INTRODU TION

The Mechanical properties and availability of woodhave made it a natural material for building structures, furniture, tools, vehicles, and decorative objects.Worldwide it is used more than metal or plastic.

Wood is a natural product and when used responsibly isa sustainable resource which need not result in damageto the environment. Forests can be protected by recyclingand reusing the wood, using less wood and bysupporting sustainable forest management

All wood is composed of cellulose,lignin, hemicelluloses,and minor amounts (5% to 10%) of extraneous materialscontained in a cellular structure.

Wood comprises about 50% of cellulose whichresponsible for most of its mechanical properties.

The sill plate is a wood member, typically made from treatedwood, attached to the top surface of the foundation. Joists arefastened to the sill plate.Rim joists are a series of similar sized wood members which areplaced around the outside of the floor structure. They are laid on
