Teach/Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. (Proverbs 22:6)

Now, let me try to remember… when a person be-

comes a “Child of God” through the Gift of Baptism,

what is it that we promise to do? Oh, yeah, it goes

something like this:

As you rejoice in the baptism of your child, you are

also entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her/

him among God's faithful people,

bring her/him to the word of God and the holy supper,

teach her/him the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the

Ten Commandments, place in her/his hands the Holy Scriptures, and nurture

her/him in faith and prayer, so that your child may

learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and

deed, care for others and the world God made, and

work for justice and peace.

Do you promise to help your child grow in the Chris-

tian faith and life?

Response: I/We do.

It is summer time, and for some people it is a time to

slow down a little, take a break or vacation and enjoy

the beauty and fellowship we are blessed with living

here in Hawaii. But for others, it is a time to begin

planning on our Fall programs. We can’t wait until

late August or September or everyone will already

have their calendars filled with school, work and

sports taking most of their priorities. These are all

worthy and important activities, but isn’t the nurturing

of our faith and heart just as important?

The truth is, as human beings, we shine best when we

are either learning or teaching; and sometimes there is

very little difference between the two! I truly enjoy

teaching, but one of the best parts about teaching is

studying the topic and preparing before the teaching

begins. I feel I end up learning much more than my

students. And when it comes to teaching Jesus’ amaz-

ing stories called, “Parables,” I can talk about the

Prodigal Son or the Good Shepherd one hundred times

and still find some new nugget of wisdom or joy!

But as a congregation, we have so many reasons to

teach our children and adults in:

The ways of following Jesus

Applying our faith to

Work and Vocation

School

Play

Transitions, ie., birth, graduation, marriage,

retirement, death, etc.

The Arts

Social issues and our Christian response

Relationships and life journeys

The Environment Stewardship and how we need to think

about the Gifts of God

Parenting on all levels

Thousands of others!

It is clear that we need to continue to learn of our

Christian Faith and our identity as Children of God all

through our lives. It is a concerted effort to constantly

challenge ourselves in asking, “How is our Church rel-

evant in the world in which we live?” Or, “How can I,

as a baptized person of faith, one who is “walking in

the discipline of Jesus,” be able to contribute to, or

make known, the Good News of forgiveness, mercy,

grace, justice, stewardship and love of God in such a

crazy world?”

We have to take these questions seriously, talk about

them, explore their meanings and ramifications to our

church as well as our world and then apply them as a

People of Faith. We have an inspired Adult Forum

group and a Sunday School that needs both learners as

well as teachers. We also need to consider opportuni-

ties to learn about issues that are related to our faith

and our relationship to all our neighbors around the

world. Let’s give our brains a work out and make time

to teach and learn this year!

See you at Church,

Pastor Tim

NOTES FROM TOM

Like some of you, I’m an occasional insomni-

ac. Every now and then I’ll experience sleep-

less nights. They aren’t frequent enough to

cause worry or concern. But there are frequent

enough for me to think of them as “unwanted

work opportunities!”

Last night was one of those opportunities. I

awake at 2:30 AM. While I was repressing the

urge to get up, or to turn on the light and read,

I thought of my paternal grandmother and a

remarkable dream.

The dream occurred while she was going

through a difficult time in her life. In her

dream she felt her life was in danger. She felt

something encircling her waist and pulling

her. She looked and there was Jesus. It was his

shepherd’s crook which was protecting her

and pulling her to him.

In her waking moments Grandmother was

struggling with the realities of the human con-

dition, her own and her husbands. In her sleep

she recognized and experienced the presence

of God.

At 2:30 this morning, as I was trying my best

to sleep, I thought of grandmother and her

witness to the reality that God comes to us.

Sometimes it is in the middle of the day,

sometimes it is in the middle of the night.

The ancient Irish poem dating from the eighth

century states it this way:

Page 3

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that thou

art.

Thou my best thought, by day or by

night,

Waking or sleeping, thy presence my

light.

Keep singing, even in your dreams!

See you in worship—

Aloha Calvary by the Sea ‘Ohana!

My name is Jennifer Hawkins, the new Director and

Primary Head Teacher for the Montessori program. I

am pleased to be writing my very first Calvary Calls

article on behalf of our program. I would like to begin

sharing a brief introduction about myself.

I first discovered Montessori in 2003 while completing

my final year of a Bachelors program in Exercise Sci-

ence. After taking a step back from collegiate swim-

ming and cycling, my passion for a career in the fitness

industry was waning. A dear friend of mine suggested

Montessori teaching, both of which I would have never

considered without this recommendation. After gradu-

ating, I was fortunate to begin working as an assistant

at a Montessori school. I had such a profound experi-

ence that I was motivated to become trained as a Mon-

tessori teacher. In 2006, I graduated from the Montes-

sori Institute Northwest in Portland, Oregon with an

AMI Primary credential and went on to receive a Mas-

ters in Montessori Education through Loyola Universi-

ty in Baltimore, Maryland. Since graduation, I have

had the opportunity to experience a variety of schools

from small family-run centers to working within a large

school district teaching in public Montessori during

which time I completed a program to become state li-

censed to teach in public schools. Ever since a family

vacation to Hawaii as a child, I dreamed of the day I

would be able to come back and make my stay more

permanent. I am very fortunate to be joining an excel-

lent program with a dedicated staff and beautiful school

environment.

Our school community and the Toddler classroom

would like to extend our gratitude to Jewel Tuitele and

Cheryl Dunham who donated and completed the tod-

dler yard project on behalf of their daughter Skyler.

The project included installing synthetic grass, sod, an

irrigation system, stones, and new plants. The children

are very much enjoying their new outdoor area. This

summer the Toddler class has welcomed some new

members to its community for the summer program.

The children are settling very nicely into their environ-

ment and new routine.

The Primary classroom has explored three different

themes for each session: gardening, oceans, and art.

The children prepared garden beds, planted new vege-

tables, and have day by day been watching them grow.

They each planted their very own seed to take home as

well. During our ocean theme Pastor Tim provided pic-

tures from the underwater view directly out in front of

the chapel. New vocabulary cards, books, and art trays

of different types of fish and sea life were available for

children to learn and explore. During the art session

children will be presented lessons on how to draw vari-

ous objects, learn about artists, and do various projects

and crafts. Every Friday the children participated in

water play including some fun at the beach. July 5th

will be the last day of summer before everyone returns

in August. The school would like to wish everyone a

wonderful summer.

News from Jim & Carolyn Brown:

After years of planning and months of construction,

in July the Intensive Care Unit and a new Recovery

Room at Mbingo will open. These units will greatly

expand the scope and quality of care we provide.

Construction has also begun on a new outpatient

surgery clinic. Our current clinic has only two exam

tables separated by a curtain, and is completely inad-

equate for the size and complexity of our patient

load. The new clinic will have six exam rooms with

walls and doors, an indoor reception desk and wait-

ing room, two outpatient operating rooms, changing

rooms, and toilets.

In May we traveled to Kenya, where the 1st and

2nd year residents from all the PAACS programs

met for a Basic Science and Surgical Skills course.

This course is foundational to their education and is

an intense 11 days of basic science and trauma lec-

tures, surgical skills labs, and workshops in Ortho-

pedics, ENT, Wound Care, Pathology, and much

more. It’s also a time for residents to meet each oth-

er and the faculty of other PAACS programs, as well

as members of the PAACS Commission. Pictured in

the bottom right photo are Jim, Steve, and our 3 resi-

dents who attended.

In July we’ll graduate three residents- Dr. Jerry

Brown who will return to Liberia, Dr. DeGaulle Mi-

fila who will return to Dem. Rep. of Congo, and Dr.

Gerald Ekwen who will work in a hospital near his

home in Cameroon. Drs. Mifila and Ekwen began

with us at Ngaoundéré as 1st year Residents, so we

are especially pleased to be at Mbingo to see their

training come to completion.

Page 5

Three new residents will begin the 5 year surgical

program in August- Dr. Juana Kabba from Sierra

Leone, Dr. Samy Nigo from eastern Dem. Rep. of

Congo, and Dr. Titus Ebogo from Cameroon. The

spectrum of African nations who have residents in

PAACS programs represents our goal to be truly pan

-African.

We would especially appreciate your prayers for our

Residents as they study for and take these exams.

The next several months will include lots of studying

and preparing plus all the activities around the grad-

uation, in addition to the usual daily workload and

emergencies.
