Richard Grenville Sailed from Plymouth, England through the West Indies and arrived at Cape Lookout on June 23, and later to Roanoke Island.

Important people to know
Richard Grenville Sailed from Plymouth, England through the West Indies and arrived at Cape Lookout on June 23, and later to Roanoke Island.

Thomas Harriot A scientist on board Grenville’s ship
John White An Artist who drew the first maps of Roanoke region.
Ralph Lane Became the governor of the Roanoke Colony. He explored the region and had negative relationship with the Natives in the region.
Wingina The son and Indian Chief that was originally friendly to the colonists, but he began to disliked the English and planned to murder Lane and the rest of the Colonists, but the colonists attacked his village first and beheaded Wingina.

2. What did White and the colonists find on Roanoke Island? They found almost no trace of the 15 men left there the year before and that the fort had been destroyed
3. Why did the colonists attempt to settle again on Roanoke Island Because the pilot refused to take them to the Chesapeake
4. Define the word Croatoan, name an important Croatoan and who was he (hint: he became the Lord of Roanoke) Croatoan was the friendly group of Native Americans that lived in the area. As a reward for his help Manteo helped the settlers and was named the Lord of Roanoke.

Reasons for Settlement of Jamestown• Virginia Company (the biggest trading company)

Questions Answer
Drinking water was impure and mosquitoes spread diseases. Food was scarce and some colonists were attacked by Native Americans
It was 30 miles up stream and protected by land on three sides. This caused the Virginia Company’s ships could easily bring supplies and more colonists. The settlement was also hidden from Spanish Ships along the shore
The Virginia Company did not send enough food and the did not grow enough supplement
Had strict rules that required all colonists to farm. Also had temporary peace with the Native Americans (Powhatans)
