As you are aware, the Governor of Pennsylvania has transitioned some counties in the state including Snyder County into the YELLOW phase. The Diocese has given us permission to restore public worship at St. Pius X Church and has given us a detail listing of provisions and guidelines.

Initially, St. Pius X will celebrate Mass on Saturdays at 5 pm and Sundays at 10 am. Daily Mass will be celebrated at 9 am in the Adoration Chapel unless social distancing cannot be maintained. In that case, it will be moved and celebrated in the Church.

Here are some key points you need to know.

• Dispensation from the Sunday Obligation and Holy Days of Obligations hereby continues to be granted and remains in effect until further notice.

• The faithful, should they not attend Mass are encouraged to devote themselves to prayer for a suitable time alone or as a family. The precept to receive Holy Communion at least once a year during Easter Season is hereby dispensed.

• Those who are sick, caring for someone who is sick or experiencing symptoms should refrain from attending Mass.

• Please enter the Church by the side entrance by the Adoration Chapel. You will exit through the front

doors.

• Please obey “no parking” areas by Chapel entrance. This is a fire lane and should not be blocked.

• You are encouraged to use hand sanitizer before entering the Church and prior to the reception of Holy Communion. You are encouraged to bring your own hand sanitizer so that it may be used as needed.

• Face masks are to be worn by all lay faithful who attend Mass. Please supply your own mask. The only time face masks are to be removed is when the reader proclaims the Word of God, the cantor leads the congregation and when the faithful receives Holy Communion. The priest will only wear a mask for the distribution of Holy Communion.

• Gloves should not be worn for the reception of Holy Communion.

• Social distancing is to be practiced, keeping six feet between individuals/families. Families may sit together. The Ministers of Hospitality will seat people. Families will be seated in the wings.

• All formal and informal gatherings before or after Mass are strictly prohibited.

• Hymnals will not be used at this time.

• No offering will be taken up. A collection basket will be available for offerings in the rear of the Church or you may continue to mail your donations to the parish office.

• The sign of peace is omitted.

• After the dismissal or final hymn, the Ministers of Hospitality will help the assembly form a Communion procession beginning in the rear of the Church, using the norm of 6 feet between communicants. The priest will distribute Communion in the Narthex. Each communicant approaches to receive Holy Communion with their mask lowered. They may receive in the hand or on the tongue. You are encouraged to receive in the hand for greater caution.

• Those who have received Holy Communion are permitted to return to their pew to make a thanksgiving to God before they leave the Church. All will leave once Communion is over. Please exit through the front doors maintaining the six feet spacing.

• All holy water fonts will remain empty.

• Sales of religious items (book/pamphlets) is suspended.

• Access to lighting votive candles is suspended.

• If you wish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, please call the parish office to schedule a time for confession.

• Supermarket gift cards will be sold in the parish office during regular business hours. Please call so we may have your order ready. There will be no sales before or after Mass.

• Bulletins will not be distributed at Mass. They will be emailed and mailed.

Keeping the Lord’s Day Holy: Sunday Prayer at Home

Introductory Rites A hymn may be sung. Then, making the Sign of the Cross, the family begins:

Penitential Act

Leader: Coming together as God’s family, with confidence let us acclaim the Father’s forgiveness, for God is full of gentleness and compassion. Lord Jesus, you heal the sick. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you forgive sinners. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you feed us with your Body and Blood. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

Leader: Let us pray.

O God, who willed that our infirmities be borne by your Only Begotten Son to show the

value of human suffering, listen in kindness to our prayers for our brothers and sisters

who are sick; grant that all who are oppressed by pain, distress or other afflictions may

know that they are chosen among those proclaimed blessed and are united to Christ in

his suffering for the salvation of the world.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of

the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Gloria:

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will....

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading : Acts of the Apostles 1:12-14.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 27:1, 4, 7-8.

Second Reading : 1 Peter 4:13-16.

Gospel: John 17:1-11a.

Shared Faith Reflections

Families should spend some time discussing and reflecting on the meaning of the readings and help each other to see God’s

message for them at this time. Everyone could share something that was meaningful or especially important.

Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

Leader: We gather today to celebrate the Lord’s Day. We are unable to be with our par-

ish family. However, one with our brothers and sisters at St. Pius X Parish, and

with the entire Church, let us now listen to God’s Word and join in prayer.

In trial or difficulty I have recourse to Mother Mary, whose glance alone is enough to dissipate every fear.-St. Thérèse of Lisieux

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

At the words that follow, up to and including the Virgin Mary, all bow. who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Intercessions Inspired by the readings and the needs of the family, the Church, and the world, members

propose special intentions and invite everyone to say, “Lord, hear our prayer.”

The Lord’s Prayer is recited by all.

Act of Spiritual Communion Explaining that Jesus will come to anyone who invites Him, the family

then recites together the Act of Spiritual Communion followed by a period of quiet prayer.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Thanksgiving After a period of silence, the following Psalm is recited together. Psalm 116 I trusted, even when I said: "I am sorely afflicted," and when I said in my alarm: "No man can be trusted."

How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise; I will call on the Lord's name. My vows to the Lord I will fulfill before all his people.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful.

Your servant, Lord, your servant am I; you have loosened my bonds. A thanksgiving sacrifice I make; I will call on the Lord's name. My vows to the Lord I will fulfill before all his people, in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Blessing Making the Sign of the Cross, we say together: May the Lord bless us, protect us from evil, and bring us into everlasting life. Amen.

A concluding hymn may be sung.

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Undoubtedly, during these days you have heard someone reference the opening lines of Charles

Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of

wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was

the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of

despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we

were all going direct the other way.” Not only one of literature’s oft-quoted passages, these words

speak something of the human experience in every age when struck by “the joy and hope, the grief and

anguish of the men and women of our time, especially of those who are poor or afflicted in any way

(Gaudium et spes, 1).”

These are days which test us in many ways. Such tests often bring out the best and worst in us. They

stretch us to our limits, not to break but to expand our capacity to love, hope, and believe. And, there is

much good to acknowledge and celebrate. We can see in ourselves and in those around us the best of

human care and concern, a flourishing of prayer and deepening of the spiritual life, as well as many

other signs of wisdom and light to brighten our day. Together, we struggle to fight against the despair

and darkness that come with a sense of helplessness and frustration. Here, the fight itself manifests the

“best in us” as we claim our call to live as “children of the light and of the day (1 Thess 5:5).”

As the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania begins the slow and arduous transitioning toward the next

phase of this crisis, we, too, as the Church in southcentral Pennsylvania begin to chart our path forward.

Directives have been given to our parishes for the possibilities available to them in this next step. Some

may judge these to be overly cautious. However, they are prudent and careful steps toward the

restoration of public worship. In compliance with the directives of the Governor and the Department of

Health, each parish will begin to move forward. This transition will require time and patience.

We must all consider the demands of charity and justice. The commandment of charity, to love, is at the

heart of Christian life. The virtue of charity creates within us a selfless and other-focused love that

begins with God and extends to our neighbors. The closing of the churches and their slow reopening is

not an expression of fear but charity and concern for the well-being of the many who gather in our

sacred spaces. We are responsible for one another, our “brother’s keeper,” as Genesis (4:9) reminds us.

Our rights and desires are never to be exercised at the price of another’s safety. The law of charity must

prevail and the current crisis provides a rich opportunity to demonstrate this.

Page 7: Seventh Sunday of Easter May 24, 2020 - St. Pius X ...€¦ · 04/05/2013  · Emily Artman Robert Christian Denise Hale Wayne McGraw Gabriella O’Shea Rosemary Robinson Steve Strocko

SINGER WANTED Joyful Noise is interested in adding an Alto voice to its group (keyboard skills would be awesome)! Please contact Mike Andretta at 570-850-2685 if you are interested.

To that end, out of charity and justice to our neighbors, I ask that as our parish churches reopen and transition to public worship in this Yellow Phase, parishioners attend their own parish churches and respect the stay-at-home order for those who remain in the Red Phase according to the designation by the State Government. Not only does this prevent the comingling of persons outside each county, it allows fair access to their parish churches. As this restoration spreads throughout the Diocese of Harrisburg, each parishioner will have his or her opportunity to return.

I am aware of the sacrifices you have made throughout this quarantine, not only in the practice of your faith life, but also in your families and communities. This instruction is not intended to add to your burdens. Please know that, along with all the clergy, I am eager to return to some normalcy in our liturgical and sacramental lives. As grateful as I have been to celebrate each Sunday with so many of you from our Cathedral broadcast, it is heartbreaking to process to the altar through an church empty. This was especially so during Holy Week. Yet, these sacrifices are offered in charity because our respect for the dignity of every human life needs to be grounded in our practical actions.

Each parish will be formulating a plan for the gradual restoration of public worship. Your pastor has been asked to work with pastoral staff and parish lay leadership to develop a plan that is prudent and fitting for each circumstance. If you have any expertise that could help in this task, please contact your pastor and offer your wisdom and experience.

As we have entrusted ourselves once more to the Blessed Mother on the first day of this month, I invoke once more her protection and intercession upon all of God’s People here in the Diocese of Harrisburg. May she keep us from danger, teach us the path of virtue, and lead us closer to her Son.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer

PENTECOST SUNDAY Sunday, May 31, 2020 is Pentecost Sunday, which is considered the birthday of the Church. A special envelope is included in your monthly packet. This collection will support our seminarians in their formation and ordained deacons and priests. Please be as generous as possible. Each year, the Church celebrates fifty days of Easter, culminating at the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost marks the occasion of God’s sending the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ disciples after his Resurrection. Before Pentecost, the disciples were unsure of what they were to do next and spent most of their time in hiding. After Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit, they understood their mission to spread the Good News of Jesus, and they had the courage to come out of hiding and speak openly about who Jesus was and what he had accomplished by his dying and rising. Because Pentecost brought the disciples this clarity of mission, it is regarded as the founding feast of the Christian Church. Before Pentecost, the disciples of Jesus are tentative and disorganized. After Pentecost, they are a people with a mission who perceive themselves as spiritually and sacramentally connected to the Risen Christ.
