season has seen Dominic West, Clarke Peters, Francesca Annis and Deborah Findlay take to the Crucible stage and, this spring, we’re thrilled to welcome back Henry Goodman and Barbara Flynn (in our Michael Frayn Season) and John Simm (in Pinter’s masterpiece Betrayal).

In the Lyceum, a packed programme of musicals, drama, children’s shows and comedy brings a host of familiar faces including Connie Fisher in Bernstein’s Wonderful Town, Rhydian Roberts in the uplifting Grease and Gareth Gates in the exuberant Hair.

Over the summer, the Theatres and Tudor Square will be bursting with spectacular events including The International Student Drama Festival, Sheffield Sizzler and a variety of Olympic celebrations. There are also plenty of opportunities for people to experience the arts in new ways including a host of workshops, Behind the Curtains - a promenade performance for schools and families - and the return of our Summer School in July.

We hope to welcome you to Sheffield Theatres soon.

‘I picked Charlotte up and lifted her high up, high up, and then down and up. Do you remember how she laughed?’

‘Everyone laughed’

As Jerry and Emma reminisce about times gone by, it’s clear they both yearn for the security of the past.

After a seven year affair, their final meeting brings to light the destructiveness of their betrayal and how a single moment in time would change the lives of everyone around them forever.

John Simm returns to the Crucible stage alongside Colin Tierney in Harold Pinter’s heartbreaking comment on love and relationships.

Opera North

RuddigoreBy Gilbert & Sullivan

Thu 31 May – Sat 2 June

The topsy-turvy road to love.

Gilbert and Sullivan make merry at the expense of Victorian melodrama in this, one of their most imaginative creations.

Sir Despard Murgatroyd is a man under pressure. He has inherited a witch’s curse forcing him to commit a crime a day or die in agony. So it’s a huge relief when shy Robin Oakapple is revealed as his long-lost elder brother – the true inheritor of the curse. This revelation scuppers Robin’s chances with the prim Rose Maybud, but his troubles really start when his feeble crimes drag his exasperated ancestors back from the dead.

Opera North’s much-loved and universally acclaimed production perfectly captures the wonderful spirit of Gilbert & Sullivan’s topsy-turvy invention.

The Lady in the VanBy Alan Bennett With Nichola McAuliffe (Surgical Spirit)

Wed 6 – Sat 9 June

Alan Bennett has a very unusual neighbour. Parked at the bottom of his garden is a van. With a lady in it.

The lady in the van is Miss Shepherd. Alan knows very little about her. She used to drive ambulances in the war, might have been a nun, sells pencils and pamphlets and has an unexplained aversion to piano music. But somehow she lives in the playwright’s garden and has done for years.

Starring Nichola McAuliffe who played Sheila Sabatini in ITV’s Surgical Spirit and who won an Olivier Award for her role in Kiss Me Kate (RSC), The Lady in the Van was written by Alan Bennett, one of the nation’s best-loved playwrights. His plays include The History Boys, Talking Heads and The Madness of George III.

The Price of Everything

Fri 8 June 7.45pm

How much is beauty worth? What will people pay for an air guitar? Can I have a glass of milk?

These urgent questions and others are answered in The Price of Everything, a performance lecture about value. Daniel Bye’s whistlestop tour of bizarre facts and impassioned arguments is occasionally shambolic and often biased - but always a joy to watch.

Comic, provocative, and possibly a tiny bit sad, this show is a must if you’ve ever wondered about the difference between the price of an object and its value.

Thu 12 July 1.30pm & 7.30pm

An Opera in a League of its own.

Julian Joseph and Mike Phillips’ compelling jazz opera tells the fast-paced story of Negro League baseball players and their jazz compatriots, struggling to achieve their dreams in a time of segregation.

Inspired by the era of Ellington and Armstrong, Joseph’s swinging score offers a lively evening of home runs, peanuts and Cracker Jack, which is great fun for all the family!

Described as ‘undeniably thrilling and illuminating’ by The Guardian, Shadowball features Julian Joseph, Cleveland Watkiss, The Julian Joseph Quintet and a cast of local children.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s

South PacificDirected by Bartlett Sher

Tue 24 July – Sat 4 August

‘If you don’t already have a ticket purchase one immediately!’ Daily Mail

This breathtaking Lincoln Center Theater production reinvented Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical. It swept the board at the Tony Awards, played for two years on Broadway and was televised across America. Now the enchanting, smash-hit musical comes to the Lyceum Theatre for two weeks only, following its sell-out performances at London’s Barbican.

Metropolitan Opera Director and Winner of the Tony Award for Best Director, Bartlett Sher, directs a stellar cast and live orchestra of 50 in this sensational show, including British musical theatre stars Matthew Cammelle (Phantom of the Opera) and Rebecca Thornhill (Singin’ In The Rain at the National Theatre).

Considered one of the finest musicals ever written, the score includes Some Enchanted Evening and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.

Don’t miss this chance to see one of the greatest musicals of all time.

Madame Butterfly

Tue 18 – Sat 22 September

Innocence, love and betrayal unfold in the picturesque gardens of a Japanese Villa. Butterfly is fragile, unworldly and prepared to sacrifice everything for the love of the handsome American, Lieutenant Pinkerton. He deserts her and their child, only to return years later with his new wife. Abandoned and betrayed, Butterfly is left with only one honourable course of action.

Julian Clary is looking for love and he’s not leaving town empty handed...

Master of camp, Julian Clary, is scouring the land in search of love. Chicago

Mon 24 – Sat 29 September

‘Murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery…all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts’. So begins the international award-winning musical, Chicago.

Based on real life events back in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and, together with Cell Block rival, double-murderess Velma Kelly, fights to keep herself from death row with the help of smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn.

Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score includes All That Jazz and Razzle Dazzle. With six Tony, two Olivier, one Grammy, two Bafta and six Academy Awards, Chicago truly is ‘The sharpest, slickest show on the block’ The Times.

It would be a crime to miss it.
