Dear Parents and Students,

I am thrilled to have you be a part of Willowcreek’s Shakespeare Competition Team. We will be attending USF/SUU’s 34th annual Utah Shakespeare Competition. Students travel from all over the country to attend this competition and we are privileged that Alpine School District has allowed us to attend. More information about past competitions and this year’s schedule can be found at www.bard.org.

The overall cost for this trip will be between $150-$200. This cost includes: Bus for 3 days, registration for the competition, hotel accommodations for 2 nights, tickets to the three shows we will be attending, and a team sweatshirt. This price DOES NOT include food or any souvenirs your student may wish to purchase. Please plan accordingly. Money for Shakespeare will be due no later than September 15th.

We will be staying overnight for 2 evenings at a hotel in Cedar City. The hotel is located close enough to SUU that students will be able to walk to campus. Prior to our trip, I will be providing you with the name address and phone number of the hotel. Please make sure your student contacts you with his/her room number when he/she arrives as the hotel will not divulge any information about the students once we arrive. You may also contact me at 801.318.0783.

There are also plenty of food establishments located near by in Cedar City as well as on SUU campus. Students will be responsible for any food costs while we are down in Cedar City.

Attached you will find a rehearsal schedule as well as tentative agenda of our schedule during our stay. Please look very carefully at the dates and times-especially for your own student’s rehearsals. We will be having an Evening of Shakespeare Performance on Tuesday October 5th @ 7:00 p.m. It is a free performance and will give friends and family members the chance to see all the competition pieces as well as the alternate performances before we leave for the competition. Many locations for workshops and for competition rounds will not be determined until Friday October 8th at registration. Please look this over and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Also, if you are interested in chaperoning our trip, please let me know as soon as possible.

We will be attending three productions while we are down there: The Utah Shakespearean Festival’s productions of The Diary of Anne Frank, Pericles, and Greater Tuna. Ticket prices are included in the overall cost of this trip. Information about each of these shows can be found at www.bard.org or by calling 1-800-PLAYTIX. I also have a copy of Greater Tuna and The Diary of Anne Frank for you to peruse prior to the trip. All of Shakespeare plays can be found at http://the-tech.mit.edu/Shakespeare. Please let me know if you do not want your student attending any one of these performances so that I can arrange for other accommodations for them.

Students will be expected to behave in an exemplary manner while we are attending the competition. This is the only overnight trip that Alpine School District allows for jr. high school students. Please do not jeopardize that opportunity. I will be providing a packing list prior to us leaving for the competition. Please take a moment to look over the parent consent forms as well as the team contract. I will need all forms signed and returned to me no later than September 15th, 2010.

I look forward to working will all of you! Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns about this trip.

Sincerely,

Ms. Kris JenningsDrama TeacherWillowcreek Middle School801.318.0783

Shakespeare Team Contract

I will be expected to adhere to the following during rehearsals and while attending the Shakespeare Competition:

1. I understand that being in this competition is a huge time commitment. I promise that, to the best of my knowledge, all my scheduling conflicts have been listed on my audition form. I know that if I miss even one rehearsal without prior notice (more than 48 hours) I will be cut from the competition team. If I do have a scheduling conflict, I will talk about it with Ms. Jennings at least 2 days in advance. I also understand that I cannot miss the last two weeks of rehearsal or any performances for ANY REASON EXCEPT DEATH! :) 2. I promise that I will come to each rehearsal prepared. I will be memorized on time. 3. I understand that I need to arrange my rides to and from rehearsal ahead of time. I know that Ms. Jennings has other time commitments outside of rehearsal and I will arrange to be picked up so she doesn’t have to wait for me. 4. I understand that I will not touch or play with any prop, costume, or set piece that is not mine. I understand that if I do I may be removed from the cast.5. I promise to leave my emotional baggage outside of the auditorium.I understand that I am expected to keep my grades up. I will be required to show my grades to Ms. Jennings at the beginning of every week in order to continue to participate. If I maintain any Is or Fs for longer than two weeks I will be removed from the competition.6. I promise to bring a pencil and paper to each rehearsal for notes.7. I understand that no part is small. I will show up to rehearsal with a positive attitude, with my mind open, and with my heart ready to perform.8. I understand that there will be absolutely no members of the opposite sex in my hotel room (this includes chaperones)-Games, restrooms, and places to eat can all be done outside of my room. ANY violation of this will result in my being sent home immediately (even if it’s 4 AM!!).9. I understand that I will treat all chaperones, hotel staff, competition staff, and/or bus drivers like they are Ms. Jennings-This means that any instructions that are given by one of these fine people need to be followed as if Ms. Jennings were the one giving them. If she receive complaints from any one of these people about me, I will not be allowed back to future competitions and, depending on the severity of the situation, may need to be sent home early from the competition.10. The chaperones must know where I am at all times-I will be assigned a specific chaperone to report to. That chaperone must have some way of getting a hold of me in case of an emergency. If they cannot find you within 5 minutes, they will assume I am dead and will send out the proper search team. Ms. Js phone number is 801.318.0783. The only time she will not answer the phone is if she is watching a performance. You may text message her at any time.11. I will need to be in my room no later than 10:00 p.m. and in bed no later than 10:30 p.m and my behavior at the competition should be extraordinary- Attending this competition is a privilege. My team sweatshirt that will let others know which school you are attending. I am aware that all my actions will reflect on us as a school. I will not leave early or arrive late for performances or rounds. I will not text message, make phone calls, play on your phone, or eat during a performance. I will be courteous and respectful of other schools. I will be respectful of the other hotel guests (since we are not the only people at the hotel!) The long and short of it is: I WILL BE GOOD. :)12. I will have a positive attitude and have fun!

I am aware of the expectations for me/my student during rehearsals and while attending the Utah Shakespeare Competition. I understand that violations of the above may result in my student being sent home early and possibly being banned from attending future competitions.

Male Monologues for AuditionsComedic:

The Two Gentlemen of Verona Act II, sc. 3 (line 1 – Prose)

LAUNCE Nay, 'twill be this hour ere I have done weeping; all the kind of the Launces have this very fault. I have received my proportion, like the prodigious son, and am going with Sir Proteus to the Imperial's court. I think Crab, my dog, be the sourest-natured dog that lives: my mother weeping, my father wailing, my sister crying, our maid howling, our cat wringing her hands, and all our house in a great perplexity, yet did not this cruel-hearted cur shed one tear: he is a stone, a very pebble stone, and has no more pity in him than a dog: a Jew would have wept to have seen our parting; why, my grandam, having no eyes, look you, wept herself blind at my parting. Nay, I'll show you the manner of it. This shoe is my father: no, this left shoe is my father: no, no, this left shoe is my mother: nay, that cannot be so neither: yes, it is so, it is so, it hath the worser sole. This shoe, with the hole in it, is my mother, and this my father; a vengeance on't! there 'tis: now, sit, this staff is my sister, for, look you, she is as white as a lily and as small as a wand: this hat is Nan, our maid: I am the dog: no, the dog is himself, and I am the dog--Oh! the dog is me, and I am myself; ay, so, so. Now come I to my father; Father, your blessing: now should not the shoe speak a word for weeping: now should I kiss my father; well, he weeps on. Now come I to my mother: O, that she could speak now like a wood woman! Well, I kiss her; why, there 'tis; here's my mother's breath up and down. Now come I to my sister; mark the moan she makes. Now the dog all this while sheds not a tear nor speaks a word; but see how I lay the dust with my tears.

Dramatic:Macbeth

Act II, sc. 1 (line 33) MACBETH Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? or art thou but A dagger of the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain? I see thee yet, in form as palpable As this which now I draw. Thou marshall'st me the way that I was going; And such an instrument I was to use. Mine eyes are made the fools o' the other senses, Or else worth all the rest; I see thee still, And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood, Which was not so before. There's no such thing: It is the bloody business which informs Thus to mine eyes. Now o'er the one halfworld Nature seems dead, and wicked dreams abuse The curtain'd sleep; witchcraft celebrates Pale Hecate's offerings, and wither'd murder, Alarum'd by his sentinel, the wolf,Whose howl's his watch, thus with his stealthy pace. With Tarquin's ravishing strides, towards his design Moves like a ghost. Thou sure and firm-set earth, Hear not my steps, which way they walk, for fear Thy very stones prate of my whereabout, And take the present horror from the time, Which now suits with it. Whiles I threat, he lives: Words to the heat of deeds too cold breath gives.

A bell rings I go, and it is done; the bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell That summons thee to heaven or to hell.

Twelfth Night Act II, sc. 2

VIOLA I left no ring with her: what means this lady? Fortune forbid my outside have not charm'd her! She made good view of me; indeed, so much, That sure methought her eyes had lost her tongue, For she did speak in starts distractedly. She loves me, sure; the cunning of her passion Invites me in this churlish messenger. None of my lord's ring! why, he sent her none. I am the man: if it be so, as 'tis, Poor lady, she were better love a dream. Disguise, I see, thou art a wickedness, Wherein the pregnant enemy does much. How easy is it for the proper-false In women's waxen hearts to set their forms! Alas, our frailty is the cause, not we! For such as we are made of, such we be. How will this fadge? my master loves her dearly; And I, poor monster, fond as much on him; And she, mistaken, seems to dote on me. What will become of this? As I am man, My state is desperate for my master's love;As I am woman,--now alas the day!—What thriftless sighs shall poor Olivia breathe! O time! thou must untangle this, not I; It is too hard a knot for me to untie!

As in a vault, an ancient receptacle,Where, for these many hundred years, the bonesOf all my buried ancestors are packed:Where bloody Tybalt, yet but green in earth,Lies festering in his shroud; where, as they say,At some hours in the night spirits resort;.Alack, alack, is it not like that I,So early waking, what with loathsome smells,And shrieks like mandrakes' torn out of the earth,That living mortals, hearing them, run mad:. O, if I wake, shall I not be distraught,Environed with all these hideous fears? And madly play with my forefather's joints? And pluck the mangled Tybalt from his shroud? And, in this rage, with some great kinsman's bone,As with a club, dash out my desperate brains?O, look! methinks I see my cousin's ghostSeeking out Romeo, that did spit his bodyUpon a rapier's point: stay, Tybalt, stay!Romeo, I come! this do I drink to thee.
