Coach, mentor and friend are words that are commonly used when speaking about “Johnny J”. He first started his career with Lethbridge College as a Kodiak athlete in 1972 where he was a member of three consecutive ACAC championship teams. In 1984 he began coaching the women’s basketball team, then proceeded to guide his teams over the next 8 years to four ACAC titles, three with the women’s team and one with the men’s.
Throughout his coaching career, he easily forged long lasting and close relationships with his players. He spent many hours with his players and often brought his daughters on road trips when the teams travelled. But not only did he invest his time in his athletes during their time playing at Lethbridge College, he also went the extra mile to explore options for those players wanting to continue their basketball careers after leaving Lethbridge College.
