Rabbi Spira-Savett

(Continued on the following page …)

It has been more than two and a half years since the Pew Research Center published a study on the Jews of America that told us… things you probably already knew.On one side, it is remarkable

how the Jewish community has continued to flourish. Not much more than a century after the mass uprooting of Jews from Europe, after the Holocaust which devastated our people and shook our faith – more than 90% of the Jews in America express pride in being Jewish.Seventy percent of Jews participate

in a Passover Seder. Almost the same number look at Jewish identity in

terms of a strong sense of ethics, and an attachment to a long history and a culture. Overwhelming numbers of the least religious Jews have Jew-ish friends. My favorite statistic: 42% regard

“having a good sense of humor” as an “essential part” of being Jewish! On the other side, there is a drift

away from traditional institutions and patterns of Jewish living. Less than a third belong to a synagogue. Less than half know the Hebrew alphabet, and only about one-fourth of Conservative Jews think that observing Jewish law is an essential part of being Jewish. One of the headlines was the fact

that 30% of American Jews identify with no specific “denomination”

– whether Conservative, Reform, Orthodox, or Reconstructionist. This is one Jewish version of the so-called “Nones”, the growing spiritual sector in American life.If you’ve followed this, you’ve heard

a lot of worry and handwringing. But what I see is incredible op-portunity.Let’s take the slice of the population

who do not align with a denomina-tion. You as a Temple member may well be in this group. The Pew Study says that more than half believe in God or are engaged in thinking about God. Most have Jewish social connections, attended a Seder, went to services sometime during the past year. A quarter fasted on Yom

We are about to proceed with the next major project, brought to us by the Interior Commit-tee, of beautification of the Sanctuary with ,הידור מצווה –the installation of the Twelve Tribes Windows. The windows, as illustrated below, will be installed in the clearstory above the bima in the sanctuary. In addition to Beautification of

the Sanctuary, sponsorship of these windows represent an opportunity to memorialize and/or to honor loved ones. The individual windows can be crafted at different times and in an arbitrary order. Sponsors will be able to select the tribe window(s) they wish to sponsor; the windows being

Kippur and donated to a Jewish organization. And these are the people who are sup-

posedly disconnected from Judaism! What it confirms to me is this: I know that by overwhelming numbers, Jews are people who crave purpose in life, deep connections to people, a sense of rootedness in history and heritage, and the knowledge that our lives make a difference in the world. Our institution, Beth Abraham, has

for more than two years been tooling up to become the key institution in our area that understands what Jews crave, and is ready to help harness it and unleash it, among ourselves and into the world. We are an institution that sees strength in the mirror and opportunity everywhere. We are not there, but we are poised. Those are the premises of last year’s

strategic plan. The culture of strategic thinking spreads in our organization. If you come to a meeting of the Rit-ual Committee, the Religious School Committee, the Finance Committee, or the Membership Committee, you’ll hear not just practical things but re-flective conversation about what Jews want to learn and experience. If I had a call sheet, e-mail log, podcast

record, you’d see that I have been talk-ing with or listening in on the thought

leaders in American Jewish life, in and out of synagogues, trolling for ideas and mental models.Think about it – even with all the

headwinds in the face of organized, affiliated Jewish life, most of the “nonreligious” still have a foothold in Jewish community and commitment. Craving a reason to be more connected, more invested. That’s true nationwide, and certainly around Nashua in every direction. So there are two kinds of things we

need to be doing as an institution. One is to invigorate the traditional dimensions of the synagogue for those of us who lead services to make them more spiritual and joyful, for people who love to davven to deepen their awareness of prayer, for our Religious School to be more effective. The other is to be our own engine

of “disruptive innovation.” My friend Dan Libenson – we served together as officers of our college Hillel – gave a terrific ELI talk last year. (That’s a Jewish TED-style talk.) His analogy was photography. Today photography flourishes like never before. Almost ev-eryone you know now carries a camera with them all the time. Decidedly non-technical people have mastered brand new ways to share photographs with friends. Real-time photos are now a key way people connect with each other.

And yet, the company that coined by phrase “Kodak moment” went bank-rupt. Eastman Kodak saw themselves as an institution that sold film and film cameras. They saw digital as an assault on quality and a competitive threat. But in time, digital took over, and its quality has come to rival or surpass film.Dan’s lesson is that we should see

Judaism and Jewish organizations the same way. One way or another, Jewish connections and ideas and concepts and values are going to transform dynamically and flourish as much as ever. But those who see themselves only in the “film business” will not be the vehicles and vessels for it.Beth Abraham’s future is both as a

traditional synagogue and an innovator in connecting Jews with each other, with Jewish ideas, with Jewish actions in their lives and the world, with God. The way I see the world, and our

capacity, there is really no way we can fail. From you, we need two things. That you deepen your own Jewish engagement – take your next step, from wherever you are. And that you step into some leadership, at any level, whether you have seen yourself in the past as Jewish leader or not. And I mean starting now, even in the summer. L’shalom,

Rabbi Jon

installed in the order sponsored. The money raised through sponsorship of the twelve tribes windows will be used to offset our residual mortgage principal, reducing the carrying cost to the synagogue. Sponsors may be individuals, families, groups of families or organizations. Members who have joined more recently and did not have the opportunity to support the 2001 building project can use their sponsor-

ship to express their appreciation for our beautiful facility and help reduce our mortgage at the same time. The windows will be crafted to allow

maximum light to filter through, keep-ing the bright nature of the sanctuary we all love. The artist is Ruth Weiner Harris, who designed the previous windows that adorn the sanctuary. The design is being donated.Sponsorship of a window is $10,000.

We are hoping to have the first win-

dow installed for the High Holidays. To select your window, please contact the Interior Committee (Elaine Brody, Chair or Ruth Weiner Harris, Artist). Please join us for the annual meeting

of the congregation, Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 6:30 PM where the design sketches for all twelve of the windows will be on display.

Opinions

Something to Think AboutI am writing this col-

umn from Jerusalem. I came to Israel in early May because two of our granddaughters were going to be in a play, and I used that as an excuse to visit them. The play, Number the Stars, is about the Danish resistance in WWII. It was wonderful, there was a great deal of kvelling on my part, but there was so much more. I had the honor of being in Is-

rael for Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. These two holidays, celebrated one day after the other, are two parts of a whole. On Tuesday, the day before Yom HaZikaron, I was privileged to hear my cousin, Noa Lev, speak to a group of Young Judaea Year Course students about the life and death of her son Haggai. He was a captain in the IDF and was killed by a sniper fourteen years ago when he was twenty-two years old. It was her fourth talk of the week, and I was in awe of her strength as she told the story of a mischievous boy

who turned into a serious soldier. The students were wholly engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and shared personal thoughts with Noa after the talk. That evening, Erev Yom HaZi-karon, at eight o’clock, sirens sounded all ofer Israel, cars stopped, drivers quietly stepped out of and stood next to their cars, and we stood together as a family in silent reflection until the sirens faded. Imagine, an entire nation stopping in unison to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. On Wednesday, we went to the

elementary school to attend the me-morial assembly. Savyon is in the fifth grade, and her class was in charge of the program. The program began at 11am as the second sirens sounded. A schoolyard filled with children stand-ing in silent respect is a sight to behold. There were speeches and songs, and six fallen soldiers’ lives were featured. Kate and I did not know that one of those soldiers would be Haggai. It was almost overwhelming to hear eleven year old Savyon and her classmates tell about Haggai and hold his photo for all to see. In Israel, everyone goes

Elaine Brody

to the Army; so these children are all acquainted with the dangers faced by soldiers. And then, on Wednesday evening,

the fireworks and revelry began. Fami-lies stayed out late with their children, there were bonfires in some neighbor-hoods, and Israelis celebrated the 68th year of independent statehood…a celebration that could not have taken place without the sacrifice of those we remembered the day before. On Thursday, we did what all families do on Independence Day. We had a family barbecue with Ofer’s family! You will probably get this bulletin

before Memorial Day in the United States. I urge you to make it more than a day to have a barbecue and a day off from school and work. Take time to go to the local Memorial Day parade and observance in your town. Reflect upon those who paid with their lives for our freedom. Talk about this with your children. As always, I hope I have given you

something to think about. L’hitraot,

Elaine
