WELCOME

St. George’s International School is an independent international Day and Boarding School community, of over 400 boys and girls aged between 3 and 18. Approximately 20% of our students are British, and there are in excess of 50 different nationalities represented in this year’s student body. The language of instruction is English. We have a thriving bilingual English/French programme and many of our students are truly multilingual.

HISTORY

The school was founded in 1927 by two young Oxford graduates, Lorna Southwell and Osyth Potts. In their undergraduate days at St. Hugh’s College, following the horrors of the First World War, they conceived the idea of founding a school in which children of all nationalities could grow and learn together in what was one of the world’s first international schools. They hoped, as we still do today, that the children of St. George’s International School, with this educational experience behind them, will as adults understand others better and thus contribute to the promotion of peace and tolerance throughout the world. The school today is renowned for its high academic standard, dedicated staff and the variety of co-curricular opportunities, as would befit our founders. Adopting the philosophy and rigour of the International Baccalaureate was a natural choice, given that at the heart of the IB is the motivation to create a better world through education. Founded in 1927, St. George’s International School aims to combine its well-structured, traditional ethos with academic excellence in an international environment.

Enjoying a safe location, our whole school community endeavours to foster mutual respect and understanding whilst cultivating individual talents and potential.

As stated in our motto, «Levavi Oculos», St. George’s International School encourages students to lift their eyes and recognise positive qualities within themselves and others and to nurture a caring and dynamic attitude in today’s demanding world.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

Our aims

We aim to play a role, together with the family and other organisations, in fostering praiseworthy attitudes, lasting values, and desirable behaviour in order to develop in students a sense of responsibility towards school, family, local and global communities.

Our methods

• We provide a structure of sport, academic and pastoral support for both day & boarding students within the school through the House and Tutor system.

• We have established a discipline structure which gives stability and reinforces positive and praise-worthy attitudes with our Prefects and Monitors as role models.

• We work closely with parents in order to foster strategies to assist, help and advise students.

• We acknowledge different learning styles and offer effective assessment to identify and develop students’ qualities.

• We monitor students and provide assistance for those who require support in their learning.

• We encourage involvement in all aspects of school life and provide opportunities for students to contribute to the local community.

• We continually revise the co-curricular programme so that it reflects the students’ interests and allows them to develop their passions whilst maintaining a balance between academics, sports, creative activities and community service.

• We promote knowledge, understanding, acceptance and respect for other cultures, beliefs and lifestyles.

• We endeavour to provide appropriate facilities and materials for effective learning to take place within the classroom and beyond it.

• We recruit and retain an internationally minded faculty and staff of the highest quality and encourage their continued professional development.

• We prepare students for Cambridge International Examinations’ IGCSE examinations, the International Baccalaureate Organisation’s Diploma Programme, AS Levels and our High School Diploma Programme.

FACULTY

Teaching staff come from a variety of countries, with a majority are British. Other nations represented amongst the staff include Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland & the USA. All teaching staff hold university degrees and post graduate certificates in education, many have higher qualifications, including Masters and Doctorates. Staff enjoy teaching at St. George’s International School and unlike most international schools turnover is low. Many teachers choose to stay for between 5 and 30 years, committing themselves to the school and its pupils. As well as being well qualified, the teachers are experienced, aged on average between 30 and 50 years. Most staff speak French as well as English, with a variety of other languages, including Arabic, Mandarin, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish as a second language.

ORGANISATION OF THE SCHOOL

St. George’s International School is organised on a House system, with four Houses: Atalanta, Diana, Minerva and Vesta. Students are assigned to a tutor in one of the Houses. The vertical tutor group system provides the basis for academic and pastoral support. Inter-House competitions occur throughout the year in a variety of Sports, Music and Performing Arts.

ACADEMICS

Class size varies from 1 to 20 students in the Senior department, with the average being approximately 12. In September 2006, the school adopted the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Currently offered:

St. George’s International School also provides a High School Diploma Programme (HSDP) for students aiming primarily for further education in US Colleges and not wishing to take the International Baccalaureate. St. George’s International School continues to offer the British IGCSE programme, through Cambridge International Examinations, usually taken in late spring of Year 11.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

To graduate and receive a diploma, a student must have fulfilled the following requirements:

1. Successful completion of Years 10 to 13, i.e., U.S. grades 9, 10, 11, 12, or their equivalent in the student’s home country, assuming the entire last year is completed at St. George’s International School.

2. Minimum age of 17 attained before date of graduation.3. Minimum of 26 credits attained in academic work. The 26 credits must

include: English 4, Mathematics 3, Science 2, Foreign language 2, Social Science 2, ICT 2.

4. Physical education is required for each year of attendance, though no credits are awarded.

5. Minimum score of 6/9 in IELTS or Cambridge Advanced Certificate of English.

ACCREDITATIONS

St. George’s International School is a recognised International Baccalaureate World School (No. 2868), with its first IB class having graduated in June 2008.

The School is also a recognised Cambridge International Examinations centre (Centre No. CH002) for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) examinations, amongst others.

As a member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), St. George’s International School closely follows current educational pedagogy and thinking. The staff attend regular annual meetings and conferences.

St. George’s International School was first accredited in 2010 by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), jointly with Council of International Schools (CIS). Accreditation by NEASC is recognised by the U.S. Department of Education and indicates that a school meets or exceeds established criteria within the profession for the assessment of institutional quality through a periodic process of self-study and peer review.
