Have you ever been watching baseball and had a verse

of Scripture reinforced as true? … Oh…. Well I don’t

think I'm the one who’s weird…. It involves two incidents

I saw last week. The first happened in a major league

game. The Braves’ young phenom Ronald Acuña was just

shredding Marlins pitching in their four-game series,

leading off each of the first three games with a home run

(including both games of a double-header). On the first

pitch of the fourth game of the series, the Marlins pitcher

hit Acuña with a 97mph fastball on the elbow. Now we

don’t know the man’s heart, and he claims he didn’t do it

on purpose, but let’s just say the circumstances are pretty

suspicious. And there was no attempt by him to apologize

to Acuña on the field, or even to ask if he was ok.

A couple of days later I was watching the Little

League World Series. A pitcher hit a batter in a situation

where it was obvious that it was unintentional. And the

first thing the pitcher did? He walked over and apologized

and checked to see how the batter was doing.

It reminded me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:3:

“Unless you change and become like little children, you

will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” What is it about

us that changes in our hearts between our “little league”

years and adulthood? If you watch the games from

Williamsport, you’ll often see the fielders for one team

high five the guy who just homered against them as he’s

circling the bases. In the big leagues, you get thrown at for

daring to be good at what you do. Despite the occasional

tears when they lose, it seems like the kids are much more

mature than their adult cohorts.

It’s not much different spiritually. As kids we have a

deep trust of God, and it seems that we lose much of that

trust in our teens and twenties. But Jesus said that the

innocent nature of a child’s faith is something that we

adults need to adopt.

To be sure, children aren’t perfect when it comes to

spiritual things. Anyone who’s had a two-year-old or has

broken up fights in the back seat of the car on a long road

trip knows that. But their simple trust in God to take care

of their needs, and their ability to apologize, forgive, and

move on are things that each of us needs to adopt.

At the end of the Little League Classic game, played

by big leaguers at the Williamsport minor league team’s

stadium, the Mets and Phillies lined up and shook hands (Continued in column 2)

It is hard to believe that summer is over and

school has started for everyone. We had a great time at

summer camp year and we sent 14 kids to Camp Rudolph

this summer. At camp this summer they all learned about

erasing fear and the key verse was 2 Timothy 1:7, “For

God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, love,

and self-control.” The middle schoolers went more in

depth on what fearlessness, power, love, and self-control

actually mean and what they are while the second to third

graders learned about Moses and how God turned his fear

into something amazing. The fourth and fifth graders had

a fear factor week and learned about some people in the

Bible who God helped overcome their fear and do some

amazing things. I think that this message is important to

people of any age. I know, even as an adult now, I still

fear things that I should not. This message also reminded

us of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

In August we had our back to school swimming

parties at the Archer’s house. Thank you to Bob and

Sherry for opening your home and pool to us every year.

Now that school has started, our normal youth group with

third to twelfth grade will be starting back up September

16th, the week after the Sunday School picnic, this will be

our Kick-Off Sunday with games, music, food, and

coming back into some more learning in a large group and

a small group format. I cannot wait to kick back into our

school year, good luck to all the students out there!

just like the little leaguers who were watching them with

awe. Maybe they’ve rubbed off on them a little. Hopefully

the faith of the children in our lives will rub off on us as

well.

The Importance of Attitude

Philippians 2:14-15

Florida resident Latreasa Goodman called 911 three

times in one day. The emergency? McDonald's was out of

Chicken McNuggets. She had paid for them, but McDonald's

wanted to switch them for a McDouble, and Ms. Goodman

appealed to 911, saying, "This is an emergency. If I would

have known they didn't have McNuggets, I wouldn't have

given my money, and now she wants to give me a McDouble,

but I don't want one." She was cited for misusing the 911

system.

It's frustrating when a fast-food place doesn't get your

order right, but it's not really an emergency, is it? The truth is,

many of the things that upset us aren't really worth it. We tend

to take little events and blow them up into big things --

especially in relationships. In the movie Ruthless People,

Danny DeVito wants to kill his wife because "I hate the way

she licks stamps."

In Colossians, Paul gives some very simple and

straightforward advice. "Put up with each other."

(Colossians 3:13 CEV) The King James Version uses the

word 'forbear,' but the CEV captures the real meaning of the

Greek. An important part of living the Christian life is learning

to put up with annoying situations and the annoying habits

of some people, responding instead with a spirit of love and

patience. When events irritate you, strive not to overreact.

Paul said, "Do everything without grumbling or

arguing. Then you will be the pure and innocent children of

God." (Philippians 2:14-15) Paul is talking about our

attitude.

Clement Stone said: "There is a little difference in

people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The

little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is

positive or negative."

Charles Swindoll said: "The longer I live, the more I

realize the impact of attitude in life. Attitude is more important

than facts. It is more important than the past, than education,

than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes,

than what other people think or say or do. It will make or

break a company...a church...a home."

He continues: "The remarkable thing is we have a

choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for

that day. We cannot change the past...we cannot change the

inevitable. The only thing we do is play on the one thing we

have, and that is our attitude...We are in charge of our

attitudes."

I want my ministry to be defined by a good attitude. I

want to look back at my performance and see that I attacked

every job with enthusiasm and commitment. Holiness—which

we long for, which we need, and which God wants from us—

begins with an attitude.

Do everything without complaining and arguing so

that you may become blameless and pure.

See YOU in Bible School!

In Christ,

Johnny Parks

By Debbie McCollister

I’ve been spring cleaning this month. I know it’s not

spring, but it all started when I came across the verse

“By knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious

and pleasant riches.” (Proverbs 24:4 NKJV ) Looking

around at my house, I knew not everything in the stuffed

closets was precious or pleasant. So I rolled up my

sleeves and dove in.

Some things were obviously not in the precious and

pleasant category. Broken, torn, no longer fits. But what

about the rest? I still had too much. God also said

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow

will worry about its own things.” (Matthew 6:34 NKJV )

Out went the unused, things just taking up space for

“just in case”. I was storing things in a way that

suggested He couldn’t take care of me as well as I could

on my own. It felt good to get that extra space for things

that might bring joy today.

I looked around for a way to make more space.

Lamentations 3:22-23 says “Through the LORD’s

mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions

fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your

faithfulness.” I realized a lot of my belongings came

with the burden of history. Things that brought back bad

memories to me every time I looked at them – something

that had happened, or a dream lost. I didn’t need to keep

things that reminded me of yesterday’s evil, when God

wants me to live for today, so out they went.

I was left with a pared down house, with room to enjoy

today rather than lament the past or worry about the

future. And now I am free to live with a little more calm

in my life. You too can go through a late spring

cleaning. But if you don’t have the time, try reading Max

Lucado’s book Trade Your Cares for Calm. It’s a quick

simple read, and just may help with your emotional

clutter.
