I am so honored to be taking on the position of South

Florida District Dental Association president. I have

been a member of organized dentistry since I became a

member of the American Student Dental Association

over 20 years ago and have always found it extremely

important to “belong.” I have enjoyed all the friendships

I have made along the way. Some of those early friend-

ships were celebrated along with me at the recent Instal-

lation of Officers event on June 20, and were greatly

appreciated.

Those of you that serve, or have served in leadership po-

sitions, not only know how rewarding it can be, but also

how time consuming and underappreciated it can be as

well. Thankfully, I accent the positives associated with

all the leadership positions I have held, and have grown

to love serving our great dental profession.

My installation marks the culmination of a long road.

After going up the ranks at the South Dade Dental So-

ciety and the CEOLA-HELO dental association, eight

years of service to the Florida National Dental Conven-

tion, holding delegate positions to the Florida Dental As-

sociation (FDA) and American Dental Association

(ADA), and presently serving on the Florida Association

of Periodontists board, I have finally arrived at what I

perceive to be the most challenging position to date -

president of SFDDA.

This association is as diverse as they come! And, I

gladly accept the challenge.

My goal for this year, in a nutshell, is the following:

"RENEW what I perceive as a DORMANT passion for

organized dentistry in our older member dentists and

AWAKEN an UNDISCOVERED passion for organized

dentistry in our younger member dentists."

How do I plan on doing this? I plan on bringing the fun

and excitement back into our profession. I have planned

a year filled with entertaining events, service projects

and meetings that can benefit our practices and the ever-

evolving face of dentistry.

Over my years of service, I have observed that out- of-

state meetings and busy schedules have led to our asso-

ciation's transformation, and frankly it is not a priority

in the hearts of South Florida dentists. We need to

change that. Otherwise, our professional association is

destined to fade away. For

those of you with kids study-

ing dentistry or newly gradu-

ated dentists, this should be

extremely important to you

and your kids. Without organ-

ized dentistry, today's dentist

could potentially lose his or her advocate on issues crit-

ical to our profession.

Continuous education, earning an income, and spending

time with the family are extremely important. BUT, so

is organized dentistry.

I urge you to make organized dentistry a priority in your

lives. Get involved, or at the very least, attend our

SFDDA meetings, or one of our three local affiliate

meetings. We need you!

Our next member event will be the “First Annual Dentist

Day Family Picnic.” This event will be held on October

6, 2012, and will include activities for both the kids and

adults.

Take note of our NEW affiliate photo section in this

newsletter. This section will be dedicated to keeping you

abreast of events held at the affiliate societies, with the

hope that you may be inspired to join one, or even all!

The events are both educational and entertaining, and I

invite you to contact the affiliate presidents and attend

their next meeting. To make this more enticing, we are

including a coupon to be used at an affiliate meeting for

complimentary dinner and continuing education credit.

Our recent successful and very entertaining installation

event, I believe, was a testament to my initiative. I hope

everyone in attendance enjoyed themselves and plans

on attending future events. Together, we can bring the

SFDDA back to the forefront and prove there is power

in numbers.

In addition, as one of your representatives to the Florida

Dental Association and the American Dental Associa-

tion, I plan on keeping you, our members, updated on

any pertinent issues affecting our profession.

Please feel free to contact me with ideas or suggestions

for the betterment of your SFDDA. I hope to see you at

our next event!

President’s Message

Beatriz E. Terry, D.D.S., M.S..

On behalf of our members, officers, executive council,

and staff, I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr.

Irene Marron for serving our district dental association

well over the past year as president, and for keeping the

South Florida District Dental Association (SFDDA)

moving in the right direction. Thank you, Irene, for a

job very well done.

This is also the time of year to pass the gavel and wel-

come a new president, and another very bright and ded-

icated member of our organized dentistry team to the

helm, Dr. Beatriz E. Terry.

Many of you already know Dr. Terry and of her signif-

icant involvement and dedication to organized dentistry.

For those of you who do not, I want to share with you

some history and other interesting aspects about our

newly-installed 2012-13 president.

Beatriz, or “Betty,” as many of her friends and col-

leagues know her, is a hometown girl, born and raised

in Miami, where her parents and two older sisters had

immigrated from Cuba five years earlier. She and her

siblings, including her older brother, also born in Miami,

grew up in the Hialeah area. She attended Immaculate

Conception School, and then following a family move

to the Westchester area, she attended St. Brendan High

School, graduating in 1983 (the same year, and the only

year, that the school won the state title in baseball! Re-

ally? I did not know that.).

She then attended Florida International University, fol-

lowed by her undergraduate dental education at Mar-

quette University School of Dentistry. She married Edy

A. Guerra, now a practicing general dentist, in her soph-

omore year. After earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery

degree, followed by a Master of Science three-year post-

graduate program in periodontics, at the University of

Minnesota, she then moved back to her home town of

Miami and established her practice.

In 1997, she successfully completed the requirements

and passed the exam-

ination given by the

American Board of

Periodontology, thus conferring upon her the status of

board certified diplomate in her specialty.

In addition to a number of academic honors and service

awards earned both during and after her dental and post-

graduate educational years, and an impressive research

masters thesis on the association between smoking and

T-cell proliferation in periodontal disease, she has since

demonstrated a high level of devotion and commitment

to organized dentistry.

She has been both a member and president of CEOLA-

HELO Hispanic Dental Association and the South Dade

Dental Society. She has been very involved at the state

level, serving as a delegate to the Florida Dental Asso-

ciation (FDA) House of Delegates for the past six years,

as a committee member of the Florida National Dental

Convention for eight years, and one of which, as Pro-

gram Chair.

She has served as an FDA Legislative Contact Dentist

for the past six years, and on the FDA Governmental Af-

fairs Committee for the past three years.

Dr. Terry has contributed at the national level as well,

serving as an alternate delegate to the American Dental

Association House of Delegates.

She has been involved in a number of professional or-

ganizations, including the Florida Association of Peri-

odontists (currently serving as Secretary/ Treasurer),

American Academy of Periodontology, Pierre Fauchard

Academy and the American College of Dentists.

Dr. Terry has held several academic appointments, in-

cluding Assistant Clinical Professor positions at both the

Department of Periodontics at Nova Southeastern Uni-

versity College of Dental Medicine (1997-98) and the

University of Florida School of Dentistry Hialeah Clinic

(1997-2003).

She also serves as an advisory board

member at Miami Dade College School

of Dental Hygiene.

Betty also enjoys a wonderful personal

life apart from her impressive dental ca-

reer, which she shares with her very nice

husband, Edy Guerra, and their three

lovely children, Isabel (18), Julian (16)

and Pablo (14). The family enjoys the

outdoor world of boating, fishing, other

water sports, spending time at their place

in Key Largo, in addition to snow skiing

once a year in the spring.

She enjoys all sports, and is an accom-

plished athlete, having participated in

local fun runs, half marathons and even

triathlons.

She also displayed another of her lesser

known, but very commendable talents –

as a serious “karaoke singer,” belting out

tunes on stage, such as “Mambo #5,” at

the recent Installation of Officers. For

those of you who missed it, that was the

night the SFDDA office was transformed

into “Betty’s Lounge” for one very spe-

cial and enjoyable evening of singing,

partying and fun.

On behalf of our entire dental association,

please join me in extending a warm wel-

come to Dr. Beatriz E. Terry, as we look

forward to a great year ahead under her

leadership as our 2012-13 SFDDA

President.

Note from the Editor: This “letter to the editor” wassubmitted to the Journal of Oral Surgery Oral MedicineOral Pathology Oral Radiology.

“If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.”

This familiar expression refers to our common tendency to

see the world through our own biased viewpoint. And so it

also apparently goes for the American Association of Oral

and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR). We could not help

but react with surprise and disappointment upon reading the

editorial appearing in the June, 2012 edition of the Journal

of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology entitled, “Po-

sition statement of the American Academy of Oral and Max-

illofacial Radiology on selection criteria for the use of

radiology in dental implantology with emphasis on cone

beam computed tomography.”1

Among a number of questionable statements and opinions

found throughout the document, one prophetic proclamation

stands out as an obvious misconception to those who practice

clinical dentistry on a daily basis. Found in the abstract por-

tion of the paper, the AAOMR recommends that “…cross-

sectional imaging be used for the assessment of all dental

implant sites and that CBCT is the imaging method of choice

for gaining this information.”

However, the authors have apparently failed to take into ac-

count a number of important facts in reaching such a conclu-

sion. Paramount among these would be the absence of

controlled studies or data to support the advisory opinion.

Despite the lack of evidence based science demonstrating im-

proved patient outcomes with 3-D CBCT, nor documented

harm to patients if not utilized, the statement is nevertheless

made for the world to accept and to live by as if it were

proven and authenticated doctrine.

The authors also fail to account for the fact that the over-

whelming majority of dental surgical procedures performed

on a daily basis, including removal or exposure of impacted

teeth, sinus lifts, bone grafts, and yes, also dental implants –

especially in the hands of those with adequate training and

experience – are performed successfully, and without the

need for 3-D imaging.

A typical implant site with an obvious lack of bone on the fa-

cial aspect, as one example, does not require 3-D imaging to

impart the knowledge that a bone graft is required on the fa-

cial aspect. Simple inspection and palpation, as well as direct

visualization during surgery is more than adequate to acquire

this information. Conversely, a site with obvious sufficient

ridge width, height of bone above the inferior alveolar nerve,

or beneath the sinus floor, does not require 3-D imaging.

Adequate appreciation for the location of the mental foramen

or the nature and extent of the lingual concavity of the

mandible is also not “rocket science,” nor should it require

3-D imaging science, as such structures are readily apparent

to the adequately trained and experienced clinician.

Clinical exam, adequate 2-D imaging, appreciation of

anatomy and proper implant techniques, thorough planning

and communication with the restorative dentist and/or well-

made guide stents have proven to be more than adequate for

clearly most implant sites or cases, without the need for the

added radiation and cost of 3-D CBCT.

Perhaps what is most striking to those reading the AAOMR

paper is the choice of the word, “all,” and the phrase, “all im-plant sites.” It is most interesting that in a 2000 AAOMR po-

sition paper, “some form of cross sectional imaging” was

“…the authors have apparently failed to take intoaccount…the lack of evidence based science demonstrating

improved patient outcomes with 3-D CBCT, nor documentedharm to patients if not utilized.”

AAOMR Position Paper Lacks

Profession

recommended for “most patients receiving implants.”2 In the

span of just over ten years, however, the advisory opinion has

been inexplicably elevated from that of “most…implant pa-tients” to “all implant sites.” However, this change was ap-

parently made with no rationale nor scientific evidence to

justify it other than the “increased use” and “availability” of

CBCT.

Of equal or greater concern than the missing science in such

claims, and especially when published in the format of a po-

sition paper, would be the resultant negative impact it may

have on the entire dental profession from a purely legal per-

spective, while imparting a potentially harmful message on

several levels.

Among these include the implied concepts that (1) we, the

readers, may be misled to believe that unless each of us pur-

chase a CBCT for our practice and/or fail to use or offer the

study for myriad procedures, and most notably in this case,

dental implants, we may be practicing beneath the standard

of care, negligent, and/or at a higher risk for being success-

fully sued, (2) plaintiff attorneys are provided an unprece-

dented new arsenal of ammunition to use against us in the

courtroom, and as a result, (3) our own defense attorneys are

left unable to defend us should we experience a negative pa-

tient outcome in the absence of our using this particular tech-

nique, which others have inferred or implied – no matter how

unjustly or wrongly so – as being tantamount to “standard of

care.”

Although an advisory opinion or “guideline” promulgated by

a dental specialty trade organization, such as AAOMR, is not

the legal equivalent of a “standard of care,” the dental pro-

fession is placed in a position of significantly higher risk of

plaintiff attorneys being all to happy to interpret and present

it as such to others, especially in courts of civil litigation to

unknowing and unsuspecting lay juries.

This same legal concern has been the subject of recent liabil-

ity carrier seminars attended by defense attorneys from

around the country, in which articles circulating in our dental

literature with similar messages have been singled out and

criticized (including at least one cited as a reference in, and

another by one of the authors of, the AAOMR paper) as in-

accurate, harmful to dentistry, and clearly, the would be legal

efforts of our defense attorneys.3-6

Credible information was shared in the seminar presentations

which (a) questioned the necessity of, or increased benefits

derived from, CBCT for the majority of clinical or surgical

applications in dentistry, especially when weighed against in-

creased radiation risks and cost to patients, (b) questioned the

paradigm shift toward CBCT, simply because it has become

more widely available, and more strongly marketed to den-

tists, and (c) questioned the motivation of proponents of the

“CBCT-as-standard-of-care” position.

Leading academicians have questioned the pendulum of den-

tal imaging swinging so rapidly toward 3D CBCT. Vincent

Kokich, Chairman of Orthodontics at the University of Wash-

ington, and among the specialty’s most highly respected

teachers and mentors, wrote a editorial in a leading refereed

orthodontic journal questioning whether we have “truly iden-

tified the …benefits of 3D imaging,” especially when

weighed against the added radiation risks and cost, or

whether proponents’ claims that the information gained ex-

ceeds that of conventional imaging in a meaningful way so

as to improve patient outcomes.7

Granted, there are, no doubt, many new and emerging tech-

nologies used today in medicine in dentistry - including 3-D

imaging and CBCT – which are truly invaluable adjuncts in

diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care, when indi-

cated for select cases.

However, to categorically opine that it be used for “all”cases? One cannot help question the extent to which this

“misguided guideline” is based on documented scientific

knowledge as opposed to the self-serving interests of a few

“hammers” in search of the proverbial nail.

We feel it is the responsibility of organizations representing

specialties of dentistry, such as AAOMR, to put forth infor-

mation which can be assured as verifiably accurate, while

steering clear of proclamations which may pose unforeseen

risks or harm to others who practice within our dental pro-

fession.

A small glimmer of hope may be found in the final statement

within the opening abstract of the AAOMR paper. “This doc-

ument will be periodically revised to reflect new evidence.”

One can only hope that this process will begin now.

“Of equal or greater concern than the missing science in suchclaims, and especially when published in the format of a positionpaper, would be the resultant negative impact it may have on the

entire dental profession from a purely legal perspective, while im-parting a potentially harmful message on several levels.”

South Florida District Dental Association Officer Installation

On Wednesday, June 20, 2012, we gathered at the SFDDA head-

quarter office in Coral Gables to celebrate and install the 2012-13

officers of the South Florida District Dental Association.

Highboy cocktail tables and special lighting turned the office into

Betty’s Lounge in honor of President, Dr. Beatriz Terry. The scene

was complete with stage and sound system too.

When guests arrived, little did they suspect that they would be in

the spotlight as the live entertainment for the evening.

In the DJ booth and serving as master of ceremonies, Dr. Richard

Mufson, aka “Muffy Richardson,” was in on the surprise that had

guests warming up their vocal chords for a go at karaoke.

Before the evening was over most everyone had taken a turn at belt-

ing out a few of their favorites songs. Whether solo or ensemble

singing, it truly was a night to remember.

Congratulations to the 2012-13 officers:

Dr Beatriz Terry, President, Dr. Jeannette Peña Hall, President

Elect, Dr. Marcos Diaz, Vice President, Dr. Elaine DeRoode, Sec-

retary, Dr. Rodrigo Romano, Treasurer and Dr. Kellie Paxton,

two boys. We bike around the lakes, play

soccer and go up to our cabin in Wisconsin to

fish and jet ski.

I plan to expand our practice to a network of

offices in the metro area. I like the business

side of dentistry.

I hope to see my children develop into

good people and guide them to achieve

their goals. I can see having grandkids.

I admire my patients. Sometimes they

have to sit for hours and they

rarely complain.

I recommend Fortress professional

liability coverage. Great customer

service. My agent is always available

and helpful. The coverage is complete

and the prices are competitive.

Over 14,000 dentists trust Fortress with their professional liability insurance.

For over a decade, the members of the SFDDA have given

back to the communities in need by volunteering a few hours

of their time to provide much needed dental services. Many

of our SFDDA members have volunteered in the last few years

to provide necessary dental care to indigent children and

adults.

This outreach has been made possible through the Florida

Baptist Convention Mobile Dental Unit. It is one of the "Pro-

ject Dentists Care" affiliates associated with the Florida Dental

Association that helps access to dental care for low income

Florida residents. Dentists who volunteer may receive up to a

maximum of five hours of required continuing education

credit, calculated at one continuing education credit per three

hours of patient services.

In addition to the great satisfaction you get from helping those

in need, you will also receive two FREE movie tickets of your

choice to any Regal or AMC Theater, compliments of the

SFDDA.

Florida Dental AssociationHouse of DelegatesOn June 14, 2012, the components of the FDA met in

Orlando, Florida for the June House Of Delegates. Dr.

Cesar Sabates presided over his last meeting as Presi-

dent of the Florida Dental Association. To say that we

were proud of his efforts and successes on behalf of the

dental profession is an understatement. His closing

speech captured his year as president, from the highs to

the lows and was filled with gratitude for his friends and

colleagues for their support.

Dr. Sabates presented the FDA’s Service Award to Dr.

Paul Benjamin for his leadership and service on the

BOT. Dr. Benjamin, who served as our Trustee to the

FDA also received the FDA Outgoing Trustee Award.

Dr. Tom Ward was presented with a special award for

his work on the Access to Care White Paper. Dr. Sabates

also presented a special award to Dr. Alan Friedel for

his distinguished service. With this being his last term,

Dr. Friedel served as the FDA

Speaker of the house for four

years.

Finally, in recognition of this

service as President of the

FDA, Dr. Sabates was pre-

sented with the FDA Presi-

dents Award by Dr. Larry

Nissen.

Some might think it is the end

of an era considering that some of these award recipients

have come to the end of their tenure as volunteers. How-

ever, they leave a lasting legacy , the gold standard in

what it means to be dedicated and steadfast to the causes

of the dental profession and organized dentistry.
