VOLUME 4 ISSUE 6 Page 3

THE NEW YORK STATE EXCELSIOR SCHOLARSHIP This year, Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature enacted the nation’s first tuition-free degree program, the Excelsior Scholarship. The Scholarship is making college possible for hundreds of thousands of students across the state and helping to alleviate the crushing burden of student debt. A college educa-tion is increasingly necessary to secure the jobs of tomorrow, and the Excelsior Scholarship ensures New York’s students have access to a quality education and the skills they need to succeed.

KEY POINTS: By 2024, 3.5 million jobs in New York State will require an Associate’s Degree or higher – roughly 420,000 more jobs than in 2014. Even as high-

er education becomes more necessary for an individual to succeed, the cost to attain a college degree is rising beyond what most families can afford. To make

college possible for everyone, Governor Cuomo’s Excelsior Scholarship program will provide more than 940,000 eligible families and individuals making up to

$125,000 per year the opportunity to attend college tuition-free at SUNY or CUNY schools. Tuition-free college will begin immediately for students whose families

make up to $100,000 annually and extend to those making $125,000 annually by 2019.

ELIGIBILITY: In order to apply, students must: Be residents of New York State; Plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two- or four-year degree program; Take 30 credits per year and make progress towards graduation; Maintain good academic standing; Be on track to graduate on time with an Associate’s Degree in two years or a Bachelor’s Degree in four years. HOW IT WORKS: When fully implemented, the Excelsior Scholarship, in combination with other aid programs, will allow 200,000 students — 52 percent of resi-dent full-time students—to attend a SUNY or CUNY college tuition-free. New York already operates a generous $1 billion Tuition Assistance Program. The Excel-sior Scholarship is intended to supplement all current aid programs, including but not limited to TAP, PELL, and SUNY/CUNY Tuition Credit programs. The Excel-sior Scholarship then provides assistance to students to cover any tuition gaps and make college tuition free at New York’s prized public universities. The total cost of the program is approximately $163 million.

LEARN MORE: To learn more about the scholarship, including frequently asked questions, and how to apply, visit www.HESC.ny.gov or text COLLEGE to

81336.

APPLICATIONS: Online applications are expected to be available beginning June 7th. Students may provide an email to receive a notification that the applica-

tion is open. To sign up for the Excelsior Scholarship Alert, go to www.hesc.ny.gov/excelsior

Attention Rising Seniors! The 2017-18 personal essay prompts are here! The 650 word limit will remain the same.

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Re-count a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. 5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Take advantage of the summer months to begin a rough draft of your college essay. It is a great way to stay on top of the college application process!
