Welcome guys and dolls to SF Magazine’s latest issue. Honestly, this is usually my favorite issue. SF staffers always put their best foot forward in anything that has a horror theme in it (wonder what that really says about us?!) – And in this issue, not only did they put their best foot forward…they stomped all over it!!! This issue is packed with some of their BEST work yet (IMHO – I know I usually say that, but really, every issue just gets better and better!!), and I hope that you will all enjoy it. Before we go into the content details, a few announcements. First off, we would like to officially welcome our new staffers: MochaK, Freddie, Gissence and Elasticgirl (Welcome to the mad house!) We are all happy to have you guys on board and hope that we won’t drive you too nuts! Now to carry on…SF Magazine’s Halloween issue is here ya’ll (yes I said “ya’ll”)! To be honest, everything in this issue is just AMAZING; however, I have to highlight that along with some really ridiculously fabulous fashion and interior décor editorials, this month’s issue also features some really interesting interviews. For one, we got the chance to interview the EA staffers Aaron Houts and Jill Johnson about the upcoming The Sims 4 game. We also got some interesting tidbits from BEO Creations and Sims veteran creator CycloneSue. We hope that this issue finds you all well, and that you are all prepared for the season – if you aren’t, then just turn the pages!

Hugs, Madi xxoo

Neo-Victo rianLight the candles my dear. I thought I heard... Never mind. I am sure it is nothing. These old places do settle and creak don’t they?

I am so cold. And lately, I have… such thoughts. I cannot eat it seems. I cannot sleep. The night is alive, and I envy it.

Come closer my dear. I do so miss you when you are away. If I may say, you have been… different since you returned. Distant. Tell me my dear, am I still your only love?

Come closer. Oh, my dear. I feel so strange. I have such… appetites. Do not be shocked. Please do not pull away. You are so warm my dearest, and I... I am so very hungry.

BEO CREATIONS

28

Page 29: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

Thank you for the interview BEO. Please tell us a bit about yourself?I am glad to greet the readers and creators of SF Magazine. And first I want to thank you for your interest in me. It is my great pleasure to be interviewed by this stylish magazine. So, a little about me; my name is Ellina, or Lina for short. I am Russian, I live in Moscow, and I have a beautiful British blue cat. :)

I have loved The Sims a long time. I played the first The Sims in my school years. The first game I bought was The Sims: Making Magic in 2003. And now I create for The Sims 3.

Why did you decide to begin creating for the Sims? Where do you draw the inspiration for your beautiful creations?I’ve enjoyed creating since childhood. I was engaged in all kinds of children’s clubs: painting, sculpture, sewing doll dresses, etc. When I got my first computer, the first thing I began to learn was Photoshop. And when the game The Sims came out, of course I wanted to create something for Sims. Yes, I created objects for the first Sims game, but then it did not occur to me to publish my creations.

I’m inspired by different beautiful things. It may be a collection of talented clothing designers, some interesting details, trivia, and more than once I was inspired by EA clothing. I look at it all and different images appear in

my head, which I then try to embody.

In general, I do not know how it happens, and sometimes I myself cannot explain where the ideas come from.

How would you describe your personal style?I do not adhere to any particular style of dress. But I follow the rules of “appropriateness”: business style for the office, elegant for the theater or a banquet, and I love jeans, t-shirts and comfortable shoes as casual wear.

I feel they were sorely needed and I and my Sims thank you, but why did you decide to focus on wedding attire?I have studied the “Sims-market,” and as a result

it became clear that the demand for wedding clothes was many times greater than the supply. So I decided to fill in this sector.)))

Images by SaphiraQuestions by AsiaShaMeccaFashion and Answers by BEO

A Sim wedding is a big event. As any bride knows, it’s all about the dress. Since we discovered BEO, personally my Sim has been married about five times because I simply can’t choose among her amazing creations. The designs of BEO are simply breathtaking... Ethereal... Drop-dead GORGEOUS. Where did she come from? What inspires her to create these fantastic designs? BEO was kind enough to take a moment to talk with us.

29

Page 30: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

In addition, to create a wedding dress is much more interesting than casual clothes, because the bride looks like a princess, and in fact all girls love princesses.

What tools do you use to create? How did you learn (what sites and tutorials helped you get started)?TSR Workshop and Photoshop are the main programs for creating. These two programs are quite enough for a beginner author. Additionally I use a Milkshape 3D, 3D Max, MeshToolKit, and Adobe Illustrator.

And I started study with tutorials from the TSR site. There is a good selection of different tutorials.

The Sims Community can be fickle sometimes. What would you say the joys are for creating for the Sims Community? What are the challenges? In general, it is a great pleasure to create something for the Sims Community. I get a lot of positive reviews, and it’s very nice.

The only difficulty is to guess what will be truly interesting to users. Everyone has their own preferences. So I try to create

30

Page 31: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

dresses in different styles, so that everyone can find something suitable for them.

Do you have any advice for aspiring creators? If something is impossible immediately, do not lose heart. Remember that improvement requires patience and perseverance. And most importantly, learn Photoshop.

In closing, is there anything you would like to say to the many fans of your creations? And what would you like to see more of in the Sims and the community as a whole?I would like to wish inspiration to my dear fans. Inspiration to live, work, love, and of course inspiration to play the Sims… especially to play

Sims-weddings. )))

I’d like to see in the game Sims more difficult, diverse, intriguing, mysterious quests. In this sense, my favorite addition was “World Adventures”. I imagine, for example, it would be interesting to go on a similar adventure in the underwater world of add-on “Island Paradise”.

And finally, I want to say a few words to SF. Each new issue of the magazine is getting better and better.

I wish this dynamic be maintained and the magazine to indefinitely please its readers. Many thanks to all of you guys for your work and the pleasure you give to all of us.

MASQUERADEImages by ElasticGirl

Words by asiashaMEcca

Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, will you join the dance? The masquerade goes on below. At midnight they’ll unmask. The golden hall is in full revelry. But perhaps we’re better here alone. Just you and I. At midnight we’ll reveal as well, but for now, let us tell secrets instead. Tell me something you’ve never told another soul.

There’s something about a mask that’s so freeing isn’t it? I can be anyone in this and so can you. Let’s pretend. Pretend anything at all. Dance with me. Just you and I. We don’t need the crowds. We’ll have our own private masquerade. I promise I’ll be gentle.

These looks are just right for the season. Not too dark. Not too light. A little naughty and very, very nice. Masquerade doesn’t have to glitter. And mask doesn’t have to be paired with a ball gown. Be ready for midnight. Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you...…

As always, it’s pretty dang amazing how closely the Sims mir-rors real life. Our quest for costumes

yielded a lot of sexy witch outfits and.... not much else. But, if your Sim wants to do more than show a bit of gam for Scary Day, fear not! We persevered, and the hunt went on until we found some truly original offerings. And we didn’t stop there. Hidden right in our game were some cute looks for the kiddies too! This season, let the little ones stay up for the Scary Day party. Better yet, Trick-or-treat with the mites in style! From Superhero to super ter-rifying, these costumes are nothing if not original. Now the whole fam-ily can have a very Scary Day!FAB FINDS

Jill JohnsonMODEL CREATOR SPOTLIGHT

Questions by ASIASHAMECCA Answers by JILL JOHNSON

We’ve all been stalking Sims 4. After the Sims 4 press conference, everyone found out about the exciting new CAS tools. We can’t wait to play with our Sims faces “like clay” and enjoy the new tactile CAS tools. But we wanted to know more! How did these enhancements come about? Who’s responsible for the future of CAS? And what’s it really like to work for EA? Jill Johnson, Producer of Sims 4 Create-A-Sim was kind enough to spend a few moments with us during Gamescom in Germany and give us all the dish!Tell us a little about yourself? My name is Jill Johnson. I am the Producer for the Sims 4 Create-A-Sim feature. I’ve been with EA for about 7 years now. I started on the My Sims games, and then I moved on to The Sims Medieval. On that project I was the Create-A-Sim and Signature Objects Producer. So, it was really fun. I got to produce objects like “The Pit of Judgement” and the stocks.

Ohhhh… You were the “Pit of Judgement”?!?... I loved that!

It was a lot of fun. And then after The Sims Medieval, I moved over to the Sims 4.

You guys look like you have so much fun. You all look like you really enjoy each other. Tell me what it’s like to work for EA?It’s not an act. *laughs* I’ve been very fortunate with the Creativity Tools Team and just the Sims team in general. Everybody is kind of like a family. We work together really closely.

Really quickly, you get to become good friends. Me and the Build Designer-- we worked together on the Sims Medieval as well. So that was the first project where I met him. He’s wonderful.

82

Page 83: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

Marian is a blast. We have a good time.

Now at SF, it’s all about fashion. How would you describe your personal style?Oh! Fun, fun fun! I don’t know if I have specific word for my style. I am obsessed and enamoured with bright freaky colors. No relation to the game, but I like bright fun colors. I wouldn’t say that pink is my favorite color -my favorite color is yellow- but I wear pink as often as I can possibly get it. I love retro looking tennis shoes that are about 4 sizes too big for me. I just have fun with it. I dress about 10 years too young…

Don’t we all? One of the things that Aaron (Houts - Build Producer) mentioned was that because of the new game engine, they were able to do so much more with the build tools. Do you find that in creating the assets, it’s more freeing working with the new technology in Sims 4 and how so?I would say it is. It’s something we put a lot of focus on with the Sims 4; improving performance. So that means from the get-go, we put a lot of work in early on to make sure we were building our assets smartly…intelligently. So, it’s give and take. There are certain things that make the system a little bit more in-depth. For example, the boots/pants pairing system. For CAS assets, all of the body logs that we have added surprisingly are not a hinderance in building our assets. Again, they invested really smartly with the tech artists, and they came up with... I’m not even sure of the actual name of the tech, but we call them D-Maps. It’s pretty special because in previous games, if we ever changed the base body shape of the Sim later on down in the process, we would have to go back and retouch every single clothing asset that had been built originally. But at this point, it’s really interesting because the base Sim’s body

propagates out to all the other clothings assets. So even legacy assets that have existed before, if we add a new mod -like the arm mod or the foot mod - it doesn’t have a hindrance on the existing assets. It just kind of propagates on in there, and everything updates automatically, so it’s cool.

Within reason, because I know there are things you can’t talk about at

83

Page 84: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

this point, what kind of things will we see in the Sims 4 that we’ve never seen before?Good question! Well, first and foremost is the hat/hair pairing system. We’re so excited about it. That was one of the earliest things, when I first came into the project that I was stoked about. It had really full support from the entire team. We knew it was going to be kind of a

complex system to make. But the artists, the engineers, everybody was so excited to make it work. We all just kind of put our heads together and came up with some really interesting ways to pull it together. It’s going to be so flexible and so scalable. We’re really excited… really excited.

It was so amazing to see the hats paired with any hair… I think the only question I asked during your presentation was about ethnic hair. It really killed me to have to wait for 3 or 4 EPs and then store content before things like afros started showing up. And then you finally get it.. and you can’t do anything with it… you love the hair, you love the hat… you can’t wear the hat.I know! We definitely wanted to give players that flexibility. I was there too! I see a sunhat I really like and.. I don’t have a bob haircut.

You asked probably my favorite question yesterday when you asked about having ethnic hair, more wavy hairs. One of my personal goals… Hairs are challenging. There’s so much movement. They tell so much about a person’s face. Everyone has emotional attachments with hairs. And I know we’ve had challenges getting the afros and wavy hairs in the past. It usually takes a few packs before we’re really nailing our hair pipeline. So for this project, literally, I have been really pushing a range of hairs so hard. We know that more of the wavy and ethnic hairs are going to be challenging, but we’re gathering so much ref for them. We’re really pushing hard to make sure we get them in there early and that we get them nailed right.

Yeah! It’s silly maybe, but it’s little things that make a huge difference when you’re building your Sim. So, I know that you can’t just throw anything into the CAS bin. How do you select what kind of assets we see?I’m really happy you asked that question. I think everybody with SF Magazine would be really excited to hear we have Sam Maceli (The very fashionable Ms. Maceli was interviewed in SF Mag Issue 17) working on our team. She is standing in as the Concept Art Fashion Director at this point. So the process we do for selecting clothing and hair and faces and everything we do on the project, it all starts with a list. It starts with a schedule, so we figure out our numbers. We figure out how many we are able to make. It starts really big.. just hair number 1, hair number 2, and at that point, production’s able to give a really broad, high-level idea. So we want-- 15 sleepwear outfits, for instance, 15 trendy outfits, something along those lines. Then Sam and the Concept team are able to run with that. They take that high-level direction, and Sam has some really specific fashion styles that she’s come up with. So, she’s got style guides and they just go to town gathering references, doing thumbnail sketches, all that type of stuff. They’re able to kind of fit the role of fashion designers for the project. They’re able to take styles from existing styles and trends, because we want to stay up with the times. At the same time, they are able to design some outfits that they personally would really love to see and that they come up with in their own heads. Then we have meetings, and we all put in input. ‘Like this is nice… but wouldn’t it look good as a gored skirt?’ It’s super fun. It’s a good process. It’s like a dream come true. Everyone seems to enjoy their roles.

What sort of things inspire you when you’re planning and designing assets for the game? Like people on the street? Fashion magazines? Movies?People on the street. That’s where I pick up most of my inspiration. The Sims is a game about... life. It’s about people. So, my biggest inspiration is… what people look like today. I do this everywhere I go. I’m kind of a lurker. *laughs* Having a fashion design

background, I’m always so interested in what people are wearing. So you’ll see me everywhere I go. I’m not really paying attention to the street signs. I’m not looking at where I’m supposed to go. I’m always looking at people. I just scope out people everywhere I go.

Do you actually get a chance to play the game? And how do you like to play?Actually, I play the game constantly… constantly. I’d say 85% of that is work and because it’s what I need to do. Bug testing. The other bit of that, I mean, I stay up late playing the game because I’m having fun with it. I am a CAS dork. I am obsessed with Create-A-Sim. Sims 2. Sims 3. I love that tool. I have a little bit of an art background, so I love making caricatures of myself. I love making faces. I spend lots of time in the game. I play it at home and on the weekends. That’s why I’m so excited about what we’re doing in Create-A-Sim. It really is a fun tool to use.

Do you spend a lot of time in the Community. Do you read the comments and the posts that people make?I do a little bit. There have been a few inspirational tips I’ve gotten from the Community. Like, for instance, a little while ago someone was asking “Why don’t we have more maxi-skirts in the game?” That immediately… I was so excited at that moment because we already had just a plain, basic maxi-skirt template already in the plan, already prepped. So I was so excited. ‘They’re going to love this!’

So I do read the forums every time I get a chance, because you are ones who are giving us all these amazing ideas, and you guys really are giving us the foundation to build on.

What would like to see more of in the future for the Sims and in the Community as a whole?I just want us to continue on the course that we’re setting out. Me personally, I’m really into caricature. I’m really into human expressiveness and making faces. I just want us to continue expanding on our content with faces, with hair. I really want us to give people the tools to make anyone that they know of, anybody that they relate to. I want people to be able to make their family. I want them to be able to make their roommates. And I want them to be able to look at the game and say “Hey! That looks just like Keira!” or whoever. That is the most important thing for me. Because it really is about the Sims. If you can connect with them, if you can relate to them, if you recognize them, if you know who you made, then that’s a total win. I want us to keep settling on that course. Keep adding more content and get more and more flexibility.

RustyNail downloads are like the best kind of love

affair. That special someone who you’re always glad to see. The one who always pleases your eye and always has something fresh to say.

Few creators have been so prolific. Few have remained so relevant and original.

Just pop in to Rusty’s blog every week or so. There’ll be something new, and it will be a must have... pretty much always.

So, in these pages are a love letter to RustyNail. A love story. And because it’s Halloween... it’s also a ghost story.

Somewhere, there is a darkened stage in a dim café, and the show goes

Lots of things never go out of style. Black is eternal. Basic. Always trendy. Goes with anything. Forever.

FAB FINDSWhen the days shorten and the chilly evenings beg for coziness indoors, I dim the lights and light a candle or two. I read a good book, cuddled up on my bed with plenty of fluffy pillows and soft blankets. I enjoy my cup of tea and smile as the last golden rays of sunlight turn the leaves of the maple tree in a glowing, fire red.

Interview With a VampireIm a g e s b y DrMu s i x Wo r d s b y so M es i MGu y

Androgynous guys in leather & lace, my favorite thing! OK... Not really. But I get it, sometimes a guy needs to step out of his plain button down and skinny jeans box. Sometimes, that box never held him in the first place.

Much has been made of the loner, oh-so-girlishly handsome and always misunderstood vamp of late. Too much for some. But this Gothic archetype has held strong for a reason. Face it, he’s hot, and he’s not going anywhere

136

soon. Would you want to cuddle up to a zombie. Think of the smell. Ladies love this guy, and guys, admit it, you wanna be him just a little bit.

These vamps do sexy Goth right. I mean, I couldn’t pull off a bow-tie in my wildest fashion fantasies. Let’s not even think of me in an eye-patch.

The beautiful man in the eye-liner is mysterious. He’s naughty. He’ll break your heart, sure. But he’ll feel really awful about it. Maybe write you a depressing sonnet after.

Lace is completely on trend for 2013. Why shouldn’t guys wear it? Why shouldn’t we get in touch with our inner Byronian poet?

Heck, even I would want to help these boys warm up their coffin. OK... Did I say that? I DID, and I feel no shame!

Page 142: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

This takes me back to the golden age of vampires. Before they dressed like teenage boys and went to high school. When vamps were centuries old, and you knew it.

The classic Gothic vampire isn’t like you and me. He’s courtly... Refined. He is seductive and dangerous.

Doctor M. gives us the vamps we expect to meet when we venture out to the vampire bar. We knew he was in there. Let him out of the cellar and into your game. Remember ladies and gentlemen... No regrets.

GeekCHIC

I get around... Yeah!!!

Gadget finds for THE “Computer Whiz”

As any tech geek will tell you, the very best technology is the kind you don’t have yet. Prototypes… concept sketches… If no one else has it… I want it! If it doesn’t even exist yet… I want it even MORE!!! So when I heard AsiaShaMecca was going to Sims Camp, I knew Sims 4 would be a big topic, but I also knew the expansion I’ve been waiting for was

on the program too. I have been DYING to get my hands on Into the Future.

SomeSimGuy had a plan. Tickets to Germany aren’t cheap and aspiring writers aren’t exactly overpaid (ok… some of us aren’t paid at all). So I shipped myself to Germany. Literally… in a box… with air holes. And oh baby! Was it ever worth it!!!!

Into the Future is a tech geek’s wet dream! Everything’s shiny. Everything glows. Holograms everywhere! Allergic to plants? Grab a holo-shrub. Can’t get Fifi to stop scratching up the couch? A Bright Sprite is the solution for you. Flying cars… hover boards… jet scooters. On these pages is just a small sampling (as many shots as I could grab before the Sims Campers came back from the Gamescom floor).

And thanks to this glimpse of the future, waiting for those royalty checks won’t be a problem much longer. I’m sitting on a BOOK of Arasika, Korben Computing and Cerebral Designs stocks...… waiting.

It’s time for tattered black lace and velvet. All Hallows allows a fashionista to indulge in lush dark looks she normally saves for just these special occasions.

Kohl eyes and blood-red lips are di rigour. These looks boost it even further with barely-there brows, glittering shadows and hints of ghostly subdued pastels.

Release your Sims’ inner-Goth fashionistas. And if Goth is her everyday look, play it up and celebrate it! It’s all about the darkness. Is your Sim up for the challenge?

time to start rocking this trend than Scary Day? Lips this bold can stand up to a little shadow. CAS on a sexy scar, and who is that dramatic Sim?

Black ReignDon’t just settle for black smudges. Go all out with serious black eyes like these truly majestic designer liners by XXXXX. Remember this look is all about the eyes. Keep the lips pale and simple. Contour with barely there blush. This designer blush should be the first thing you see, and the most memorable thing on her face.

Night VisionAnother trend that has seized the runway for the past few seasons are mono-chromatic make-up looks. Paler-than-pale cheeks, lips and eyes may not be your normal thing, but it’s a dramatic look for evening. Add a brush of soft pastel shadow in a muted shade. A little color goes a long way with this look and really stands out. Stark and eye-catching are so in!

Blood RoseNot just blood… ox-blood. Darkest red lips are hot this fall. What better

Page 150: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

Cape FearDon’t get us wrong, we’d never turn our back on the tried and true black liners and red lips. Classics are classics for a reason. Remember to tone down the opacity though. Those eyes should look smudged and blended, not dark and lined. Try a dark red shadow or a deep purple lip. Stay to the middle of the color wheel to keep those tones muted. Remember you want Gothic drama… not clownish comedy.

Take Gothic out of the dark ages. If your Sim is a girly-girl, seize the chance to try something new. That make-up tab isn’t an afterthought. It can finish your Sims’ look or even define it! Release your dark side. But be careful, fashionistas. Once you go Goth, you may never go back!

Rebuilding Build Mode From the

Ground UphMsDrco2001’s interview with siMs 4 BuilD MoDe DesiGner, AAron houts

Bill: I’m here with Aaron Houts who’s in charge of Interiors and Build Mode for the upcoming Sims 4. Thank you for talking with me today.

Aaron: Yeah, my pleasure.

Bill: Hearing the presentations from the team and seeing the demonstrations and photos, I really get the sense that you approached this game with a clean slate and a fresh perspective. What do you think are some of the most amazing new developments in the Sims 4 from a builder’s perspective?

Aaron: Well, yeah, you’re definitely right about that. This was a clean slate. It’s built from the ground up. And so in doing that--in starting fresh-- we really had an opportunity to look at how we could make this Build really unique and take it to the next level. So in building from the ground up, we looked at how it’s worked out in the past. We knew we were providing great creative tools with lots of depth to them, but we also knew that

people were intimidated about Build and might try it out and get kind of turned off by it and say, “You know what--I’m just going to go with pre-made stuff.” So there was this whole aspect of the game that a lot of our fans weren’t experiencing, and we wanted to get more people into it. When looking at the Sims 4 and building this from the ground up, we came up with this room system that you could build by. And so what this is is it allows you to very quickly and easily start putting together the structure of your house. It’s very flexible. You can resize stuff on the fly. You can pick up a room and move it to a different spot on the lot. You can move it to a different floor. And it’s really intuitive. It’s really fast. And it’s not intimidating. It’s hard to make mistakes. The tool just adapts to you rather than you having to fight against the tool. We’re really proud of how tactile and flexible we’ve been able to make this. We’ve seen some really positive responses.

Bill: What about from an interior designer’s perspective? What are some the most amazing

160

Ground Up

This was a clean slate. It’s built from the

ground up. And so in doing that--in starting fresh-- we really had an opportunity to look at how we could make this Build really unique and take it to the next level...

new features?

Aaron: From an interior perspective, we wanted to do a similar thing. A lot of people maybe don’t have a good decoration sense or are not quite sure what goes together, and so we have a section of the build tool called the magazine view, and this is pre-made, pre-styled rooms. And so you can go in and browse through--we have these beautiful pictures of the rooms, and you can click on the different objects and buy them individually. And when you do that, you know you’re buying from a styled set that goes together. So if I buy two things out of the same room, I know that that’s going to look good. It kind of guides me. It will guide and inspire you. But I can also just buy the entire room. And so I can take this pre-laid-out, pre-styled room. Like we’ve done the color selections for you. You can select different sets of colors and just place those down. It’s fully functional, and it just looks beautiful and it pops from the get-go. So from an interior perspective, we’ve done some of this pre-styling, but we’ve also been working with our assets to provide cohesive styles that go together. There are different furniture styles. I’m not going to go into too much detail right now on what those styles are, but you’ll know when you’re choosing from the catalog that these objects are part of a style that goes together. You don’t have to guess at what will look good together. You’re welcome to mix and match if you want to, but it’s easy for people to go in and find stuff that is going to look beautiful.

Bill: There are so many expectations and desires from fans for this new installment. How do you strike a balance between meeting those expectations while creating what appears to be a paradigm shift and new vision for the game?

Aaron: That’s a really good question. We’ve provided this really intuitive, really flexible, easy, fast way to build. But that doesn’t mean that we’ve ignored the details. For example, we’ve added some details that haven’t been in other Sims games. A great example is roof trims which is just this very subtle detail that goes along the edge of a roof. You can just add that personal touch. Or spandrels, which is kind of like a fence but on the ceiling. And we have these ornate kind of carved decorations of spandrels that you can put in to really personalize your porches and stuff like that. And there are friezes. Again, with a single click, I can pick a frieze style and then with a single click apply that to one of my rooms and see it just pop in around the top of the walls.

Bill: What do you foresee, if any, being the biggest adjustment for builders and designers who will be making the transition from The Sims 3 to The Sims 4?

Aaron: It’s actually kind of funny because the biggest adjustment is that our new tools are so easy and make things so flexible that you’re used to... for example, if you build something in

161

Page 162: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

We’ve provided this really intuitive,

really flexible, easy, fast way to build. But that doesn’t mean that we’ve ignored the details. For example, we’ve added some details that haven’t been in other Sims games...

Even if you’ve never been a

builder before, I think you’re going to love building in The Sims 4...

the wrong place, destroying it all and rebuilding. And so you have these habits of like “Oh, I did this wrong. I better delete it.” And you don’t have to do that. So it actually takes awhile before our hard-core builders realize that they don’t have to delete these things. You just make a quick adjustment, and then the room is where you want it to be. Another example of this is say I built my house, and I’m like, “Oh, shoot. I forgot the foundation.” Well, in previous games, again you have to delete everything and rebuild. In Sims 4, we’ve actually added a foundation height adjustment slider. And so I can just open that up after having built everything and just raise the foundation, and it will pop in underneath all my rooms. And also, very similar to that with staircases--as I adjust wall heights and foundation height, the stairs will adjust on the fly to meet those heights.

Bill: So there are different wall heights?

Aaron: Yes. We have three different wall heights. It’s another way that we’re allowing deep customization. You can get that really tall first floor for a really grand entrance.

Bill: And there will be windows and doors to match these heights?

Aaron: Yeah, we have different assets to take advantage of the different wall heights and just really provide that flexibility and that ease of use.

Bill: I know that Create-A-Style is not necessarily a component of The Sims 4 at this point, but will we have similar groupings of patterns that we had in The Sims 3 for wall and floor customization?

Aaron: In our patterns catalog, when you’re going to paint your house or apply textures to the foundation or anything that you want

162

Page 163: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

to colorize, we have your similar to Sims 3 categories like masonry, tile, and woodwork for the floors and stuff like that, but we also have a new way to filter the catalogs. I can say, “You know what--I’m kind of going for a red and blue color scheme,” and I can set the filters to only show the stuff that is red or blue. It’s an easy way, you know--we have so many different patterns in our catalog, it can be kind of a lot if you’re looking through everything. So it’s a great way to filter it down and focus on what you want to create.

Bill: Can you tell us more about the lighting? In the Sims 3, a light on a particular floor will not illuminate the floor above even if it’s not obstructed. Is that something that is going to be different with this new game engine?

Aaron: Yeah, our engineers have done some great

work with the lighting engine. If you have a double-story room, and you have lights on either the bottom or top floor, those lights will cast into both levels. It doesn’t cut off. It’s much more realistic with beautiful shadowing. It’s wonderful.

Bill: Can you tell me more about emotions that are attached to particular objects? Like what types of objects will have them?

Aaron: I can tell you a little bit about that. We’re still finalizing exactly how the content is going to be attached to which emotions, but the basic idea is that certain objects will be kind of infused with certain emotions. For example, if there’s a painting that looks a little flirty maybe, and I place that on the wall, when Sims are near that painting or are looking at it, that will affect

their emotions. And we’re hoping to expand that to many other objects, but we’re still finalizing which ones those will be. But yeah, the basic idea is that through the way that you construct your house and the types of objects that you use, that that will affect your Sim’s emotion and really add depth to the simulation that’s going on, the life that is created by the Sims living in that house.

Bill: Will art be shiftable on the walls?

Aaron: Yeah, so without cheats you’re able to move the paintings horizontally, obviously, and vertically, and you can have two paintings in the same horizontal space. Like one above the other. You don’t have to use a cheat to do that. Yeah, you just move it around the walls. And that’s great with the different wall sizes. If you go with the really tall wall sizes, you have a lot more room to work with. You can almost do art pieces of your own with the way you arrange the paintings and the lights. There’s a lot of opportunity there.

Bill: Is there anything that you feel like I missed that I should communicate to our readers?

Aaron: If I have one message to the readers, it’s that even if you’ve never been a builder before, I think you’re going to love building in The Sims 4 because we’ve made it so intuitive and so easy and flexible. It’s going to be great for our people who are builders. They’re going to love it. But the people who haven’t, I think that they’re going to be in for a really good surprise.

Bill: I really appreciate your time. Thank you so much.

Aaron: Oh, no problem. Thank you.

PHOTOGRAPHY by FREDDIEINTERVIEW by GISSENCE

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve gazed at one of Fredbrenny’s screenshots trying to tell myself this is not a real life photo…is it? Though we feature her architectural acumen here, she is no dunce in other disciplines like storytelling, scene composition, machinima, and Sim character creation. I feel utterly privileged to have a sidekick of her personal and creative caliber to do this craft along side.

G: Tell us a bit about yourself and your design approach to creating Sim environments.Freddie: I live in Amstelveen, The Netherlands and went to the Academy of Arts in Maastricht to study for 6 years. At the end of the second year, I changed my major from Public Arts to Interior Architecture & Design. That changed the way I look at our houses and the way we decorate them. As I did not become professionally engaged in the world of Architectural Design, what a blessing it was when the Sims came

along. My approach to building Sims houses is a professional one. I start by moving in a Sim right away, not only for testing purposes, but to see how the routing is, what will work best and fits the mood. This is why you will see such a big variety in my houses, from classic to ultra-modern and from quaint or cozy back to retro and antique. I build my houses from the inside out instead of visa versa. It’s like creating your subject (interior) then framing it (exterior) instead of first creating a frame (exterior) and then stuffing your subject (interior) inside it. This approach, as well as being an avid player, helps me to understand what pitfalls to avoid. The ‘Golden Ratio’ rule of architectural design is another odd thing I cannot leave alone. Implementing what I have learned and using the Create-A-Style tool makes creating houses for the Sims all worthwhile.

G: Do you favor or disfavor any aspect of creating Sims environments (decorating, exteriors, landscaping)?Freddie: No. All I need is time, and like with painting, I will take on the whole canvas. Another real- life function I translate into the game is landscaping because I cannot have a garden in real life. I will pay extra attention to the landscaping and can move a small flower bush around till I am green myself. I also like challenges like fancy roof work. The Baan Thai house I did is a good example of that. Creating scenes is another passion and has to do more with styling for a screenshot or machinima than with actual building. The use of lights, poses, a scene from

life as if it is a movie still, will keep me up many a night.

G: How did you come to start playing the Sims and building? Freddie: When I was a lot younger (before the computer era,) I used to draw houses, and even before that, I built my own dollhouses. So here comes The Sims… Heaven! I was hooked from day one. I happened to be home for an extended period of time, and playing the Sims was my great escape by just creating.

G: Is there a current project you’re working on? Freddie: Yes. You and I have our own website called SuumSim where we build and furnish Worlds with storylines interjected directly into the game play. The partnership started with a tomb project called Abnerfield and continued with the Fratres World project on TSR. When Fratres could not be hosted on TSR, we decided to create a website so this two-

year project could see the light of day. Our current project is called Entworld. It’s nestled into a thickly wooded hollow surrounded by mountains. It plays off the idea of a world cohabited by plant Sims, fairies, normal Sims, honey production…and societal cross-pollination (hmm). Numerous unique builds are already done, others are on the drawing table. Some custom content is being made to work in harmony with some very unique builds in the fairy forest. We hope to be wrapping it up around year’s end.

G: From where do you draw inspiration?Freddie: I draw inspiration from daily

life. I’ve traveled around the world and love observing, meeting, and socializing with people. I like reading and I love movies. I have a vivid imagination and can find inspiration in almost everything. I have been drawing and building houses from when I was little. I guess it is something I NEED to do rather than I want to do.

G: What is your outlook for the future of builders in Sims 4?Freddie: That would be hard to say. I do hope there will be CAW and Tombs. Cellars, round walls, curved stairs, and split levels, the ability to build higher than 3 stories. But I guess we will have to wait and see. EA better NOT take my Create-A-Style tool away. I would be so sad… I like nuances in life, and therefore, my Sims houses need nuances too, not only in shape, but also in color and texture.

G: Any advice you would like to share with our readers and prospective builders?Freddie: Play your own creations, especially when you want to share it with the Community. Lots with routing issues, inaccessible floors or objects are a pain for the game player. Therefore, test your lots thoroughly. It is not just about creating a pretty box. It is your home of your Sims. Try to imagine who is going to live there. And then you will be able to catch the essence of it and create something unique!

Opulence, macabre and drama make for the ideal ambiance for a modern gothic reading room. Where tradi t ional gothic sty le can be heavy, overbear ing and claustrophobic, our modern approach combines classic ornate elements wi th s leek modern textures and elegant fabr ics. Dark, r ich tones are key, but don’ t be afraid to toss in a punch of colour for drama.

Thank you so much for taking time to speak with us. I’m excited to get to know you better. Tell

us a little bit about yourself.

I’m an ancient creator of Useless Things at The Sims Resource – mostly rusty, broken or downright tasteless stuff. I began this bad habit in Sims 2 where I made entire urban/industrial neighbourhoods with lots and content themed around disused factories, run-down apartment blocks and such – a habit that spread into Sims 3. I love gaming generally (not just Sims) and play all sorts of games. However, The Sims is unique inasmuch as I wanted to create the game’s content more than I wanted to play the game.

I must say I’ve been a fan of your creations for a long time. Many are staples in my game that I use often to achieve an

urban or run-down look for certain builds. Where do you draw inspiration for your work?

My creating always starts by seeing one small detail like a bare light-bulb under a down-town viaduct or a rusted junction box near a rail track. I then create that small scene in The Sims and build around it until I’ve made some made-up scene incorporating that initial detail. This always seems to work better than trying to make some huge project (for me).

How long have you been playing the Sims, and what do you like most about the game?

I played Sims 1 avidly from day of release through to the launch of Sims 2. During Sims 2, I switched from playing to creating and never looked back!

Tell me more about your creative process. Do you use

photographs as a reference? How long does it take for you to create particular objects?

My lots are total fiction, and the only objects I make are those I need for each lot I’m making. I typically take 1 – 3 weeks to make a more detailed mesh, mostly because I’m an annoying perfectionist and will keep whipping the object in and out of my game until I’m happy with it. As a result, a complete set can take 6 – 8 weeks minimum.

What advice do you have for anyone who might want to start creating their own custom content for the game?

Keep it simple! In meshing, try to use shading to create detail rather than additional polygons. If you need excessive polygon counts, then you’re either doing it wrong or trying to make something too complex.

175

Page 176: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

Avoid being ‘technically clever’ with CFE building cheats or complex object slots. Imagination and originality are what gets noticed. Downloaders don’t tend to care about ‘clever’.

Steer clear of the ‘brag value’ in adding a difficult slot or a lighting effect to something where there wasn’t one just to be clever. Same with lot building: impressive masterpieces can be made with the much-lauded CFE cheat, but this restricts badly what the player can do with your creation.

It’s not what you use, it’s what you make that counts. Many veterans (myself included) use very simple programs for creating. An expensive program only automates what you have to do by hand in a cheaper program.

What other Sims creators do you admire or consider as mentors?

Inge Jones of Simlogical. Inge always pushed the barriers of what was possible in the game right from Sims 1 days, and I would download her mods and hacks, make buildings for them, then wish I could also create all the custom content for some of her ideas (like her incredible prison mods).

Have you ever collaborated with other creators to make particular content or builds?

No. The Sims Resource has run themes to which I’ve usually added something. Mostly though, I prefer to work alone. I make too much fuss about things being done MY way or not at all, which is pretty horrible so I’m best shoved in a corner somewhere to do my own thing!

Reflecting on your experience with the Sims, how much time would you say that you’ve spent playing the game as opposed to creating for the game?

I’d say 98% creating versus 2% playing. I played Sims 1 a fair bit, so that was about 50-50. Sims 2 was very enjoyable to play, but the creating bug had well and truly bitten by then. The Sims 3 has been 100% about creating.

Looking to the future, are there particular features or changes to the game that you would like to see in the upcoming Sims 4?

I would give my eye teeth for a return to a more flexible town model. Sims 3’s prettiness is fine if you want to recreate “Real Housewives of Orange County”, but I miss the sci-fi planetary wastelands we could make from Sims 2’s deserts, and the vast urban, run-down sprawls of dystopia we could make with buildings crammed together with only narrow alleyways between. I don’t play Sims 3 at all as a result and have found myself creating less and less (that might be a GOOD thing

176

Page 177: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22
Page 178: SF MAGAZINE Vol 1, Issue 22

for the community)! My ideal would be a joining of Sims 2 and 3 (the in-game texturing and tools of Sims 3 coupled with some better-designed worlds that allow for much improved freedom, flexibility and imagination).

Would you like to share any closing thoughts with our readers and fans of your work?

Just a huge and grateful thanks for downloaders, fans

and fellow creators alike – especially for the laughs you’ve given me! With a site with such high visibility as TSR, I can find as many as 1200-1500 new comments between visits so I don’t get chance to reply to many, but that doesn’t mean I don’t read and appreciate them – so thank you. I likely would have given up ruining The Sims long ago had so many people not encouraged me – so yes, it’s all your fault!

Backstory...

Hello there friend,

Are you sick of feeling out of place?• Sick of feeling bad that there’s no

one around like you?• Sick of those smiling neighbors

telling you to enjoy the “sunset” in the “valley?”

Then come to Midnight Hollow where it’s good to be one of a kind!

Life is hard and people will always have something to say about you. “All of her husbands die mysteriously and suddenly” or “I think her son was fathered by the grim reaper” or “I’m pretty sure she’s a murderer” ...Where do they come up with this stuff??

I moved here to get away from the “normal” life to find a life that’s normal for me. Let them have their “starlights” and “shores,” I’ll take my century-old victorian mansion, eerie landscape and interesting neightbors every time.

Here’s hoping you’re next! - I meant being my new neighbor; not the whole murder thing FYI.

See you at Midnight Hollow!
