All About SF6 Gas

SF6 Gas Fast Facts

Discovered by Henri Moissan and Paul Lebeau in 1901 Chemical name: Sulfur hexafluoride Properties: colorless, odorless, non-toxic,

non-flammable, no reaction chemistry, high dielectric strength

Molar Mass 146.06 grams/mole Asphyxiation hazard in high concentrations & with

prolonged exposure Primary application worldwide:

as an insulating and arc-quenching media in electrical switch-gear (the only substance that can perform both functions)

SF6 Gas’ Primary Job: Protecting Switchgear

Many types of electrical switchgear require the use of SF6 gas as an insulating & arc-quenching media. If certain concentrations of SF6 gas are not present, then a dangerous situation exists and the switchgear should be locked-out. WIKA has specifically developed density instrumentation for this application that is both temperature-compensated and hermetically sealed, taking away all ambient influences that could affect the readout.

Normal pressure gauges are not suitable for SF6 density monitoring because, with the same density level, the pressure indicated is dependent on ambient temperature, altitude, and even weather systems. All of these factors combined can exceed 20 % of the filling pressure of a tank and represent the introduction of significant error. Consequently, gas density instruments with temperature compensation and hermetically sealed cases are designed to show consistent readings no matter the environmental conditions and should be used in electric switchgear applications.

Knowledge Base

A wide range of products are needed to properly work with SF6 gas during its lifecycle. As an industry leader, WIKA alone offers the combined knowledge, experience, and product portfolio that covers the entire SF6 gas lifecycle.

Leadership in SF6 Innovation

Gas Density Instrumentation

Globally, WIKA has an installed fleet of over 1,000,000 Gas Density Monitoring instruments and manufactures at a 5-sigma quality level. Our temperature compensated and hermetically sealed SF6 instruments are trusted on switchgear in conditions from the scorching desert to the frozen tundra. The result is instrumentation of the highest accuracy without temperature or ambient influences so that “go“/“no go“ decisions are seamless.

Gas Leak Tight Connections

During the SF6 tank filling process as well as during maintenance, having robust leak-tight connections is essential to preventing unnecessary gas leaks. WIKA Gas Leak Tight Connections include valves, couplings, and components that meet this strict industry requirement.

Gas Filling & Recovery Equipment Filling and evacuation of SF6 tanks must be done with proper recovery equipment. WIKA Gas Filling Units are designed for the wide spectrum of SF6 gas filling and recovery operations needed for the T&D Industry.

Gas Management Systems

Proactive monitoring is possible using WIKA transmitters as a part of SF6 Gas Management Systems (GMS). Options here include everything from displaying a transmitter signal remotely to emission trending. Gas Management is state-of-the-art and is continually evolving to meet the needs of the Smart Grid.

Leak Locators / Gas Analytic Equipment Over time, switching operations in SF6-insulated switchgear lead to an increasing amount of both moisture and highly toxic and corrosive decomposition products in the tank, impeding the safe operation of switchgear. WIKA offers a complete line of analytic equipment and accessories to accurately access the SF6 gas percentage as well as the moisture and other decompostion products present in SF6 tanks. In addition, it is important to make sure that any leak paths in SF6 tanks are quickly pinpointed. The WIKA Leak Locator is the perfect tool to precisely identify the location and magnitude of leaks so that appropriate repairs can be made.

This gives us a unique high-level perspective so that the best possible solutions can be recommended.

SF6 Academy

Having a solid understanding of the entire world of SF6 gas is essential in formulating a strategy to maximize the value that can be added throughout the SF6 gas life cycle. The SF6 Academy exists to provide an environment of learning and best practice collaboration by assembling industry experts. Each session is customized according to the needs of the audience.

Dramatic pressure differences inside switchgear are caused by temperature changes over both 2-hour and 12-month periods. If this is not compensated directly in the instrument, then it must be accounted for manually in order to get an accurate reading of the density.

SF6 Gas Density Instrumentation - Temperature Compensation

Bimetal (Gas Density Monitors/Indicators) A bimetal in the measuring system expands and contracts with temperature changes so that when SF6 gas pressure changes due to temperature, the density displayed on the dial remains constant.

Electronic Sensor (Gas Density Transmitters) Electronic compensation via a modified piezo-resistive pressure sensor combined with an electronic temperature sensor.

Available Temperature Compensation Methods

Reference Chamber (Gas Density Switches) Measuring SF6 gas density by comparing two different tanks - the one on the switchgear and a second “reference chamber” from an instrument.

Knowledge Base

Bellow (Gas Density Monitors with External Tank Temperature Sensor) Temperature measurement via an external capillary enables compensation of the temperature at the tank with display away from the tank.

The horizontal black line on the diagram shows the current density in a SF6 tank. The diagonal blue line indicates the measured pressure by a standard pressure gauge (notice the direct relationship between temperature and pressure). In order to accurately read the density, temperature

compensation (diagonal red line) is needed inside of the instrument. The result is the yellow horizontal line of “temperature compensated pressure”, which shows the density of SF6 gas in the tank allowing an easy “go”/”no go” decision to be made.

Page 7: SF6 Brochure

Knowledge Base

Electric switchgear is installed outdoors in the harshest conditions with lifetimes measured in decades. In order to perform optimally, SF6 gas instrumentation must be engineered accordingly with the ability to maintain reliability and accuracy year after year in the harshest environments.

SF6 Gas Analytic Equipment

Switching operations (i.e. discharges in SF6 filled equipment) over time lead to an increasing amount of toxic and highly corrosive decomposition products such as acid in switchgear tanks. The concentration of de-composition products is highly dependant on the quan-tity of reaction partners like air and moisture present during discharge activity.

These impurities impede the long-term safe operation of switchgear by creating compounds that corrode the interior surfaces of the tank over time. Proper equip-ment is needed to keep track of decomposition pro-ducts as well as pinpoint leaks on the outside of the tank to ensure the long-term operational safety of a breaker.

SF6 Quality Standards

IEC & CIGRE elaborate specific criteria and limits for SF6 gas contamination as well as the handling of SF6 gas used in electrical switchgear applications. These criteria are found in the IEC 60480 & the “SF6 Recycling & Handling Guide”. The combination of moisture with certain decomposition products (such as SO2 or SOF2) over time produces acid, corroding the interior of switchgear tanks and creating a dangerous situation that must be avoided.

The maximum acceptable impurity levels for used SF6 gas (according IEC 600):

SF6 percentage: < 3 % Decomposition products: < 50 ppmv Moisture: dewpoint temperature > -23 °C (MV)

or > -36 °C (HV)

Keeping SF6 gas inside circuit-breaker tanks during initial filling and maintenance is nearly impossible without using a self-sealing connection. WIKA Gas Leak Tight Connections (GLTCs) are a cost effective way to seal SF6 tanks so that filling and evacuation can be efficiently performed while preventing accidental release of SF6 gas into the atmosphere.

Each WIKA GLTC comes in many sizes depending on the application used. Common sizes include throughputs with Nominal Diameter (DN) 6 mm, mm, 12 mm, and 20 mm. However, other sizes may be available upon request. Materials (Aluminum, Copper Alloy, Stainless Steel, etc.) differ as well, so please inquire for your specific application. Different GLTC models can be combined for a leak-tight connection that is truly customized.
