The guild has booked with a facility in Plymouth. ‘Genera- tions’ is located on 1500 Douglas Drive in Plymouth. It is a very easy drive from Sheboygan and is handicapped accessible. The facility is “FREE”, plus some custodial fees. There is a chef on staff for lunch, and we get to request the menu. Lucy Marcks-Haack and Helen Schroader have done some mea- suring, and they believe that we can make the space work although the facility is about 500 square feet smaller than Alliance Church. As a result, we have room for only 9 vendors, and there will be no bed turning demonstration this year. Laura reports that most of the committee positions have been filled with the exception of a quilt show assistant chairman, a quilt registra- tion assistant chairman and a quilt check-in and out assistant chairman. Publicity flyers are being circulated. However, we are depending on all of our members to advertise our show through word of mouth to their friends, relatives and co-workers. We are hoping for a huge attendance. New venue for September quilt show; event moving to Plymouth location

Presidents’ messageGreetings guild members,

It appears as though 2013 is the year of change for our guild. First, for the first time in many years, our guild quilt show is going to be heldat a new location. The Intergenerational Coalition in Plymouth will beour hosts for our fall guild show. Laura Dulmes, our quilt show chair-person, has been doing a fantastic job of handling the transition withtremendous help from several guild members.

Second, our guild meetings have been rearranged a bit to try andincorporate news, committee reports, show and tell, and programming ina different order. We have also been having gift card drawings formembers who wear their name badges or for members who bring some-thing for show and tell. Our members have responded very well to thesechanges, andwe are gladto have suchhappy feed-back on themeetingstructure.

Third, ourbylaws havebeen re-viewed andrevised by acommitteeled by JackieFritsch and Bonnie Doyle. Their hard work has paid off with an updatedbylaws document that is clearer and more accurate than our old edition. We will be having a vote to accept the new bylaws at our May and Junemeetings.

Fourth, our new guild website is up and running. Terri Koch, JeanRutkowski, and Jackie Fritsch have all volunteered their time andenergy to help make the new website a great resource for our guild.

Fifth, there have been changes in leadership for some of our commit-tees. Barb Jaeger has resigned as the leader of the challenge blocks, andKay Huibregtse has resigned her leadership of the At Risk Baby project. These two projects have been wonderful for our guild, and we will misstheir contributions and leadership very much.

We have been very impressed with how our members are adapting tothe changes brought forward over this last year. It has been a pleasure tohave the privilege of leading this wonderful group of quilters.

Betty Abel, a guild charter member, died onApril 1. She was 88 years old. Betty taughtquilting at Lakeshore Technical School and

various quilt shops for many years. She was aninspiration to many of us.

Nimble Thimbles

Nimble Thimbles have been busy. We havetaken on the challenge blocks for this year. InJanuary’s snowstorm, five of us made it to MySister’s Quilt Shoppe and picked out fabric for thechallenge blocks. Then in February’s snowstorm, five of us made it to Ann Lubinski’s house, and wecut and packaged the fabric and instructions for thechallenge blocks.

We chose a black fabric with white dots orwhite with black teardrops fabric. We will allow a4 1/2" inch jewel tone fabric to be added. Finishedblocks should be 12 1/2 by 12 1/2. So, pick upyour challenge block fabric at the meetings and besure to wash the fabric before you begin. We havehad some really interesting block designs returnedto us. You may use any method you want finish theblock.

We will make a poster board to display at themeetings so everyone can get an idea.

We want to thank all the guild members who

have made this project a grand success. The com-mittee was powerless without your help.

We are at the stage when the three of us areturning the leadership over to a younger member. We hope someone will step forward and take thechairmanship. That person could go with us to takethe quilts to the hospital and see the results of ourwork. (We have heard that there is a special personwilling to chair this committee and that makes ushappy.)

These quilts mean so much to the families whoreceive them and the hospital personnel who sharethem with the at-risk babies. The date for thebrunch is June 4, 2013. After that date, the newcommittee will be in charge.

This project was started in 1990 by Carol Bahrand the Friendship Club. The club gave up theproject organization in 1997, and that is when wetook over. During the 16 years we have chaired thiscommittee, we have produced 3,125 quiltsthrough March, 2013.

Keep up the good work for the next crew. Yours in quilting, Diane Radke, Carol Skrube and Kay Huibregtse

Women Make A Difference Our organization is having a spring collection to

help the women of Nicaragua sew clothes for 18inch American Girl Dolls. This project helps toempower these women as economic contributors, educators, and community leaders.

The items desired would include fabric; weprefer 1 yard minimum. We also need lace, buttons, rick rack, thread and braid or trim.

Please bring items to our monthly meetings orJune’s home.

We also need sewing machines--all kinds, in andor out of cabinets, treadle, working or non working.

Machines may be delivered to the Camo QuiltProject building located at 439 Factory Street inPlymouth. Call Linda Wieck at 920-627-3460 todetermine her hours of operation or call June Smasalat 920-894-2867 to drop a machine off at her home.

You can find more information on this projectand pictures of the doll clothes these women createat www.chicanica.org. Thank you for your supportfor this project.

Member spotlight: To recognize those who contribute their

time and talent to our communities: Terri KochBeing around Terri Koch is always interesting.

In 2002, we were in Paducah at the quilt museum.I was in the gift shop, when Terri hugged me andexclaimed, “I got her! I got her!” It was Kay En-gland that she ‘got’. Terri had arranged for her tocome to a meeting for a lecture and workshop.

Our queen of the e-mail blast has been a guildmember since 1995. Terri was afraid to enter any ofher quilting projects into our show at that time. Shefelt she could not show her work because everyoneelse was so good. Since Terri started sewing with 4-H when she was in the sixth grade and beganquilting when she was 19, she was hardly a begin-ner. Of course, having Ann Floriano as an instruc-tor helped her to hone the skills she learned earlier.

Terri has gone on to make beautiful quilts suchas a gorgeous wedding ring quilt for her daughterand a quilt of rainbow colors and geometrics for herson and his wife.

And the baby quilts did follow those weddingquilts. Terri has made some particularly beautifulbaby quilts for those grand kids and perfected herskills, especially free motion. She has crafted sockmonkey quilts, athletic dinosaurs, a farm-themedquilt and a ballerina quilt for grandchildren, Char-lotte, Leah, Ethan and Asher.

As for sewing machines, Terri has more thanone. She has a Singer feather-weight, a 1973Singer, a Janome, a Pfaff and a Bernina. A quilterhas to have more than one, just in case one shouldneed to go in to the shop.

Terri is a spark plug of the guild. She wasprogram chair in 2002, quilt show co-chair andquilt show chair. Terri did not let the cruise to Italythat her husband planned, disrupt the quilt show. She had in place a system that kept all of thecommittees on track to produce a successful show.Terri and Ralph even enjoyed the trip he planned.

Terri and June Smasal were co-vice presidentsand moved up to co-presidents in 2007. Terri evenmanaged to be secretary for 3 or 4 years. She hasalso done menbership with Katchen Ringelstetterand Jackie Williams for several years. That waswhen membership started two new clubs, NimbleThimbles and LooseThreads. What a super way toinvolve and include new members.

Terri, our resident techno-expert, is also thesource of the many “helpful hints” on quilting and(can you believe it?) ironing that frequently appearin the newsletter. She loves to surf the net to findhints to improve her quilting skills and has beengenerous in sharing them with the rest of us via thenewsletter.

Terri has been to Paducah six times and also tothe shows in Des Moines and Grand Rapids. Shealso loves retreats and when she’s at a retreat, shesews, sews, sews. I know, I’ve been there andwatched—awestruck.

Now, we can’t have you thinking that all thiswoman does is quilt. Besides taking care of herimmediate family, she cared for her husband’smother for five years. She has worked at St. Nicho-las Hospital for 38 years in various capacities. Sheis now working there as an inhalation therapist..

Wait, I’m not done!! She hosts Wendy Gilbert’soriginal group every Thursday evening, goes toBible study at her church, plays Mahjong twice amonth, and attends the UFO Club at The SewingBasket (her favorite hangout).

Terri’s contributions to our guild are priceless.Thank you, Terri!

BOARD MEETINGApril 3, 2013

Attendance (17): Laura Dulmes, Quilt ShowChairperson; Char Stipe, Member-at-Large; RosieButeyn, Co-President; June Smasal, Kiel Riverside,Appraisers; Kay Huibregtse, At-Risk Babies; BarbJaeger, Challenge Blocks; Terri Koch,Needlesmiths; Carol Arpke, Fabric Fanatics; BonnieDoyle, Friendship Club; Carol Carriveau; Treasurer;Jackie Fritsch, Nimble Thimble; Sarah Hawkins, CoPresident; Laura Lemmerman, Co Vice-President;Betty Kluck, The Loose Threads, Diane Radke, At-Risk Babies; Kathy Ross, Co-Vice President; JudyPrull, Secretary

The meeting was called to order by PresidentRosie Buteyn at 6:00 at My Sister’s Quilt Shoppe.

The Secretary’s Report was given by Judy Prull. It was approved by the board with a motion fromLaura Dulmes and a second from Bonnie Doyle.

The Treasurer’s Report was presented to theboard by Carol Carriveau. It was accepted by theboard with a motion from June Smasal and CharStipe seconded the motion.

The program committee has speakers booked forthe entire year. In August there will be a colorworkshop and the committee had a very favorableresponse about a workshop on scraps from JudyGauthier. They are checking into setting up aworkshop with her.

The At-Risk Baby Quilts had a very poor turnoutfor their workshop. The entire At -Risk Committeehas tendered their resignation as of June 1st. TheBoard is now looking for a club or group of indi-viduals to step up and take on this project. It is sucha worthwhile endeavor that the Board does not wantto see it fall by the wayside.

The Winter Retreat had 21 participants andcontinues to be self- supporting. Everyone had agreat time and the next one will be held in October. If you are eligible do not forget to sign up for thescholarship for the two day retreat in October.

We will be having a change of venue for the quiltshow. The church has increased its fees signifi-cantly resulting in little or no profit for the guildmaking the change necessary. The show will nowbe held at Growing Generation, 1500 DouglasDrive, Plymouth, Wisconsin. This will result insome changes to the show but nothing we cannot

adapt to and turn into a positive for everyone in-volved.

The guild will again be taking a bus to the QuiltExpo. More details will be shared at the meeting.Sign-up sheets will be available.

The guild by-laws have undergone a make overthanks to Jackie Fritsch, Bonnie Doyle and JanTjaden. There have not been any major changes. Thefocus was mainly changing the language to be moregender neutral and address the inclusion of co-officers and co-chair people. This will be availableon the website and the changes will be presented attwo meetings for the membership before it will bevoted on in June.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 with a motionfrom June Smasal and a second from Kathy Ross. Our next meeting will be at The Sewing Basket inPlymouth on July 3, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted.Judy Prull, Secretary

Friendship Club

Friendship Quilters have been enjoying ourmonthly meetings with a cooperative effort on the2013 raffle item projects. Along with choosing thebest use for our squares, it has taken a “group effort”to come up with the finished treasures.

In addition to regular show and tell, our meetingsinclude a variety of handwork stitching adventuressuch as counted cross stitch, embroidery, knittingand even a tiny bit of mending.

Special note to new guild members: if you arewanting to join a club, Friendship Quilters meet atthe Sheboygan Falls Community Bank, on the firstMonday of each month at 1:00 in the afternoon, except on bank holidays and a Christmas lunch inDecember. The meeting room is accessible and hasgreat lighting. Enthusiastic new members are wel-come!

The Kiel Quilters headed back to YDS onApril 26th. No, we are not addicted! Three ofour members have never been there. Of course,we honored a few other shops too.

On May 6th, we are going to work at Linda’scamo quilt factory. Jan W. was doing sew, sew,sew during all that crummy weather. Soon shewill be doing weed, weed, weed. Most of us willbe out there too. I am looking forward to beingoutside, not necessarily weeding.

The fourth annual Loose Threads Quilt Campwas held March 15 - 18 in Door County withStumpy McFearsome (Patty Fallon) missing inaction. Stumpy is very busy working on herdaughter’s upcoming wedding. Wouldn’t youthink her daughter could elope or something. After all, quilting is very important when peoples’livelihood depends on it. We did our part helpingout by stopping at quilt shops along the waybefore stopping for lunch.

We needed to shop. After all, we didn’t want torun out of projects and the shop in Door County isout of business.

Stumpy McFeverish (Sandy Paskiet) found allthese wonderful Irish names for us on the Internet.

We brought along the challenge blocks andthanks to Greenie O’Shivers (Jan Tjaden) andGreenie O’Blaze (Kathleen Athorp), we are a fewsteps closer to being finished. Greenie McSmelly(Karen Mais) finished several small projects andMcFeverish is probably still making turtles for aquilt. She insists she did not give her sister thatname on purpose!

Warty McSpud (Jackie Williams) sat on thefloor playing with her quilt blocks while SprinklesMcMuffin (Bonnie Doyle) had some kits fromway back when. Greenie McTavern (JeanBeinemann) kept mumbling to her quilt blockslike, “Will I have enough fabric for new blocks?”

Warty McDoodles (Joyce Herman-Ross)finished a quilt top. Tater O’Rainbow (CarolCarrivieau) came late on Saturday after a funeral.I worked on a quilt kit from 2009.

Snow was predicted Monday so we left earlybut you know what they say about mailmen? Thesame can be said for a few quilters that I knowbecause it didn’t stop them from shopping on theway home!

We are helping our sisters move to their newsouth side location near Park and Save, so stop innext time you’re in the neighborhood!

February 2013 Retreat

Twenty-one quilters enjoyed their time at CedarValley Retreat last February. The weather workedwith us, for the most part, and only snowed and icedup when we were comfortably sewing away! Whata perfect time to quilt!

Attendees worked on UFO (Unfinished Objects)and WIP ( Works in Process). Many attendees com-pleted their at-risk baby quilts with bindings andquilting done!

Three new participants joined us, and they areLisa Bunke, Diane Bannow and Kim Johnson. Wealways learn so much from everyone, and it is greatto see the projects ln which new people are working!

The next retreat will be in October 11-13, 2013with an optional early start day of October 10th.Consider joining us to finish up some of yourprojects.
