P7 Orienteering Transition Event / Tachartas Tìr-Stiùireach Clas 7
On Wednesday the 20th of March, P7 attended the annual Orienteering Transition
Event organised and run by Active Schools and the Outdoor Learning team. This
year, it took place on the rugby pitch next to the Golf Club. Pupils were put into
teams along with pupils from other schools. They completed a number of team-
building skills activities before being sent off into the trees with a map to look
for clues together. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed making new friends and working
with their peers from across the island.

P7 Fairburn Trip / Turas Clas 7 gu Farabraoin
On the 8th May, Primary Seven pupils went on their residential trip to Fairburn
activity centre in Muir of Ord. There the pupils enjoyed activities such as
archery. paintball, raft building, and WOW (Walk on water) balls.
The fun didn't stop there as the pupils spent their evenings at the cinema and
bowling. On the last day, pupils had the opportunity to hit the shops and lunch
was in The Mustard Seed, where we were welcomed with such warmth and
friendship.
The pupils were fantastic and it was such a pleasure to be able to spend a few
days out of the class and embrace outdoor learning.

P7 Fundraising Triathlon / Togail-Airgid Triathlon
Thursday the 21st of March saw P7 making their way to the Ionad Spors Leodhais
to complete their Sponsored Triathlon in order to raise funds for their school
trip to Fairburn. The pupils started with the swimming event where they had a
target of 10 lengths. They did an amazing job and all pupils managed to surpass
that target.
After the swim, the group split up and half went to the static bikes to complete
a 5K cycle whilst the other half went to the running track and ran 3 laps (2.5K).
Groups then swapped over and completed their final event.
All pupils put 100% effort into every part of the event and raised an outstanding
total of £1,265.00 for their trip to the mainland.
Nicolson Pupils return to Sgoil an Rubha / Thill Sgoilearan Àrd Sgoil
MhicNeacail gu Sgoil an Rubha
Three Nicolson Institute pupils recently took part in a transition workshop with
Primary 7 pupils at their former school, Sgoil an Rubha.
Craig (S3), Isla (S2) and Gabi (S2) took a step
back in time to their old primary school and were
greeted enthusiastically by Primary 7 and school
staff.
The workshop was an informal Q&A session
where the younger pupils were able to ask about
their move into secondary school after the
summer. Having the Nicolson pupils along gave a
realistic insight into day-to-day life at the
school and they
answered lots of
questions which
the P7s had - from
what to do if they
got lost to how to
buy lunch (and
plenty of other
queries in between!)
The three Nicolson pupils handled the questions in a mature and sensible ma nner
and their positive experiences at the NI came across.

At the end of the afternoon, Primary 7 agreed that it had been really worthwhile
to have the older pupils visit as they felt they could ask them about their
experiences of secondary school.
One pupil said, “I found the question and answer session really good, it answered
lots of my questions and made me feel a lot more confident.” Another Primary 7
added: “It was very helpful and it was good to see Craig, Isla and Gabi again.”
The Q&A session was part of a programme of P7 transition work developed
between Community Learning and Development staff and Sgoil an Rubha as part
of the school’s transition activities. The CLD programme also included a fun day
for P7 pupils from various Lewis schools at the Nicolson Institute over the Easter
holidays, giving pupils an opportunity to explore the building when it was empty of
older pupils!

EuroQuiz Finals – SaR team at Scottish Parliament / Cuairt Dheireannach SaR
aig Parlamaid na h-Alba
The successful team of P6 pupils: Adam, Ava, Isabella, Odhran and Lydia
travelled to Edinburgh in
May with Mrs E Macleod
and Mr Graham Cay to take
part in the Scottish Final
of EuroQuiz. They were
an impressive team who
had prepared hard in
school, giving up
lunchtimes and breaks for
many weeks. As always,
competition is tough in Edinburgh as all
32 local authority winners compete
against each other but Sgoil an Rubha
rose to the occasion once again, finishing
in the top half of teams. A fantastic
achievement!
They thoroughly deserved their Edinburgh cinema visit, dinner and visit to Camera
Obscura to celebrate their success.
Gaelic Medium Activities / Gnìomhan tro Mheadhan na Gàidhlig
In addition to the usual Motiv8 classes, a programme of Gaelic medium activities
will be on offer this summer. Most of the activities will be aimed at primary pupils.
Gaelic speaking instructors will lead the sessions, which aim at three different
levels of Gaelic ability: children who are fluent in Gaelic, learners, and sessions
that are suitable for anyone with an interest in Gaelic.
A number of the activities will take place in August and will therefore give pupils
who don’t get a chance to speak Gaelic at home, the opportunity to use the
language before returning to school.
A programme can be found on the Comhairle’s homepage: https://www.cne-
siar.gov.uk/leisure-sport-and-culture/childrens-outdoor-activities-in-gaelic/

Flower Power / Cumhachd nam Flùraichean
P5/6 created an enterprise company called
Flower Power earlier this term. The class
decided to use the school polytunnel to grow and
sell plants and alongside this idea to make
recycled wooden planters. Pupils opted into
departments and initially decided on a company
name and logo. Pupils then completed application
forms to apply for Management positions in each
of the company Departments.
All applicants were invited to an interview with
Mrs Macleod where they were asked a number of
questions about their interests, skills and
reasons for applying.
Mrs Macleod then had a very hard job to decide who should be appointed to the
posts! This is a picture of all the successful company Directors and their Deputes.
It has meant a lot of hard work to create the planters and grow healthy, strong
plants. Pupils have been gaining lots of skills at the same time and recently
identified some very important learning for life and work through: teamworking,
decision making, leadership skills, listening and talking, learning and creating
spreadsheets, painting, sanding and horticulture, design, working to deadlines and
quality control.
The planters are now ready to sell and the Sales & Marketing group have received
many orders from parents and friends of the school. They will also be sold at the
Garden Party in the school this week.
