My Work / Shaymus

The beginning of my current artistic direction within my practice and current visual language came to light after

establishing the creative name shaymus and began participating in professional practice within my

illustration work.

In my work I reflect on my own fascination and wonder with the natural world and universe by observation and

thinking with empathy. My work also explores and experiments with subjects I find personally interesting such as science, pop culture, philosophy and history.

Show statement"Science is the poetry of reality." - Richard Dawkins

My work reflects on a fascination with questions of existence and the human drive to understand the mechanics of nature. I believe the illustrator is in a unique position to reveal the beauty and wonder of the scientific realm, and that a metaphorical approach can help the reader to understand complex subject matter and meanings behind a text.

I explore and and experiment across a range of subjects including science, pop culture, philosophy and history, gathering inspiration from the natural world and looking at the work of thought-provoking artists such as Miho Hirano, Miles Johnston and Kelogsloops. Text and image work together to create images that communicate and summarise. Working traditionally and digitally, I use soft uniform pastel tones and watercolour, embellishing the information within the work to provide an exciting aesthetic for the participant-viewer to engage with.

Artist statementAs a creative and motivated individual, my aim is to generate a unique aesthetic experience that I enjoy but can’t find already existing elsewhere. Developing my practice by experimenting and enquiring within my illustration degree has given me a drive for research and understanding. Using my personal interest of mainly the sciences and philosophy, my Illustration degree has developed my practice in a way that enables me to communicate visually and work successfully within a brief. I aim for audiences to connect with quiet and detailed illustrations which are impactful and commutative. Not to be put in one creative box, I enjoy the creative challenge using soft, dynamic pastel and watercolour tones to visually communicate, aiming to see how I can best share my unique take on text and image. Through my time at university, my level of illustrative ability and understanding of context has increased and continues to do so, making it more effortless and less daunting when challenged with briefs. Working for commissions as a freelance artist at home alongside my degree and within live projects has enabled me to gain a skill in working efficiently to meet deadlines. Further, working for editorials and illustrating personally enjoyable podcasts has given me a sense of how I can use my illustration practice in the commercial world.
