The significance of the title: “Shame” can be determined as a dignity

and image of a person. In Baba and Nyonya’s culture, it is

important for girl to take care of her dignity as well as her pride.

Girl should avoid anything that could scratch her image so that her good name is maintain.

Issues in the story. The importance of having a good

manner.- In the story, we can clearly see how the

society provides standard rules for everyone to follow and they have to behave according to these rules.

- For example, “You no shame, close your leg…”

- Society expects a girl to behave like a girl which she must sit appropriately and she must be concerned about her manner.

Superstitious- Siew Eng was treated badly because her

mother believed that she brought bad luck in the family because the fortune teller told the mother that the daughter was cursed. This prove that Tua Ee is clearly superstitious.

The importance of the practice of visiting.- From the story, we can concluded that it

is important for the family members to visit each other especially the eldest. This helps to strengthen the relationship.

- This also shows the readers that Baba and Nyonya’s community are close knitted.

The reason for the usage of local language.
