2015 Annual Report 3
From the PresidentMy two years as President of the Shaker Schools Foundation have aff orded me the opportunity to work with the Foundation’s extraordinary trustees, who are generous with both their time and resources. And, I have been humbled and thrilled to witness the philanthropy of our community, our alumni, and the region.
As a Shaker Heights resident, member of the larger business community, and parent of three Shaker graduates, my expectations of the Shaker Heights City Schools are both personal and professional. My experiences as a Foundation trustee continue to confi rm that the Shaker Schools off er an exceptional education to every child. We are proud of our extraordinary faculty, administrators, and staff , and the Shaker Schools Foundation is a tremendous asset.
Guided by our mission and Strategic Plan, governed by our dedicated Board, and supported by our loyal and generous donors, the Shaker Schools Foundation continues to grow. Now in our 34th year, the Foundation is a mature organization that is respected throughout the community and known for its contributions to the Shaker Schools. During the 2015 fi scal year, our assets exceeded $3 million, and our independent audit was clean. The Annual Fund broke all previous records to raise more than $137,000, and we contained our
operating expenses to end with a surplus for the sixth consecutive year. From July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, we focused on four broad goals: raise permanent, unrestricted endowment; increase the number of alumni donors; increase the Foundation’s visibility in the community; and increase the number of donors in Northeast Ohio. Elsewhere in this Annual Report you will read the details of our progress, including the creation
of the High School’s Innovative Center for Personalized Learning and Family Engagement.
Thank you for your support! We are indebted to the alumni, parents, faculty, friends, and organizations that recognize the importance of giving generously so that teaching and learning will thrive in Shaker Heights, Ohio. It has been my privilege to serve as President of the very fi rst foundation in the State of Ohio to support a public school system.

4 Shaker Schools Foundation
During fiscal year 2015, the Foundation was
involved in a number of activities in support
of its mission to provide resources to enrich
the educational experience of students of
the Shaker Heights City School District.
And, we upheld our Strategic Plan by con-
tinuing to attract permanent unrestricted
endowment, increasing the Foundation’s
visibility in the community, connecting with
our alumni, and encouraging Northeast
Ohioans to donate.

2015 Annual Report 5
* The new Innovative Center for Personalized Learning and Family Engagement was created during summer 2014 and opened in time for the first day of school in August. It provides high-quality alternative and accelerated learning opportunities for students in a non-traditional setting; hosts a resource center for parents and families; and expands options for students who wish to take courses not offered at the High School. Through an agreement with the City of Shaker Heights, the IC is housed on the lower level of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Center on Lee Road. Major funders of the project include the Arminius Foundation, Huntington National Bank, Information Systems Integration Specialists LLC, Annual Fund donors to the Shaker Schools Foundation, and A Night for the Red & White 2014. On September 29, the Foundation hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception for all donors. In June 2015, 14 IC students graduated from Shaker Heights High School!
* On October 7 and 8, 2014, the choral music department hosted a residency by the House Jacks, a contemporary a cappella quintet. The musicians presented workshops for 200 choral students, coaching sessions for all the High School choirs, and two assemblies for the entire High School. They also performed a full-length concert for the public and participated in the High School’s annual fall choir concert. The Foundation’s Madeline and Dennis Block Fund and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation provided support for this educational project.
* Projects supported by the Class of 1950/January 51 continue to be implemented. They include teacher creativity grants; fee subsidies for students to enroll in on-site Princeton Review courses for the PSAT, ACT, and SAT; and a six-week Summer Academy to help 25 incoming 9th graders increase the likelihood of their success in High School, a three-week Summer Academy for incoming sophomores, and a three-week Summer Academy for incoming juniors, who are the first cohort of Summer Academy students.
* Donors to the Foundation enjoyed an appreciation event in the Learning Garden in June 2015. The Foundation has supported the evolution of a garden in the corner of the High School’s interior courtyard to an outdoor learning lab that includes fruits, vegetables, bushes, and trees that reflect the school’s diversity and International Baccalaureate attitudes. In the past few years, teachers and staff from many disciplines have used this outdoor “classroom” to reach over 1,000 students. According to Stacey Steggert, who manages the Learning Garden, “the generosity of the Shaker Schools Foundation has helped us transform an underused space into an education oasis that embodies that which is at the heart of good teaching – empowering students to find their passion that they were able to go out into the world to do good.”

12 Shaker Schools Foundation
Annual proceeds from many of the Shaker Schools Foundation’s endowed funds support teacher grants that enrich the education of Shaker’s students. During the 2015 fiscal year, the Foundation distributed $10,600 in 17 enrichment grants to 40 teachers. Sample grants in elementary, middle, and high school buildings provided:
* Support of basic skills among Kindergarteners and their families at Fernway, Lomond, and Mercer elementary schools;
* Materials to enhance Primary Years Program units in spelling, writing, and social studies; alternate seating to help students focus in class; and a planting project in the K-4 buildings;
* Support for the theatre program and aer-school math and reading at Woodbury;
* Enhancement of beginning Spanish and a seventh grade science unit at Shaker Middle School;
* Continued expansion of the Learning Garden at Shaker Heights High School.
The Foundation also provided $156,772 in additional funds to support special projects such as master classes for voice and strings at the High School; the Summer Academy program for underachieving High School students, and the purchase of a sound system for the baseball team. For the MAC Scholars Program, the Foundation raised $5,000 from the Harry K. Fox and Emma R. Fox Foundation and $2,500 from Key Foundation. The Foundation also sponsored the High School’s TEDx event in February.

The Friends of the Shaker Schools Foundation presented the twenty-third A Night for the Red & White on March 7, 2015, at the Tudor Arms Hotel, Doubletree by Hilton. More than 800 devoted friends of the Shaker Schools enjoyed a wonderful party. Thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors, ticket buyers, and donors, the event raised more than $130,000 for the enhancement of technology, the arts, humanities, and health and fitness in each of the Shaker Heights City Schools.
This year’s party enjoyed the support of a record-breaking 28 sponsors. Very special thanks go to the Arminius Foundation, Forest City, Hahn Loeser & Parks LLP, Huntington National Bank, and Tucker Ellis LLP, our Benefactors and most generous donors. We extend appreciation to the following Patrons, who give at the next highest level: Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP, Cleveland Clinic, FirstMerit Bank, KeyBank, Penske Cleveland, Squire Patton Boggs LLP, Ulmer & Berne LLP, and University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center.
The Foundation also is grateful to our Fellows: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Calvetta Brothers Floor Show, CIMA Plastics Group, C.P. Braman & Co., Inc., DDR Corp, Ellen Seguin Design, Fih Third Bank, HealthSpan Integrated Care, Hogan Transportation, Karlovec & Company, Legacy Capital Partners, Liberty Ford Solon, Neville Architects, Shout!, and Thorman Petrov Griffin Co, LPA.
As sponsors of the Shaker Schools Foundation, these organizations receive recognition at A Night for the Red & White and at Foundation events and in Foundation publications throughout the calendar year.
Many thanks and sincere congratulations to the volunteers who spent countless hours planning the 2015 event – and to the community for its dedicated and loyal support.
