Friends in Christ,
As I write this article, Labor Day is fast approaching.
We honor and celebrate the fruits of our work and
consider the dignity of work itself. Martin Luther
once said that if he were not a pastor, he would be a
shoe cobbler. It is just as noble and honorable a call-
ing as being a pastor.
Recently, a colleague of mine told me that he had
been a parish pastor in a long-established church in
the Detroit area a few years back (he wouldn’t want
me to tell you how many years ago!). In the church
historical records he found stories of how in the Great
Depression of the 1930s the parish had hired shoe
cobblers – six of them – to work in the church base-
ment. The parish called them to repair the shoes of
the “hobos,” the men who were without work and
walking from town to town in search of employment.
The men didn’t own cars, there were no phones or
internet job searches at their fingertips. All they had
were their feet and the shoes on them.
It was critical for these men that their shoes stay in-
tact. Broken shoes or shoes with worn out soles
meant no possibility of work, no money and the dire
consequences resulting from that situation. As far as
this Detroit parish was concerned, the shoe cobblers
were fulfilling a divine calling – a vocation – by re-
pairing the shoes of those whose lives depended upon
their ability to walk about.
This story gave me a whole new appreciation for Lu-
ther’s remarks about work and calling. Whatever
God calls us to, whether it be a pastor, a shoe cobbler,
or anything else, even if it seems boring, mundane or
meaningless (and what job doesn’t seem that way on
many days), if it is honorable work that helps in any
little way those in need, God dignifies it with divine
blessing. Luther called it the doctrine of the divine
vocation. I call it a holy calling, especially on the
most difficult of days.
Thanks be to God for the dignity of work. Enjoy your
Labor Day weekend.

Pastor Keith’s last Sunday will be September 23, 2012. -Editor
NOTES FROM TOM
During the summer months we church musicians are
inundated with materials designed to get us to pur-
chase music, particularly Christmas and Easter music.
Sometimes the packaging is very slick with a lot of
color and shiny pages. Other times the packaging is
minimalist and on cheap brown paper.
As you can probably imagine most of the music is
“copy cat” or formula music based on the money-
making pieces from last year. I don’t mean to sound
too cynical, but the bottom line for the church music
industry is not service. It is profit. Occasionally, how-
ever, one does uncover a little gem, a nicely crafted
composition.
I’ve been thinking about these “little gems.” And I
found myself quickly moving from thinking of the
“musical” gems to the “human” gems of Calvary by
the Sea. For at Calvary by the Sea the real gems are
you, the congregation, and my “loving but strong-
willed choir.”
Sunday after Sunday all of you—congregation and
choirs, faithfully assemble for worship beside the sea.
Whether or not life has made much or any sense in
the past week you are there. And you greet each other
with aloha and joy, with authentic delight and grace
that comes from knowing that all of us are beloved
children of God. And you assemble knowing that
grace is sufficient for each one of us and for all of us
together.
This Sunday, during the “Sharing of Aloha” (also
known as the Passing of the Peace), keep an ear open
to the sounds about you, because it is the sound of
grace in action, the sound of delight and joy abound-
ing, the sound of hospitality and welcome—it is the
sounds of the human gems of Calvary by the Sea.
In thinking about that wonderful sound, I also think
about the sound of all us singing our Gathering Song,
“All Is Ready.”
Come, all you weary ones, who walk the journey;
Know you are welcome at the table of the Lord.
Come, bring your burdens here, find love and mercy.
With Christ before us, we gather as his friends!
All is ready, here and now: all are welcome here!
Come, all you struggle hard, all who are hopeful;
Know you are welcome at the table of the Lord.
Come, with your tired hearts, come, find new passion.
With Christ within us we find new life again!
All is ready, here and now; all are welcome here!
Come, all you rich and poor, all who are challenged;
Know you are welcome at the table of the Lord.
Come, all who live in shame, we are your family.
With Christ beside us, we no longer are alone!
All is ready, here and now; all are welcome here!
Come, all you single ones, all who are married;
Know you are welcome at the table of the Lord.
Come, you who’ve lost your spouse, all who are lonely.
With Christ our brother, we are loved and made whole!
All is ready, here and now; all are welcome here!
Come, all you young and old, all male and female,
Know you are welcome at the table of the Lord.
Come, love of every kind, it does not matter.
With Christ, all people are one in God’s name!
All is ready, here and now, all are welcome here!
Come, all you anxious ones, who fear the future;
Know you welcome at the table of the Lord.
Come, all from east and west, we stand together.
With Christ we rise now, to sing the reign of God!
All is ready, here and now; all are welcome here!

Let me begin by saying on behalf of the staff of
Calvary by the Sea Montessori School, Mahalo for
the warm welcome we received when being in-
stalled a couple of weeks ago. We felt your love
for us, the school, and more importantly the love of
Christ.
After a great summer session followed by a few
weeks for the children to spend time at home and
staff to rest up and prepare for this school year, we
are back in full swing. Preparing for the coming
year is hard work, but well worth it. Painting,
washing, organizing, shopping and making sure the
classrooms and outside environments are clean,
safe and inviting for the children. There is a very
good peaceful feeling when in the classrooms or on
the playground and gardens. All ten staff at Calva-
ry spend our days doing our best to make sure this
continues to happen.
We have some new families that have joined our
‘Ohana this year. Most families are returning from
last year, and we have some alumni families who
have now returned to our school with their younger
children.
We very much appreciate the gift of being one of
your missions. Many children are touched as they
learn about Christ, learn how to care for others, and
learn what is right and wrong. We realize the im-
portance of these young Keiki, as this is their first
Page 4
experience with school, and for most, this is their
first experience spending time away from family.
We know that our example has a strong impact on
what these children can become. We work hard, go
home tired and try our best to come in each day re-
freshed and ready for a new day, never quite know-
ing what will come next from these beautiful chil-
dren. We are constantly learning from them.
Thank you for supporting us. We are very grateful!

PERFORMING ARTS CALVARY BEGINS
on 7 SEPTEMBER
Performing Arts Calvary, an outreach of Calvary
by the Sea Lutheran Church, begins Fall Classes
on Friday, 7 September. PAC meets from 4:30 to
6 pm in Hale Aloha, and is open to all children
ages six and above. There is no fee for PAC, and
no prior experience is required.
The purpose of PAC is to teach children about the
love God through the performing arts of singing,
dancing, and acting. Under the professional lead-
ership of Julie Okumura, and her dedicated assis-
tants, the PAC program is broken up into two se-
mesters, Fall and Spring. The children learn and
perform a different musical each semester. They
are taught performing arts skills (singing, dancing
and acting) in a loving and safe environment.
In addition to presenting Christmas and Spring
musicals, PAC also takes part in worship services
and events at Calvary. PAC is both an outreach
and extension of the ministry of music and was
founded by Dr. Arthur Harvey and Lisa Kimsey.
