Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas (Chicago, IL: Goodspeed,

1890)

Cross County, pp. 339-340 (Biography of Raphael Block [#961/2]) {13266}:

“Raphael Block is a leading merchant of Vanndale, was born in the town of Tremblade, Alsace,

France, in May, 1852, and was the fourth in a family of five children, born to Herman and

Rebecca Block, the father a successful business man of the old country. Raphael remained at

home attending schools, until thirteen years of age, and in 1871 determined to seek his for-

tune in America, and came to Wittsburg, Cross County, Ark., and engaged as a clerk for D.

Block & Co., but about two years later, became an employe of G. M. Arnold & Co., general

merchants of the same place. In 1874 he engaged in general merchandising at Wittsburg, be-

ing associated with B. Block, and they immediately began doing an extensive trade, the larg-

est in all probability that has ever been done by any one firm in Cross County. This partner-

ship was dissolved in 1886, and our subject became sole proprietor, and in 1887 he bought

the interest of J. W. Killough, of that well-known mercantile firm of Killough & Erwin, of

Vanndale, and since January 1, 1889, has been sole proprietor of this establishment also. He

has a large and well-selected stock of general merchandise, amounting to about $10,000, and

he commands a large and constantly improving trade. He is quite extensively engaged in buy-

ing and shipping cotton, and is an enterprising and wonderfully successful young business

man, and is courteous, pleasant and cheerful, a leading spirit in the commercial affairs of the

county. He is quite an active politician, and is always found at the polls on election day. So-

cially he belongs to Arcadia Lodge No. 183, of the A. F. & A. M., at Vanndale, and he also

belongs to the K. of H. and the K. & L. of H. December 28, 1874, he was married to Mrs.

Hester C. (Hamilton) Perry, a daughter of J. G. Hamilton, a member of the firm of D. Block

& Co. They have had five children: Herman (attending school at the Christian Brothers' Col-

lege of Memphis), Felix, Nina, David and Mary (who died in infancy).”

Cross County, p. 346 (Biography of William H. Copland) {13259}:

“William H. Copland, a prominent and energetic farmer of Searcy Township, was born in Ten-

nessee in 1827, and was the younger of two children, the result of the union of Thomas and

Elizabeth (Huey) Copland, respectively of North Carolina and South Carolina origin. The fa-

ther was a farmer by occupation principally, but for a long time found employment in over-

seeing and railroad contracting. In 1840 he was under contract to build three miles on the

Georgia Railroad, and after that he followed agricultural pursuits in the last-named State, but

before he had gathered the crops, sold out and in 1843 came to Arkansas. He remained in this

State but a few months when he went to Memphis and there resided for one year. From there

he went to Georgia, thence to Mississippi, but not finding a location to suit him he returned to

Tennessee, where he bought land and remained until 1849. He then went to Memphis, and

later spent a number of months in various parts of Arkansas, [p.346] settling eventually in

Poinsett County, where he died in 1872 at the age of seventy-three years. William H. Copland

remained with his father until 1846, when he came to Arkansas and located in what is now

Cross County, where he farmed for a number of years on rented land. In May, 1859, he mar-

ried Mrs. Hester Stanley (nee Hamilton), a daughter of Theopolis and Mary Hamilton, natives

of Georgia and South Carolina, respectively. Mrs. Hamilton was born in a fort which the men

protected from the Indians. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton came to Cross County, Ark., in 1836, and

settled on what is now known as the Bay Road. They were obliged to go a long way to mill

and endured many hardships. Mr. Hamilton bought 160 acres of land in 1837, cleared about

forty acres, erected buildings and made quite a pleasant home. He did much to improve the

country, and took a great interest in politics, and in fact all that pertained to the good of the

country. He died in 1849. His daughter Hester, the wife of the subject of this sketch, was

married first in 1837 to Mr. George Shaver [#84], also a descendant of one of the old pioneer

families. He died in 1846 leaving his wife with three children: Obediah, Charles and Mary,

all deceased and the sons dying in the army. In 1852 Mrs. Shaver married Mr. S. Stanley,

who died in 1859 leaving her with two children, Nancy and Leander, both of whom died in

childhood, and the father and children dying within two weeks of each other. At the time of

his marriage Mr. Copland had about 100 acres under cultivation, and now has another 100

acres also under cultivation. He has made many improvements, and in 1863 planted an orc-

hard which is still the best in the county. His fine residence was erected in 1855. In 1870 Mr.

Copland erected a horse-gin, which he ran for ten years, when it was replaced with a steam-

gin. This he sold in 1886. He is the owner of 440 acres of land, 200 of which are under culti-

vation. In 1863 he enlisted in the Confederate army, was in all the battles of Gen. Price's raid

through Missouri and never received a wound. In November, 1864, he returned home, sur-

rendering at Wittsburg in the spring of 1865. Mrs. Copland is a member of the Baptist

Church, and Mr. Copland is a member of the K. of H. In 1876 he fell from a horse and hurt

his leg, rendering amputation necessary, the following year. To the marriage of Mr. and Mrs.

Copland has been born one child, a son, Willie, whose birth occurred in 1861. He is living at

home, and has control and management of the farm. Mr. and Mrs. Copland are among the in-

telligent and much respected citizens of Cross County and are universally respected.”

Cross County, pp. 353-354 (Biography of John J. Hamilton [#96/1]) {13260}:

“John J. Hamilton (deceased) is a son of Theophilus Hamilton, one of the pioneers of this sec-

tion, and who came to Arkansas in his childhood. The family came to Middle Tennessee, set-

tled on what is now called the Bay Road in Cross County, and here John J. Hamilton spent

his youth in farming pursuits, and had but limited educational advantages. When twenty-one

years of age he left home and commenced working for himself as an overseer on the planta-

tion of Col. Cross, with whom he remained two years. On April 17, 1848, he married Miss

Parmesia Shaver, a daughter of Charles Shaver, who was among the very first of the pioneers

of what is now Cross County. Mr. Shaver came to this State, perhaps as early as 1815, settled

on Sugar Creek where he cleared up a good farm, and erected the first mill in this section.

Soon after his arrival the Indians stole nearly all his stock. He lived on the original place, now

known as Bay Village, until his death. After the conclusion of his contract with Col. Cross,

Mr. Hamilton purchased a small tract of land on Otter Creek, in the northern part of Cross

County, where he and his young wife moved, and began clearing up a place for a home. They

remained there three years, and during that time Mr. Hamilton cleared about thirty acres.

They then moved to a tract of 480 acres, and later bought near the first settlement. Here they

remained for about ten years, during which time Mr. Hamilton cleared [p.354] about 100

acres. In 1866 the commercial firm of D. Block & Co., of Wittsburg was formed, consisting

of David and Maurice Block, and the subject of this sketch. This firm soon began to do an as-

tonishing business for this section, their business yielding annually from $100,000 to

$300,000. The partners in this business died, Mr. Maurice Block first and John J. Hamilton

May 3, 1878. The latter, a few years previous to his death, withdrew from the firm, and re-

moved to the old home at Bay Village. Here he built a cotton-gin, opened a general store and

drug store, and thus was practically the first business enterprise started in the place. He lived

but one year after moving back. His success in business enabled him to leave a fortune to his

heirs and widow, consisting mostly of real estate in Cross County. He was very public spi-

rited, and very active politically. He was self-made, carved his way to fortune, and mainly

educated himself after marriage. The result of his union with Miss Shaver resulted in the birth

of ten children: Hester C. (wife of R. Block), William Boone (died at the age of twenty-four

years), Obediah A., Charles M. (merchant at Wynne), David H. (died at the age of twenty-

seven years), J. B. (at present sheriff of Cross County), A. P. (died at the age of six years),

Forest (merchant at Wynne), Effie (wife of Willis Levesque, of Cross County) and Edward

(clerk at railroad office).”

Cross County, p. 354 (Biography of C. M. Hamilton [#964]) {13261}:

“C. M. Hamilton, merchant, Wynne, Ark. This prominent business man, of the firm of Johnson

& Hamilton, first saw the light of day near Wittsburg in 1855, and was the fourth of nine

children born to the union of J. H. and P. (Shaver) Hamilton. [See sketch of J. J. Hamilton.]

C. M. Hamilton was taught the duties of farm life when young, attended the common schools

until twenty years of age, when he engaged in the drug business at Wittsburg in partnership

with R. M. Smith, and continued at this for eight years. Also during this time he had an inter-

est in a similar store at Forrest City. In 1879 he opened a general store, and for several years

conducted the two establishments. In 1885 he sold the drug store, and turned his attention to

the general store, which business is conducted under the firm name of Hamilton, Smith & Co.

He was very successful, and during the year 1887, he shipped about 700 bales of cotton. This

firm dissolved partnership in the same year, and in July, 1888, Mr. Hamilton formed a part-

nership with W. M. Johnson, and opened an extensive general store at Wynne. They carry a

stock valued at $6,000, buy everything a farmer has to sell, and have everything he wishes to

buy. Mr. Hamilton has been married twice, first in 1878, to Miss Spraggins, a native of Ar-

kansas, and daughter of D. Spraggins, who was a pioneer of this section, a merchant at

Wittsburg for a number of years, and also an extensive farmer. She died in January, 1887, and

left two children: Charley and Floy. His second marriage occurred in October, 1888, and the

same year he built a neat cottage in Wynne, where he now has a pleasant home. Aside from

this he has two other residences which he rents, and also a residence in Forrest City. He is

somewhat active in politics, and votes with the Democratic party. Socially he is a K. of P.,

Lodge No. 52, and a K. of H., and belongs to the K. & L. of H. He is a good and an enterpris-

ing citizen.”

Cross County, pp. 354-355 (Biography of J. B. Hamilton [#966]) {13262}:

“J. B. Hamilton, sheriff, Cross County, Ark. Were one to ask the leading characteristics of Mr.

Hamilton as a man, the answer would come almost involuntary that he is brave and fearless,

honest, but unpretending, and a man who has been tried, but not found wanting, and one ca-

pable of discharging his official and private duties with competency. J. B. Hamilton was born

in Cross County, Ark., in 1862, and is the son of John and Parmesia (Shaver) Hamilton. [For

further particulars see sketch of father.] He passed his boyhood days in assisting on the farm

and in attending the common schools, finishing his education by a course in the Commercial

College at Memphis, Tenn. In 1880 he went to Poinsett County, where he was in business in

Harrisburg for two years. In 1885 he started a livery stable at Wittsburg, but in 1886 moved

his business to Wynne, and continued to follow this occupation in that city until in June,

1889, when he sold out. Mr. Hamilton has always taken a deep interest in politics, served as

deputy sheriff for two years under Sheriff J. W. Killough, and in 1888 was elected [p.355]

sheriff and collector of Cross County. At the time of his election he was just twenty-seven

years of age, and is the youngest sheriff ever elected to that office in Arkansas. Mr. Hamiliton

was married December 19, 1888, to Miss Rena Cogbill, a native of Cross County, and the

daughter of W. H. Cogbill, who has been a citizen of Cross County for some time. Mr. Ham-

ilton is a member of the K. of P., and is one of the brightest young men of the county. He is

pleasant and courteous, and his abilities have been recognized by the people as may be seen

from the office to which they have elected him. To his marriage has been born one child, a

daughter, Margery.”

Cross County, p. 355 (Biography of B. F. Hamilton [#967]) {13263}:

“B. F. Hamilton, Wynne, Ark. Prominent among the very successful business men of Wynne,

stands the name of B. F. Hamilton, who is gentlemanly and courteous in all his relations with

the public, and whose popularity is established. He was born in Cross County, Ark., in 1866,

and is the eighth of ten children born to John G. and Parmesia (Shaver) Hamilton, old settlers

of this county. The father died in 1879, but the mother is still living. B. F. Hamilton passed

his boyhood days in assisting on the farm and in attending the common schools until eighteen

years of age, when he engaged as drug clerk for Hamilton & Norton, at Wittsburg. After re-

maining in that capacity for a year and a half, he changed to a position in the same business

for M. C. Collins at the same place. One year later, in partnership with T. A. Bedford, he be-

gan business for himself at Wittsburg, continuing there for two years, when Mr. Bedford

withdrew, and the same business was continued with the present partner. In 1887 they re-

moved to Wynne, and started a store in the same business. In February of 1889, they sold out,

and under the same firm name are continuing in business at Wynne. Mr. Hamilton, though

still a young man, is at present treasurer of the city of Wynne; is quite active politically, and

always takes a deep interest in all things that tend to the upbuilding of the county or town. He

is one of the successful and well-known citizens of the town, and comes of an old and hon-

ored family.”

Cross County, pp. 367-368 (Biography of W. T. Levesque [#969/1]) {13264}:

“W. T. Levesque, one of the prominent young farmers of Cold Water Township, is a worthy son

of J. M. and Nannie (Willis) Levesque [a sketch of whose lives immediately precedes this].

Born in Cross County in 1860, he was reared on a farm, and at the age of seventeen was ap-

pointed deputy sheriff of the county, his father being sheriff at that time, serving under him

for four years; he was also called upon to act in a similar capacity the next two years under

Sheriff Legg. At the age of twenty-three Mr. Levesque commenced farming on his father's

land, in which occupation he is still interested, also operating a saw-mill and cottongin. He

was married in 1884 to Miss Effie Hamilton, of this county, a daughter of J. G. and Permesia

(Shaver) Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton are the parents of ten children (seven living in

this county): Hester C. (wife of R. Block), W. B., O. A., D. H., C. M., J. B., P., B. F., Effie

and Edward. Mr. Levesque is a member of the K. of H., and of the K. & L. of H. He is enjoy-

ing a large business in his mill and gin and is justly recognized as among the county's leading

young men.”

Cross County, p. 378 (Biography of Judge W. F. Robinson [#843/1 ?]) {13265}:

“Judge W. F. Robinson, an esteemed member of the bench, was reared on a farm in North Caro-

lina and at the age of nineteen, commenced farming for himself, but four years later he en-

tered the Peabody School of Pigeon Gap, N. C., but remained in this institution for a short

time only, when in the fall of 1873 he came to Arkansas, locating in Cross County and rent-

ing a farm in Searcy Township until 1888, when he purchased his present farm, which con-

sists of eighty acres of timbered land. The Judge was born in Haywood County, N. C., on

November 22, 1849, and was a son of John P. and Jane M. (Clark) Robinson, of North Caro-

lina nativity. Mr. John P. Robinson (the father) was a farmer by occupation. Hearing his

country call for volunteers during the Civil War, he enlisted in the Sixteenth North Carolina

Infantry. He is still a resident of Haywood County. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were blessed with

ten children, five of whom are still living: W. F. (our subject), I. M., Dovie L. (wife of James

Rinehart), John B. and Lorah J. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson are members of the Methodist Epi-

scopal Church. He is a worthy member of the A. F. & A. M. Judge Robinson has been twice

married. First to Miss Mary E. Shaver, on August 5, 1880, and who died the following

March. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was married the second

time on March 28, 1889, to Miss Mary Baker, of this county. In 1876 the Judge was elected

justice of the peace of Searcy Township, which office he held eight years, resigning it to ac-

cept that of county and probate judge, to which he had been elected, and is now serving his

second term, with satisfaction to the people who honored him with their votes and confi-

dence, and with great credit to himself.”

Counties, Arkansas (Chicago, IL: Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889)

Franklin County biographies

pp. 1251-1252: {1178}

“William M. Kizer [#B8/1], one of the leading citizens of White Oak Township, was born in

Morgan County, Mo., April 18, 1837, and is a son of Valentine and Frances (Davis) Kizer,

natives of Bedford County, Tenn., and North Carolina, respectively. They were married in the

father’s native county, and about 1831 came to Missouri, locating in Salem County, where

they resided for a while, and afterwards removed to Osage County, where they died. They

were farmers and both died at the age of about forty-two years, leaving a family of five small

children in destitute circumstances: Nancy H., Susan, William, John D. and Frances. All are

living but Frances. They were reared by an uncle, who brought them from Missouri to Frank-

lin County, Ark., in 1854. William began working as a farm laborer after coming to Arkan-

sas, and continued this occupation for four years, when he entered a tract of land, and began

farming on his own responsibility. At the end of two years he gave up farming to aid the

Southern cause, enlisting in July, 1862, in Company I, Thirty-fourth Arkansas Infantry. At the

close of the war his company was disbanded at Marshall, Tex., and he resided in that State,

whither his family had previously moved, until November, 1865, when he returned to Frank-

lin County, Ark., and here has since made his home. He was without a penny that he could

call his own at the close of the war, but by industry and economy he was soon able to pur-

chase a tract of land, consisting of forty acres, which he has from time to time increased, until

he now owns 240 acres of valuable and well-cultivated land. His success in life is due to his

indomitable energy, perseverance, and good management, and to his cheerful, practical and

intelligent wife. On the 26th

of January, 1859, he was married to Miss Thurzy M. Shaver, a

daughter of Jacob B. Shaver. She was born in Washington County, Ark., March 13, 1836,

and her union with Mr. Kizer resulted in the birth of nine children, six of whom are living:

Madora J., wife of W. A. Lloyd; Laura Lorena, wife of T. F. Anderson; John A., Taylor E.,

Clark M. and Martha M. Those deceased are Jacob V., Sarepta L. and Flora Ann. Mr. and

Mrs. Kizer, and all but their youngest child, are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian

Church, and he is a Democrat in his political views. Mrs. Kizer’s father was a native of North

Carolina, but removed to Tennessee and an early day, from which State he came to Washing-

ton County, Ark. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, being at the battle of New Orleans,

and died in 1883 at the extreme old age of ninety-six.”

In memory of our dear mother, Mrs. Theresa Malinda Kizer, who departed this life March 3,

1919, at her son’s Mr. Taylor Kizer. She had been a sufferer for about 15 years, but gradually

grew worse until at last her spirit took its flight to the great beyond where there is no sorrow,

pain nor death. Oh, how she did suffer, no one can tell. I was at her bedside a great deal and

all was done that loving hands could do, but all in vain. She knew every thing until about one

hour before she died; if she had lived until the 13th

day of March she would have been 83

years old. She leaves one brother and one sister; six children and a host of grandchildren and

friends. Four of her children were present during her sickness and death. Mrs. M. J. Loyd of

Jenks, Okla. and Mrs. Laura Anderson, of Floydada, Texas, came, but too late. She formerly

made her home at her son’s, John Kizer, but on the 8th

of January she was taken to Taylor

Kizer’s to stay awhile. She visited around among her children.

Funeral service was conducted by Brother Jim McClellan, at the Bourland graveyard, where a

large number was gathered to pay the last respect; after that she was laid to rest beside her

husband, who departed this life 24 years ago. To know her was to love her. Loving words and

advice she would give her children and grandchildren.

Weep not, children, mother can’t come back to you, but you can meet her where there is on more

good-byes.

She was born in Washington, Ark.; moved to Franklin county when about 13 years of age. Her

mother died when she was a small girl and she stayed with her father until she was about 22

years old.

. . . – Written by one who loved her.”

Independence County, p. 723 (Biography of R. D. Williams [#258/1]) {19041}

“R. D. Williams. The merchants of Batesville have the reputation of being among the most en-

terprising in Arkansas, and Mr. Williams stands in the foremost ranks of commercial life at

that point. He was born in Henry County, Tenn., on October 28, 1836, and is a son of Wil-

liam R. and Evaline (Moody) Williams, of Kentucky and Tennessee, respectively. The par-

ents were married in the latter State and moved to Arkansas about the year 1839, locating in

Independence County. They remained here two years and then removed to Lawrence County,

now Sharp County, and located near the county seat, Evening Shade. They were among the

early settlers of that section, where the father's occupation was farming, and where they re-

sided until the time of their death. They were the parents of eight children, of whom three on-

ly are living at present: Richard D., Cordelia, wife of M. G. Wainright, and Nancy J., wife of

W. T. Cunningham. Richard was only three years old when he came to Lawrence County

with his parents, and was educated in the common schools of that place. Some idea of the

schools of that period may be obtained from the one he attended, which was merely a log ca-

bin, and had nothing but the bare earth to serve as a floor. He remained on the farm until he

reached maturity, and then occupied a responsible position with a business house at Evening

Shade, in which he was employed for two years. In 1858 he became a merchant himself, and

carried on a profitable business until the war commenced, when he left it in charge of a friend

and enlisted in Company D, Fourteenth Arkansas Regiment. He was taken violently ill short-

ly after joining the army and returned home, but after recovering he again enlisted, becoming

a member of Wade's Company, and served a short time in Price's raids through Missouri. He

was captured near his home soon after this raid, but after two weeks' confinement was pa-

roled, and after the surrender returned home and took charge of his business at Evening

Shade, continuing there until the fall of 1887, when he moved to Batesville and opened up a

large and well-stocked store. He still retains his interest in the business at Evening Shade,

however, the firm there being Williams, Price & Co., while that one at Batesville is known as

R. D. Williams & Co. He owns about 1,200 acres of land in Sharp County, and has about 500

acres under cultivation. Mr. Williams is a true representative of the wide-awake, active and

enterprising business man, and his ability has made him one of the most successful men in

commercial circles in Batesville. He was married in 1867 to Miss Mary E. Shaver, by whom

he has one child living–Clara. He lost this wife, and was again married in 1882, his second

wife being Mrs. Mattie Wasson, widow of W. G. Wasson. Mr. Williams is a member of the

Masonic fraternity and the Knights of Honor, and, with his wife, attends the Methodist Epi-

scopal Church.”

Poinsett County, p. 572

“Bay Village, a little town ten miles southeast of Harrishurg, lies in both Poinsett and Cross

Counties, with the postoffice in the latter. Its site was settled by Charles Shaver [#9], in 1826,

but the village was not established until 1874, when Eli Rooks opened the first store. The

second store began an existence under the management of J. G. Hamilton [#96/1], and the

postoffice was located there in 1876. The town was named by Col. Wheaton on account of its

nearness to the bay. It now contains seventeen families, two general stores, a blacksmith and

wood-work shop, a cotton-gin and grist mill and a Methodist Episcopal Church edifice, the

church organization having been established over fifty years ago; this has now a membership

of 180, with Rev. J. I. Maynard, pastor. ”

Poinsett County, pp. 606-607 (Biography of A. C. Shaver [#911]) {18967}

“A. C. Shaver, justice of the peace, postmaster and farmer, Bay Village, Ark. Born in Poinsett

County (now Cross County) on the eighth of October, 1844, Mr. Shaver has ever since re-

sided here, and is accounted one of the representative men of the county. He is the son of W.

A. and Matilda (Stone) Shaver. natives, respectively, of Missouri and Tennessee. The parents

were early settlers of this section, coming here about 1826, and the father held the office of

justice of the peace for a number of years. He was Democratic in his political principles, and

he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. They reared to maturity

seven children: A. C.; C. R., a farmer living in Cross County, Ark.; Fanny died in 1880, and

was the wife of J. B. Henshaw, a mechanic; Josephine died in 1883, and was the wife of Hen-

ry McAden, a farmer of Poinsett County; Jerline, wife of James Copeland, a farmer of Cross

County, Ark.; T. J. engaged in general mechanics in Bay Village, and Rebecca, wife of Rev.

J. I. Maynord. The father of these children died on the 19th of April, 1875, and the mother in

September, 1869. A. C. Shaver. like most of the youths of the vicinity, passed his boyhood

days in assisting on the farm and in attending the common schools, although he received the

principal part of his education by his own individual efforts, and in 1862 enlisted in Col.

McGee's regiment, Arkansas Cavalry. He was wounded at Helena on the 4th of July, 1864,

and was never able to enter service after that. He left with the rank of orderly sergeant. At the

age of twenty-five he started out for himself by marrying, in 1869, a Miss Georgia Brooks,

and by her became the father of five interesting children: Willie W., Sallie A., M. G., Myrtie,

and Olive W., all living. Since his marriage Mr. Shaver has followed agricultural pursuits,

cotton-ginning, merchandising, etc., and in all has been successful. He has three times been

elected to the office of justice of the peace, twice in Cross County and once in Poinsett Coun-

ty, and is now holding that position and discharging the duties of the same in a very able and

efficient manner. He was appointed postmaster in 1883, and is still holding that position. He

is the owner of 175 acres of land, 120 in Poinsett County and fifty-five acres in Cross Coun-

ty, with fifty acres under cultivation. He lives on the old homestead, just over the line in

Cross County, and is one of the stirring, industrious farmers of the County. He and his wife

and two oldest children are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, to which he contri-

butes liberally, as he does to all public enterprises. In politics he votes with the Democratic

party. ”

Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast Arkansas (Chicago, IL: Goods-

peed, 1889)

Randolph County, p. 383 (Biography of R. J. Carter [#412]) {18761}

“R. J. Carter, cotton grower and stock raiser, Pocahontas. Ark. Mr. Carter is one of those widea-

wake, thorough-going gentlemen who are bound to make their way in the world with very lit-

tle help from outsiders. He is the son of Minatree and Matilda (Mock) Carter, the former a

native of South Carolina, and one of the early pioneers of Northeast Arkansas, where he died

in 1857, at the age of fifty-five or fifty-six years. The mother was also a native of South Caro-

lina, and died when about fifty-three years of age. She was partly of German descent. Of the

nine children born to their marriage, three are now living, and R. J. Carter was the fifth in or-

der of birth. He was born in Randolph County, Ark., in 1833, and grew to manhood in that

and Greene Counties. He made his start in life by following the occupation to which he had

been trained in early life, farming, and in 1861 was united in marriage to Miss Mary D. Kuy-

kendall. To this union were born three children, only one, Min., who is twenty-seven years of

age, now living. Those deceased are Florence and Norah. In 1862 Mr. Carter entered the Con-

federate service, and was on duty for three years. He was at the battles of Jenkins' Ferry, Plea-

sant Hill, Camden and Helena. He returned to his family at the close of the war and continued

tilling the soil in Greene County, Ark., for fifteen years. He then came to Randolph County,

settled on 500 acres and engaged in farming and stock raising. He is also the owner of 240

acres in Clay County. He is a Democrat in politics, a member of the Masonic fraternity, Mas-

ter Mason and a Knight of Honor. He is also a member of the Baptist Church. Min. Carter,

son of R. J. Carter, was born in Clay County, Ark., in 1862, was reared on the farm until six-

teen years of age, when he entered the State University at Fayetteville, Ark., where he at-

tended one year. He then entered Batesville College, where he graduated in 1884 with the de-

gree of B. S. Returning to Pocahontas, he engaged as a salesman in the store of R. N. Hamil

for two years. He then embarked in the drug business for himself, and this continued until

April, 1889. He was married in November, 1888, to Miss Mazie Esselman, a daughter of Dr.

Esselman, of Pocahontas. Both are members of the Roman Catholic Church.”

Randolph County, pp. 400-401 (Biography of J. W. Ingram [#425/1]) {18767}

“J. W. Ingram is a substantial farmer and miller of the county, and as such deserves honorable

mention in these pages. As he was born in this county. May 8, 1839, the people have had

every opportunity to judge of his character, and he has won the confidence and esteem of all.

He is a son of James P. and Rebecca (Mansker) Ingram, the former having been born in Vir-

ginia, February 6, 1800, and the latter in Tennessee, March 6, 1811. James P. Ingram was re-

moved by his father to Kentucky in 1805, and there remained until 1824, when he removed to

Randolph County, Ark., and settled on what is now known as the Old Ingram Farm, on the

old military road, six miles southwest of Pitman's Ferry. Here he lived from 1834 until he

died, August 12, 1874, at the age of seventy four years. His widow resided on this farm for

fifty-three years, and died on the 27th of June, 1888, at the age of seventy-seven years, three

months and twenty-one days. She came with her parents to this State in 1817, and lacked only

a short time of having lived here seventy years. Mr. Ingram was an industrious agriculturist,

and accumulated property to the amount of 1,000 acres of land. He served as constable eight

years, justice of the peace six years, and county judge four years. He was married on the 12th

of April, 1825, his wife being only a little over fourteen years of age at that time. Their family

consisted of eleven children, the following being those who are now living: G. H., a farmer of

this county; Leddie B., wife of H. H. Hatley, and J. W. Those deceased are Lurana, wife of

W. P. G. Johnston, and Hannah ****., who died at the age of twenty years; the rest died in

childhood or infancy. J. W. Ingram commenced life for himself at the age of eighteen years,

and was married then to Miss Rebecca M. Mansker, their union taking place on the 12th of

April, and to them the following children have been born: M. E., wife of W. C. Smith, of this

county; Martha R., wife of William Jolly, of this county; W. G. [p.401] C.; Sarah L., wife of

Robert G. Johnson, being those living; and L. V. J., the deceased wife of Benjamin Phipps,

and Mary L., who is also deceased, having been the wife of F. M. Ezell. Mrs. Ingram was

born October 18, 1839, and is now no more, having passed to her long home April 25, 1870.

Our subject's second union took place October 9, 1870, his wife's maiden name being Josie

C. Mock, of this county. Five of their children died when small, and three are now living: R.

G. C., who was born September 2, 1883: T. F., born May 17, 1875, and J. R., born March 22,

1877. The mother of these children died on the 28th of December, 1883, having been a con-

sistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. South, and her husband espoused his

third wife, Mrs. Mary P. (Kerley) Tilley, on the 10th of April, 1884. Laura Dean, who was

born on the 16th of April, 1885, being the only one of their three children who is now living.

Mrs. Ingram's first union took place on the 2d of July, 1871, and she bore her husband three

children: Sarah L., born December 10, 1872, and Thomas J., born August 3, 1877, being the

only ones living. Mr. Tilley was born in Tennessee, and died on the 12th of February. 1882,

having been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. While serving in the Confederate

army he lost all the fingers of one of his hands, and was discharged from the service. Mr. In-

gram, the subject of this sketch, also served in the Confederate army, joining Company I.

Shaver's regiment, on the 8th of August, 1863. He surrendered at Jacksonport. Ark., June 5,

1865, having been with Price on his raid in Missouri. During this time he lost all his property

except his land; but this he returned to, and began to improve, erecting in 1869 a cotton-gin,

which he continued to operate until 1878, when it was burned to the ground. The loss is esti-

mated at $3,500. On the 17th of January, 1873, he was taken ill with erysipelas, and by the

21st of that month he had lost his eye sight. He has had ten children he has never seen. He is

a wealthy farmer, owning 1,460 acres of land, with some 248 acres under improvement. He

has a steam cotton-gin, seventy head of cattle, twelve head of horses and mules, and numer-

ous other domestic animals. Although blind, this does not deter him from work, and he can

readily bind wheat and oats, feed a threshing machine or steam cotton-gin. He is a member of

the A. F. & A. M., and is a Democrat. He and his wife are church members, he belonging to

the Methodist and his wife to the Baptist Church.”

Randolph County, pp. 416-418 (Biography of Perry Nettle [#451/1]) {18797}

“Hon Perry Nettle enjoys the reputation of being not only a substantial and progressive farmer,

but an intelligent and thoroughly posted [p.417] man in all public affairs. He has always been

noted for honorable, upright dealing, and has kept the name he bears pure in the sight of all.

He is a native of the county, his birth occurring on the 30th of September, 1839, and is a son

of Shadrach and Elizabeth (Graham) Nettle, who were born in the States of North Carolina

and Tennessee, respectively. They moved to Arkansas in 1824, and settled in what was then

Lawrence (now Randolph) County, and after the State line between Arkansas and Missouri

was surveyed their house was found to be in Oregon County, Mo., and thus it has stood in

three different counties and two States without being moved. Mr. Nettle lived here until

1858, and after a short residence in Clay County, Ark., he returned to Oregon County, Mo.,

where he made his home from 1863 to 1885, and on the 5th of November, 1887, his death

occurred in Lawrence County, Ark. He was one of the pioneers of the county, and always fol-

lowed the occupation of farming, and in connection with hunting, in early days, succeeded in

making a good living and laying up a competency for his old age. He had passed the allotted

age of man at the time of his death, and was eighty-four years, seven months, and twenty-four

days old. He lived on the line between Arkansas and Missouri for sixty-two years. His mar-

riage with Miss Graham occurred in 1823, and to them was born a family of eight children:

William O., born January 1, 1824, and died February 7, 1875; Levi, born May 25, 1827, and

died September 6, 1856; Elijah was born November 4, 1831, and now lives in California;

Francis M. was born on the 10th of September, 1834, and resides in Oregon County, Mo., on

the farm on which he was born; Carter T., born October 23, 1837, died February 11, 1875;

Perry; Sarah, born May 11, 1842, is the wife of James Johnson, and Elizabeth, born Novem-

ber 15, 1844, and died October 4, 1861. The mother of these children was born on the 10th of

September, 1803, and died on the 3d of April, 1857, she having been an earnest member of

the Baptist Church. Perry Nettle's early scholastic advantages were of the most meager de-

scription, but in later years he applied himself closely to his books, and is now one of the

most intelligent men of the county. In 1862 he joined the Confederate army, being in Capt. J.

J. Wyatt's company, Shaver's regiment, and was an active participant until the close of the

war, when he surrendered at Shreveport, La. He was captured at the fall of Little Rock, on the

10th day of September, 1863, he at that time being under treatment in the hospital, and was

kept in captivity for nearly a year and a half in St. Louis, Alton, Rock Island and New Or-

leans; he was then brought back to the mouth of the Big Red River, and was there exchanged

on the 25th of February, 1865. He then rejoined his command at Shreveport, and served his

cause faithfully until the final surrender, holding the rank of first sergeant of his company.

Since that time he has been engaged in farming, and now has a fine farm of 200 acres, but

from 1874 to 1880 he was also engaged in merchandising at Warm Spring, and at the same

time dealt in stock. In 1884 he was elected to represent the people of his county in the State

legislature, and filled the office during the session of 1885. He made the race again in 1886,

and was defeated by the Hon. G. G. Johnson, but was re-elected to the position in 1888, and

served the following year. He now attends to his farm. July 27, 1865, he was married to Miss

Mary S. Mock, of this county, by whom he has the following family: Jacob L., born January

11, 1867, and died July 19, 1886; Maggie E., born June 3, 1868, was married November 16,

1885, to James F. Baker, and lives in Oregon County, Mo.; Shadrach G., born February 17,

1872; Rufus L., born July 18, 1875; W. A., born March 2, 1879, and died September 10, of

the same year. Mr. Nettle is a Democrat, a public-spirited man, and a member of the A. F. &

A. M. Mrs. Nettle is the daughter of Griffith C. and Margaret J. (Forster) Mock, who were

born in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, respectively. They were married on the 11th of

March, 1838, and reared a family of eight children: Mary S. (Mrs. Nettle), born July 1, 1840;

Felix G., born June 3, 1843; Leah P., wife of Joseph W. Spikes, born January 7, 1846; Mar-

ous D. L., born April 4, 1848; Matilda J., wife of L. H. Waldron, born [p.418] March 27,

1851; Thomas D., born March 8, 1853; Rufus M., born February 15, 1856, and Isham J., born

January 22, 1859, and died October 19, 1877. Mr. Mock was born on the 29th of April, 1815,

and died September 20, 1874; his wife was born on the 16th of October, 1817, and died April

5, 1879. They were members of the Christian Church, and politically he was a Democrat.”

Randolph County, pp. 428-429 (Biography of James F. Shaver [#116]) {1239}

“James F. Shaver, who is one of the successful farmers of Warm Springs Township, was born in

Randolph County, Ark., in September, 1833, and is a son of John and Nancy (Cook) Shaver,

who were born in Georgia. They were married in Alabama, about 1823, and in 1828 came to

Arkansas, settling in this county, where they purchased and also entered some Government

land. Wild animals of all kinds roamed the woods at will at this time, and in some places the

forests were almost impenetrable, but it can be said of John Shaver that, with the courage and

perseverance which marked the lives of so many of our pioneers, He chopped, he logged, he

cleared his lot, And into many a dismal spot He let the light of day. His neighbors were from

ten to fifteen miles distant, and at that time wagons were a rare sight, but small trucks were

made by sawing large logs in two, the wheels being of solid wood –even these rude con-

veyances being few and far between. The nearest flouring-mill, which was twenty-five miles

away, could only be reached by crossing two rivers, and owing to the difficulty of doing this,

the settlers had to resort to the old-fashioned pestle. The first flouring-mill put up in this part

of the county was on the old Russell place, and was run by horse power. This was about the

year 1838. He and his wife were born in 1800 and 1798, and died in 1850 and 1858, respec-

tively. They were members of the Christian Church, and became the parents of eleven child-

ren, eight living to be grown: William, who resides in Webster County, Mo., is a minister in

the Christian Church; Robert, who died leaving a family in this county; Alexander, also de-

ceased, his family being residents of the county; Peter, Martha, widow of C.Johnson; Caro-

line, the deceased wife of John Johnson; Nancy, wife of Jesse Johnson, and John, who was

killed at the battle of Shiloh in 1862, while serving in the Confederate army. The other child-

ren died in infancy. James F. Shaver had very poor educational advantages in his youth, and

although he attended the old fashioned subscription schools long enough to learn to read, he

did not attend sufficiently long to learn to write. In 1852 he married Miss Elizabeth Waddle,

a native of the county, born in 1836, and to them were born the following family: Alexander,

born December 23, 1853; J. H., born August 2, 1855; Louis M., born December 22, 1857; Sa-

rah E., wife of Eli Morris, born January 2, 1859; Jacob S., born October 6, 1861; James F.,

Jr., born November 2, 1863; Matilda A., born January 14, 1866, wife of Jeff Morris; R. L.,

born April 4, 1868, Peter M., born December 20, 1869; William M., born August 27, 1871;

Permelia E., born January 14, 1874, and Joseph A., born February 28, 1876. In 1862 Mr.

Shaver joined the Confederate army; he was with Price on his last raid through Missouri in

1864, and was a participant in a number of battles and skirmishes, Pilot Knob and Blue Lick

being among the number. After his surrender, which occurred at Jacksonport, Ark., in June,

1865, he came home and engaged immediately in farming, entering at first 160 acres of land,

and now has eighty under cultivation. He is also engaged in raising horses and cattle of a

good grade. Mr. Shaver is a public-spirited citizen, is a Democrat in his political views, and

he and his wife are members of the Christian Church, as are nearly all their children. Mrs.

Shaver is a daughter of Henry and Sarah (Biggers) Waddle, Tennesseeans by birth, who came

to Arkansas about 1832, and here married the following year. Their children were Lucinda,

wife of Peter Shaver; Matilda (deceased), Sarah (Johnson), Susan (Roberts), Jefferson (de-

ceased), Jake, Caroline (Graves), Marietta L. (Hawk), George and James (twins), and Eliza-

beth, wife of our subject. The parents died in 1849 and 1862, aged fifty and sixty years, re-

spectively.”

Confederate Veteran, Vol. 23, pp. 178-179, Obituary of Robert G. Shaver

Col. Robert G. Shaver

By Col. V. Y. Cook, Batesville, Arkansas

"Colonel Robert G. Shaver died at the home of his daughter; Mrs. P.B. Williams, at Foreman,

Arkansas, on January 13, 1915, aged eighty-four years. He came to Arkansas with his parents

from Sullivan County; East Tennessee, in 1850, locating at Batesville, where in 1856 he was

John Ringgold, one of the State's most prominent citizens. Some three years later he removed

to Lawrence County, where he was licensed to practice law

In the spring of 1861 he recruited and organized the 7th Arkansas Infantry for the Confederate

army and was elected its first colonel. He and his regiment saw service at Columbus and

Bowling Green, Ky, and on the evacuation of the latter place by General Albert Sidney

Johnston in February; 1862, Colonel Shaver; as senior colonel of the brigade in which his re-

giment was serving, commanded the rear guard of General Johnston's army to Nashville,

Tenn., a most critical period.

At Shiloh, April 6 and 7, 1862, Colonel Shaver, still in command of the brigade - i.e., the 1st

Brigade of Hindman's Division, 3d Army Corps, composed of the 2d, 6th, and 7th Arkansas

Infantry and the 3d Confederate Infantry; two-thirds of the latter regiment also being Arkan-

sans - rose level to his country's need, and the soldiers who followed him were of the very

best type. Colonel Shaver initiated the fight on the Confederate right early Sunday morning,

the 6th, where the fighting was fierce and incessant throughout that bloody struggle, a strug-

gle in which brothers were standard bearers of the opposing forces, and where he led there

was much carnage; yet victory was his at every point, as his troops surged forward in con-

junction with his alignment of the Confederate center and left wing, pushing the Federals

back toward the Tennessee River; where late in the afternoon they appeared a conglomerated

mass of fugitives on the river bank seeking the friendly aegis of the Federal gunboats.

The 7th Arkansas, Colonel Shaver's own regiment, went into action on the left of the brigade,

Lieutenant Colonel Deane commanding, with its drum-and-fife corps playing Granny, Will

Your Dog Bite?

Colonel Shaver had two horses killed under him during the day and one on the following day,

when he and his brigade continued to fight gallantly and effectively. General Hardee, in his

report of the battle, said that Colonel Shaver's conduct was most satisfactory, skillful, and ex-

emplary throughout both days' fighting.

Early in June, 1862, Colonel Shaver; with General Hindman, was transferred to the Trans-

Mississippi Department; and at Jackonport, Ark., on the 8th of September of that year; Colo-

nel Shaver organized the 38th Arkansas Infantry, of which he was unanimously elected colo-

nel and which he continued to command during the various campaigns and battles in that de-

partment. In the fall of 1864, at the reorganization of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi, Co-

lonel Shaver was again elected colonel of the 38th, and on the same day, in a different field,

he was also elected colonel of Shaver's 27th Arkansas Infantry. Gen. Kirby Smith consolidat-

ed these two regiments, and they were known thenceforth until the surrender, in June, 1865,

as Shaver's Infantry Regiment. He participated in all the principal battles fought in the Trans -

Mississippi Department after June, 1862, among which were Prairie Grove, Mansfield, Jen-

kins's Ferry; Poison Springs, Marks Mill, and all the battles incident to Gen. Dick Taylor's

Red River campaign against General Banks, during all of which he displayed his usual gal-

lantry and resourcefulness. That Colonel Shaver was not killed was not his fault, for he gave

the Federals every opportunity on many fields.

At the evacuation of Little Rock, September 10, 1863, Colonel Shaver was in command of his

brigade and covered the Confederate retreat out of the city southward. He was greatly cha-

grined and deeply mortified that he was not permitted to engage the enemy, and he always

contended that General Price should have offered battle; that his forces were numerically su-

perior to the Federals under General Steele and were in fine trim and anxious to fight. It has

been truthfully said of Colonel Shaver that he had rather fight than eat, even after a week's

subsistence on half rations and those who knew him and saw him on the different battle fields

can well testify to his worth as a resourceful officer and a tenacious fighter. He was a soldier

by intuition, adaptability, and desire, and withal a strategist and tactician, a warrior with but

few peers. He is mentioned in twelve different volumes and on many pages of the "Records"

of the Union and Confederate armies, made up of the reports of the various commanding

generals and published after the war by the government.

Colonel Shaver not only had no friends at court, but much strong opposition caused by a political

fight engendered in a State campaign in 1860. One of the defeated candidates for State hon-

ors, being in high authority at Richmond in the Confederate Senate, always opposed Colonel

Shaver's promotion; otherwise he would certainly have attained at least the rank of major

general. With that rank opportunities would have offered which he would have availed effec-

tively, thereby placing him beyond the reach of the deadly enmity of the politician; for as a

military genius he was Gen. Pat Cleburne's equal in every respect, and everybody knows

there were none better than Cleburne.

Colonel Shaver's well-earned sobriquet of "Fighting Bob Shaver" was known throughout the dif-

ferent armies in which he served. He was wounded four times and had six horses killed under

him in action.

A poem on the Arkansas Confederate soldier mentions Colonel Shaver in one of its stanzas, as

follows:

We fought with Lee at Gettysburg,

with Cleburne always our saver,

With Bragg at Chicamauga Creek,

at Shiloh with Bob Shaver.

So loyal was Colonel Shaver to the Confederate cause that he never complained of the ungener-

ous and untoward opposition to him by the politicians and carried the heart wound to his

grave without a murmur.

Colonel Shaver was a member of the Grand Council of the Ku-Klux Klan, and many of the Latin

terms which expressed its polities and tenants bore the earmarks of his ability and scholarly

attainments. He was the highest ranking officer of the Klan in Arkansas, General Forrest be-

ing the highest in the entire Klan, its commander in chief. Early in the winter of 1868 Colonel

Shaver; on account of his connection with the Klan in Arkansas, and especially his campaign

in Woodruff County, in which he participated in two skirmishes against Clayton's Militia,

was forced by the Clayton regime of carpetbaggers, then in power in Arkansas, to leave the

United States, going to British Honduras, where he remained for several years. Returning to

Arkansas, he was appointed sheriff of Howard County by Gov. Elisha Baxter, the carpetbag-

gers in the meantime having been dethroned. Later he was appointed major general of the

Arkansas State Guard, which he at once reorganized, and in 1896 he was elected Commander

of the Arkansas Division, United Confederate Veterans, and at once gave to it its first sem-

blance of organization. This position he held for two years; and not withstanding his great

popularity, fitness, and adaptability for the position, he declined further election, as had been

the custom previously and since, with one lamentable exception. This he did that other com-

rades might share this great and exalted honor. He was greatly adverse to scrambling for U.

C. V positions in the State and gave his influence for rotation after a term of two years.

Camp Shaver; where the Confederate veterans were camped during the Little Rock Confederate

Reunion in 1911, was named for Colonel Shaver; and he was further honored by being placed

in command of the encampment. His duties were executed with loving kindness toward the

old soldiers under his charge, and yet with such military precision that a successful discipline

was accomplished, attractive and beneficial to those participating.

His memory is embalmed in the hearts of his countrymen, and long and deeply will they remem-

ber and appreciate his heroic service for this country's cause."
