Message from our Rabbi This essay is based on a sermon I delivered on Rosh Hashanah, 2010.

Let me ask you a question: If you are married, knowing what you know now, if you could turn back the clock and choose all over again, would you marry your spouse?

I would like to wish Mazel Tov on a very special wedding anniversary – to Adam and Eve, whose wedding took place on Rosh Hashanah over 5,000 years ago. When we say in our prayers, “HaYom Harat Olam - today is the birthday of the world,” we mean Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the sixth day of creation – the day on which Adam and Eve were married.

(And you know that Adam and Eve had the perfect marriage because Adam didn’t have to hear about all the men Eve could have married, and Eve didn’t have to hear about how Adam’s mother made the perfect brisket!)

So much of how we perceive the world depends on our expectations. Especially in marriage. So whether your marriage is new, or over 5000 years old – it is crucial to have realistic expectations about what married life is like.

Recently, the Orthodox Union or OU, published a study titled the Marital Satisfaction Survey. It studied the state of marriage among thousands of orthodox Jewish couples across North America. The good news is that, relatively speaking, we are doing pretty well. 74% of us answered yes to that question at the beginning – we would choose our spouse again. And about the same number report their marriage as excellent or very good. This is a much higher percentage than in the wider society.

But there is a curve. In the first few years of marriage, the percentage who report their marriage is excellent, is over 80%, then the numbers go down – not that much, only to about 65%, but they do go down, until 30 years of marriage. After 30 years, the numbers go up, even higher than at the beginning of the marriage.

The reason for that downward curve is obvious, and is backed up by data – the middle years are the years of the greatest stress.

These are the years children create the most stress. Children are the greatest blessing and joy in life, without question. Notwithstanding that, someone once visited the Children’s Museum in New York and said, “It’s a nice place, but what it really needs is a bar!” Children create stress. And the older they get, the more stress they create.

Also, these are the years that financial expenses are the highest and most stressful. And these are the years with the heaviest demands on our time. Rabbi Yisroel Salanter wisely said, “Life is a short tablecloth. When you pull in one direction, you are short at another.”

But here is the good news. If you are in those middle years and you are not satisfied with your marriage –know at least that this is normal, and that things will get better, much better, if you just hang in there. And while you are hanging in there, you can get help that will make it much better.

But there is one key to making your marriage (and any other close relationship) better that is available to all of us. And this is a lesson from another event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah. Because this day of Rosh Hashanah is also the day on which Adam and Eve were created. And there is a discrepancy in the way the Torah describes their creation. In one verse, the Torah says, “Zochor U’Nekeiva Bara Otom –God created Adam and Eve at the same time.” But in a later verse the Torah says, “Lo Tov Heyot HaAdam Levado – it is not good for Adam to be alone.” And God says, “I will make from his body, a mate opposite him.”

Message from our Rabbi (Continued) So which is it? Were Adam and Eve created at the same time? Or was Adam created first and then Eve?

There are a number of answers. But the Talmud gives a rather peculiar answer. God originally made one being, one side was male and the other side was female, facing away from each other. Then God performed an operation, splitting this dual being down the middle, creating a back for each of them, making them into two separate people. And with that bizarre operation, God teaches the fundamental lesson about marriage. For a husband and wife to be close and loving and happy, they must be facing each other. They must be able to turn towards each other – both physically and emotionally.

Here are just a few consequences of this that I have learned the hard way over the years. The first lesson is you are not speaking with or being with your spouse if you are holding an iPhone. Because the key to speaking with, and being with your spouse is being fully present. Numerous studies show that the amount of time a couple spends with each other is not related to how happy their marriage is. You might think that it would be related, but it’s not. Much more important to the happiness of a marriage is how present they are for each other when they are together, how undivided their attention is for each other, regardless of howlong or short that time is.

The same applies to the other stresses in marriage. The data shows that the stress of financial pressures in marriage relates not to how much or how little you have, but to what extent you are able, as a couple, to turn towards each other in confronting the problem. And the same is true with children, and everything else.One last lesson I have learned the hard way. If we are truly turned toward each other, we don’t focus so much on what we say, as on how our words are heard – and there is very often a big gap between the two.

Rabbi David Wolpe tells a story about his daughter, who was three years old. One day he was making her waffles. When the toaster oven rang, he said to her, “Oh, your waffles are ready.” She said to her father, “Why did you say oy?” He said to her, “I didn’t say oy. I said oh.” She said, “No you didn’t. You said oy.” He said, “Okay. I said oy.” His daughter’s eyes lit up with triumph and she said, “Aha! You misunderstood yourself!”

We don’t hear ourselves the way others hear us. We may insist – I did not raise my voice, I was not yelling, I am not upset. We may be telling the truth or not. But that is irrelevant to how our words are heard. And ultimately, if we are trying to turn towards each other, more important than how I meant to say the words is how those words are heard. As you may have seen posted on Facebook, “10% of conflicts are due to difference in opinion. 90% are due to wrong tone of voice.” When we find ourselves in a crisis, the natural tendency is to turn away, turn in. We do that because we are embarrassed, because we feel guilty or angry or because we feel too exhausted to engage someone else – stress drains our energy.

But what we need to learn is to push ourselves to turn toward our spouse, to listen without distraction, to ask: What are you feeling? What are you afraid of? How can we reorder our priorities? How can we get through this together? Because when we push ourselves to do that, we reap the benefit that being married can bring to our life.

So that’s what God did on Rosh Hashanah, all those years ago, the sixth day of creation. First He created one being – male and female - where Adam and Eve could not face each other. In order to show us that could not work and that will never work. Don’t ever think that is an option. “Lo Tov – that is not good,” the Torah tells us. Then he splits this being so that Adam and Eve are now mates – opposite, who have the ability to turn towards each other. Then, and only then, did God bring Adam and Eve into marriage.

We should be very proud, as orthodox Jews, of the state of our marriages. But we have a lot of room for improvement. And the events of Rosh Hashanah provide the key.

All over the world, thousands of Jews each day study the same page of Talmud, thus connecting them in their pursuit of Torah knowledge. This is a great opportunity to delve into the heart of Jewish learning, and get your day started with intellectual and spiritual vigor. Message from our Cantor“The name is Bond. James Bond.”

In 1962, United Artists released the movie Dr. No, the first of the 23 - soon to be 24 - 007movies, the adventures of the indestructible James Bond. One of the main charactersin the series is "M", the head of MI6, the British secret service. Who is this "M"? What is hisreal name? Nobody knows; or knew. The first crack into the secrets of "M" came withthe sixth 007 film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Bond visits "M" in his house, and findshim dealing with his collection of butterflies (Bond: “unusually small for Nymphalis polychloros…”). So now weknow "M" has a country estate, and lepidoptery is his hobby. In Casino Royal, in 2006, we learn more about "M".A woman now, played by Dame Judi Dench - comes home to find Bond waiting for her. "I thought that “M” wasa randomly assigned letter. I had no idea it stood for…" says Bond, only to be abruptly interrupted by the lady:"Utter one more syllable and I will have you killed!” So… Bond knows her real name… and soon we learn that sheis married and that she has children: "If I want sarcasm, Mr. Tanner, I’ll talk to my children, thank you very much",she says in Golden Eye, released in 1996. The real breakthrough comes in the 2012 Skyfall. At the beginning ofthis movie we become acquainted with Gareth Mallory, Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee.By the end of the movie, following the death of Lady "M", Mallory is appointed as the new head of the MI6.Finally, after 53 years, the boss has a name. His name is Gareth Mallory. "M".

In a way, the history of "M" is the story of our relationship with our religion, and with our God. In Deuteronomy 1813 the Torah says: " '-" - the Artscroll Chumash translates it as “You shall be wholehearted withHashem your God”. Rashi explains: “Walk with Him with wholeheartedness… do not delve into the future…accept with wholeheartedness, and then you will be with Him and of His portion”. But there’s much more to it,than “Wholehearted”. , Tamim, means in Hebrew also “naive”. We are expected to believe in God, in HisTorah, and follow his Mitzvot without hesitation and without questioning them, even if we do understand. Ofcourse, we are encouraged to learn, try to understand, and ask questions. But by the end of the day, if there’ssomething we do not comprehend, we must return to home base: “You shall be naïve with Hashem your God”.

Yet we live in a time of knowledge, and a great desire to know everything. Understand everything. And manypeople have the tendency to reject what they do not understand. “What do you mean, “M”’s identity is asecret? I WANT to know!!!” We have the right to know. Don’t we?... “What do you mean we MUST keep Mitzvot?Why? What’s the purpose of it?” So we have books, many books, and many more Rabbis and teachers who dotheir best to explain to us what is the purpose of the Mitzvot, and why must we keep them. Some people do notsatisfy with that, and they go and learn Kabbalah. Mysticism. Trying to find-out more; delving into the depths. Butthat can be dangerous: He who cannot swim well, must stay away from the depths.

Rosh Hashanah is the time when we reflect on what we did and what we achieved during the past year.Basically, we’re supposed to give account concerning the fulfilment of our religious obligations. But naturally, wealso ask question: ‘Why did this happen to me this year? Why did that happen to me this year?’… There’s aChassidic story about a man who faced God on Rosh Hashanna, and said to Him: “God… I specifically askedyou for a sweet and good year… why didn’t you give it to me? Why was my year so difficult?” Although we arenot meant to understand the ways of God and the reasons behind what’s happening to us, we still want too. Wewant to understand all the Mysteries of life. We don’t like ambiguous “M”s.- There’s a lesson to learn from James Bond, and it’s the loyalty for the mission, at all costs. For 20 movies Bondhad no idea what was the real name of “M”. Yet he remained loyal to his duty and missions, understanding thateven if he does not know much about the Boss, he’s still bound by his faith and loyalty. We should do the same.Even though we do not understand the Mitzvot or the ways of God, “The Boss”, we are still bound by faith andloyalty to Him, to carry-on and do everything that is in our power to follow the path that Hashem has laid for us inthe Torah.

Message from our President Dear Friends,

Since becoming President of the ADATH last year, I have continued to be amazed by the dedication of so many people, who positively impact the lives of our members, and the community at-large. I am truly humbled to work on behalf of our Shul, amongst so many, who care so deeply about the ADATHfamily.

TEAM Sisterhood continues to be a shining light within the ADATH – and we are allgrateful for the depth of their activities, both inside and outside the shul.

The ADATH is a special place, often referred to as a “heimish” Modern Orthodox shul that places balance on both our halachic traditions and our place in a modern world. Sometimes this is tricky, but we continue to learn, and be made stronger by always looking forward, with optimism and eager anticipation.

And over the past year, we have taken a disciplined review of what we do, how we do it, and how to be better. With the guidance of our Treasurers, Executive and Board, we reviewed financial models to have confidence in our Strategic Planning options. As you can imagine, this ongoing effort has involved many people, and has been highly scrutinized. I am deeply appreciative for the input of our Clergy, Staff, Officers and Board that have helped us get to this point.

Our place within the Community can only be assured with participation in our programs, and the financial support of our ADATH Family & Friends. To that goal, you will hear us talk about the “M’dor L’dor / From Generation to Generation” Capital and Endowment campaign, that seeks to raise at least $3 Million dollars to support our infrastructure, future Programming, Youth and New Family/Member growth plans.

Through the efforts of each one of us, the ADATH Executive and Board is confident we can continue to be an integral part of the larger community.

Hillel is a Grade 8 student at Eitz Chaim School, in Toronto. He is excited to share his Bar Mitzvah on the second day of Rosh Hashanah with his extended family, much of which lives in Montreal (the Asters, Freiheits and Weiszes).

Hillel is a regular shul-goer, who rarely misses a Minyan. He loves going on long distance bike rides, and avidly photographs emergency vehicles. He sets a great example for his four younger siblings, Avi, Aliza, Yoni and Sarah.___________________________________________________

Tzviki is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah at the ADATH on January 30th,Shabbat Parshat Yisro. He will read from the Torah, and the Haftorah, lead part of the Shabbat service, and give a D’var Torah.

Tzviki joined the ADATH at the age of three and has been a strong participant in the children’s activities ever since. He studies at the Yeshiva Lubavitch and enjoys competing in contests. He enjoys playing hockey, soccer, and ping-pong (at the ADATH each Shabbos).

Tzviki is looking forward to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah with all of his friends and family, and the members of the ADATH.

Message from TEAM Sisterhood I recently read an article, the link to which I am not even able toprovide. It was read during one of my frequent bedtime perusals ofthe Internet where I find myself searching for the meaning of life. Yes, itsounds pretty superficial, but I often stumble upon some interestingpearls of wisdom, inspiration for an amazing craft project or aninteresting recipe idea for a weekday supper; in other words, themeaning of life.

The article that I am referring to was on the topic of how to live a long life. This one had nothingto do with limiting carbohydrate intake, reducing belly fat or any kind of anti-aging formulas. Thisarticle was about forming connections.

My “reliable source” stressed the importance of being connected; of forming meaningful bonds,of being part of a group, of contributing to significant projects. The article stated that peoplewho are involved in the planning of events or activities, those whose heads spin with to-do lists,calendar dates, phone calls to make and emails to send keep their minds sharp. Ideas generatenew ideas, more ideas and the brain keeps working.

What springs to mind but the ladies of TEAM Sisterhood at the ADATH? No sooner did we finishone session of TEAM Sisterhood Boot Camp Fitness, we were pulling out our calendars to plan forthe next session. We were organizing our First Ever TEAM Sisterhood Community Yard Sale whilewe were scrambling to find copies of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, the first book of our newlyformed TEAM Sisterhood Book Club. Plans for our Second Annual Mah Jongg Party at the ADATHare underway while every Wednesday night our Mah Jongg players are sharpening their skills foryet more Mah Jongg! Yoga at the ADATH continues on a weekly basis and a call to all knittershas been made for our next TEAM Knitting Circle project.

All this makes one’s head spin, but apparently, that’s a good thing!

The ladies of TEAM Sisterhood at the ADATH are connected. We are connected by the plans weare making. We are connected by the friendships we have formed and we are connected incelebrating the successes of all of our collective efforts.

Scheduled for Shabbat, August 29, is what we have agreed to call the “TEAM Sisterhood HealthyShabbat”. This Shabbat at the ADATH will be in recognition and in celebration of all theconnections that TEAM Sisterhood has been making. At last count, the contact list of TEAMSisterhood participants consisted of over one hundred names, over forty-five of which arewomen who are new to the ADATH. Our hope is to not only have new members join in our TEAMSisterhood events and activities but to be able to welcome new members into our ADATH family.

Being connected; it is the key to success for TEAM Sisterhood and for the future of our ADATH. Onbehalf of TEAM Sisterhood at the ADATH, I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy,healthy and connected New Year.

DECORUMPrayer, to be meaningful, must be heartfelt, intensely emotional, and spiritual. All the themes of the High Holidays, and all our wishes for the coming year, are expressed through prayer. Above all, we must have the awareness, while praying, that we are speaking directly to God. God hears all prayers, in any language, as long as the prayer is heartfelt. To help achieve this goal, we respectfully request that you help enhance the dignity of our synagogue service by maintaining appropriate decorum. During services, married women are kindly requested to wear a head covering, and married men are requested to wear a Tallit. We provide these items in the lobby. Cell phones, beepers, and electronic games are not appropriate in the Sanctuary, unless needed for medical emergencies. We have a wonderful, creative children’s group at which all children are welcome. Please ask the ushers for details.

SANCTUARY DOOR POLICYIn order to enhance the dignity of our services, please do not walk in or out of the sanctuary when the Rabbi is speaking, during Hineni, and during Kedushah. At these times, the main doors to the sanctuary will be closed. You can enter via the side entrance, through the Pearl Kiddush Room, but we ask that you take a seat, temporarily, just inside the door until the Rabbi finishes speaking. Please follow the directions of our ushers.

HOME BOUND SHOFAR BLOWINGIf you or anyone you know cannot make it to services on Rosh Hashanah and would like to hear Shofar, please inform Rabbi Whitman.

MACHZORThe congregation uses the Birnbaum and the Artscroll High Holiday Machzor, but does not provide them. Please bring yours with you with your name inside.

HONOURSHave you been invited to a High Holiday aliyah or honour? Please be in Shul on time so that we may honour you in a proper and dignified way. Please note that honours are not transferrable. If you are not able to take your honour, please inform the office.

CHILDCAREWe offer a full and creative childcare program for the High Holidays. We have planned a full schedule of games and activities for each age group. PARKING LOTFor security reasons, the parking lot will be closed for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It will not be available for use prior to or during these days.

CANDELIGHTINGCandles for Yom Kippur candlelighting will be available in the upstairs kitchen. Plan to come a few minutes early to Kol Nidre to light your Yom Kippur candles. On Yom Kippur (or any other time), PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE LIT CANDLES UNATTENDED.

YIZKORThe two Autumn Yizkor services are Yom Kippur, September 23, and Shmini Atzeret, October 5.

Dear Friends,

The more we travel and read about history, the more we learn. This past summer, I was fortunate to travel with Esther to visit large and small cities in Europe, and almost wherever we went, we found traces of the Jewish Nation, intertwined in these places. We visited the famous Barcelona, and the not so well known town of Girona, which was a large Jewish Center before the Inquisition. We visited the walled city of Avila outside of Madrid and found tombstones in a museum with Hebrew writing thereon. Of course in Prague, there is an amazing Jewish Cemetery, along with 4 synagogues, one in continuous use from the 1200’s. It is there, in one of the synagogues, which is now converted to a museum, did I learn that the word Synagogue, is actually a Greek word, meaning an assembly. And in the ruins of a Synagogue in Vienna, beneath a holocaust memorial, I found the following explanation:

“Synagogue, a little sanctuary. Its triple function, religious service, learning, and administration make the Synagogue a House of Assembly, the center of religious and social life of the Jewish Community.” I sincerely hope that with all of our efforts, we too can leave a positive legacy for our next generations, by practicing and adhering to these principles.

Lawrence S. Bergman Tribute

On May 11, 2015, the ADATH hosted a Tribute to our belovedPast-President, and Provincial MNA, Lawrence Bergman,

for 20 years of devoted public service.

On March 22nd, our fabulous TEAM Sisterhood organized an ADATHMen’s Yoga evening with Audi Gozlan, followed by a Healthy dinner. The following are two of the amazing recipes from that night, compliments of Audra Shporer.

MOCK CHOPPED LIVER1 can lentils, drained and rinsed3 medium onions, diced1 tbsp. oilHandful of walnuts2 eggs, hard boiledSalt and pepper to taste

1. In non-stick fry pan on low temperature, simmer the onions in oil until very soft.

2. Using steel blade, chop all ingredients together in Food Processor.

3. Cool in refrigerator until ready to serve.

RAW KALE SALAD WITH HONEY MUSTARD DRESSING1 bunch of fresh kale2 yellow apples, thinly sliced1 box of fresh blueberries, rinsed10 dried dates, sliced thinly

• Wash the kale leaves well, and towel dry. Cut away the tough ribs of the kale leaves and discard. Tear the kale leaves into small bite-sized pieces.

• Add the sliced apples, blueberries, and sliced dates.

Toss the salad with the following dressing:Combine:¼ cup canola oil1 tbsp. Dijon mustard1 tbsp. honeyFreshly ground pepper (to taste)
