SHARKS
Sharks
• Sharks have been on earth for more than 450 million years. Older than dinosaurs.
• Sharks belong to the class of fish: Chondrichtyes.
• More than 400 shark species
Habitat
• Generally live in waters from 7,000 feet to 10,000 feet.
• Only come to the surface when searching for food.
Physical Characteristics
• Cartilage skeleton: flexible and lighter tissue for better movement.
• Skin: made up of dentricles which are hard, sharp teeth that help protect from injuries
The Mouth• Can move their upper and lower jaws
• Each type of shark has different shaped teeth depending on what it eats.
• Sharks have many rows of teeth. As teeth wear down or fallout those from the back move into forward slots.
Diet• Most sharks are carnivores. • Live on a diet of fish and sea mammals
(dolphins and seals). • Some sharks will eat other sharks. • Sharks have super senses that help them find
predators. – 2/3 of their brain is dedicated to smell– Can feel vibrations to alert of potential prey
