WelcomeWe’re delighted to let you know about our spring season at Sheffield Theatres.

It’s beyond thrilling that The Full Monty is coming home to Sheffield in February with our own production - the world premiere of a new stage version written by Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the hit film back in 1997.

We have two further world premieres in the season: Mike Bartlett’s, Bull, and, This is My Family, written specially for us by Tim Firth (the author of Calendar Girls). In the Crucible Theatre, D.H. Lawrence’s classic The Daughter-in-Law is directed by Paul Miller (Democracy), whilst The History Boys, a play that’s set in our city, takes to the stage in May.

In the Lyceum we’re thrilled to welcome Blood Brothers, The Mousetrap, Propeller and Matthew Bourne - as well as Dolly Parton’s brand new musical 9 to 5!

2012 has been a fantastic year for us. Sheffield Theatres’ productions were seen in the West End and on the London fringe. We received four nominations for our shows in the Theatre Awards UK. Thank you for your continued support which allows us to maintain the quality of the work on our stages and ensure that the city remains at the forefront of the country’s cultural ecology.

‘My son’s my son till he ta’es him a wife...’

It’s 1912 in a Derbyshire mining town and strike action looms. But it’s strife at home that hurts all the more. After their long courtship the Gascoignes’ short honeymoon is well and truly over.

Ambitious Minnie is still trying to disentangle miner Luther from his mother’s apron strings when a pre-marital dalliance makes a reappearance and blows the marriage apart. Will his mother have to pick up the pieces? Or will events at the pit decide all their fates for them?

The bonds between a mother and her sons, between husband and wife, between desire and freedom, are stretched to breaking point.

One of the greatest plays of the twentieth century, by the author of Sons and Lovers.

The Thing about PsychopathsWritten by Ben Tagoe Directed by Rod Dixon

Mon 11 – Tue 12 March 7.45pm

Britain. 2013. Times are hard, but the money’s still out there if you know where to look and are prepared to gamble. Whether it’s prison or the corporate world, there are rules to be followed. Only the fittest survive. It’s every man for himself.

A searing, funny and thought-provoking new play from Ben Tagoe (Cold Turkey at Nana’s and Bittersweet Sunshine), The Thing about Psychopaths asks important questions about power and empathy in modern Britain.

Money... The Game ShowWritten and directed by Clare Duffy

Fri 15 – Sat 16 March 7.45pm

Before the financial crisis of 2008, Casino and Queenie were hedge fund managers. Now, in an inspired - or desperate - career move, they’ve turned to performance art to share their stories of how to make (and lose) billions from economic downturn.

Playing with £10,000 in real pound coins, you are invited to bet long, short and hedge as Casino and Queenie guide you through high stake games, demonstrating how the world’s economic system came to the brink of collapse.

Money... The Game Show is a playful and politically sharp look at the roots of the financial crisis and its impact, and asks the big questions: What is money? What is it worth? What happens if we stop believing in it?

The Mousetrap

Mon 4 – Sat 9 March

A classic. A landmark. A legend.

The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre - with almost 25,000 performances it’s a play to be proud of. To celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, it’s going on tour for the first time, complete with a star cast.

The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed.

In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

English Touring Opera

Mozart, Così fan tutteVerdi, Simon Boccanegra

Mon 8 – Tue 9 April 7.45pm

In many ways Mozart’s most perfect opera, Così fan tutte is a touching comedy of innocence and experience about unfaithfulness, desire and love. This new period production is sung by a remarkable cast, including ETO favourites Laura Mitchell, Paula Sides, and Kitty Whately (Rosina in ETO’s The Barber of Seville in 2012).

Simon Boccanegra is English Touring Opera’s first new Verdi production for several years. It tells the story of a once ruthless pirate (the title role, played by Craig Smith) who is made ruler of the medieval republic of Genoa and has to fight off opposition from his spiteful father-in-law and the leader of his own party (Grant Doyle, who played Figaro in ETO’s The Barber of Seville).

Yes Prime Minister

Mon 29 April – Sat 4 May

Following two sell-out West End seasons, the original writers of the classic BBC TV series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this anniversary production of Yes Prime Minister. Last seen at the Lyceum Theatre in 2011, Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back in this hilarious play.

In a world of spin, BlackBerrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge?

Propeller in association with The Touring Partnership

The Taming of the ShrewBy William Shakespeare

Wed 8 – Sat 11 May

‘I am not what I am’

Two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of the beautiful Bianca, whilst gold-digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate, sight-unseen. The difference between marrying for love and marrying for money, however, becomes increasingly difficult to judge. This brash, brutal and darkly comic story pulls no punches.

One thing is certain – nobody does Shakespeare like Propeller.

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty

Tue 21 – Sat 25 May

Sleeping Beauty sees Matthew Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of ballet masterworks that started with Nutcracker! and the international smash hit, Swan Lake.

Our story begins at the christening of Princess Aurora in 1890, a time when fairies and vampires fed the gothic imagination, before moving forward in time to the modern day.

Sleeping Beauty features designs by Olivier Award-winners Lez Brotherston (Set and Costumes) and Paule Constable (Lighting) as well as Sound Design by Paul Groothuis that will take the audience into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score in specially recorded surround sound.

Matthew Bourne’s haunting new production is a gothic romance for all ages; a supernatural love story that even the passage of time cannot hinder.

‘Demolishing convention, bestriding art forms from ballet to musical comedy to film, Bourne’s work isn’t just high-brow or low-brow. It’s all-brow’ Time Magazine

‘I’m a Jew. I’m small. I’m homosexual. And I live in Sheffield. I’m f**ked’.

A levels may be over, but for one set of unruly pupils, their education is far from finished.

Back in lessons to train for entrance exams, the boys find themselves caught between two opposing styles of teaching. Eccentric Hector leads with a flamboyance that brings everything to life, while cynical Irwin’s been brought in by the Head to provide a ruthless route to Oxbridge. But with love, sex and university on their minds, the question is, will any of them make the grade?

The History Boys by Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s favourite comedies, full of stunning one-liners and teenage anxieties.
