We are delighted to welcome you all to the 30th Anniversary Shalva Dinner. Many of you have been to our Dinners over the last few years and would have witnessed the huge growth in Shalva’s prominence as one of the world’s leading charities for children and young adults with disabilities.
This year has been unbelievably hard for Shalva with it having to close its doors for a number of months during the first lockdown period in Israel. The knock-on effect to all its children and young adults has been immense. Despite this, Shalva still found a way to help many of these children by undertaking house or flat visits or giving therapy online.
Thankfully Shalva has now re-opened its doors but the financial effect has been huge, with a substantial part of its annual income being derived from the Shalva Café, Shalva Workshop and sports facilities not being used during closure and this is where you, our wonderful friends are able to help .
We hope you enjoy the wonderful entertainment in our program tonight and able to support generously.
Sincerely
Simon and Ingrid
Dear Friends,
Shalva is a visionary organisation that leads the way in making our world a better place where all children, regardless of their disabilities, are given the love, support and respect they deserve and need, not just to survive but to thrive in life. As British Friends of this noble endeavour we have been proud to contribute and be associated with such meaningful work.
In these challenging times of Covid 19, the Shalva services are more desperately needed than ever before. Families all over the world are struggling to keep their heads above water but for Shalva families the challenges of a life without the possibility of the respite and specialist support they so desperately need is a perilous situation to navigate.
Shalva has shown the world how when we dare to dream boldly, the seemingly impossible can become a beautiful reality. This year, due to the pandemic, Shalva has had to temporarily suspend all their usual sources of income generating activities the centre created in order to be self-sufficient, and they face the terrifying threat of future closures. Now, more than ever before, our financial support is essential to ensure that Shalva can keep their Centre open to all those whose lives depend on it so critically.
As a dinner committee we have tried our best to recreate the uplifting and inspiring content of an evening we would have loved to share with you in person. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your continued support and ask you to please dig deep into your hearts and pockets so that once again, we can all come together and make a significant contribution to the lives of the Shalva children and their families.
With all best wishes
Deborah Fisher

My Dear Friends,
As we gather this evening, each from their own home, we celebrate the amazing work that we have achieved together over the past 30 years. We recognise the thousands of children and family members benefiting from Shalva's programmes and services; their daily successes creating a beautiful tapestry of hope and opportunity. The magnificent Shalva National Centre, which we are privileged to call home, has been distinguished as a centre of excellence which is visited by disability professionals and dignitaries from across the globe.
This year, we have all been met with unprecedented challenges, in particular Shalva's families and those around the world who faced the threat of COVID-19 whilst caring for a family member with disabilities. At Shalva, we were able to offer support to all of these families initially from afar and then as soon as was allowed by re-opening our doors and adapting our programmes, working in partnership with the Health Ministry to meet the new health and safety requirements. I am delighted that our programmes are open and we can continue to serve thousands of families weekly.
This evening, you will be entertained by our very own Shalva Band. Rising to stardom through the Israeli television singing competition and then wowing the world with their performance at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, the Shalva Band has impacted millions of people and trail blazed new standards of inclusion in cultural forums globally. The ripples of impact have reached further than we could ever imagine; giving children and families newfound hope for their futures and refining the way the world has come to understand and embrace disability and they continue to create inspiring music, even in the darkest of times.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your invaluable friendship and support, which has brought Shalva to where we are today and will surely continue to bring Shalva to new heights.
My Dear Friends,
Thank you for showing your support for the British Friends of Shalva by joining tonight's very special event. The continued growth of the British Friends of Shalva, has been key to enabling the therapies, programmes and services from which Shalva's thousands of children and family members benefit day-in and day-out. Shalva gives them the fortitude and tools to overcome challenges and lead lives of meaning.
We are in our fifth year in the Shalva National Centre; and despite the challenges we faced this year, it is so wonderful to see new areas in which we are able to grow. This past year, we opened more independent living apartments, expanded the number of young adults joining our Rising in Rank programme and are developing the Shalva Institute as a centre of excellence through which we will provide training courses, both physically and virtually with disability care professionals globally. The Shalva Institute will enable us to form partnerships and share our techniques and models of excellence with organisations around the world to ensure increased opportunities for inclusion of people with disabilities in all regions.
It is only with our friends and partners around the world that this is possible, and I thank you for being with us every step of the way and specifically tonight at our British Friends first virtual dinner. I look forward to hosting you in Jerusalem on your next visit to Israel, which I hope will be able to happen soon.

Good evening.
It is a great pleasure to welcome you here this evening at the British Friends of Shalva 7th Annual Dinner – Celebrating 30 years of Changing Lives. Whilst I am so sorry that we are not able to gather as usual, I am so grateful to all of our Dinner Committee members for their tireless energy and commitment to ensuring that we still come together and for their tenacity and creativity which has enable this wonderful programme and new dinner format to be realised.
To all of our supporters here this evening, our sponsors, Trustees, Dinner Committee, Brochure Committee and Table Hosts – thank you. Your efforts help further our mission of bringing hope, opportunity, and 'Shalva', peace of mind, to families struggling more than ever this year, to care for their children and young adults with disabilities. Please accept our deepest appreciation for all you are doing to strengthen Shalva’s future and enabling its ongoing operation to provide life-changing programmes for all of Shalva's beneficiaries.
A special thank you to our Dinner Chairs, Ingrid and Simon Sterling for taking on this role once again. This evening is a product of your dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm.

Message from HE Tzipi Hotovely, Ambassador of Israel to the Court of St James’s I send my very warmest wishes to all the supporters and friends of Shalva here in the United Kingdom. As Israel’s new Ambassador, I would ordinarily have hoped to meet you all and celebrate Shalva’s good work at your Annual Dinner. I understand that, like so much else, the Coronavirus has put these plans on hold, but it remains my hope that we will be able to join together in the not too distant future. Despite these challenging times, I know and appreciate Shalva continues to make a difference, supporting the lives of thousands of Israelis with disabilities through its pioneering National Center in Jerusalem. In so many ways, this embodies the founding spirit of the Jewish state, assisting those from all backgrounds regardless of means, promoting social inclusion, and enabling even more Israelis to take an active part in their communities. I pay tribute to the efforts of Rabbi Samuels and his entire team, and to all of you as Shalva’s British friends. Together, you are brightening the lives of thousands, demonstrating the values that make the Jewish state so special, and strengthening the precious bond between Israel and the Diaspora. In these difficult and socially distant times, your efforts could not be more needed, and I wish you well as you continue your admirable work.

Message from the Chief Rabbi in honour of the 30th anniversary of Shalva
I am delighted to send my very best wishes to everyone associated with SHALVA UK as you celebrate the 30th anniversary of this outstanding organization. It’s hard to believe that it is 30 years since the unconditional love of Rabbi Kalman Samuels and his wife Malki delivered a remarkable breakthrough for their son, Yossi, in his educational development. Today, motivated by that very same unconditional love, SHALVA’s commitment to thousands of people with disabilities is stronger than ever. As the world struggles to overcome the hardships brought about by the spread of Covid-19, huge additional financial and practical pressures mean that SHALVA’s pioneering education and support are an essential lifeline for so many families. SHALVA’s work is chesed of the highest order. I commend all who continue to make it such a success, for their selfless devotion, coupled with high professional standards. May SHALVA be blessed to continue to go mechayil el chayil, ‘from strength to strength’ for many years to come.

Music That Changes LivesThe Shalva Band is comprised of 8 talented musicians with disabilities including two lead vocalists who are blind and percussionists with Down syndrome and Williams syndrome. Maintaining a busy professional schedule, the band performs live to the highest musical standards, in Israel and abroad. Inspiring audiences with its repertoire and charm, the band is one of Shalva’s most celebrated inclusion programmes.
The band members enjoy the constant support of Shalva, one of Israel's leading organizations which empowers people with disabilities and their families. They also study, work, and volunteer in the broader community. Some of them are graduates of Shalva’s rehabilitative programmes and their musical talents were discovered and developed through Shalva’s music therapy programme. What began as a unique outlet for talented Shalva programme participants in 2005, has since evolved into a model for cultural inclusion and continues to impact audiences and musicians throughout Israel and beyond.
The Shalva Band were invited to perform at the largest live music event in the world – Eurovision 2019 – and totally blew their audience of almost 200 million away.
The 2019 Eurovision theme “Dare to Dream” could not be truer, the band dreamt and achieved big dreams and surpassed every expectation – creating new standards from which we will all benefit for years to come.
