WelcomeWe’re delighted to let you know about our spring season at Sheffield Theatres.

It’s beyond thrilling that The Full Monty is coming home to Sheffield in February with our own production - the world premiere of a new stage version written by Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the hit film back in 1997.

We have two further world premieres in the season: Mike Bartlett’s, Bull, and, This is My Family, written specially for us by Tim Firth (the author of Calendar Girls). In the Crucible Theatre, D.H. Lawrence’s classic The Daughter-in-Law is directed by Paul Miller (Democracy), whilst The History Boys, a play that’s set in our city, takes to the stage in May.

In the Lyceum we’re thrilled to welcome Blood Brothers, The Mousetrap, Propeller and Matthew Bourne - as well as Dolly Parton’s brand new musical 9 to 5!

2012 has been a fantastic year for us. Sheffield Theatres’ productions were seen in the West End and on the London fringe. We received four nominations for our shows in the Theatre Awards UK. Thank you for your continued support which allows us to maintain the quality of the work on our stages and ensure that the city remains at the forefront of the country’s cultural ecology.

Northern Ballet return to Sheffield Theatres with an exciting new full length ballet, The Great Gatsby, adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.

On New York’s Long Island, in the heady indulgent days of the 1920s, Nick Caraway comes to know his infamous neighbour Jay Gatsby – a mysterious millionaire with a secret past and a penchant for lavish parties. As the sparkling façade of Gatsby’s world begins to slip away, Caraway comes to see the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lie beneath.

English Touring Opera

In many ways Mozart’s most perfect opera, Così fan tutte is a touching comedy of innocence and experience about unfaithfulness, desire and love. This new period production is sung by a remarkable cast, including ETO favourites Laura Mitchell, Paula Sides, and Kitty Whately (Rosina in ETO’s The Barber of Seville in 2012).

Simon Boccanegra is English Touring Opera’s first new Verdi production for several years. It tells the story of a once ruthless pirate (the title role, played by Craig Smith) who is made ruler of the medieval republic of Genoa and has to fight off opposition from his spiteful father-in-law and the leader of his own party (Grant Doyle, who played Figaro in ETO’s The Barber of Seville).

Music in the Round celebrates a wealth of different music this spring.

A jam-packed Mozart mini-festival, exploring the work of the best-loved composer of all time, (Friday 1 – Sunday 3 March); percussionists O Duo, ‘brimming with style and panache’, present an engaging and virtuosic performance on a host of instruments (Wednesday 13 March); Theatre of the Ayre performs a selection of Renaissance composer John Dowland’s most personal and direct songs (Thursday 24 January), and globally renowned harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock (Wednesday 6 March) plays Bach.

The series includes audience favourites performed by resident group Ensemble 360, as well as a range of engaging and insightful talks, and opportunities to find out more about the music and musicians.
