The AAPL first focused on the issue ofobtaining commissions of official portraits forAmerican Artists, By using its national stature) theAAPL influenced a rider to a Congressional Bill stipu~lacing that all official portraits paid for with taxpayers)dollars were to be painted by American artists) a factthat remains in effect to this day

By securing a fund from thecamegie corporation Endowment Fund, a program ofcolor pigment research was established for the AAPL.It was completed in 1932), making the AAPL thecountry)s leading authority on artists, pigments at thattime. Each year, hundreds of applicants from all 50states in all media submit their work for review by aselection committee consisting ofprofessional artistsin the fields of oil) watermedia) pastel and graphicsand sculpture.

By Board resolution in 1958) the AAPL creat~ed the American Artists Fund) an arm of the organiza~lion specifically designed for educational and charita~ble purposes+ Through private and corporate dona~lions and contributions to the Fund) the AAPL spon~sors its Grand National Exhibition and awards scho1~arships to college level students studying Americanart. This year, the AAPL will award over $10,000in prizes to exhibitors and has marked $2)000 forcollege scholarships+
