    FROMTHEEDITOR. . .BYADAMJURY[ [email protected]]

Wow this issue is really, really late. What can Isay? Real life, real jobs, real friends, real committments;everything cuts into the time available to work on TheShadowrun Supplemental, and for a lot of the last year

the magazine has simply been getting the short end ofthe stick.

There's some pretty good news this time around, though. A lot of small tasks that I've been meaningto do for ages have been finished, so I'll outline thembriefly here.

MESSAGEBOARDSWe have a set of message boards available at

http:/tss.dumpshock.com/forum/ they're mostlyaimed for discussion of the magazine and for gatheringsubmissions for regular features such as The ClutteredDatastore and Tai's Magical Goodies, but they canalso be used for general Shadowrun discussion. Weencourage potential writers to drop by the forums andpost article ideas.

ANNOUNCEMENTMAILINGLISTSWe now have an announcement mailing list you

can subscribe at http://tss.dumpshock.com/lists.html the list will be low traffic (likely no more than a singlepost per month) and will be used for announcementsand other special posts only. Of course, we won't sell

your email address or do anything malicious withit, and like any good mailing list you'll be able tounsubscribe anytime.

    CONTRIBUTEThe Shadowrun Supplemental exists largely

due to the generous contribution of Shadowrunfans throughout the years. You can be a part of themagazine submission guidelines are available at

    http://tss.dumpshock.com/guidelines.html

WizKids, Inc has sole ownership of the names, logo, artwork, marks, photographs, sounds, audio, videoand/or any proprietary material used in connection with the game Shadowrun. WizKids, Inc has grantedpermission to The Shadowrun Supplemental to use such names, logos, artwork, marks and/or anyproprietary materials for promotional and informational purposes on its website but does not endorse, andis not affiliated with The Shadowrun Supplemental in any official capacity whatsoever. of material is copyright 2004 Adam Jury

DONATIONSSomething else we've been intending to add for a

long time is a donations page. We recognize that noteveryone has the time or interest in writing material

for the magazine, yet we also hope that some of thosepeople may want to support our endeavours in otherways.

Of course, you likely want to know what thedonated money will be used for and we don'tblame you. However, we're honestly not quite sureyet, because we have very little idea how much moneywill be donated. We could make elaborate plans, butthe time spent making those plans would be wastedif the cash flow turned out to be much lower than weexpected. So, for the time we're taking a wait-and-see

attitude before deciding exactly what to do with anydonations. Ideally, we'll be spreading the donationsamong three primary areas:

Buying software and registering shareware asnecessary for the magazine's construction.

Paying for promotional costs, including flyers atconventions and other advertising.

Moving towards compensation for all levels ofcontributors: authors, editors, and artists.

    SEATTLE2063

It hurts just to think about Seattle 2063right now. However, I can tell you with great authority honest that it will come out in 2004.

    THESHADOWRUNSUPPLEMENTAL#202004, as well!

    THESHADOWRUNSUPPLEMENTAL1997Probably not 2004. Sorry!

INCLOSINGThanks for reading and being a fan of the magazine

your support through the years is the primary thingkeeping us going.

Living on the Edgepresents a variety of lifestylesbuilt with the Detailed Lifestyles and Lifestyles Edgesand Flaws systems published in FanPro's SprawlSurvival Guide. In some cases, these lifestyles ignorethe FanPro suggestion of limiting Edges and Flawsto five per lifestyle. Some new Edges and Flaws wereused in the creation of some of these lifestyles seep. 9 for full descriptions. Also, Final Monthly Lifestyle

Costs are always rounded up to the nearest 25

MECHANICSSHOPThis site is perfect for a riggers vehicle facility.

The neighborhood is not the nicest, being in themiddle of an industrial park right next to the highway, but the landlord is really very nice and is desperate tokeep the place rented.

Note: This is only the site for the riggers (or weaponspecialists) facility. The actual facility or personallifestyle must be rented (or purchased) separately.

AREA SQUATTER(1PT)In the middle of an industrial park.

COMFORTS MIDDLE(3PT)The power and water are pretty reliable.

ENTERTAINMENT STREET(0PT)You came here to work, not goof around. Dont

you find engines and transmissions fun enough?FURNISHINGS STREET(1PT)

Like a mechanics shop is going to have muchelse? A beat up couch to crash on after those late-night repair sessions.

SECURITY MIDDLE(3PT)Fairly good considering the neighborhood.

Decent locks, night watch, and its not like someone isgoing to want to boost the crappy trid or old couch.

SPACE LUXURY(5PT)Big enough to house a vehicle facility.

SUBURBIAAh yes, the suburbs. Sometimes it can be useful

to hide out in a nice, quiet house, in a nice, quietneighborhood. Since all the houses and streets lookthe same, sometimes its pretty easy to get lost.Maybe the runners can bring a little excitement to thedoldrums. And you can be guaranteed if they do, it

will be talked about for years to come.

BARRENSSTREETCLINICThe local clinic is well liked by the locals. They

like knowing theres a place nearby that they can goto when they get hurt or when a family member isill, and they dont take kindly to anyone who tries tomess it up. Of course, all the local gangers try to stayon the places good side... this means they also hangout there on regular occasions.

Everything barring access to rooms has beenremoved or altered to make it as easy as possible foremergency cases to get inside in a hurry. NOSYNEIGHBORS(0.05 PTS)The characters neighbors take it upon themselves

to be involved in the business of every one else in thecommunity. The neighbors will come to investigateanything strange or peculiar going on in theneighborhood, but not out of concern for community, but for their own titillation.

Nosy Neighbors must succeed a Willpower (4)test to resist investigating, and will only try to resistinvestigating if asked or threatened not to. Treatthem as having an Intelligence of 3 for purposesof noticing anything that might be consideredunusual or noteworthy, Willpower 2 for resisting theurge to investigate, and Stealth 3 for being noticedthemselves. This Flaw can be taken in conjunctionwith other Neighbors Edges and Flaws, eachpertaining to a specific set of neighbors.

Country livin is quite a bit different than thesprawl. The benefits and drawbacks are differentmore nature in both the good and bad way. You getfreedom and space, but you also get wild animals, insects, and more exposure to the weather. You getprivacy, but you also get isolation. This is the waythe other half livesits easy to forget since the latestaction-packed news is all about the cities and theurban go-go lifestyle. If you ever get tired of that, though, its worth knowing your other options.

These rules are fully compatible with the DetailedLifestyles rules on pp. 127-144 of FanPros SprawlSurvival Guide(SSG), except where noted.

paracritters, natural threats like floods or volcanos, and massive swarms of disease-bearing insects. Life is

constantly threatened here, and almost no one goes infor anything but extremely brief forays.

Examples:A valley of rabid hyenas, yellow fever-carrying mosquitos, and ferocious weekly lightningstorms and wildfires.

E ZONE(0 POINTS)The place has just one of the above problems

either hostile animal life, epidemic disease, orunstable natural events.

Examples: Territorial lion mating grounds, a

swamp ridden with parasites and diseases of allkinds, or the nastier parts of the Australian Outback(rabid para-dingos!).

D ZONE(1 POINT)The animal and insect life is dangerous, but

more opportunistic than territorial. If youre weak orwounded, here they come, but they wont go out oftheir way to consume the strong and well-organized.Natural disasters occasionally happen, but its not

inherent in the landscape. People generally avoidthis area and view it as dangerous, but the strong andskilled can get by just fine.

Examples:African plains with a varied ecosystem,Florida swamps, the better parts of the Australian

Outback, the better parts of the Amazon.C ZONE(2 POINTS)

Its wild still, but the ecosystem is mostlybalanced so creatures get what they need. You canhike around and enjoy nature, but take precautionswith your scent, food and waste to avoid attention.Watch for poisonous animals and large carnivores.Wear bug spray and dont drink the water untreated.Weather can be harsh at times.

Examples : Yosemite , most of the deepbackcountry in North America.

B ZONE(3 POINTS)Mildly wild, you could get into trouble here

if you do something stupid like go out withoutany water. On the other hand, a well-stocked hikercould get by just fine, and even a poorly stockedone can probably make it through the night untilrescue. Camping and living is comfortable evenlong-term. No major predators, but plenty of wildinconveniences like raccoons and non-disease-bearing mosquitos and ticks.

Examples:Most of rural North America, outsideof towns, state parks, recreation areas that are well-visited, and especially idyllic natural lands.

    A ZONE(4 POINTS)No threatening animals, comfortable temperature

range, and edible food grows wild in some places.Water sources available year-round. Easy campingyear round, and easy farming or animal-husbandry.

Examples: Farm country and vacation-land inareas of California, France and Chile.

AA ZONE(5 POINTS)Only the cutest and most enjoyable creatures live

herebunnies, deer, and songbirds. Clean spring wateravailable year-round, no harsh weather, just the right

balance of seasons. Extremely fertile ground allows aperson to eat from the land without any farmingtonsof fruit, fish, berries, and vegetables grow naturally.

    Examples:Pristine nature-preserve property inselect locations.

AAA ZONE(6 POINTS)Known in some circles as Nature Plus!, this is

the engineered Eden. Start with a perfect locationgreat weather, just the right balance of enjoyablewildlife, no pollution. Genetically engineer thewildlife to be even cuter, more friendly, and moreuseful. Engineer or import just the right plant species

for a perfect biosphere ecosystem. Inject the soil withvital nutrients. Enhance the food-bearing plants, and eliminate most species of insects, leaving onlybutterflies and other beautiful types to pollinateand regulate the ecosystem.

Examples:Artificial islands off the coast of theUAE or in the South Pacific, biospheres, mythologyand legend.

SPACEIn terms of land area, rural places usually have a

lot of land around the structure itself. The structureis usually somewhat bigger than a comparableurban structure because there are fewer buildingsize constraints.

STREETEQUIVALENT(0 POINTS)No land in addition to the structure you live in.

You are the rare exception in the rural lifestylejustenough land to set up shop. You live in a tent, a lean-to, or even a fully-enclosed one-room shack the sizeof a tent.

    SQUATTEREQUIVALENT(1 POINT)You have a quarter of an acre to a half-acre

lotroomy by suburban standards, but you fill it uppretty quick once you spread your stuff around theyard. Your house is about 50 sq. meters, just a coupleof rooms.

LOWEQUIVALENT(2 POINTS)An acre of land to call your own and a 100 sq.

meter house on it with a couple of small bedroomsand a porch. Not bad.

MIDDLEEQUIVALENT(3 POINTS)Two to five acres and a nice 200 sq. meter house

make for fun and comfortable country living. Youcan take a nice little hike around your land, and ifthere are trees, you cant see your neighbors. Privacyand a fair bit of quiet, plus some wildlife calls yourland home. You probably have a shed, barn, or otheroutbuilding, if not two or three.

HIGHEQUIVALENT(4 POINTS)Country estate with six to 20 acres, maybe a

pond, river, or other small feature, and space forfarming or ranching operations. A large 400 sq. meterhome makes a place for the whole familyincludingcousins, aunts, grandparents, and miscellaneouspeople you never knew. Some number of sheds,

barns, garages, stables, and other out-buildings, pluspossibly a small guest or servants cottage, completethe setup.

LUXURYEQUIVALENT(5 POINTS)Massive, plantatio- or nature preserve style

living. Dozens or maybe even hundreds, of acresgive you the sense of owning endless land. You couldwalk for hours on your own land and never seeanother soul. Ranching, farming, corporate facilities, your own airport... you can hide all kinds of stuff on

your land if you want. Unfortunately, you also dontalways notice right away when someone else hidesstuff on your land.

SECURITYEmphasis is a little different because the threats

are different. Only the really wealthy or paranoidneed to lock their doors in the country, and an alarmsystem is sort of a waste if youre two hours from thesheriffs office (unless youre rich enough to affordprivate security). On the other hand, a good fence ora pack of outside dogs is needed to keep the crittersin check.

STREETEQUIVALENT(0 POINTS)Its just you and the critters, chummer. Hope

    theyre friendly or youre tough.

SQUATTEREQUIVALENT(1 POINT)Youve got a dog or three to scare em off. The

critters still come around, but they dont breed onyour land at least. For the bugs, you throw somepoison out there every now and then and drop morefocused bug bombs on the hives when they get toobig. You try to remember to keep the doors closed tothe house so they dont just crawl right inand youhave doors that can close.

LOWEQUIVALENT(2 POINTS)Youve either got a closed fence around your

dwelling, or you keep a few dogs outside all the time.No creature is going to just walk up to the house. Forthe insects, the house is well-sealed and the materials

  • 8/10/2019 Shadowrun the Shadowrun Supplemental 019

    12/1812

are treated to prevent infestation. You bug-bomb asneeded on top of that, but you dont need to do itvery often.

MIDDLEEQUIVALENT(3 POINTS)A real fence surrounds your property, or an

ultrasonic scatter system to drive off pests. Petsalso patrol your land, and youve cut back some ofthe bushes and tall grasses so there are less placesfor critters to hide. The house is well-sealed andclimate-controlled to keep the bugs out, and even theunderside of the house and the attic is sealed, poison-treated, and maintained with frequent sweeps to keepit bug-free. You keep a cistern with back-up waterand maybe some stored food in case of temporaryloss of services or outside access. Oh, and yourdoors actually lock on the off-chance a metahumanapproaches your place.

HIGHEQUIVALENT(4 POINTS)Some serious technology protects your place. Thehouse is built to keep things out, the land is groomedand maintained to be friendly to the creatures youlike and useless to the ones you dont, and some of theplants are the genetically-engineered kind that attractless bugs and grow better. On the perimeter, youveset up the plants and landscape to serve as naturalbarriers to entry, supplementing your fence system. You have a real urban-style security system too, withan alarm system and a company that actually knows

how to get to your house if needed. Your pets roamthe land and are well-trained to intercept intruders inthe manner which you would prefer. Your house hasback-up water and food for a long time, and back-uppower for a short time (a few days).

LUXURYEQUIVALENT(5 POINTS)The land is completely groomed to your tastes

and convenience, including moving or makingwhole hills to suit your security needs. All the plantshave been chosen for species and location with themindful intention of controlling access to your land

and the flow of plants, animals, insects, and weatheron your land. Drones or exotic pets (or both!) patrolyour property, and metahuman guards do too, usingoff-road vehicles to roam your lot as needed. Yourhouse is totally self-sufficient either all the time, or formonths if needed.

CRIMEMetahuman crime is rare in the countrynot only

are there few people, but its hard to find and scope atarget. Even in a dark cabin in the woods, who knowsif the old man inside has a shotgun or not?

More problematic is invasions from the wildlife(usually looking for food) or insects (usually buildinga colony in or on the house). Use the Burglary rules(p. 135, SSG) for an urban lifestyle, but a roll thatwould indicate crime indicates a wildlife invasionor insect colonization, instead. The damage to yourlifestyle is caused by these creatures and the cost toevict them.

CONTINUOUSUPKEEPLiving in the wilderness presents some changes

to the normal buying or renting scheme, as landlords, city taxes, and zoning issues often arent present.

Theoretically, one can build a cabin in the woods andpay no rent. Continous upkeepfor game mechanicpurposesis used to reflect raised costs for gettingbuilding materials, food, and other goods delivered.Alternatively, the character may be legitimatelybuying or renting the land from whomever owns it.

DEFAULTEDGESANDFLAWSA rural location automatically has the Lifestyle

Edges and Flaws listed on the Default Edges andFlaws Table, so a rural location has a default Lifestyle

Cost Multiplier (p. 137, SSG) of 0.20. Players shouldfeel free to add more Edges and Flaws to theirlifestyle, and games that do not use the LifestyleEdges and Flaws rules should ignore this section.

player to choose edges or flaws that are not suitablefor the location, or are inherent to living away from thecity. A suggested list of Edges and Flaws to disallowis on the Disallowed Edges and Flaws Table.

There are some Edges and Flaws that, whentaken, disallow you from taking an Edge or Flawwith the opposite effect (for example, MotivatedService and Disgruntled Service.) I have a few runs under mybelt. Ive worked for Johnson afterJohnson and with dozens of otherrunners. Ive made a few mistakes,

but my hoop is still intact so I believethat I can offer some worthwhileobservations and advice. Operating

under the assumption that folks arein this biz to make a few nuyen,it surprises me how poorly somepeople handle their hard-earnedcred. What follows are a few financialpointers to help stretch your budget.

    OWNPROPERTYI cannot stress this enough.

Having an apartment (or even anempty warehouse to squat in) isimportant. Not only does it give you

a hideout if you attract some undueattention, it gives you a certainamount of stability. It cuts yourmonthly expenses and helps keepyou from living hand-to-mouth allthe time. Being able to turn downa runwithout worrying aboutdigging through dumpsters forsoyburgershelps you negotiatewith Johnsons and walk away frompotentially disastrous jobs.

BUYNEWYeah, this post is supposed to be

about saving money, but in the longrun paying full price for things likevehicles, communication gear andgenerally anything legal extendstheir lifespan enough to save money. After all, whats cheaper: runningthrough half a dozen junkyardRapiers in as many months, orspringing for a new one that will

probably outlast your career? Ifyoure buying gear for legal use, itpays to take advantage of warranties, rebates and special offers.

BUYUSEDOn the other hand, when youre

buying toys that fell off a truck andusing them for extemporaneousactivities at 02:00, its better to

go with used goods. Equipment(especially the delicate stuff) doesntlast very long when exposed tothings like liquid immersion, extremetemperatures, and pieces of flyinglead. Save the money and buy used,if you can find a reputable source.

Another advantage of buying usedis the item has a history. Even if youend up ditching it under questionablecircumstances, it may end up beingtraced back to the guy who ownedit before you. Another disadvantageof buying used is the item has ahistory. Someonemaybe severalsomeonesused to own it, and theymay want it back. As always, if itlooks too good to be trueValor

    its probably an Aztechnology

prototype complete with all sorts ofnasty bugs.Strider

    STOCKPORTFOLIOSYou have certainly heard about

the joys of owning corp stock andall the fringe benefits it incurs, suchas regular financial reports and

being privy to shareholder info. Ifyou can, try to find a corp or brokerthat will offer you a DRP (Dividend

Reinvestment Plan) account. Youhave to put money in each month,

bu t th e mini mum is un de r 50 0nuyen, depending on the stock andyour broker. It doesnt cost much, helps launder your dirty cred andgains consistently even if you happento cause a few accidents around thecorps youve invested in.

    ASKFOREXPENSESWhenever you negotiate with

a Johnson, try to get him to tack onplus expenses to whatever figureyou come up with. It covers yourhoop in a worst-case scenario, andits low risk for the Johnson sincehe doesnt have to pay any extranuyen if you botch the job. Its nofun spending 30k to earn 25k. Bewarned, though: its not very likelya Johnson will cover your expenses

as well as give you an advance,so weigh the cost of the run itselfagainst the cost of the Johnsonscrewing you afterward.

Smart Johnsons will only cover yourexpenses if you buy the replacementgear from a fence they recommenddriving business to their favoritefences. On the upside, this puts youcloser to a potential new contact. Onthe downside, your regular fixer maynot be happy that youre spending thatcash elsewhere.Bowey

    PAYMENTINSCRIPThis only works when dealing

with a corporate Johnson, andusually only then when he canget scrip from the corp he says

he works for. Obviously, mostJohnsons dont want to disclosewho they work forbut somedont mind, and some will giveyou scrip from another corp just tothrow you off.

Since a corp prints its own scripand you have to spend it with thesame corp, you can possibly doubleyour payment and get twice thegoods, while the corp only incurs a

fraction of the costeveryone wins.Remember to get a temporary corp IDin the deal, otherwise youll be luckyto break even on the black market.

PAYMENTINGOODSWhile it works under the same

principle as the last tip (more payfor you, less cost for the Johnson andhis employers), there are a few keydifferences. First of all, your Johnsondoesnt have to be a corp suit to get

goods, so you can use this strategymore often. On the other hand, youd better have a good workingrelationship with Mr. J if you wantto do this. Damaged goods, trackingdevices, explosives and all sorts ofugly surprises all find their wayinto runners hands. Dont acceptequipment that you dont knowhow to appraise and use.

controversial since before the turn of the century:colonization of the ocean floor. With l ittlecompetition, Ocean Star finds themselves relativelysafe in the markets of underwater habitats, personalunderwater exploration technology, and bothmilitary and civilian submersible craft technology.Well-known for their construction of the SeattleBay Oceanic Institute, they are typically alwayscontacted for any type of underwater constructionranging from automotive tunnels to extravagantglass-domed underwater hotels.

    CORPORATE

    STRUCTURE

Ocean Star has only one facility that houses itsadministrative offices and manufacturing plant alongthe coast just west of the CAS Naval Air Station. Thecompany owns a large fleet of construction supportships, which it keeps docked at a nearby harbor whenit is not at sea.

Administrative structure is relatively loose withthe CEO, Terri Jalender, heading up a small teamof ten engineers in research and development. TheOcean Star creative process typically involves Terri

and her team sharing ideas in an immersed VRenvironment where they design as they go.

CEO Terri Jalender is a graduate of MIT&T witha degree in Structural Engineering with an emphasisin alternative structures and a minor in marinebiology. Her ideas in underwater architecture areamong the most innovative in the world. With someinitial financial assistance from her university interncompany, Atlantic Renovation Society, she foundedOcean Star.

Heh, relatively loose. Judging by the high turnover

rate and some very public and heated disputes betweenTerri and her second-in-command Conrad Thomas, Ithink loose is way off. From what Ive heard, businessisnt so hot for Ocean Star and Jalender is having somehot ideas on how to boost sales that Thomas just aintthrilled about.Dixie Snake

your woes! Those pestilent creatures have met theirmatch with one of natures oldest creations, a touchof metahuman gengineering, and patented DragonMagicTM. The Devil Stalker is the ideal snake to letloose on any infested facility!

Worried about insurance rates or employeehealth? Dont be! The Devil Stalker has a built-inaversion to metahuman pheromones! That means noone will even see the Stalker as it makes its nightlypatrol. Not only that, your insurance rates will dropwith reduced danger of rodent-carried diseases andincreased crop production. Plus, the Devil Stalker isguaranteed to live for ten years and is completelyimmune to normal reptile sicknesses.

The Stalker cannot breed, is non-venomous and isresistant to VITAS I&II. Tests have shown that VITAS

III is carried in only 1% of the test subjects. Trackingdevices are recommended for large facilities.

Funny they dont mention the Demon Hunter, whichfeature an aversion to a specially-engineered pheromone not a metahuman one. They just give a pheromonereleasing badge that doubles as a security pass to theguards and wage slaves. The snakes are built to beconstantly hungry and aggressive... Omnitech laboratories, the BRiC (Biological RodentControl) Spider, is a variant of the Trapdoor(Stasimopus robertsi) spider. Altered to increase thearachnids size, diet, and mobility, the BRiC cannotleave its manufactured nest. The spider lives for oneyear and can consume over one thousand rats, mice,or other small rodents in that time. The BRiC Spidercannot breed and is non-polluting.

The spider manufactures a silk field around itsnest, which it uses to sense an approaching rodent.Once in range the BRiC leaps out with startlingspeed and strikes the pest with its potent venom, then drags it back beneath the trapdoor to devour atleisure. Waste is unprocessed in the spiders body, eventually leading to toxic blood poisoning.
