COURSE OVERVIEW This is a 90-minute, live course with a hands-on lab experience. This interactive workshop is intended to facilitate clinicians and equipment provider’s knowledge of how to successfully teach manual wheelchair skills to clients in a well configured manual wheelchair (MWC). Clinicians and providers often lack training and first-hand experience with manual wheelchair skills when time and resources are limited. This lack of exposure to skill development can lead to limited translation of MWC skills to the client. This may limit functional outcomes for their clients. This can lead to equipment abandonment and decreased quality of life. This immersive experience is intended to increased awareness of best practice for the fitting, training, and delivery of equipment for manual wheelchair users. Participants will leave this class with the ability to identify key features of the seating system and the ultralight weight manual wheelchair that directly influence wheelchair propulsion, functional reach, stability, and sitting tolerance. Participants will gain an understanding of how the configuration and adjustment of an ultralight weight manual wheelchair directly affects the end user’s functional mobility in home and in the community. After completion of this session, the participant will leave with an increased ability to provide successful power assist and MWC skills training for their clients. LEVEL- Intermediate | INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD- Live lecture | Discussion | Clinical Application | Demonstration CEU OBJECTIVES By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Relate 5 ways that seating components and w/c configuration may impact function and propulsion in the manual wheelchair 2. Use the ICF Model to describe 3 ways a power assist device impacts participation in daily activities at home and in the community 3. Demonstrate proper training techniques for 3 different manual wheelchair skills 4. Complete one outcome measure to demonstrate the success of the equipment recommendation
