Dear Homeowner,

Hi! Thanks for calling. All of us at Liberty Services/Spider Man Pest Control are excited

and grateful for the opportunity to provide information about pest control and help you

choose a pest control company.

After more than 20 years in the pest control industry, we’ve learned that pest control is the

subject of much confusion. In fact, people have so many misconceptions about pest control

that we decided to offer this consumer education message so when you select a pest control

company, you can make an informed, intelligent decision.

Pest control services can be separated into two different categories. The first category is

“general household pest company” and the second category is “outdoor spider/wasp con-

trol.”

Choosing a pest control company isn’t easy.

Why? Because you’re bombarded with misleading advertising, confusing claims and simply bad information.

From super-low prices and high-pressure sales – to unqualified pest technicians and near-worthless methods – how do you ever find a qualified, competent, professional pest control company?

You start by reading this Consumer’s Guide to Pest Control. In this fact-filled booklet, you’ll discover five costly misconceptions about general household pest control. Plus, I’ll offer recommendations to help prevent household pests, and I’ll also give you ten questions you should ask a pest control technician before you let them into your home.

We wrote this guide to help you better understand pest control applications. Now, with this information, you can make an informed, intelligent decision.

And if you have any general questions about pest control, you’re invited to call us 586-294-3111. We’ve dedicated our business to educating consumers. We’ll be happy to help you in every way.

Cordially,

Now here’s…...Misconception Number 1:

“With all of the do-it-yourself pest control products on the market today, the average adult

can handle any insect problems as well as most pest control companies can.”

No. Currently, there are an estimated 21,000 over-the-counter household pesticides to

choose from. Why so many?

Because manufacturers are well aware that one type of bait, one particular pesticide aero-

sol can, granule or powder, or one kind of paste, gel, or glueboard won’t eliminate every

type of bug in your house or your yard. How could any single product target every pest

when there are over one hundred thousand species of insects in the world to contend with?

When you purchase an over the counter pesticide without training, you’re at best making

an educated guess based on reading each product’s label and proper identification of the

insect that you’re dealing with. The fact of the matter is: unless you know insects, it’s

easy to confuse different species and it’s not only important which pesticide that you use,

but how, where, and when that pesticide is applied to get the ultimate protection from each

product.

Also, putting a barrier of a liquid over-the-counter insecticide around the outside perimeter

of your home can be equally as ineffective in controlling or eliminating many insect infes-

tations. To be effective, insects must come in contact with this barrier, and unfortunately,

some of these products do more damage to the paint, linoleum, wood flooring, and carpet-

ing than they do to insects.

So, instead of stocking up on an arsenal of over-the-counter insecticides, your best bet

when it comes to controlling unwanted pests is to simply place a phone call to a licensed,

insured, professional pest control company office.

At Liberty Services/Spider Man Pest Control, once you call, we’ll schedule a free in-

spection of your home at your convenience, so that we can design an individually custom-

ized pest management system specifically tailored to target all insects in your home.

At Liberty Services/Spider Man Pest Control, we take our business seriously. Our tech-

nicians are educated and trained to know how insects think, where they hide, what attracts

them, what repels them, what seasons they’re most active, how they breed, what food

sources attract them, and how they move about. This expertise provides control, when and

where it’s needed, using low odor, low toxicity pesticides that not only will eliminate cur-

rent pest infestations but also prevent new ones.

Misconception Number 2:

“Over-the-counter pesticides are less toxic than the pesticides used by professional pest

control companies.

No. Insect sprays, baits, granules, powders, and rodent poisonings are all considered pes-

ticides by the EPA, yet no special training is required by homeowners to use these over-

the-counter products, even though they can be extremely hazardous when handled, ap-

plied, stored or disposed of improperly.

Some people think that as long as they follow the instructions on the label, a pesticide is

absolutely safe. This isn’t true. Over-the-counter pesticides can pose health risks, even

when applied in full compliance with manufacturer’s recommendations and legal require-

ments.

Many of the ingredients in over-the-counter products are the same compounds contained

in pesticides sold to professional pest control companies. Yet, pest control technicians

must pass written exams on the use, handling and safety of these products as well as have

extensive on the job training to be certified and licensed to apply the products properly.

Technicians must also enroll in continuing education courses to maintain their license.

Where and how a pesticide is applied is critical to avoid exposure to pets and children and

also to avoid tracking. When it comes to choosing a pest control company, your number

one priority should be to find a company that puts your family’s safety first.

We make it mandatory for long term employment that each of our technicians follow pre-

scribed safety practices when servicing your home. Many of the products we use are ac-

tually less toxic and more environmentally friendly than retail pesticides. Yet, they’re

also more effective in controlling and getting rid of unwanted pests.

Our employees are trained to recognize any safety concerns and make a skilled assess-

ment of where and how any products will be applied. Anytime we treat your home for

pests, you’ll be supplied with the name of all pesticides used. A material safety data

sheet is available upon request.

If you have any questions about the products applied at your home, our trained techni-

cians can answer them for you.

Misconception Number 3:

“A reliable pest control company should be able to take care of any problem pests in just one

service call.

Not necessarily. It depends on the pest and the time of year.

While the initial service may eliminate many problem insects in your home at the time of ap-

plication, today’s pesticides are designed to do their job then break down slowly over a few

weeks or a few months to non toxic substances. This biodegradability and low toxicity make

these products better for you and your family but may also require more frequent service trips

to keep some pests under control.

In addition, many pests are seasonal and also are strongly influenced by the weather outside.

Insects can’t generate their own body heat. Instead, they must rely on their environment to

regulate their body temperature so they can thrive, survive and reproduce.

During the winter, a centrally heated home looks awfully inviting to silverfish, for example.

During the summer, an air conditioned home really appeals to spiders, crickets, outdoor

roaches, gnats and ants.

Once we inspect your home, we’ll be able to design a pest management plan that incorporates

several strategies for solutions to target pests before they infest.

Misconception Number 4:

“If I keep my house sparkling clean, I should never get insects.”

No. Even the cleanest homes can be infested by cockroaches, silverfish, moths, ants, spring-

tails, earwigs, centipedes and spiders.

Unfortunately, insects and their eggs can be carried into your home in food, firewood and

other packaging. And, once they’re inside, minute deposits of grease, sugar or other food in

difficult to get at places, such as: drains, behind refrigerators, under dishwashers, or inside

cracks and crevices in kitchen cupboards or bathroom cabinets help these resilient bugs stay

alive and thrive.

Treating various insects with an aerosol insecticide won’t control a growing population.

While do-it-yourself pest control may seem like the answer when you only see one or two

bugs, what you might not realize is by the time you do see certain insects, like ants, it may

well mean that the infestation is out of control and the insects are on the move looking for new

food sources and hiding places for their growing communities.

That’s why it is important to deal with any pest control concern immediately, before it be-

comes a problem!

Page 6: Sharon Schmidt Owner Liberty Services of America, Inc. dba ... · also more effective in controlling and getting rid of unwanted pests. Our employees are trained to recognize any

Misconception Number 5:

“All pest control technicians are salesmen so they’re going to recommend service

whether I need it or not.

No. Most pest control companies are honest. But admittedly, there are a few compa-

nies that give the rest of us in the industry a bad reputation.

As a professional pest control company, we aren’t out to make a quick sale. Our goal

is to make clients for life.

After initial treatment, we may not need to come inside your home at all during some

service calls, since the majority of insects are found outside and can be controlled be-

fore they enter your home. By using baits, pheromones, insect growth regulators and

other specially designed pesticides we can control and prevent most new infestations

through bimonthly or quarterly pest control…

To ensure fewer service trips, it actually takes a cooperative effort between you and

your pest control provider. Now that we’ve cleared up the misconceptions, we’d like

to offer these three recommendations.

1) Another important factor in preventing pests is to make sure they can’t get in-

side your home in the first place. Repair window screens, doors, and door sweeps.

Use caulk to seal cracks in cabinets, along baseboards and around plumbing. Also

make certain that all foundation vents and attic vents are covered with tightly fitted

screens.

2) Outside, landscaping plants are prime places for bugs to multiply. Trim all out-

door plants so they don’t block foundation vents. Firewood should be moved away

from the house. Trash cans should be kept tightly sealed.

3) Also, make sure gutters and downspouts are unclogged and any drainage is di-

rected away from your home’s foundation. Water is most insects’ greatest love. Make

sure sprinklers aren’t aimed toward your house and also repair any leaking faucets or

pipes outside. Keep mulch at least 12 inches away from the home. Mulch is an excel-

lent harborage for many insects.

While these recommendations might not prevent all infestations, by following these

guidelines, you’ll be participating as a much-needed partner in any pest management

program. So now, that you’re going to do your part, what should you look for in a

professional pest control company?

Page 7: Sharon Schmidt Owner Liberty Services of America, Inc. dba ... · also more effective in controlling and getting rid of unwanted pests. Our employees are trained to recognize any

When interviewing a professional pest control provider, keep these ten questions in mind:

1) Are they a member of any national, state or local pest control associations?

2) Are they fully insured and licensed?

3) Are all their technicians licensed, trained and screened by a criminal background

check?

4) What contracts and guarantees do they offer?

5) What limitations apply to their contracts or guarantees?

6) What pesticides will they use and what results can you expect?

7) Do you need to be at home during every service trip?

8) How long has their company been in business?

9) How much do they charge for monthly, bimonthly, quarterly or yearly pest control?

Keep in mind that a real bargain may mean you aren’t dealing with a real professional.

10) Do they offer any emergency services?

A Review From A Satisfied Client

Dr. Helen Nutting, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI (Retired Pediatric Doctor)

I have been a pest control client of Liberty Services (dba Spider Man Pest

Control) since May of 2005, and I have been delighted with the service and the results.

I live close to Lake St. Clair, and the spiders can get very big, plus their

webs sure can make my home look messy. (Not to mention the dropping the spiders leave on the home.)

Prior to choosing Liberty Services to treat my home, I requested MSDS sheets. Being a pediatric doctor, I preferred to research the products be-

ing used on my home before I made my decision. Upon review I found that the products Liberty uses, when applied by a professional, are actu-

ally quite safe.

Chris was the specialist that came to my home for the first application. Chris was very polite, explained the process, and took the time to go over

the areas where I had a special concern. Every year I choose the “One Time Treatment.” The office schedules my application in May, and the

guarantee is through October. If I see spiders or webs, I can call Liberty and they will come back out at no charge to retreat the areas of concern.

So far, I have not had to call them for another treatment.

I am really pleased with the results! WOW, what a difference a treatment

makes. Those messy webs are gone, and the spiders disappear.

I Just want to thank Liberty Services for the excellent service I have re-ceived over the years.
