on taste and requirements for the intended application.

In this way, the initial design that is provided for open access is utilised carefully by the user. Improvements and results can be re-posted based on how the design fared in use, and any improvements or specialty develop-ments can be utilised or further developed by others.

In open design, the user takes on a very involved and critical role. Through the process, the users and developers essentially become their own, self motivated and realised designer. In this way, open design harnesses the ability of everyone to contribute creatively.

Open design as a concept, and where it can be applied is continually changing and evolving. The fact that it harnesses the ideas and abilities of many different people, allows its application to span all sorts of disciplines. It pushes the envelope as to what can be achieved and how far designs and concepts can develop.

The key of open design is to never stop looking for where it can work. There are many benefits to the model of thought, capable of being adopted to suit all kinds of different things .

There is no single way that open design works, but there are certainly a great deal of fields where the application can assist in some way. It is crucial to understand that open application can be moulded and shaped to fit. Open design is capable of pushing the limits of how things are done.

It is not always about the final and finished design or product. Because of the way open design works, it pushes the way that things ahve been done traditionally. Development of process is as important as the final outcome, and certainly is also just as capable of making a change for good.

Open design is an exciting field to experiment with. It may not be the answer or the solution to every problem, but you can not argue that it is the right step forward in bringing people together and working toward a common set of goals.

You don’t have to be open in everything you do

(UN)LIMITED

DESIGN

Page 81: SHARE THIS BOOK: An Introduction to Open Design

81

(Un)Limited Design is a part of Premsela, an initiative created by the Netherlands Institute for Design and Fashion.

Through Premsela, (Un)Limited Design seeks to investigate and demonstrate possibilities presented by open design. this is done so by allowing everyone the opportunity to share creativity through the open source model.

Through seminars, workshops, publications, contests, and festivals, Premsela develop an understanding of the concepts of open design, leading by example.

The first (Un)limited Design Contest was intended as an experiment in open design. Entrants submitted product designs on the condition that they shared their digital blueprints so others could modify and improve their designs or manufacture them using Fab Labs. Creative Commons licences allowed entrants to share their designs without relinquishing copyright. The contest elicited innovative and inspiring designs, some of which have been exhibited several times.

INSTRUCTABLES

85

INSTRUCTABLES

Instructables is a website specializing in user-created and uploaded do-it-yourself projects, which other users can comment on and rate for quality.

It was created by Eric Wilhelm and Saul Griffith and launched in August 2005.

Instructables is dedicated to step-by-step collaboration among members to build a variety of projects. Users post instructions to their projects, usually accompanied by visual aids, and then interact through comment sections below each Instructable step as well in topic forums.

Designs are openly accessible for alteration and comment, allowing users to build, develop, improve and share their own designs.
