On May 28, the eighth-grade students ofCathy Campeau’s language arts classestook part in the annual “Alter Ego” Day. This event is the culminating activity

for the class, based on their reading andanalysis of the novel, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson. As Campeau explained, “It gives the stu-

dents the opportunity to step out of theirskin and take on a completely opposite per-sonality; one that they would never readilyadopt.” Additionally, through the years,

Campeau recounted how amazing the proj-ect has been, with students approaching itwith creative and sometimes complicateddemonstrations of who they are not.As part of the project, students are re-

quired to dress the part, prepare an intro-duction of themselves and act out as thatpersonality for the entire day. Seeing howstudents perceive themselves is a fascinat-ing sight.

Moreover, Campeau reflected that theiringenuity and thoughtful approach has

made the project one of those things thatstays with them forever.

From all of us at Elauwit Mediato all of our loyal readers, wewish you the happiest and

healthiest Fourth of July.As rough as things may be at times

in our country – our economy is stillrecovering, race is still an issue, andthe Phillies can’t seem to win a base-ball game anymore – things could be alot worse for us.A quick glance at the world around

us reveals just how fortunate we are, asAmericans, to have the freedoms wedo. And let’s face it, these freedoms weoften take for granted.Imagine, for just a moment, what it

must be like to live in Syria. Imagine what it must be like to live

in Iraq.

Imagine what it must be like to livein Egypt, where there’s still instabilityand a lack of confidence in the nation’sparliament. We live in a nation where, despite

our differences, we manage to co-existpeacefully for the most part.We live in a nation where our Con-

gress and where the office of the presi-dent have functioned and survived for239 years. We live in a nation where, for the

most part, we’re free to do as we please. This simply isn’t the case in many

corners of the world.Today, we give thanks for the liber-

ties won for us hundreds of years ago.We give thanks for the many women

and men who have made incrediblesacrifices to protect these freedoms inbattle in Afghanistan and Iraq – andcountless other places abroad. We remember their families who,

like they, have also made sacrifices bysaying goodbye so we can do things assimple as having a barbecue sometimethis weekend. Finally, we give thanks for all that

America is and stands for. It may notbe perfect, but a quick glance of thenews shows: life could be much worse.

in our opinion

Happy Fourth of JulyA quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

Independence Day 2015We give thanks for all the liberties wehave as Americans. We give thanks forthe sacrifices our miliary continues tomake. We give thanks that we areAmerican.

State Sen. Dawn Addiego, along with Assemblyman Chris J.Brown and AssemblywomanMaria Rodriguez-Gregg, have an-nounced the introduction of leg-islation protecting consumersfrom potentially misleading la-bels on propane tank exchanges. The bill would require retailers todisplay not just the price percylinder, but the actual price perpound for the propane gas itself;as well as giving the consumer areceipt that details the total num-ber of pounds or units sold, theprice per pound or unit and thetotal sale.“This legislation acts as an im-

portant consumer protection – itallows those purchasing propaneto make a more informed deci-sion,” said Addiego.“Given the increased use of

canister exchanges in recentyears, my colleagues and I believethat consumers would benefitfrom knowing exactly whatamount of propane they get forwhat price,” said Brown. “Whilethis is certainly a more conven-ient way to purchase gas forgrilling, it could also benefit fromsome more transparency for thecustomer. We have heard the calls

of our constituents to addressthis issue and we are moving for-ward with a common-sense solu-tion.”“A great number of propane re-

tailers and vendors have made apractice of advertising the totalprice paid for a cylinder ofpropane, as opposed to the priceper unit and the actual total vol-ume,” said Rodriguez-Gregg.“This bill would force retailers togive customers a clearer pictureof what they are getting per dol-lar, similar to the way gas pricesare advertised for roadside gasstations.”This is not the first time

propane cylinder exchanges havebeen scrutinized for questionablebusiness practices. Recently, thetwo leading propane tank ex-change companies were cited forprice fixing and colluding tolower the amount of propane ineach tank without informing theconsumer. The practice was kept so secret

that not even Wal-Mart, one ofthe largest retailers of propanetank exchanges, was made awareof the change. The legislationwould go in to effect six monthsafter passage.
