Shanghai 2010World Expo

The chips are down in Beijing and the dieis cast in Shanghai!

The sleeping beauty is giving herself amakeover, spending without counting, modernizing to the extreme while stillrestoring her past, all for the World Expowhich opens its doors in May 2010."Better city, better life" chant the billboardsfor the Expo that will take place on the twobanks of the Huangpu, upriver from thecity center. The Expo already has a fewfigures: 70 million visitors expected duringthe 6 months of the event, a surface areaof 5.28 km2, 186 countries and 47international organizations havingannounced their participation in this eventthat will take place for the first time in adeveloping country, thus opening a newchapter in the history of world expos thatgoes back to 1851. In all, it will be atechnological exhibition, a trade fair, a finearts salon and an open-air architecturecompetition of which certain projects willremain permanently, like the FrancePavilion conceived by the architectJacques Ferrier, and the Ren building, with its very futuristic architecturerepresenting the Chinese sign "ren" whichmeans "Man". For Shanghai, which isreclaiming its position as a financial centerin the Asian Pacific zone, this is an eventcommensurate with Chinese growth. With close to 20 million inhabitants,Shanghai is the biggest city in China, andof course it did not wait for the expo toenter the 21st century. If the city, becauseof a past linked to foreign occupation anda reputation for corruption, betting, opium

and prostitution, had been sent to thecorner by Mao, since the 1990s, andthanks to Deng Xiaoping's decision topromote the city's development, it hasre-arisen. You just have to come from the airport onboard the Maglev to realize how much: 7minutes at 430km/hour to reach the citycenter! But why not start your tour of the city earlyin the morning in Fuxing Park? Here youdiscover the city through its unchangingaspect. An oasis of oxygen designed bythe French, those who live nearby come tolearn the two-step, the waltz, tango orrockabilly, listen to the birds' songs, talkpolitics, play cards or mah-jongg, or slowlymove their bodies in the art of Tai chi. It isjust a stone's throw from the park to theXintiandi neighborhood, the old Frenchconcession. 1843 marked the start of theforeign concessions. Americans, English,French, Russians and Japanesecohabited or succeeded one another inShanghai. This period of occupationprofoundly influenced the city's culturalidentity by contributing in the 1920s and1930s to the boom in the arts, cinema, theatre, and the birth of the first Chinesejazz band. After breakfast at the bakery "Paul", whichseduces its Chinese customers with itsFrench croissants, direction People'sSquare, where the futuristic architecture ofthe Opera, the Grand Theatre, theNational Museum and the Hayatt Hotelrubs shoulders with the 19th century ParkHotel and Museum of Modern Art. Fromboth sides of the square emerges themost animated street in the city: thefamous, chic and partly pedestrian NanjingRoad. To the east of Nanjing you find theBund, the famous Boulevard that bordersthe Huangpu River. The former businesscenter for foreign companies, the Bund islined with sumptuous buildings in

European style: banks, hotels and colonialcompanies from the 1930s that todayhouse international ritz, restaurants withpanoramic views or very trendy bars likeBar Rouge at N°18. Across from it is thenew business neighborhood of Pudongwhere architectural excess knows no limit:492m for the Shanghai World FinancialCenter, 468m for the Oriental Pearltelevision tower, 421m for the Jin Maotower? the roofs of the world inarchitectural terms! To connect the twobanks of the river, a glass wagon slidesthrough a sound and light tunnel, verykitsch? But Shanghai also has its BuddhistTemples, especially lively on weekends, the Moganshan Lu with its lofts and artists'galleries, Nanshi, the old Chinese citypartly rebuilt, the antiques market inDongtai Lu, a few watersideneighborhoods on its outskirts, likeZhujiajiao? there seems to be no end towhat you will come across. Coming to theWorld Expo also means coming todiscover this unique and fascinating city.
