It is Poojya Gurudev’s vision that farming in India should have sustainable practices in place to ensure nutritional security for the nation as well as provide better livelihood to farm based families.

SSIAST has taken number of initiatives to promote sustainable practices with the help of volunteers and agriculture teachers who are helping farmers in the rural areas to adopt organic farming methods in agriculture.

On 11th March 2016, Delhi, in the presence of Poojya Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and Sri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, 51 farmers were felicitated with “Krishi Ratna” award,

Considering their outstanding contribution in the field of agriculture, practising natural farming to develop their land and water resources and increasing their agricultural production.

At his farm in Kuzhikattusery in Trissur, Yuvacharya T. G. Subramanian is nurturing 37 desi cows. He has distributed 400 desi cows to households across Kerala. Cow varieties include Vechuri, Kapila, Black Kapila, Malanad and Kasargod. They conduct state-level workshops on desi cow and explain how nurturing this cow is integrated with natural farming methods. People from different parts of Kerala visit Subramanian’s farm seeking advice on desi cow protection and natural farming. Desi cow-based medicines like panchagavya, tooth powder, facepack, ear drops, soaps and eye drops are manufactured and marketed, making farming self-sustaining. These medicines are capable of curing 1000 types of diseases including cancer, hypertension, heart ailments, mental disorder, etc. They are low cost, affordable and hence useful for the society.

Awareness about desi cows is spread by a group of YLTP Yuvacharya Sunder the leadership of Subrahmanian and Ramachandran in Thrissur district. It is known as ‘Gramalakshmi Go Adharit Sarvaiswarya Parishad. The vision of the team members is ‘One desi cow in each home.’ Subrahmanian says, “Nurturing a non-desi cow is very expensive but keeping a desi cow is inexpensive. It requires only grass and water. At the same time, while a non-desi cow ghee costs Rs 350 per kg, desi cow ghee costs Rs. 2000. We have 5–10 desi cows but still not able to provide enough ghee to fulfil the demand of the public.” Ramachandran says, “It has been 5 years since we started this project here. The initial step was to bring a desi cow from a place called Monadi, Kodaly. So, we brought a desi

calf which was found in the forest. In the mean time we got an opportunity to learn Zero budget natural farming method by Subhash Palekar. We conducted the workshops in Ashtamichira village in Thrissur and Kottayam district. We implemented his methods under the project titled ‘Gurugramam’ at Kuzhikkattussery village in Thrissur. Later we brought cows from Kasaragod district of Kerala and Karnataka state. Now, we are capable of delivering desi cows to the needy. People come here and buy.”

Subrahmanian’s wife Ajitha also supports him in this work. Ajitha was honoured as the best farmer at Aloor Gram Panchayat in 2013 in Kerala Piravi Customer Meet. Mr Subrahmanian was honoured with Gorakshak Puraskar by Harisre Vidya Niketan, Thumboor during the Onam celebration 2012-2013.

Sri Sri Rural Development Programme (A Trust of Art of Living) has started Sri Sri Kaushal Vikas Kendra at Lalgunj in Bardhaman district, West Bengal. The refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) skills training programme and electrical skills training programme were started to provide placement opportunity to the villagers. The faculty has a lab, classroom and office which can accommodate a batch of 30 persons per program. The workshops are equipped

with RAC, electrical training equipment and consumables required for training 50 persons every month. The course curriculum and equipment have been sourced from training partners, Godrej and Schneider Electric Foundation. Bardhaman is considered a backward District by GOI, besides it is also referred to as the minority district of West Bengal. The selected villages are located in the vicinity of the mines & the beneficiaries are largely farmers

who have given up their farm lands and forefather’s means of livelihood to make way for the mines. As such, there is a need to increase overall employability of the population residing in that area. This needed a sustainable intervention which should entail technical skill building and other development activities. The target community was the inhabitants of the villages surrounding the Coal Mining areas. The target is to train 100 people per year.

Jalgaon (Maharashtra):There are many devotees of Khandoba god in Maharashtra as well as Karnataka, from poor to the rich all of them have a strong belief in Khandoba god. During the Holi festival they have a fair from 24th – 31st March.

Every year this fair is held and even the people from foreign

countries visit here. After the yatra ends lots of garbage is scattered everywhere.

The Art of Living volunteers took an initiative to make this place clean again. The cleanliness campaign was held on 3rd April. This campaign was done under the leadership of YLTP teacher Madhav Gavai.

Khadki (Maharashtra):

This village was famous for providing water to nearby 10

to 12 villages, since 3 years this village has been facing severe drought, to overcome this problem the villagers joined hands with The Art of Living. The work was done on increasing the storage capacity of the Narola River. 100-200 ft widening and 15ft deepening work was done. The funds were collected from villagers, NGO’s and from The Art of living. On 20thMay 2015 this project was completed.

Unfortunately, there was not adequate rainfall last year and the storage was not sufficient. There was water scarcity again this year. In order to resolve this problem, the government released water from the nearest Jayakwadi dam. Around 1 crore litres of water was stored, this led to increase in the water level, water came in to the wells, bore wells and hand pumps. Animals and birds are also seen around the river now.

Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh) The Art of living joined hands with Kent RO to build 60 toilets in Inayatgarhi village in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh. The toilet construction started in 2015, after the village was identified during the “Vote for better India” campaign in 2014. Today 30 ration card holder households have got access to the toilets. The toilets are embedded with lights, flooring, iron doors, water and other modern facilities. RO water purifiers are also distributed to 80 families

of the village. Various stress free programmes, cleanliness campaigns, medical camps, de-addiction programmes and other social programmes were also organized by The Art of Living teacher Vikram Raghuvanshi. Inayatgarhi is considered backward because of weak education and economic ground. They depend upon agriculture for their bread and butter. Women were bound to go for open defecation. Now, The Art of Living has adopted this village to transform it into a model village.

While discussing the future plans Vikram said that they will be starting projects like natural farming, schools, nurturing of cow along with organizing sports competition for the sports lovers. Everyone’s focus is to make this village a model village. A village resident Nitin Vashishth said “The programme will enable the the villagers to be free from the diseases. Women will also feel safe as they don’t have to defecate outside. The Art of Living contribution is commendable.”

Relief from Drought Water storage capacity increased of Narola River

Making of a Model Village, Inayatgarhi

272 villages to be benefitted by Kumudvati River

rejuvenation Farmers are getting back to farming

Man has become so selfish that he is destroying the nature. The rainfall has decreased due to deforestration. Now a days, water is polluted in large scale. The water sources like rivers, canals, wells and ponds are drying up. The ground water level has also decreased. We are only consuming the natural resources. We are not restoring it for our future generations.

There are 272 villages that rely on Kumudvati River for their domestic needs. Since, 20 years the water of Kumudvati River is drying up and the villagers are affected by this. Many had to change their occupation and many lost their lives.

The rejuvenation of Kumudvati river by The Art of Living has shown a new ray of hope not only to all the human beingsbut also to animals, birds and trees.

One of the villagers said that, “When I was young there was abundant water available here and all the animals use to come and drink the holy water of Kumudvati. Now I am feeling my childhood days are back as the water level of the river is raising. I am very happy to see this.’

On the completion of the first phase of the project we would like to share the story of our beneficiary Muniyappa, 38 years old from Adihasaharlle village said” as there was no water

available Ileft doing agriculture and I took up a job as a worker in a nearby factory. One day I discovered that my bore well got recharged and there was water in it. So I decided to start agriculture again. The profit earned by farming has been increased by 50%. I am growing banana, tomato, beans and other kinds of vegetables. I express my gratitude for rejuvenating Kumudvati. This project is been supported by HAL, IAHV, BOSCH. The government is also concerned about the environment and have launched many projects for the betterment of the environment but sometimes they are not able to complete it. One of the reason is lack of manpower. Government should join hands with NGO’s who are working to save environment. The Art of Living is one of the few NGO’s who is working for the betterment of tomorrow. We have rejuvenated 18 rivers all over India. Kumudvati river rejuvenation project is going on for the last 3 years. We have built many water tanks and water pools to save the water from flowing away and evaporation. Storing water in these water pools and water tanks helps percolation of water and the ground water table gets recharged. Beside this project we are also planting many trees.

Chikmagalur, Karnataka:On 4thApril 2016, the First Aid Training was given to villagers by the Art of Living in the Vedvati river Rejuvenation office. Dr. Sunder Gowda inaugurated the event. He is chairman of Youth Red Cross and a very famous doctor.

They have launched the emergency helpline contact number for the villagers. The training was given by Dr. C. N Venkatesh, International professor. He said “when accident has happened first action should be First Aid. There is lack of medical facilities in the villages

so the youths should take an initiative to learn the First Aid and spread this knowledge. It can save lives of many people”. The training was also included how to treat the common diseases, Emergency cases and Snake bite. They distributed the first aid kits to the farmers free of cost.

Muradabaad (Uttar Pradesh), if you have a strong will of achieving spectacular success you can achieve it with right guidance and hard work. The great example of this we can see in the life of Munna Singh, 60 yrs from Hirapur. He said “Our ancestors gave us beautiful gift of doing farming with zero budget but as the time passed we forgot and did farming using pesticides. I took the training of natural farming in the year 2014 and realized that natural farming is very beneficial and we must adopt it. I started doing natural farming

in my 3 acres farm, sowed the seeds of mustard and sugarcane and amazing results were found. Sugarcane was grown in larger amount and mustard was of 12 quintal in approx. 3 acres of land.Effects of chemical farming:Natural farming is more beneficial than Chemical farming as per the above report. Munna Singh thanks the art of living and apex member Santosh Kapoor and teacher Veena Mishra. They took the initiative of making people aware of the benefits of Natural farming. They introduced natural

farming in this village. Now the villagers are very happy. The farmers are ready to do Natural farming and they want to grow various crops and vegetables. Natural farming not only benefits the consumers but it also improves the quality of the soil.Kisan Omveer Singh says that we are destroying the earth by using the chemical fertilizers from past 45 years and are seeing the adverse effects of it now, there is lack of nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc in the soil.

Amazing profits earned by the yield of Crops by Natural Farming Method

Banada/Agra (Uttar Pradesh): Due to the increase in the rate of population the urbanization is taking place and the deforestation has increased rapidly. The Art of Living has taken up the initiative to keep the planet green. Each one plant one tree and nurture it till it grows fully. We can gift a green planet to the future generation.

Environment is the basis of our life. We take pledge that we will plant “at least one tree in our life and will nurture it till it grows fully”. We will also encourage our friends and others to take this initiative, so

that the future generation will have a better tomorrow.

This initiative was started by Vimlesh Rathod and Prof. Neeta Chopra. They started this initiative of saving environment in the year 2007. They are doing plantation in the streets, colleges and villages with the involvement of the general public. They are also spreading awareness of “No use of plastic and Keep the environment litter free”. They have planted more than 20,000 tress of neem, tulsi and medicinal plants.

Janpadkaragar, Bnanda: In this jail, the use of polythene is banned. It’s a very good initiative taken by the jail inmates. This was done under the leadership of Vimlesh Rathod, Art of living teacher in the year 2010. The use of polythene is still banned in this jail.

Model farm to save mother earth

In Bnanda district and Buldenkhand initiatives are being taken to save mother

earth from poisonous things, the level of ground water is very low and one of the main reason being deforestation. Vimleshji has motivated people to adopt natural farming and desi cows. She has successfully trained thousands of people with Balkrishnaji and is also involved in the government project ofmaking 750 acres of land into a model farm. This is done under paramparagat krushi vikas project.

Kalyanagar (Orrisa):The villagers residing here are not having facility of safe drinking water. The villagers were drinking unfiltered water from past many years. The villagers were suffering due to many water borne diseases. They were unaware of safe drinking water. The awareness program of drinking safe water was conducted by Dr. P.S Manjeshwari. He explained the benefits of drinking safe water and also explained the disadvantages of drinking untreated water. Free medical

camp was also the part of this program. This program was organized by the teachers and volunteers of the art of living and the art of living state co-coordinator Bholenath Jena.During this program, SSRDP distributed Tetra filters to 46 families on 30th March. ‘Banali is a village in Jathtaluka of Sangli District in Maharashtra (India). There is water scarcity all over the state. Especially animals and birds starve due to thirst and many die due to heat. The children of Sri Sri Gyan Mandir studying in 3rd standard learnt the method of hydrophonic food The School students asked the teacher can

we practically do this. Students along with the teacher started the project and this was of great success. They named this fodder as ‘Oola Chaara’(wet fodder). This fodder can be given to cow, buffalo, goat and sheep. This success news spread like a wave. The farmers from nearby villages came and learned the procedure.

Popat Shinde, Shegaon said we are inspired by the invention of wet fodder. It is easy to make at home and at a cheap rate, by this we will get nutritious fodder in less time, by eating hydrophonic food the health of the animals will improve and we don’t have to spend more on the supplements. Our expense will also be less leading to higher savings.

Hydroponics is a subset of hydro culture and is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral solution only, or in an inert medium,

such as perlite or gravel .
