Parsha SummaryKi Tavo • When You Come InDeuteronomy 26:1-29:8

The Bedside Torah: Wisdom, Visions, and Dream Rabbi Bradely Shavit Artson

Ki-Tavo begins with the offer of prayers to be recited by farmers - one when bringing the first fruit offerings to the Temple, and the other when giving the tithe to the poor every three years. These are the only exam-ples of fixed liturgy addressing God, the words of which are established by the Torah.

All of the details of the laws are now enumerated, and Moses offers a conclusion to the lengthy series of rules and legislation completed. These are more than mere rules; they are the structure of a comprehensive re-lationship between the people Israel and God. In fulfilling these mitzvot, Israel “shall be, as God promised, a holy people to Adonai your God.”

There are three ceremonies to be performed once Israel has entered the land:

1. Erecting stone tablets with the text of the Torah, building an altar, and performing sacrifices at Mount Ebal.

2. The standing of the tribes on Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, thereto proclaim the blessings and curses that the covenant can evoke.

3. The listing of the punishments by the Levites when people sin inways difficult to try in human courts; the people are to affirm thosepunishments.

The parashah then proceeds with a lengthy description of the bless-ings awaiting Israel if it obeys God’s law and lives by the terms of the cov-enant, and an even more extensive treatment of the punishments which will follow the violation of that covenant.

This section concludes the second address: “These are the terms of the covenant which Adonai commanded Moses to conclude with the Isra-elites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant which God had made with them at Horeb.”

Moses’ third address urges ratification of the additional covenant: “Therefore observe faithfully all the terms of this covenant, that you may succeed in all you undertake.”
