Jenks History

The city of Jenks was founded in 1905, beginning as a rural railroad settlement.

Jenks was established by an agreement between the Midland Valley Railroad and Midland Valley Townsite Company and was named for railroad official Elmer E. Jenks.

The area population exploded in 1906 with the discovery of the Glenn Pool oil field.

As the oil boom took hold, the expensive oil tanks and equipment increased area property values and produced revenue for the Jenks school system.

Today, Jenks is a prosperous city for the arts, education, business, entertainment and community.

Located along the shore of the Arkansas River, Jenks is a premier location to raise a family or start a business.

Jenks is home to one of the top school districts in Oklahoma, consistently graduating National Merit Scholars and achieving excellence in academics, athletics and the arts. With a planetarium and Olympic-sized swimming facility on campus, Jenks Public Schools can provide an educational experience beyond compare for local students.

The Downtown Commons is a green space designed to bring the community together, located off of the vibrant Main Street. With a built-in stage, food truck accessibility and seating for several hundred, the Downtown Commons is designed to draw visitors to Main Street like never before.

Through all this development, the arts play a major role in attracting locals and visitors alike to Jenks. Opened in 2015, the Hive is a 6,000-square-foot art gallery and workspace, showcasing work from area artists on a rotating basis. Beyond downtown, Jenks is uniquely nestled along the Arkansas River, and RiverWalk Crossing is the region’s

premier waterfront shopping, dining and entertainment destination. Just across the bridge sits River Spirit Resort and Casino. River Spirit boasts one of the largest gaming floors in Oklahoma and is home to Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville casino and restaurant.

Finally, the community is home to the Oklahoma Aquarium, which boasts the biggest bull sharks in captivity. The Polynesian Reef – the second largest exhibit – contains more than 75 different species. The Secret World of the Octopus exhibit is the next to open in Spring 2020.

Jenks Education

Founded in 1908, Jenks Public Schools encompasses the city of Jenks on the west side of the Arkansas River, and portions of South Tulsa on the east side of the Arkansas River. The District is made up of 10 distinct school sites with an overall enrollment of 12,600 students and approximately 1,600 staff members.

On the surface, school districts have plenty in common.

Jenks Public Schools is not only set apart by the character and caliber of its employees, but also by the unwavering belief in continuous improvement, and the commitment to creating opportunities for every student in every grade level. From the array of professional development experiences offered to staff members, to providing STEM Learning Labs for students at every school site, JPS is consistently raising the bar to be forward-thinking and innovative in its approach to education. Continuous improvement means

setting up students for success at every turn. It means providing one-of-a-kind experiences to students by utilizing the latest technology, adapting teaching tactics to help students achieve college and career readiness, and identifying teachers who can engage and inspire their students. The standards at Jenks Public Schools are lofty. The expectations are high.

Those expectations are met year after year thanks in part to the unwavering support of the Jenks community. With the involvement and engagement of parents, volunteers, and local

businesses, JPS is able to keep up with the demands of growing enrollment while inspiring pride in all citizens who live within the district boundaries. Jenks’ voters have approved 55 of the last 56 bond elections, and in recent years, those bond dollars have allowed JPS to construct a new elementary school (Northwest Elementary), complete major renovations

to Jenks High School, add a new classroom wing at Jenks Middle School, and begin an expansion project at the Freshman Academy. Bond funds have also been used to provide every student from 7th-12th grade with a Chromebook computer and to add a STEM Learning Lab at every school site.

Jenks and the Tulsa market are located in the heart of a number of higher education institutions.

Tulsa Tech, the oldest and largest technology center in Oklahoma’s Career Tech system, is located squarely in the Jenks community. Tech’s Riverside campus was established in 1999 and occupies 38 acres next to RL Jones Jr. Airport and is the hub of the Tulsa Aviation Education Alliance. The campus’ 283,000 square feet of classrooms, laboratories and shops serve nearly 800 students per year.

Tulsa Community College has multiple campuses in the region and

educates more than 25,000 students each year.

With knowledgeable faculty teaching in state-of-the-art facilities on the four campuses, TCC offers programs for students at every stage of life, robust online learning opportunities, and a commitment to affordable excellence.

Oral Roberts University and the Univeristy of Tulsa are private colleges offering degrees in a wide field of areas.

Tulsa is also home to University of Oklahoma-Tulsa and Oklahoma State University – Tulsa.

Jenks High School has one of Oklahoma’s most successful high school football programs.

The Trojans have captured 16 state football championships and produced multiple Division 1 and NFL football stars.

Jenks grads to play in the NFL include Rocky Calmus, Sean Mahan, Garrett Mills, Phillip Dillard, Jerry Wisne, Chase Beeler, and Steven Parker.

Stadium, named after Jenks’ longtime – and most successful – football coach.

Jenks plays in the 6A-I division, playing division opponents including longtime rival Union, Broken Arrow, Enid, Yukon and Norman.

Jenks has enjoyed several multi-season championships including runs from 1996-2001 and again from 2012-2015.

Key investments by the Jenks community have yielded some of the region’s nicest parks and green spaces.

In 2019, Jenks’ 15,000 square foot skateboard park, located at Veterans Park, 305 S. Birch St., opened to skateboarders, Rollerbladers and scooter afficianados. Veterans Park also includes abundant playground equipment, a stocked fishing ponds and docks, at covered pavilions for families to enjoy.

Jenks is also home to the Downtown Commons, a green space located in the heart of downtown. The Commons, 220 E. A St., is home to community movie nights, live music and community

festivals including the Jenks America Freedom Fest.One of the newest parks provides a much-needed gathering

place for Jenks’ four-legged residents. Located at W. Main St. & Koa St., BarkWest is nestled among the trees near the existing Park West athletic fields. The 3-acre dog park features a fenced area for small dogs, separate area for large dogs, benches and water fountains. BarkWest opened Spring 2018 and is now a favorite spot for local pets.

Jenks also has abundant trails throughout the community that connect to the Riverside trail system in Tulsa.

Festivals

Herb and Plant Festival The Herb and Plant Festival

is a perennial favorite for gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Organized by the Jenks Garden Club, it takes place every April on Main Street.

Featuring more than 100 vendors, this free-to-attend festival draws more than 10,000 shoppers looking for annuals, hanging baskets, herbs, tomato plants and more.

Aquarium Run Held in April and presented

by the Oklahoma Aquarium, this popular event includes a fun run, 5K, 10K and half-marathon.

Runners from across the area converge on Jenks in order to compete.

Jenks America Food Truck Festival

Jenks America Freedom Fest Downtown Jenks becomes

the epicenter of Americana on Independence Day.

Los Cabos Boomfest Featuring one of the state’s

largest fireworks displays, Los Cabos Boomfest draws tens of thousands of visitors annually to Jenks and the Arkansas River.

SharklahomaSharklahoma is a celebration

of all things shark, spanning the entire month of July.

A joint collaboration between the Oklahoma Aquarium and the Jenks Chamber of Commerce, Sharklahoma was created in 2019 as a celebration of sharks.

The Oklahoma Aquarium provides education on the truth about sharks, opportunities to watch shark feedings and other special activities. Local businesses also provide shark-related entertainment throughout Jenks.

Hometown Huddle The Hometown Huddle

is a community-wide event each September to kick-start the Jenks High School Trojan football season. Festivities include a pep rally and community block party before the home football game kicks off. It takes place just outside Hunter-Dwelley Field. The Hometown Huddle is hosted by the Jenks Public Schools Foundation. For more information, visit jenksfoundation.org.

Lights On! This kick-off to the holiday

shopping season serves to highlight the great businesses in Jenks and the community as a whole.

The Lights On ceremony ushers in the celebration as the community gathers to watch the official switching on of the Christmas lights on Main Street.

Tulsa Premium Outlets is set to open in the spring of 2021, per Simon Premium Outlets CEO Stephen Yalof.

The outlet mall has been rumored for years, but questions were answered when the purchase of the land south of the Creek Turnpike and east of Elm Street in Jenks. Yalof said the company is excited to bring the mall to Jenks.

“Tulsa Premium Outlets has found the perfect home right here in Jenks,” Yalof said. “We’re thankful for the city’s partnership and all the work it has invested in preparation for this landmark project. Simon looks forward to continued collaboration as we build a regional shopping destination that will offer a

vibrant store mix and family-friendly amenities for the Jenks community – and beyond.”

Yalof expressed the excitement Simon Premium Outlets has for the project and its opening date.

“At the heart of Simon’s strategy is connecting with communities where we can raise the bar for a new shopping experience, and we are proud to confirm we’ve found that opportunity in the Tulsa market,” Yalof said. “Tulsa Premium Outlets will be a regional destination that offers strong value, fantastic fashion and an unparalleled experience for our guests. We are working

towards a spring 2021 opening and look forward to sharing the center’s progress as it unfolds.”

Simon Premium Outlets purchased the 51 acres earlier this month from the River District Development Group LLC.

In an interview after the announcement of the purchase, Jenks mayor Robert Lee told the Jenks Tribune about the many impacts the mall could have on the city.

“It’s also going to bring many positive impacts to the entire area,” Lee said. “The aquarium, the downtown area and also the Riverwalk. Anything that helps them out is a good thing.”

Sharklahoma is a joint effort between the Oklahoma Aquarium and the Jenks Chamber of Commerce, designed to enhance the celebration of sharks, the Oklahoma Aquarium, and Jenks, Oklahoma.

The inaugural celebration in July 2019 featured a screening of Jaws in the Oklahoma Aquarium, Shipley (Oklahoma Aquarium mascot) visits to Jenks businesses, a screening of Sharknado and Q&A with screenwriter Thunder Levin, and more shark-related fun.

The Aquarium provided opportunities for visitors to witness shark feeds, and kids could become marine biologists for a day. The Oklahoma Aquarium is home to

the only bull shark exhibit in the Western Hemisphere.

“The Oklahoma Aquarium is grateful to the community and guests from around the world for their support of our nonprofit, particularly our sharks,” said Andrea Leitch, Chief Marketing Officer of the Oklahoma Aquarium. “Sharklahoma allows us to partner with the community, while also raising awareness about importance of sharks and their ecological and economic impact.”For more information about Sharklahoma and information on 2020’s upcoming events, visit sharklahoma.com.

Got Wood Axe Throwing Co. brings a unique – and sharp – form of entertainment to the city of Jenks. Opened in 2017, Got Wood provides a relaxed and fun environment for those who have never held an axe before, to those most dedicated to the sport through competition.

Owner Jason Kearney, alongside his business partner Dr. Dan Langley, saw a great opportunity to bring axe throwing to the Jenks area.

“I operated a previous business in Jenks called Beard and Blade,” Kearney said. “I fell in love with Jenks. When the axe throwing opportunity came up, it was a natural fit.”

Indoor axe throwing is safe and fun, with professional instructors available to get customers hitting targets in no time. An expansive selection of local beer, among other refreshments are available to participants.

Got Wood takes reservations in advance, making them a great activity for a date night, corporate outing, team building exercise, birthday or a bachelor or bachelorette party.

The aquarium also offers special features including shark feeding shows, interactive animal experiences, and behind-the-scenes tours. Monthly public events take place for visitors of all ages, from indoor trick-or-treating at HallowMarine for kids to beer tasting at Splash: Lagers and Loggerheads for adults, to food truck and salsa festivals and more, there is always something for the whole family.

The Secret World of the Octopus exhibit is the next to open in early 2020. The exhibit will allow visitors to see a 360-degree view of a giant Pacific octopus in a large cylinder tank with a shipwreck structure.
