Sgraffito
SGRAFFITO is a term used to describe a technique of ceramic decoration that involves painting a coat of a colored slip onto a leatherhard pot, and then carving
through the slip to reveal the clay color below. It is found in many cultures and places from the Middle East to Europe and America. Sgraffito ware was produced as
early as 1735 by German settlers in colonial America.
Pennsylvania German folk art has characteristicand often used representations of hearts, tulips, birds and the flower urn. And while the PennsylvaniaGerman potters made mostly plain functionalware with local red earthenware clay, theslip-decorated pieces have a beautiful rich red andyellow coloring.http://ceramicartsdaily.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/pennsylvania-redware.pdf

Objectives:• Construct a simple slab form (cylinder, a second sling
mold, a mug, circular container with lid)• Design an image using radial, symmetrical, or
asymmetrical balance. Decide if you want it to look like a realistic scene/imagery or an abstract design/pattern. Consider how it will fit on your clay form. Think in terms of lines, shapes, and positive/negative space.
• Paint a contrasting engobe color in a select area. • Trace your design onto the engobe.• Scratch through the shapes to reveal the clay body
underneath.
