Managing the aging report is one of the unpleasant duties that come with being the General Manager. In brief, an account that is 45 days past due is subject to suspension.

A Regular Membership that accumulates a balance of $30,000 will be expelled from the Club as will a Social Membership that accumulates a balance of $3,000. A simple phone call to the General Manager can take care of many things if done in a timely manner. It is our goal to solve issues, not see them escalate.

The patio issue seems to be settling down as a result of the recent Presidential letter. I have met with a few of the Ladies to discuss what the Ladies’ Patio should entail. Requests and ideas are as follows; the same overhead covering, flat screen TV, wall water feature, portable fire pit and similar furniture. The next step in the process is to get the estimates and approval from the Board and appropriate agencies. Not a done deal yet, but we are moving in the right direction.

The improvement of the Mixed Grill Patio is a little more extensive and is being worked on. More news to come on this project in the near future.

The course is in great shape and continues to improve daily. The recent heat wave and rain were a summer end bonus. Please continue to care for your greatest asset by filling divots and repairing ball marks on the greens.

The club now owns a portable satellite dish. This Direct TV product allows you to watch TV from any location in the world from a standard briefcase size unit. It has a 17.5” screen or can be linked to any other television. It is available to the membership for rent upon request. Please give me a call if you are interested.

I have been a GM for 20 years and have seen many, many functions held at Clubs. One of the most memorable events a little girl carries with her for the rest of her life is the Father Daughter Ball. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard adult women talk about this event they experienced with their father years after the fact.

Please take advantage of this event on November 19th; this will stay with you and your daughter’s forever. Grandfathers and granddaughters are also perfect for this event.

Oktoberfest

With the weather turned cold and wet, Shady Canyon’s Oktoberfest event didn’t quite go as planned, and was moved indoors. Raphael and his team transformed the Mixed Grill into a proper Bavarian Hofbrauhaus. The music of the oompah band and the aroma of sizzling bratwurst set the tone for a fun evening of stein clinking and dancing!

As the end of the year quickly approaches I thought I’d take this time to recap some of the accomplishments of 2010.

With the help of the dedicated individuals on the Membership Committee and those of you who have sponsored friends, family, and co-workers we have sold 32 Regular and 14 Social Memberships year-to-date! This is an immense increase from 2009 where only 6 Regular and 8 Social Memberships were sold the entire year.

With the implementation of the Float in February, the Resale list has been reduced considerably and the price of Memberships is slowly creeping back up. Hopefully, we can keep this momentum rolling into 2011.

Thank you to everyone who has returned their Roster Update Forms. If you have not done so yet, please fill out and return your Roster form as soon as possible. Those who do not return a form by November 15th will not be listed in the new printed roster. The current form may be found on the Club website. Nicole Fournier Member Relations Director

Family Fall Festival

Another successful year! We had quite the exciting turn out this year at our annual Fall Family Festival. DJ Al really livened up the party by encouraging every child to participate in his festive games. Competitive games this year included the mummy wrap, cake walk, costume contest and many more. Children won an array of prizes ranging from decorative cakes to a large stuffed puppy.

It was especially enjoyable this year to see parents joining in on the fun and volunteering as statues for the “mummy wrap”. Parents also worked together to help their little ones carve pumpkins. In total there were over 100 pumpkins carved!

In addition, children were extremely energized to ride on a Fire truck. The Fire truck departed every 15 minutes and gave a tour around the club house property. Other festivities included carnival games, face painting and a balloon artist! Mark your calendar for next year’s fall festival – the Sunday before Halloween.

Men’s Senior Stroke Play

The Men’s Senior Stroke Play Club Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday, October 23rd and 24th with thirty three players participating. The Stroke Play format is one of the most challenging each year as players must handle counting every stroke until the final putt is holed with the added pressure of competition. Even the most seasoned golfer will say that there is nothing quite like the challenge of pure Stroke Play competition. Players had the option of competing in one or both of the divisions as the same round could be counted for both Net and Gross. In the Net division, day one saw Jeff Shapiro and Mitch Austin finish with solid Net scores of 70 to tie for the lead, one stroke ahead of Bill Bullock. In the Gross division, Gary Voorhest shot a first day score of 78 to lead Bill Bullock and Matt Rocca by one stroke. Bill Bullock came back with a strong Gross 76 for a Net score of 69 to win the Net division by three strokes and the Gross division by two strokes. Jim Largent and Matt Rocca posted strong rounds on day two to finish as runners-up in the Net and Gross divisions respectively. Congratulations to Bill Bullock on winning the 2010 Senior Stroke Play Club Championship and thanks to all of the participants for their support of this year’s event.

Family Scramble

The Family Scramble was held on Sunday, October 17th with twenty kids and twenty parents participating. The 9 hole scramble was a great format for this event because it allowed the kids of all ages to have a great time and get a sense of accomplishment by contributing to the team score. It was also a nice opportunity to enjoy 9 holes for many of the parents who don’t normally have the opportunity to play with their kids. Although it was a small event, it was a chance for the families to spend a fun day together and reaffirm why Shady Canyon is such a great family Club.

Couples’ Member GuestThe 2010 Couples Member/Guest Tournament was held on Sunday, October 3rd with ninety players participating. With the temperature in the mid 70’s, the players kicked off the Event with a Buffet Lunch on the Golf Shop Patio before heading out onto the Golf Course. The format for the Event was Jack & Jill, with one Best Ball of the Ladies and one Best Ball of the Men combined to count for the team score on each hole. Nicole and Eoin Middaugh and their guests Ellen and Terry Stewart won the Low Gross Award with a team score of 144 to hold off Brenda and Ted Swantko and their guests Danna and Roger King by one stroke. Cindy and Ron McMackin and their guests Julie and Leo Bandini won the 2010 Couples Member/Guest Championship with an outstanding Net team score of 123 to win by a comfortable margin. A special thanks to all of the participants who helped make this such an outstanding Event and show each of the guests just what makes Shady Canyon Golf Club so special.

Ladies’ Stroke Play ChampionshipThe Ladies Stroke Play Championship took place on Saturday and Sunday, September 25th and 26th. All of the Ladies did an outstanding job of enduring two days of the most sweltering weather seen at Shady Canyon in several years. Jay Yoon vaulted to the lead in the Net Division on day one with an awesome Net score of 65 to take a seven stroke lead. Jay posted a Net Score of 78 on day two to hold off Debe Lucki, who turned in an impressive Net 68 to finish Runner Up. In the Gross Division, Robyn Puckett posted scorching rounds of 72 and 68 to win the 2010 Gross Title by a comfortable margin. A special thanks to all the participants who braved two days of unrelenting heat to make the 2010 Ladies Stroke Play Championship an event they will not soon forget. Congratulations again to Robyn Puckett and Jay Yoon as the 2010 Gross and Net Champions.

Junior Stroke Play Club ChampionshipThe Girls and Boys Junior Stroke Play Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday, September 18th and 19th with a good turnout of 28 participants. Girls and Boys ranging in age from 9 to 17 took part in an event which exposed them to the thrill of competition with an emphasis on having fun and making friends. The Boys in the Perpetual Division (ages 15-18) had their skill and endurance put to the test as they played 36 holes on Sunday. Robert Deng shot a 1 over par 72 in the morning round from the Gold Tees to lead Max Bidna, who shot an impressive 74, by two strokes. Robert continued his strong play in the afternoon posting a 74 to hold off a fast charging Max Bidna who shot a 76. In the Girls Perpetual Division, Stephanie Cho captured the Girls (13-18) age group. It was two days of fun had by all in an event which is sure to increase in popularity in the coming years as more of our Juniors reach golfing age.

Ladies’ Match Play ChampionshipsThe Ladies Gross Match Play Club Championship began on Tuesday, August 31st and was completed on Wednesday, September 22nd with the Championship match between Robyn Puckett and Marie Gray. It was nice to see all the Ladies challenge themselves by entering this Gross Event. It was an opportunity for all to experience some good competition and test their golf games at the same time. The first round matches were Marie Gray versus Nicole Middaugh, Debe Lucki versus Nancy Webb, Robyn Puckett versus Isako Takada, and Brenda Swantko versus Marta Bhathal. The results were closely contested with Marie Gray moving on to play Debe Lucki and Robyn Puckett advancing to play Marta Bhathal in round 2. Robyn Puckett got on a hot streak to advance to the final match while the Semi-Final match between Marie Gray and Debe Lucki came down to the final shot on the 18th hole with Marie holing a short birdie putt to win and advance to the final. Robyn Puckett continued her great play into the Final and managed to get past a tough opponent in Marie Gray to claim the 2010 Gross Match Play Club Championship. Congratulations to Robyn and to all of the Ladies who participated and helped make this year’s event so wonderful.

“Grape Crush” Ladies’ Guest Day

The first Ladies Guest Day since the re-opening of the golf course was held on Tuesday, September 14th with a wonderful turnout of 96 players participating in the event. The format was the Best Two Balls of each group with a twist. Each player in the group was designated as a specific type of wine grape and there was a wine grape tag on each flagstick (“The Vine”) and whichever player was designated by that type of grape meant their score had to be counted as one of the two scores on the hole. There was also a separate competition called “The Grape Ball” where each group was given a special ball and the object was to play the entire round without losing it. Twelve of the Twenty-Four groups managed to successfully complete the round without losing the “Grape Ball”. Debi Brown and her guests Deborah Jerue, Andrea Kozak, and Karen Brewin had the low net “Grape Ball” score of 70. It was a wonderful day and one of the most successful Ladies Guest Days in recent memory.

Colorful Couples’ TwilightThe Couples Twilight nine hole event was played Sunday, September 12th and was very well attended. The theme was “Wear Your Most Colorful Golf Attire” and the 78 participants did not disappoint, donning outfits that represented just about everything from the last 40 years of golf fashion. The weather cooperated nicely which made for a warm and sunny nine holes and a good time had by all. Each team was made up of 3 couples with each couple playing alternate shot and then recording the lowest net score per sixsome. Cindy and Ron McMackin, together with Sharon and Chris Valli and Caroline and Charles Kavanaugh finished the nine holes with the low net score of 24. Low gross score of 35 went to Sherry and Guy Alexander along with Maureen White and Jerry Choate and Diane and Ken Campbell. It was a wonderful day to celebrate the re-opening of the golf course

Junior Golf CommitteeWe are pleased to announce that the Junior Golf Committee, and especially Mike Davis, have been busy over this past Summer forming the foundation for the Shady Canyon Junior Golf Team and Development Program. This Program is intended to provide a forum for our serious Junior Golfers to compete amongst themselves and represent Shady Canyon in the OC Junior Golf League. This League includes Big Canyon, Santa Ana, Mesa Verde, Newport Beach and Seacliff.

Over the past 6 months more than 25 Juniors, both Girls and Boys ranging in age from 9 to 17, have regularly participated in multiple team gatherings. These include practice time spent on the Driving Range, Putting Green, Short Game areas and on the Golf Course. Further, select Juniors from this group have participated in 3 home and away informal Club matches against Santa Ana and Big Canyon. We are pleased to announce that our Shady Juniors have prevailed in all three matches held to date.

The purpose of these activities were to determine if the Club could assemble a significant group of Juniors who might consider playing together with the approval of their Parents, committing to participate in an organized Club Team. In order to join the League we need the Junior Team to commit to organized practices and represent the Club in Team matches against other Clubs in the OC Junior Golf League. To date we have been overwhelmed by the level of commitment and participation by both Parents and Juniors. We are now preparing to take the necessary next steps to officially form the Team and join the league in 2011. Those steps include:

• Formalize our existing practice group of players into Shady Team Members by hosting a number of qualifying tests.

• Establish a pathway for younger players to “get ready” to join the Team and for older players to qualify to participate on the Team.

• Formally join the OC Junior League. Tournament play will commence in 2011.

• Identify a Team name and colors for uniforms.• Set up a Calendar of Events for 2011 for Junior Team Members. All details

will be advertised on the bi-monthly Junior Newsletter included in the weekly e-mail blast and in-turn placed on the Shady Canyon web-site.

• Setup additional Home and Away dates with other local Private Clubs over and above the Summer Team Matches in the Spring and Fall 2011.

• Establish a Budget to support Team costs which would include Uniform, Golf Hats and potentially Team Golf Bags.

• Establish Fund-raisers within the Club including Junior Golf Challenges and a Team Dinner.

• Hold an Open House this Winter for all Juniors and Parents interested in participating in the 2011 Junior Golf Program.

With the help of the Board and the Members we will achieve our goal to develop a competitive Junior Golf Program at Shady Canyon that over the years will grow and become widely known as the pre-emanate Junior Golf Program in Orange County.

Junior Team Takes Big Canyon at Home

The Shady Canyon Junior Team posted a third consecutive victory in their home match with Big Canyon CC on Saturday October 16th. Both teams battled in less than perfect weather as it started to rain at the completion of play. The win was the closest match to date with a score of 100 to 94 in the par point format. Thanks to all the parents that helped and kids that participated. Also thanks to Robert Pang and Sandy Huber of Big Canyon for organizing the Big Canyon team for the off season match. The away match with Big Canyon CC is slated for Saturday November 6th at 2:00pm.

Junior Team Play match vs. Santa Ana Country Club

The Shady Canyon Junior Golf Team hosted a match with the Juniors from Santa Ana Country Club on Saturday, September 25th. All kids except the age 11 and under group walked the golf course and survived the intense heat. The Shady Canyon participants were Robert Deng, Max Bidna, Conor Hedigan, Jack LeBeau, Brandon Tse, Christian Coufos, Will LeBeau, and Dylan Conway. The Shady Canyon kids all contributed to a winning score of 113 to 91 over Santa Ana using the par point system of scoring. Thanks to all of the kids who participated to help make our first season of Junior Team Play a success. A special thanks also to team captain Mike Davis for organizing the event and to Ray Carrasco and Lynn Stone for shuttling the players and providing drinks on the golf course.

I am pleased to let to you all know that the handicap program is moving along very well and in the right direction. We have been overwhelmed by positive feedback about the new cards, hole allocations and handicap procedures.

As you know, the committee has been randomly selecting days to review scorecards and we have seen a dramatic increase in the postings. I have to admit I was a little skeptical at first as only about 40% of golfers on the tee sheet posted their scores. But...we now see a significant rise in postings from the first weeks opening. On average a whopping 70% of the Members are posting!! But we still have to get that other 30% over to the computer.

Here is the break down from randomly selected days:

• Sunday, August 29th: 40% of all golfers DID NOT POST • Saturday, September 4th: 26% of all golfers DID NOT POST • Saturday, September 11th: 22% of all golfers DID NOT POST

As you can see we are going in the right direction.

We have seen some repeat offenders and you will be receiving a gentle reminder if your scores are not appearing on the computer. If we see a consistency in NOT POSTING you will be notified and given a tournament handicap for future events.

You may ask what the big deal is....well what’s at stake is our Clubs integrity. How we are perceived as a group on the outside and here within by our peers. It is my goal as the Handicap Chairman and the Handicap Committee to be able to regale in the fact that we have an honest constituency and that we are who we say we are, good or bad.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and thanks for your commitment to Shady Canyon.

My warmest regards,

Ed BlatchfordHandicap Golf Commitee Chair

As we move into the cooler nights ahead, we can expect some different playing conditions this year.

The fairway turf conversion to a non-overseeded Bermuda will play faster than our past years overseeded playing surface. In other words, expect your tees shots to go farther. The warm season Bermuda turf will slow down its growth and even go into dormancy once we start to experience frost conditions. The fairways will go off color and you’ll notice a decrease in divot recovery in the fairways. This condition is temporary and once we begin to warm up, in late February and March, the Bermuda will break dormancy and start growing again.

After the wonderful 2” rain in October, the fairways have experienced the establishment of a large percentage of Poa annua. This will create an uneven playing surface with the dormant Bermuda and also compete with the new Bermuda that we established during the conversion. It will be very important for the success of the project to “clean up” the fairways with a post emergent herbicide such as Revolver.

By removing the undesirable cool season grasses we will move closer to our goal of having one type of turf in our fairways. Another huge benefit of removing the Poa now is the reduction of seed that would be tracked onto the greens by foot traffic. The more we can do to reduce the seed bank of Poa annua the more successful we will be with keeping it out of our greens. I just wanted to prepare the Membership for the upcoming winter season. We will get through this first season and see improvement moving forward with our new warm season Bermuda fairways.

May all your putts by one!

ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRDContributed by: Steve Zarate

One of the most common birds in our area, not only out on the course but also in our backyards, is the Anna’s Hummingbird. The Anna’s “Hummer” (bird talk for hummingbird) is about 4 inches long, medium-sized for hummers, with a straight bill. It has a green back and

flanks and a pale grey chest and belly. The adult male has an iridescent rose-red crown and throat (gorget). Anna’s is the only North American hummingbird species with a red crown. Anna’s females and juveniles have a green crown, a grey throat with some red markings and a grey chest and belly. Well-known for feeding on nectar from flowers, Anna’s also actively consume small insects caught in flight (they aim for the flying insect and then open their beaks very wide to catch their prey). That technique has a greater success rate than trying to aim the end of a long beak at the insect. While collecting nectar they also assist in plant pollination.

The female builds a cup-like nest in a shrub or tree, sometimes in vines or on wires. The nest is built of plant material, including lichen and other mosses, and often lined with down or animal hair. The nest materials are bound together with spider silk, which gives the nest the ability to expand as the eggs (typically two) are hatched and the chicks grow. They nest mostly from January to April.

There are about 340 species of hummingbird and they only reside in the Western Hemisphere or New World. There are only 17 species of hummers that occur regularly in the U.S.; 6 of these are present in California. One of the unique attributes of hummingbirds is that they can fly backwards; the only group of birds able to do so.

One characteristic we notice about hummingbirds is their bright shiny iridescent plumage. A feature of this coloring is that it does not necessarily come from pigmentation in the feather structure, but instead from prism-like cells within the top layers of the feathers. When light hits these cells, the angle of light reflects back to the observer in varying degrees of intensity. The result is that, merely by shifting position, a muted-looking bird will suddenly become fiery red or vivid green. Only male hummers have the brilliant iridescent throat feathers. They use these to display to one another. Females find it attractive, and other males are repelled. Male hummers are VERY feisty and territorial and the red feathers are part of this territorial display. So they have two functions-attracting a female and defending their territory.

Other hummer trivia:• Their hearts beat over 1200 beats per minute in flight, close to 500 beats at

rest and less than 50 beats when in torpor (their sleep mode)• They beat their wings 20 to 80 times a second in regular flight and about 200

times a second during courtship flight• They eat their weight in nectar daily• A group of hummingbirds has many collective nouns, including a “bouquet”,

“glittering”, “ hover”, “shimmer”, and “tune” of hummingbirds
