Note: These are general guidelines only.

*TSB-1025 should be used to identify the specific loads to the correct alternator. *All alternators are self excited. If the vehicle has an ignition circuit it should be capped off and protected since that circuit is not needed.*Older model A/C’s draw more current than present models.*Contact Leece-Neville Technical Services for frequent use of wheel chair operations for more than 2 A/C systems on a 2007 and later emmission vehicle. *The colder climate operation will draw considerably more amerage from the battery bank which should be considered when matching the charging system.*ADA requirements in general will demand more amperage from the charging system. *ADA and extreme climates, hot or cold, will demand much more.

School buses are the safest mode of transportation for getting children back and forth to school. This alone keeps an annual estimated 17.3 million cars off roads surrounding schools each morning.Today’s school buses are tougher and more diligently maintained than ever before to meet government guidelines.

NO THROTTLE-BACK REGULATOR Some competitor’s alternators output will reduce when the unit gets hot. This function protects the alternator at the expense of other electrical equipment. Our alternators are designed to survive high heat applications while providing full output.

Leece-Neville’s alternators exceed this requirement with their approved true high temperature applications of 125oC.

OUTPUT AT IDLE The alternator on a school bus spends the vast majority of its working life operating at very low speeds. Most school bus alternators usually operate at about 2,000 rpm and seldom get above 4,000 rpm. The only important rating is the amount of power that the alternator can produce while the engine is idling. Don’t be misconceived by the ‘maximum’ rating by the competitors’ that their application will never achieve.

SAFETY INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS One important factor to passing the required daily DOT safety inspection is the lights. Heaters or A/C’s is another factor, most times with the engine idling. This requires a large amount of power from the alternator at a relatively low speed. In order to achieve the output school buses require, an alternator with large enough amperage is needed to meet the demands of these electrical loads, as well as having the capacity to replenish the battery in a timely manner.
