Leadership is the transformation of expertise and vision into actions that are judged effective by the led (Cowan & Heywood, 2001)

Academic leadership as ‘… a practical and everyday process of supporting, managing, developing and inspiring academic colleagues...’ (Ramsden, 1998:4)

Academic leadership is the act of building a community of scholars to set direction and achieve common purpose through the empowerment of faculty and staff (Gmelch & Wolverton, 2002)

Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT)


• Established in January 2008• An organization under the Ministry of

Education, Malaysia• Is in line with the launching of National Higher

Education Strategic Plan (NHESP) - to transform higher education in Malaysia, especially in the area of human capital development.

AKEPT’s Vision

To be acknowledged as the global benchmark and referral centre for Higher

Education Leadership, Learning and Teaching and Research and Innovation.


AKEPT’s Missions1) To align with the Ministry’s transformational agenda

for higher education to ensure that higher education institutions are globally competitive.

2) To be recognized as the premier referral centre for research and innovation, teaching and learning, and leadership competencies for higher education.

3) To facilitate Higher Education Institutions in making Ministry’s transformation agenda a success.


AKEPT’s Objectives1) To strengthen the governance and organization of higher

education institutions through the provision of training, advisory, and coaching programs designed for senior and middle management to develop effective and strategic leadership talent.

2) To generate a culture of creative and innovative solutions to the critical issues on leadership in higher education through effective research.

3) To provide innovation in crafting learning and teaching strategies to improve the quality of learning among students.

4) To brand AKEPT through regional and international leadership institutions


1) To pursue the Leadership Critical Agenda in achieving the desired goal of NHESP.

2) To provide relevant and pragmatic training programs, advice and facilitation to higher education institutions.
