FFFROMROMROM TTTHEHEHE DDDESKESKESK OOOFFF PPPASTORASTORASTOR BBBRADRADRAD . . . . . . . . .
Sometimes things go the
way that we want and sometimes
they just don’t. A few weeks ago I
underwent my provisional inter-
views for the order of elder, and I
was approved in three areas; how-
ever, I was continued in one area.
This means that I will not be com-
missioned in 2015. Since I was ap-
proved in 3 areas, I will not have to
re-interview in those areas. I will
only need to repeat the one inter-
view that I was continued in.
So what does that mean?
Nothing will really appear different
at Shady Grove. I will continue at
Shady Grove in the same position
and with the same credentials as I
have been serving for the last sever-
al years. I will still lead worship and
administer the sacraments as I have
in the past, in addition to my other
pastoral and staff responsibilities.
What this does mean is
that the Board of Ordained Minis-
tries, while recognizing my gifts and
preparedness in several areas, has
asked me to focus on preparing
myself in some particular areas that
they feel will benefit both me and
the church that I serve. Over the
next year, I will be intentional
about my growth in those areas.
Next winter, I will have the oppor-
tunity to go back to the board and
revisit my progress.
Is this frustrating? Yes it is,
but the important things in life are
rarely free from frustration and
occasional setbacks. I truly believe
that the system we have in place is
designed to ensure that our clergy
are set up for success and that our
congregations are provided with
clergy leadership capable of helping
them be fruitful in ministry.
SSSTEPHENTEPHENTEPHEN MMMINISTRYINISTRYINISTRY . . . . . . . . . Provides HELP!Provides HELP!Provides HELP!
We all know that we will face
different degrees of need from
time to time. Someone trapped
in a life-threatening situation
needs immediate help. Some-
one who has a broken bone or a
deep cut would be rushed to
the emergency room.
We know too that we face spir-
itual and emotional needs as
well. Often, the loss of a loved
one changes the circumstances
of life so drastically that it can
create a deep need because of
the pain, grief, and loneliness we
experience. Our church has a
compassionate staff that readily
reaches out at times like these.
We have a caring congregation
that individually reaches out to
those hurting in church and in our
community. We also respond
through ministries like the free
clinic and the church benevolence
fund. In addition, there are groups
of members who have joined to-
gether to be trained to offer a vari-
ety of ways of helping others.
One such group is Stephen Minis-
ters who are Shady Grove mem-
bers who have attended fifty hours
of training to be able to offer walk-
along side confidential Christian
care. This ministry has been a part
of Shady Grove since 1998.
Recently, a Grief Support group
ministry was started and uses ma-
terials from the international or-
ganization called “Griefshare.”
If you find yourself needing to
meet one-on-one with a Stephen
Minister, or you would like to be
part of a Grief Support Group, we
would like to help.
You only need to contact the
church at 746-9073 and ask for
the help you need. The staff
member you talk with will make
immediate contact with the lead-
ers of these ministries who will, in
turn, be in touch with you.
- Frank Simmons
Stephen Ministry
I have no doubt that
those things that I will be do-
ing over the next year will
help me in my own walk with
God and to be a better disci-
ple of Jesus Christ.
I am so very grateful
to the support I have received
at Shady Grove and I look
forward to continuing this
journey as we all strive to
grow together!
- In Christ, Pastor Brad

In 2013, Church Council adopted a written Communion Fund Policy which requires that the Fi-
nance Committee conduct a formal annual review of the activities of the Fund. On February 9, 2015, the
Committee completed its review of 2014 Communion Fund activity and is pleased to make the following
report to Church Council and to the congregation.
The Communion Fund began January 1, 2014 with a carryover balance of $4,421.76 from 2013.
During 2014, the Fund received contributions of $15,785.26, gave assistance to persons in need totaling
$18,321.95, and ended 2014 with a carryover balance of $1,885.07. Contributions to the Communion Fund
for all of 2014 increased 5.6% when compared to 2013. Total assistance given in 2014 increased by 38%.
The following types of assistance were given during 2014:
During 2014 we assisted 14 more individuals than in 2013, providing over $5,000 more in assistance
than in 2013. The increased assistance came about in part because we increased the amount we would pay
annually to any one person/family to $125, up from $100 in prior years. Consequently, our fund balance
has declined significantly. Your additional gifts to the communion fund will allow us to be able to continue
to provide this valued support to those in need during times of hardship. Thank you for your faithful and
continuing support of the Communion Fund.
Contributions to the Communion Fund are received as a special offering on the first Sunday of each
month during worship. Donations may also be made by adding an amount for the Communion Fund to
your regular church offering. The Fund is administered by our Administrative Assistant with the assistance
of our 3 pastors and limited to $125 annually per recipient. To qualify for assistance, recipients need to be
residents of Hanover County or Shady Grove members.
