GuideA: People wanted to become scholar-officials for many reasons. One reason was that scholar-officials were considered elite members of society. As elite members they were allowed to perform many important jobs in the government. Also people admired them for their knowledge and ethics. Additionally, they were subject to reduced penalties for breaking the law. Lastly, many scholar-officials became wealthy as a result of expensive gifts given to them from people seeking their aid. These are the reasons why people would want to become scholar-officials.
