Welcome to the winter edition of the K&S Corporation newsletter for 2013. This newsletter is an important tool that we use to communicate what is happening within K&S Freighters, DTM Business Logistics, Regal Transport, K&S New Zealand and K&S Fuels.

The feedback from our first newsletter was extremely positive and we have seen our employees embrace it by sending stories and photos to share. I would like to thank you for your participation and continued support.

We are experiencing challenging times in the current economic climate and remain focused on continuing to work hard to provide strong service and client relationships, whilst looking for innovative cost solutions.

Our growth continues for Regal Transport securing the Argyle Diamond Mine contract. Our supply chain services commence on the 1st September, 2013. This will give us substantial coverage of the North West region of WA and open up opportunities in Darwin, NT.

We recently purchased 14.6 hectares of land at Bullsbrook, WA. The new location is approximately 30km from the current site of Regal Transport, South Guildford WA. Plans are underway for the development of the new terminal and we anticipate commencement in 2014.

Looking ahead our focus area is to continue to explore opportunities to grow organically and through carefully targeted acquisitions. We will continue to drive costs down gearing towards a safe and sustainable business.

Safety is an integral part of the business and is built into all employees’ roles and responsibilities. If you have any improvement ideas and solutions in making K&S a safer place to work please see page 3 of the newsletter for more details of how to get involved. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to report anything you believe to be unsafe to your supervisor or manager.

I look forward to your continued contribution towards safety and working with you in making the remainder of 2013 a safe and successful year for all.

Greg Stevenson

Fast Facts about.... The minerals sector in Australia! Source: www.ga.gov.au

K&S CORPORATION LIMITED // On the move //

> Australia is a leading producer of minerals for the world and produces some 22 minerals from more than 300 operating mines.

> Minerals are produced in all States and the Northern Territory. There is no mining in the Australian Capital Territory apart from quarries used to mine aggregate and other construction materials.

> Minerals are an important part of the Australian economy, accounting for about seven per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).

> Mining employs around 167,000 people directly and a further 153,000 indirectly.

> Minerals are Australia’s largest export and were worth approximately $114 billion in 2009 (excluding petroleum), accounting for around 46 per cent of total exports and 58 per cent of merchandise exports.

> Australia mining companies trade freely in the global marketplace, exporting goods on a commercial basis around the world with the major markets for Australian mineral exports being Japan, China, Korea and India.

> Australia is in the top five mineral producers and is the world’s leading producer of bauxite, alumina, rutile, and zircon; the second largest producer of gold, iron ore, lead, zinc, lithium and manganese ore; the third largest producer of uranium; the fourth largest producer of nickel; and the fifth largest producer of aluminum, brown coal, industrial diamond and silver (Table 1).

> Australia also has the largest identified resources of lead, nickel, rutile, silver, uranium, zinc and zircon, and the second largest resources of bauxite, copper, gold, iron ore, niobium and tantalum. Australia’s lithium resources are ranked third, and black coal resources ranked fifth in the world (Table 1).

> Minerals are essential to modern living and have a very wide range of applications, including coal for fuel for electricity and steel production and ores for the production of a wide range of metals and mineral products including iron ore to produce steel used in construction, ships, motor vehicles, and machinery; bauxite for aluminium; copper for electrical wiring and plumbing; and metals for a wide range of alloys, such as nickel for stainless steel. The 2013 Don Watson Memorial AwardThe Don Watson Memorial Award was presented by the Australian Trucking Association at a recent event on Hamilton Island to Simon Skazlic (K&S General Manager, HS&E/Compliance) who has given conspicuous service to the Australian trucking Industry. Simon was selected from a range of exceptional people who do not need to be nominated to be considered.

Simon is among two other K&S employees who have had the privilege of winning this award, in 2001 Des Ind National Equipment Manager and 1998 Legh Winser previous Managing Director. We interviewed Simon, this is what he had to say.

How long have you been in the Industry? I’ve been in the Industry for over twenty years, starting with K&S in 1990.

What types of roles have you held? I’ve worked in Administration, Operations and State Management, Commercial, Fleet/Linehaul & Maintenance, Quality and Compliance and now Health, Safety and Environment / Compliance.

What is some of the Industry work you have been involved in?1. I have been an Australian Trucking Association (ATA) Council

Member for 10 years and a member of a number of key result area sub committees.

2. I was a member of the Industry Training Advisory Board for close to 10 years and during that time I served as Deputy Chair and Chair for four years. The board was involved with establishment and the design of the Transport and Distribution training packages including training units of competencies against certificate levels.

3. The ATA Industry group which developed with the NTC and other regulators, the current structure and design of driving hours regulation which includes standard hours, basic fatigue management and advanced fatigue management.

4. The development of Industry “balance score card” tool, for the determining of operational control under the NGER (National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting) Act, which requires corporations that meet certain thresholds for greenhouse gas emissions and energy production and consumption to report to the Greenhouse and Energy Data Officer.

5. A member of a joint Industry committee known as the LUEZ (loading, unloading exclusion zone) Committee which developed best practice guidelines for the safety of truck drivers and other personnel around mobile plant during the process of loading and unloading vehicles.

The guidelines are based on three fundamental principles that should be incorporated into any system for managing loading and unloading. These are:

> forklifts and other equipment used for loading and unloading, and drivers and other pedestrians, should be segregated;

> authority for the area where loading and unloading is occurring should reside with the forklift operator; and

> if the driver ceases to be in the direct line of sight of the forklift operator, then activity should immediately stop until line of sight is re-established.

The guidelines set out best practice controls for implementing these principles in any business.

6. A member of a joint Industry committee which has developed Industry guidelines to assist employers, drivers and mechanical service providers to implement effective controls during the repair of a broken down truck by the roadside. The guidelines are referred to as TEBARS (Truck Emergency Breakdown and Roadside Safety).

What is your inspiration? I find the challenge in analysing and reaching solutions that are practical and beneficial for the wider Industry most rewarding. The sense of achievement is gratifying however most enjoyable is working with like minded people in reaching these milestones. Many of these people have become lifelong colleagues and friends.

How did you feel when you won the award? I was very surprised, I had no inclination whatsoever that I would be considered for such a prestigious award, having said that it is an extreme honour to be recognised by your Industry peers.

Congratulations Simon Skazlic, K&S Freighters GM of HS&E/Compliance for being a great ambassador and contributor to the Industry we all love and being selected as the winner by the ATA for this prestigious Industry Award.

L-R : The 2013 Don Watson Memorial Award winner, Simon Skazlic, with ATA Chairman David Simon.

Snapshot of K&S

in Australia and New Zealand

K&S FreightersGraeme Wooller, Chief Operating Officer, gives an overview of his business

“K&S Freighters is instrumental in maintaining Coal Tar Pitch supply to Alcoa and client confirms zero incidents on site”K&S Freighters was called upon in mid April by Koppers Carbon Materials & Chemicals Pty Ltd, a long term customer of K&S, to assist in the transportation of Coal Tar Pitch from their Newcastle Plant to Alcoa’s plants at Point Henry and Portland in regional Victoria.

Coal Tar Pitch for the aluminum industry is produced in liquid form and transported in insulated and/or heated road tankers, subject to travel distances, at approximately 220 degrees Celsius.

The call from Koppers came following the breakdown of the “Asphalt Carrier” a vessel carrying 3,500 tonnes of Coal Tar Pitch destined for their Pitch storage tank at the Port of Portland. The Koppers facility at Portland is strategically positioned to supply Pitch to the Alcoa Aluminum smelters at both Portland and Point Henry.

Coal Tar Pitch stocks were rapidly becoming depleted, and in the absence of supply, the Alcoa smelters faced potential shut down. Without regional stock, it became necessary to transport the product from Koppers Newcastle reserves to the Alcoa Smelters by road, given that an alternative vessel, the “Rathboyne” would not arrive in Portland until 12th of May. Also of concern was the continuity of supply beyond the 12th May given the uncertainty of when the “Asphalt Carrier” would be back in service.

With a long history of providing transport services to both Alcoa and Koppers, the K&S team set about sourcing a sufficient fleet of heated road tankers in both single and B-double configuration to maintain supply of the Coal Tar Pitch to the Point Henry and Portland Smelters. The task was challenging given the considerable consumption of Pitch at both smelters, the travel distances and the specialised equipment necessary to maintain supply.

Suffice is to say that K&S ticked all the boxes, engaging up to 16, Single and B-double tankers to maintain supply of Pitch right through until mid June when the “Asphalt Carrier” ultimately arrived in Portland. The fleet of road tankers working 24 hours, 7 days per week, carried approximately 5,000 tonnes of Coal Tar Pitch from mid April until mid June, ensuring that Alcoa could maintain production throughout this critical period.

The success of the project was largely due to our Portland team of Reece Whitehead, Simon Wilson, Barry Alford, Glen Holmes, Joel Hanlon from Geelong and Larry Crane our Alcoa Account Manager . This team were on call 24/7 ensuring the continuity of supply and the success of the project.

In a letter of appreciation from Alan Cransberg, Chairman & Managing Director of Alcoa World Alumina Australia, Alan wrote to Graeme Wooller, our Chief Operating Officer:

“ On behalf of all the team at Alcoa, please accept my personal thanks for your efforts in maintaining the pitch supply to the Alcoa Victorian smelters over the past three months.

Ensuring adequate raw material supply is critical to the ongoing viability and success of our business and we faced a number of challenges with Coal Tar Pitch supply given the events that unfolded over the past few months. The complex nature of Coal Tar Pitch presented further challenges to this project.

The passion, commitment and dedication of you and your team throughout this project has been recognised and appreciated throughout Alcoa. We are proud of how this process was managed and acknowledge that this project would not have been a success without the contribution from you and your people. In particular we would appreciate you passing on our thanks to Reece, Simon, Malcolm, Larry and Barry.

I am pleased to be able to reflect on this project knowing it was delivered at a high standard and despite the urgency, with no reported safety issues or incidents.

This project has enhanced our already strong relationship.”

Regal TransportGiles Everest, Executive General Manager, tells us his news from Western Australia

K&S New ZealandGreg Cochrane, General Manager, fills us in on what’s happening in New Zealand

“New Zealand business determined to triumph over poor weather”A significant highlight in the North Island of NZ is that our “KIWI DROUGHT” has broken, yes it’s finally rained.

We may all laugh but our NZ business is hugely reliant on the weather, strong grass growth for the dairy industry provides us with an extended season and a strong finish to our financial year. A strong dairy season also stimulates spending, therefore all business sectors in NZ will benefit.

Horticulture New Zealand, the Pseudomonas Syringae pv Actinidie (PSA-V) bug which “rocked” the Kiwifruit Industry last year and threatened to decimate crops has lost traction. The 2013 crop will be down 10% this year but will gain momentum with growers moving to a more heartier plant. K&S are contracted to cart a large proportion of the Bay Of Plenty crop which we have enjoyed over the last 15 years, again this business is very much weather reliant.

Over the last 18 months we have been designing our new truck and trailers to meet the newly released “Weights and Dimensions Policy”. This season we will have 20 units able to cart 58 tonne gross (up from 44 tonne) while previous season we had 4 units.

Our focus for the next 3 months is to work with our customers to gain the maximum efficiencies possible from these units.

EROAD, which is our GPS provider has just released their Messaging Solution, this enables us to send out jobs direct to the truck, speeding up the process of dispatching while simplifying the translation of order and release numbers for the driver.

With the addition of four new internationals, plus some Kiwi ingenuity on existing trailers raising our total fleet capacity, we move out of the dull winter months and into spring forecasting a busy season for the K&S team ahead.

“Argyle Mine win provides complete coverage of the Kimberley and opens up a range of opportunities for Regal”Our growth continues in WA with Regal recently securing the Argyle Diamond Mine transport contract. This will commence in September and will include the establishment of a new Regal facility in Kununurra, some 180km from the remote Argyle Diamond Mine and 3,200km from Perth. This will give us relatively complete coverage of the Kimberley region in WA and improve our capacity to service Darwin in the Northern Territory. This win also demonstrates to the market that Regal are capable of servicing major contracts with Argyle Diamonds being part of Rio Tinto. This will no doubt provide more opportunities in the coming years.

Another recent win for Regal Transport through our project services division was the commencement of bulk haulage transportation of Ammonium Nitrate for Dyno Nobel between Perth and Mine sites around Newman. This work further demonstrates Regal and K&S’s capacity and capability and will hopefully open up further bulk haulage opportunities in Western Australia.

The next three months are going to be challenging with the economic climate and new opportunities set to keep us all on our toes. To meet the challenges of the current environment and deliver on Regal Transport’s 5 years strategy, our focus will be to retain existing customers and aggressively look for growth opportunities. We will continue to focus on improved customer service levels throughout the business while actively seeking new business through ongoing targeted sales and marketing in the Pilbara and Kimberley.

Finally, a strong focus on safety and improving safety culture will remain the number one priority for Regal as we aim to further reduce workplace injuries and achieve our targeted LTIFR of less than 5. A significant achievement for Regal Transport is our reduced Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) to 7 from greater than 30 in 2011. This is a tremendous achievement and thanks to the commitment of all Regal Transport employees to make safety our highest priority.

From a personal perspective, thanks to the efforts of our people and the support of K&S, Regal Transport is well positioned in the WA market and recognised for service and reliability. Although we have seen the economy slow somewhat, there are so many opportunities that weren’t open to us in the past that I am genuinely excited about and I feel that if we keep up our commitment to customer service and improving our safety performance, more and more opportunities are going to come our way.

Latest addition to K&S Family!

DTM Business LogisticsPaul Sarant, Executive General Manager, updates us on his area of the business

K&S FuelsPeter Sims, General Manager, tells us about his business

“DTM focuses on safety and acknowledges employees for 6 months free of Lost Time Injuries (LTI’s)” It has definitely been an indifferent winter for us. There has been much change in a relatively short period of time. We are extremely busy with several major tenders that provide our business great potential opportunities. Unfortunately our South Australian State Manager, David Del Corso, succumbed to his battle with pancreatic cancer. We have welcomed David Smith as his successor to lead a very good team and continue its ongoing growth.

In the last newsletter we detailed our key priorities, particularly our need to continue to improve our safety performance and develop our fuel and gas distribution business. I want to focus further on safety.

Safety has a different meaning to most people. What one individual may consider to be a safe practice others may not. Familiarisation of a task or work environment can be at times a disadvantage not an advantage. Safe Operating Procedures are a method we use to establish and control risks we have previously identified. Risk identification, ranking and elimination are key components of the overall process. Ultimately human behaviour will make or break the total process.

There is no doubt we have continued to improve our overall safety performance. We had less Lost Time Injury’s (LTI’s) than the previous year, in fact 6 months LTI free. In addition LTI’s reduced from 11 to 9. However that’s only one part of the story. The severity of the LTI’s we incurred was far worse than the previous year. That means fewer incidents, but worse events when they happened.

Familiarity has no doubt contributed to several of our LTI’s. When we investigate incidents commonly it is the human factor that has been the major contributing factor to the incident. No one ever thinks they will get injured. A bad decision and a split second can change that.

History has many examples; the Titanic, the Westgate Bridge failure, BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil rig explosion, NASA’s Challenger space shuttle explosion and Russia’s Chernobyl nuclear reactor meltdown. Unfortunately it is a very long list. All of these tragic events could have been avoided.

And the simplest example of all, seat belts only work if you use them. So science, technology and engineering can dramatically improve our safety. We need you to take 5, think about what you are doing, identify risks and work with everyone else in your team to eliminate them and most importantly, you must be your brother’s keeper. If you see someone else about to do something that is not safe, look after them, stop them and help them. No doubt they will return the favour and in doing so we will all be grateful. This needs to be a core part of our culture.

“K&S Fuels met with Caltex Management to unveil a 3 year plan for growth opportunity and training”Reflecting on the last 3 months, our key highlights include a recent meeting between Caltex Business Managers and the K&S Fuels Management Team, where a 3 year business plan was formulated with outcomes to benefit both parties. Caltex has committed to support and help develop our people and improve our fuel distributorship over the coming years. This will include opportunities for growth in new business and support in oils and lubricant promotions throughout the South East Area.

We recently commissioned a retail fuel outlet in Kingston, South East of South Australia. K&S Fuels have a number of third party reseller sites spread throughout their local distributorship area in South East, South Australia. This will be a good location for travelling account customers and also to external customers that have a Caltex Starcard. The site, 190 Mile Roadhouse, Princes Hwy Kingston, SE South Australia with Caltex support, has been branded with new I.D. Pole, Caltex canopy signage, price boards, new fuel pumps and a 24 hour fuel card acceptor that will take all major credit/debit cards. This will lift the image and service to all existing and prospective customers.

We have recently purchased a new fuel delivery truck. This vehicle will be used for servicing farm, fishing, commercial, service stations and small business account customers. The new truck will also deliver heating oil, see photo below.

Moving forward, our key priorities and focus areas are the Beachport fishing installation. K&S Fuels will complete the last stage of upgrade to Australian Standards replacing old pipe work from the jetty to tank, with UPP double containment pipe work. Installation of solenoid safety valves at fuel dispenser unit on jetty and at fuel storage tank on land. This will meet environmental requirements and complete the fishing installation to Australian Standards.

With a future prospect of securing a third party retail site in Penola, this is in close proximity to the Coonawarra wine region. Strategically this will give K&S Fuels the complete cover around the South East of South Australia to enable us to capture every litre and to provide a 24hrs, 7 days a week fuel offer for all our existing customers and give our business a greater opportunity to grow.

In closing, I am excited that K&S Fuels and Caltex have partnered to invest in our people, Caltex training of K&S Fuels retail staff will commence with a designated trainer and full on-going support. The training will include compliance issues, tobacco sales, food safety, shop layouts, financial analysis, HS&E and shop sales. In addition

there will be a training session on advanced product knowledge on the full range of oils and lubricants.

Everybody Safe - Every Day!

The issue of safety around trucks when broken down on the roadside is a significant safety issue confronting the Transport Industry along with the wider community. For several years K&S (represented by Simon Skazlic – General Manager HS&E/Compliance) teamed up with WorkSafe Victoria and a number of other industry participants with the aim to develop guidance material that could be shared across the industry in order to eliminate or reduce the potential for injuries where vehicle and people interaction occurs when attending to a broken down truck on the roadside (up to the point of towing).

The developed Industry Guidelines were recently endorsed by the Transport Industry Safety Group, and scheduled to be launched during Freight Week on Safety Day - Thursday 8th September 2013.

During the project there were a number of K&S personnel who were involved and/or who assisted in the development of the guidance material, they included:

> Robert Boer K&S National Maintenance Manager> Ken Nunn K&S Mechanic, Truganina> Garry Solis K&S Mechanic, Truganina> Jeff Harper K&S Operations Manager, Geelong> John Peoples K&S Driver, Geelong

Additionally, K&S and the project team were supported by our long standing tyre supplier in Bridgestone, who along with their staff shared the issues confronting tyre fitters during breakdown situations on the road. Bridgestone personnel involved included:

> Steve Gleeson Bridgestone Commercial Sales Manager Vic/Tas

> Paul Parry Bridgestone Tyre Fitter> Luke Meleunbrock Bridgestone Tyre Fitter

The contribution of all those involved in the project has proved to be invaluable.

The guideline now becomes the state of knowledge in the industry and will be freely available to all industry participants, via various industry websites.

Holden looks for our support

General Motors Holden – Supplier Employee ProgramMost people would be aware of the issues facing the Australian Car Manufacturers, this was highlighted by the recent announcement that Ford will be closing their Australian manufacturing sites in the next three years.

K&S Freighters in Adelaide has the Holden contract to transport and warehouse imported steel coil that arrives via ship at Port Adelaide. Our warehouse located at Port Adelaide, stores up to 20,000 tonne of imported steel that then is individually ordered by coil for the Elizabeth plant, to align with manufacturing cycles.

The services levels and stock management are highly commended by Holden, and earlier this year we were successful in retaining this contract for an additional three years. Congratulations to Michael McKechnie and his team in Adelaide.

As a key supplier to GMH (General Motors Holden), we keep a keen interest into the viability of Australian Car Manufacturers. Holden assist this process by holding regular supplier conferences that enable all suppliers to be kept informed of all the latest news within Holden. These conferences are led by GMH’s Managing Director, Mike Devereux, and as a regular attendee are brutally honest and refreshing as to the transparency communicated of Holden’s issues in today’s environment.

Holden are now looking for our support, I can now confirm from the last Supplier Conference held on the 1st of August, that Holden are offering all employees of K&S Freighters, DTM Business Logistics and Regal Transport Group an opportunity to participate in their supplier employee program.

This new program allows employees to purchase up to two vehicles per year and receive an additional bonus discount. The bonus discount varies per vehicle model, refer to table, this discount is on top of the best deal you can negotiate.

How the program works:> Employee inputs email address & password - as issued by Holden

post receiving registration form/s (Anna Austin K&S Corporation has these details).

> System sends new log in details & new password to employee email address.

> Employee signs on and navigates to www.holden.com.au website.> Selects a vehicle.> Certificate sent to Employee to use with purchase.> Certificates can be used at any Holden Dealer.

How it works at the Holden Dealer:> Choose a Dealer for the transaction.> Negotiate a best price for the Holden vehicle.> Apply the Holden Discount over the negotiated deal – works just like

a Bunnings voucher!> You pay the balance (e.g. Negotiated price $100, Discount Voucher

$10, you Pay $90).

Meet our People

Chris and Daniel Van Den Heuvel Two Up Driver Team

Business/Department you work for? Regal Transport, South Guildford WA

Years with K&S? We have been with the Company for 2 and a half years as a father son team.

What’s your typical day like? (Daniel) Our run consists of 3 trips a fortnight; we start at the Perth depot where our trailers are already loaded. After we check the trailers over and hook up we travel 260km North where we pick up our third trailer which makes the total length of our vehicle 53.5 metres. We travel along the Great Northern Highway to Broome 1950kms or Derby 2103kms. A round trip from Perth to Broome and return is 4420kms and round trip to Derby 4726kms.

(Chris) We have seen in our time driving up North, temperatures soar to 40 degrees + heat to extreme cyclone rain, in extreme rain we have seen flood ways rise from 700mm to 2.5m in 15 minutes.

What attracted you to work for K&S? (Daniel) What attracted me to the job is the Company’s good reputation and the balance between work and home life.

What do you do in your spare time? (Chris) Spending time with my family especially my Grandson. (Daniel) Family time whether it be going to the beach or just relaxing at home, of course there has to be some time for play station!

If you were stranded on a deserted island who is the one person you would want with you and why? (Chris) I would take my wife because she is very resourceful and always makes me laugh.

If you won the lottery what is the first thing you would buy? (Daniel) A luxury holiday touring the world.

Favourite quote or motto in life? (Daniel) Life’s journey is not about arriving at the grave safely in a well preserved body but rather to slide in sideways totally worn out shouting ‘what a ride”.

(Chris) Life is not about work and money, it is about family.

Craig du Bruyn Team Leader

Business/department you work for? Workshop, K&S Freighters NZ

Years with K&S? Almost 4 years.

What’s your typical day like? I arrive in the early morning and have a quick update with the team to sort out any issues or concerns. I then tackle the Warrant of Fitness (WOF’s) & Certificate of Fitness (COF’s) starting with the inspection and any minor repairs. Any major concerns or repairs are diverted to the workshop to fit in with their schedule. I take vehicles for testing at VTNZ and attend to any issues arising from that. In between the servicing of vehicles, dealing with break downs, service reps, on site driver issues, I implement the maintenance and work program plans for the mechanics team as discussed with the Fleet Manager.

What attracted you to work for K&S? In the past I have predominantly worked with Fleet vehicles and found this more enterprising, I have preferred to work with Fleets.

What do you do in your spare time? I study for the National Certificate in First Line Management Level 4. I have been trying to get into trout fishing. I used to enjoy the trail bike riding, but I was finding it was taking too long to recover from the injuries!

If you were stranded on a deserted island who is the one person you would want with you and why? I think that Nelson Mandela is someone I would like to sit down and have a few beers with to understand what he has strived for and if he considers he has succeeded.

If you won the lottery what is the first thing you would buy? A house.

Favourite quote or motto in life? I CAN – C= courage, A = attitude, and N = Never give up.

Fleet & Industry News

Sugar season is back! The annual sugar cane crush is again underway, our purpose built fleet of dedicated B-Double side tippers will transport circa 500,000 tonnes of raw sugar from the regions sugar mill’s to the Port of Bundaberg over a 20 week period in support of the regions sugar Industry.

Central Queensland Operations Manager, Greg Black, will again take the reins for what is his seventh year at the helm of this demanding twenty four hour, seven day, 22 week annual operation, he describes the business as unlike any other across the K&S group as each year it is somewhat like Groundhog Day. Four weeks prior to each crushing seasons commencement in late June, he unlocks the Bundaberg depot for the first time since late November the previous year, sweeps out the cobwebs and forces the dormant hibernating carpet snakes and cane toads to move on. All so he can again commence the process of driver requirement, commissioning the workshop, repositioning his fleet and putting into place an operating structure that will ensure our customers’ requirements are met for the upcoming season. Greg also says the process gets easier each year, in particular the recruitment of drivers as without fail the nucleus of the previous year’s group saddle up again.

They are not your typical group, their age and experience might suggest that they are a bit like dad’s army but it is very clear that once the operation slips into top gear, it is the experience and many years of dealing with the volatility of a sugar crush that makes this team exactly what is required to be successful year on year.

Greg Black - Central Queensland Operations Manager

Corey French receives high commendation award for the Young Professional of the Year Award 2012Corey French, Manager - Project Services for Regal Transport WA, received the “Certificate of High Commendation” at last year’s Transport Industry awards just missing out on the “Young Professional of the Year Award 2012”.

Missing out in 2012 hasn’t deterred Giles Everest, Executive General Manager of Regal Transport to nominate Corey again this year in 2013. Corey will again be nominated for continued performance and his recent promotion in running his own division, Project Services.

We asked what winning the certificate in 2012 meant to Corey and Regal Transport. Corey explains, “I think having a Regal Transport employee formally recognised as a young professional for their performance in the transport industry, is great exposure for the Company. The Young Professional of the Year Award is a highly recognised award in the industry, which attracts plenty of attention from a number of parties including customers, competitors, regulatory and statutory bodies. Being involved in such an award is an appropriate representation of how Regal Transport is performing, setting up for the future and becoming an employer of choice. There are a number of young, hard working, enthusiastic employees at Regal Transport, all who have great futures in the transport industry ahead of them.”

Congratulations Corey for this achievement and we wish you all the best for this year’s nomination.

Around the Traps!

Bryan Walsh, Chief Financial Officer based in Mount Gambier, fills us in on what’s happening in the Finance and Accounting Department.

Over the 11 years that I have worked for K&S one of the most satisfying outcomes has been the development of a professional and skilled team of people in finance, accounting and IT across the company. In the early days we had a number of short comings and our people lacked the knowledge and experience. Fortunately over time and with the support of the Board & the then Managing Director, we were able to put together a strong team that I’m extremely proud of.

The finance and accounting department are primarily responsible for managing the financial risks of the Corporation by directing the activities of administration, financial compliance, payroll, debt collection, insurance and indirectly IT.

Ultimately the department is responsible for financial planning and reporting to the Board of Directors along with assisting in shaping the Company’s growth strategy through acquisitions and procurements.

The key highlights from the last 8 months include:> We successfully negotiated with Paul Sampey, the vendor of

Collare Transport, over many months to enable K&S to acquire his business.

> Integration of the Collare Transport acquisition within our Dardanup based business in Western Australia. Acquisition was completed on the 31st October 2012 and has and will continue to provide operational synergies, improved returns of the combined Dardanup and Collare businesses.

> Successful Stage 1 implementation of Sun Systems upgrade, which provides the platform to leverage from the new system being virtualised as part of APIP.

> The purchase of 14.6 hectares of land at Bullsbrook, Western Australia for the development of a new terminal for Regal Transport. The current rented site is too small and poorly laid out. We are currently working on plans for the development of the terminal which we expect will commence in 2014.

> The continued development of Panorama as the core transport application in K&S.

The key priorities and focus areas for the next 6 months include:> Produce the 2013 K&S Annual Report.> Complete the full year accounts.> Production of monthly Board papers.> Cost management involving broader issues like organisational

structure and scope.> Management of working capital.> Grow the profitability of the business through organic growth and

acquisition (to penetrate markets and for geographical expansion). We continually evaluate acquisition opportunities.

> Deliver improved EPS (Earnings per Share) and ROI (Return on Investments).

Other key highlights have been the acquisitions that we have negotiated and completed:

> Cochranes Transport 2003> DTM Logistics 2006 > Brookes Transport 2008> Pacific Transport 2010> Regal Transport 2010> Collare Transport 2012

For the above acquisitions that have been completed we have looked at many more that we have not been able to either reach agreement with or they simply did not meet our requirement or objectives. These acquisitions and the new account wins K&S has achieved has seen the business double in size over period.

In my role at K&S, I am genuinely pleased to be part of an organisation that has demonstrated its commitment to provide people with necessary information, knowledge and skills to perform their roles safely and competently, prior to their commencement of work with our induction and subsequent refresher training programs. While we maintain our strong safety focus our induction program also covers other key workplace information including conditions of employment, workplace behaviour standards and job specific requirements.Over the last few years we have progressed our varying levels of individual participation (induction and refresher training ) across our business to our mandatory completion system, that categorises defined working groups (e.g. Admin, Drivers, Forklift, Workshop, Managers, MD, etc) to ensure all people receive relevant job specific induction and ongoing training. As our programs have developed we have seen a significant increase and updating of safe operating procedures to assist people apply best practice techniques at work within our own operations and at our customer sites. Our HR team has been working closely with HS&E and IT departments, to transform our paper based program (saving a few trees as well, we hope!) to an e-learning environment that allows people to work through voice generated modules and complete the competency sections, at their own pace to achieve improved learning benefits. At the end of our induction program the e-learning modules are automatically transferred to our HR record management system, along with other relevant induction information. This stored information forms the basis of a number of processes including transferring roles, roll-out of new programs and the individual’s annual refresher program, to ensure our people are kept up to date, with the information needed to work in the safest way possible. Crucial to our success of our programs has been the feedback (positive and negative) and active participation of our people within the branches who support and assist in managing this important process, including our participants, managers and trainer assessors. Our future development includes the increase of interactive learning opportunities to compliment the computer based program. We hope that when you are involved in any of our training sessions, you can further appreciate the importance of your participation in developing your skills, in K&S’ commitment to a safe workplace for all people. In May 2013, the initial novated lease salary package presentations rolled out nationwide receiving a positive response from employees. Under recent proposed legislative changes, sgfleet has provided us with an overview of the changes and what it means for our employees.

Kaye Evans General Manager Human Resources

Salary Packaging a Motor Vehiclesgfleet recently held a number of novated lease education sessions for K&S Freighters at various locations across Australia.

A novated lease allows you to salary package your chosen car and running costs straight from your pay which can create significant savings, including:

> generous discounts on new vehicle purchases

> income tax and GST savings on a fully maintained lease as expenses are paid using pre-tax salary

> easy and convenient budgeting for all your running costs.

Any form of salary packaging attracts Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT). This is a tax that is paid in place of income tax for the portion of your salary that you are packaging.

You may have recently heard press coverage about the legislative changes proposed by the Federal Government that impact salary packaging a motor vehicle under a novated lease from 16th July 2013.

The statutory method for calculating FBT on a company provided vehicle, including novated leases, may be removed from legislation. This method of calculating FBT does not distinguish between business and private use.

If legislation is passed, FBT will be calculated using the operating cost (or log book) method only.

When using the operating cost method the percentage of business and private use of the car needs to be calculated. If your vehicle is for 100% private use, you can still obtain savings under a novated lease, as well as the convenience it offers.

Benefits of the operating cost method (in addition to above) include:

> lower taxable value for those who drive high business kilometres, allowing higher savings

> easy to use electronic log book to record business/private use

> 12 week log book period can be valid for 5 years.

It is important to note that for these changes to apply, legislation still has to be passed. The Federal Opposition has made a policy decision not to adopt these changes should they form government after the next election.

K&S Freighters has a temporary hold on novated lease quotes for employees until the outcome of the proposed change is known. If you have any questions/concerns or are interested in a novated lease, please contact your dedicated sgfleet representative, Ellen Powell ([email protected] or 0427 393 200) who will record your details and keep you up-to-date with information as it becomes available.

Alternatively, please visit www.sgfleet.com regularly for more information.

Let’s admit it, finding the motivation to exercise is tough but not for the Regal Rockets!

When Regal decided to get fit they added a hint of fun, a spoon full of motivation and a cup full of charity. HBF Run for A Reason took place on May 26th 2013 allowing 29,500 participants to attend. Starting in the City participants ran/walked over the freeway, through the Graham Farmer Tunnel finishing at Gloucester Park.

Lead by Myra Taylor and Lorraine Pinnell the recruiting for team members started. They were joined by Kate Liston, Kelly Hughes and Emma Larkins. The team confessed the name was a joint effort that made them sound fast even though they knew the truth! A few of the Regal Rockets had witnessed cancer firsthand so it seemed natural to donate to the Cancer Council.

With training underway balanced with a few glasses of wine race day came quick! The girls met with what felt like the entire population of Perth. As the siren went anxious legs crossed the start line with a slow shuffle, they gained momentum and maintained a fast paced walk for 12km. The Regal Rockets were off and racing!

Feeling the impact at 9km they used each other’s motivation to finish the 3kms and having the Cancer Council cheer them along was pretty special. After 2 hours, 17 minutes and $890 the Regal Rockets completed the event!

Apart from feeling great about raising money they certainly felt the pain of 12kms. This won’t deter them from hitting the pavement again; ‘Run for a Reason 2014’ is confirmed! Dig deep and get behind the team “no pain no gain right?”

L-R Kate Liston - QA Compliance / Administration Officer, Kelly Hughes – Systems Manager, Lorraine Pinnell and Myra Taylor – Human Resources Officer, Emma Larkins – Administration Officer.

A tribute to David Del Corso He had a smile for everyone. A man with a great heart. Empathy and kindness for all. Boundless enthusiasm. Crazy energetic theories and schemes ranging from power boats, fishing and cooking, through to

novel transport solutions. Some of which dare we say were not the most practically thought through ideas, but I guarantee that posed no reason to slow down or change tact. Dearly loved husband of Michelle, exceptionally proud father of Matthew and Alicia. Our DTM SA State Manager, adored by his employees & customers, they were all part of his extended family and he treated them as such.

It is with deep regret and sincere sadness that we lost David to his battle with pancreatic cancer (far too young), only 42 years old. He died peacefully early in the evening of Monday 6th May. The two weeks prior were exceptionally hard for David as his body progressively failed him, true to his nature through to the end he never gave up. I spoke with him only four days prior to his passing. Typically he was upbeat and confident; determined not to succumb. He laughed on the phone call, we talked of times we had shared. I think he knew his days were numbered, it was his way of saying good bye and letting us know not to worry, move on, don’t feel sorry, that was his character.

To assist his family we collected employee donations. David was a very well liked and respected person. Numerous company employees, management and drivers donated from their salary or wages or via cash deposits to a fund we established raising $18,704. What a great testament of the nature of our company employees.

We also held a trivia and auction night in Melbourne on 24th April 2013. My PA, Sandra Squadrito, did a marvellous job arranging the evening. Sandra and David had a great working relationship, the banter between the two of them kept me entertained for several years. The total of all donations from this evening was $7,999.

Whilst his suffering has ended for which we are all extremely thankful, we will deeply miss his unique character. Our thoughts are with his wife, children and family.
