Rosh Chodesh gathering July 23

We don’t typically hold Rosh Cho-desh gatherings over the summer. But we had such a lovely time last summer at our mikveh experience and Rosh Chodesh observance at

Reba Lindsay’s backyard pool in Mountain Home that we’re going to do it again this summer. We will gather on Sunday, July 23

rd, from 3-6 pm, to mark

Rosh Chodesh Av. Reba’s home is at 1050 N. 9th East in

Mountain Home, and we’ll carpool from the synagogue (we already have a driver with a 7-passenger van); we’ll meet in the parking lot just before 2 pm and head out. At Reba’s, where there’s a heated backyard pool, we’ll gather, visit, nosh, re-examine the tradition of mikveh immersion, and wel-come the new month. Rosh Chodesh Av is a time that conjures up a mixture of conflicting moods: The joy of Rosh Chodesh and the renewal of the moon, mixed with the sadness and tragedy that fall during the month of Av, the month of the destruction of the Temple. Here’s a quote from the Orthodox Union about Rosh Chodesh Av: “Is it contradictory to say Hallel on the day that ushers in a sad period? No. Being Jewish often means being able to see the bright side of sad times, and not forget the sad note at happy times.” So we’ll gather and share joy and togetherness, even at a time of many tragic events, both in ancient times and in our own world now. Reba’s backyard is fenced, but our privacy may not be 100 percent complete; accordingly, please bring a swimsuit and towel if you'd like to immerse. If not, you can participate by immersing fingers or toes - no swimsuit required. Please RSVP to Reba at (845) 853-3569, or to Betsy Russell at [email protected]. Please bring a dish or beverage to share. And please arrive promptly at the synagogue parking lot, as we’ll pull out right at 2 to arrive at Reba’s by 3. Join us if you can, and have a chodesh tov - a good month!

Wave at the Gardeners!

When you come and go at CABI, are you in a hurry? I’d like to encourage you to slow down when you are present on our sacred grounds, including our parking lot. Let’s make this a waving place! Waving means seeing. Seeing means acknowl-edging—acknowledging that you know faces, cars, and activities. Waving means that you see gar-deners weeding and watering, children crossing to the side-walk, and elders who might walk slowly or with canes or walkers. Waving means that these peo-ple also see you. If we see, acknowledge and know each other, we can avoid accidents and build a stronger community.

Summertime Bat Mitzvahs Alison Block will celebrate becoming a Bat Mitzvah on

Saturday, August 12 at CABI.

Rachel Block will celebrate becoming a Bat Mitzvah on

Saturday, August 19 at CABI.

Please join the Block family in August as we celebrate this life

cycle together. Watch the e-blast for more information.

CABI Staff Summer Work Schedule

I t’s July already! Rabbi Dan Fink’s Sabbatical has flown by faster than he, or any of the rest of us, could have antici-

pated. We hope that it has been as rewarding for him as it has certainly proven to be for his con-gregation. We’ve managed, with surprising ease, to provide lead-ership for all our regular Shabbat evening and services, for our holi-days and events, and for our eve-ryday operations. Thanks to the Sabbatical Committee members, who covered all contingencies; to our wonderful staff, who stepped up to take on additional du-ties; and to all of you who allowed your name to be listed as the con-

tact persons in the event that unexpected, or foreseeable-but-not-scheduled, events happened.

As we realized with Rabbi Dan’s prior 2 Sabbaticals, our con-gregation is capable, dedicated, and willing to do what is needed to continue the path of our Jewish life without missing a beat while our Rabbi is away on a much-deserved break. This Sabbatical has offered us an opportunity to grow, to learn from each other, to do what we never really thought we could do, and to enjoy it all, to boot! We will welcome Rabbi Dan back to our halls in August, and we know he will hit the ground running, a bit more energetic and hopefully en-riched from his time off. Meanwhile, follow our Rabbi’s adven-tures on his blog: "At Home and On the Road," http://rabbidanfink.blogspot.com. Thanks for your help, mem-bers of our CABI community. Stay safe, Rabbi Dan. See you in a month!

Nina Spiro will be off July and the first two weeks of Au-gust.

Beth Harbison will be out of the office, but working and replying to emails through July 16. She will be in the office July 17-31. She will be out of the office and unable to com-municate August 1-22.

Nemmie Stieha, our Music Educator, will be gone until August 22. This summer she will be working with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at Camp Kalsman. While at camp she will be keeping a personal blog of her adventures. To follow Nemmie go to NemmieMusic.worldpress.com. She cannot wait to bring back new melodies and lots of memories.

Kat Dellamater will be off the month of July. She will be checking her email once per week. She will resume her nor-mal hours in August, working Monday, Wednesday and Fri-day.

Miki Goodwin and Pettra Pollack prepare to lead Shabbat evening service.

O n Thursday, June 15, an hour before we sold our first Deli Days sandwich, the Rotary Grand Plaza was dedicated in Julia Davis Park. The vision of Diane Davis Myklegard,

a great-granddaughter of Julia Davis, the Rotary Grand Plaza is a new gathering place just east of the Rose Garden, on the walking path from the Boise Art Museum to Zoo Boise. The Plaza contains almost fifty monuments dedicated to architectural icons from Boi-se’s history, some of them no longer standing. On the southeast perimeter of the Plaza, you can now admire a four-foot pillar featuring an 1899 photograph of CABI’s historic synagogue building, originally known as Congregation Beth Israel. Money for the pillar was raised privately, but all of us at CABI and in the wider community will benefit for years to come. Our beloved synagogue has a place in this “who’s who” of historic buildings, sending the message that Jews have lived and thrived in Boise for a very long time.

Teshuvah and Tikkun Olam: An environmental series in anticipation of the Days of Awe

Please mark your calendar for a series of Adult Ed sessions, coming in September, about our en-vironment. Our discussions will be led by experts from our congregation as brown bag dinners on Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 throughout September.

In our self-reflection leading up to and through the High Holy Days, we strive to mend relation-ships and ease damage we have done in the prior year. As we work to heal what has been bro-ken, to renew ourselves, and to do the “work” of Teshuvah (often translated as repentance), we also consider our impact on the planet. Our series will feature information about our environment, climate change and other ways in which humans impact the planet, precautions we can take, and the long-term picture for environmental protection. We hope you will join us, and we welcome your ideas. Questions? Contact Sandy Berenter, [email protected], or Leigh Evans, [email protected].

During July and August we will revert to our summer schedule. Friday night services will be held at 6pm . There will be two

Shabbat in the Park services, August 4 and September 1. These are held at Kathryn Albertson Park behind the stone letters.

Saturday services are at the regular time.

Deli Days: Idaho’s Jewish Festival 2017 Thanks to all of the amazing, hardworking, dedicated volunteers who made this summer’s event a huge success! Moving Deli Days outside gave the whole event a more festival feeling, and our volun-teers were able to enjoy the music, the atmosphere, and the mild weather, along with our guests. Under the direction of Joe Levitch, we introduced HOT sandwiches, which were a huge hit. Out fear-less team of Kosher Pitmasters kept the hot pastrami flying out of the food tent, until every bit had been sold. Our unparalleled desserts continued to be a highlight of the event, thanks to the joint ef-forts of Telma Anderson and Betsy Russell, and their tireless teams of bakers and baked goods vol-unteers. Oliver Thompson organized a stellar musical lineup for our entertainment, culminating in a beautiful Shabbat service led by Chava Mirel. Now that I have started naming names, the list could go on and on! Thanks to Shira Kronenberg and Juan Carlos Duque for helping Joe and Ken slice 1000 pounds of meat; to Kathryn Shapero for coor-dinating the beer and wine; to Arleen Winkler for overseeing the raffle and gift shop; to Jeannette

Bowman for managing the ticket sales; to Addie Waxman for coordinating the event security; and to so many others who stayed onsite for the whole event to keep things moving (if I try to list you all, I will certainly forget someone, but you are all rock stars). The event would not have been possible without the contributions of our teens and religious school students – the kids of CABI worked every bit as hard as the adults, in many cases staying all day both days to work various shifts. The future of our congrega-tion is in good hands! I would like to extend a special thank you to Andy Savin and his company Fresca Mexican Foods, LLC, for their sponsorship of the event. Thanks also go out to Jim Kinnas, Boise Greek Food Festival chair, for his support and advice (and trays), as well as our fantastic Sysco contacts this year, Gus Fitzpatrick and Execu-tive Chef Dave Knickrehm. I know everyone is curious about our profits. We are still working on the numbers, but we will share them in an upcoming Chai Lights as soon as they are final.

Jewish Journeys 5778 Religious School Update – I know it’s long, but I promise it’s worth your time

School has been a happily crowded place on Wednesday nights this year and, in fact, it spilled out into two “cubicle” classrooms erected in the Social Hall. As our kindergarten (gan) through high school enrollment continues to hove between 80-90 students, including 20+ teens, we anticipate filling every nook and cranny with Jewish youth for some time to come. Families convened twice this year to discuss expectations and desires for their children’s religious education. We all want so much for our children and grandchildren and realized that a scant 2 hours, once a week, is insufficient. As a result of family and teacher input, religious school is expanding:

Classes will meet twice weekly.

Wednesday will remain Jewish Journeys/general religious education focusing on Talmud/Torah, history, land and people, and culture (5:15 – 7:45 p.m.)

Sunday afternoon class will be devoted solely to ability-based Hebrew (4:30 – 6:00 p.m.).

Optional dinner program will be offered on Wednesday nights .

We are re-establishing a family-teacher organization (FTO). We received a generous grant from the Groves Foundation which will go toward enhancing and expanding programming for all ages. We’re working on reviving a havurah program, enlivening and broadening the appeal and creativity of our Family/Tot Shabbat monthly programs, formalizing a “hadracha” (leadership and service) curriculum for teens, and starting a new b’mitzvah program designed to teach our children about philanthropy and Jewish values. Our budget is on the facing page. I was worried about how our precious school would fare this year when my partner and chochum (wise one) Becky Groves re-tired as Co-Director of Education in August 2016. Luckily, Becky has remained an advisor-in-the-wings, substitute teacher, and go-to volunteer, organizing Shabbat on the Lake and the new Shabbat on the Mountain, scheduled for August 26, 2017, at Bo-gus Basin. Lucky for us, Becky will return next year as a teacher. Becky’s legacy is the philosophy of creative and enjoyable engagement in living and learning Judaism across all age groups. Our number one goal in Religious School continues to be making CABI a place kids and teens want to be.

Y ear two of Under the Tent of Abraham Camp is underway, host-ed by CABI. On the first day campers baked challah. This camp brings together members of the Muslim, Christian and Jewish faiths. Last year the First Congregational Church host-ed the camp; next year the Islamic Center of Boise plans to

host the camp.

School begins after High Holy Days. The first class will be Wednesday, September 27, 2017. Registration, tuition information, and volunteer sign-ups will be sent later this summer.

Life Cycle Condolences to Ina Thompson, and her children Zack Thompson, Vanessa Dancer and Iven Thompson, on the death of their husband and father Jim Thompson on Monday, May 29.

Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel accepts credit and debit cards to make payments to the synagogue more convenient for our members. We incur incremental processing fees for providing this service that have until now been absorbed by the syna-gogue. This is no longer sustainable: in the past fiscal year alone, these “incremental” fees amounted to almost $6,000.

It is common practice for nonprofit organizations to charge a convenience fee for all credit/debit card transactions. CABI will begin charging a 3% convenience fee on all credit/debit card transactions effective July 1, 2017. This convenience fee may be tax-deductible for you; please consult your tax professional.

If you prefer not to incur this convenience fee, please contact the CABI office to pay in cash or with a check. Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of Con-gregation Ahavath Beth Israel.

Sharon Ledesma Elected President

On Monday, June 26, CABI held it’s annual meeting at the shul. Officers voted in at this meeting are Sharon Ledesma, President; Amy Duque, Vice President; James Auw, Treasur-er; and Alethia Dahlin, Secretary. Members at large voted in are Joe Levitch and Davida Mitchell. Cody Lineal, who was on the slate of nominees, had to withdraw due to a job relocation. No 2017/2018 budget was presented. The Executive Com-mittee will be convening during the summer to formulate a plan to meet our budgetary needs. A budg-et will be sub-mitted at anoth-er CABI-wide meeting this fall in conjunction with a fiscal plan for meeting this budget and long term goals.

S halom! Last month the teens worked at Deli Days prepping food, taking orders, pulling sodas, creating expert Brooklyn Egg Creams, barista'ing, and helping out wherever we were needed.

Soon, some of us will be going to Camp Kalsman in Arlington, Washington, or Kutz in New York. These camps teach us about Judaism and leadership. As teens, we are the next generation of leaders and we need

to know how to do it right...and we have to learn somehow. These camps also help us find out who we are as Jews and give us life-long friends whom we look forward to seeing every year. We hope you have an amazing summer.

The teens will be selling honey again this fall. The honey comes from our own bees on CABI property.
