Current Policy Settings Streams And Products

• Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL).• A list of skilled occupations in shortage nationally and applicants can work to

residence.• Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL)• List of skilled occupations in current shortage by region• Canterbury Skills Shortage List• Contains occupations in critical shortage, related to the Canterbury rebuild.• Labour Market Test• Use this option if occupation and qualifications/experience of candidate are not on

a skill shortage list.• Working Holiday Scheme• New Zealand has working holiday schemes for citizens of 42 countries.

Variation of Conditions (VoC)

• Apply for a Variation of Conditions (VoC) if employee holds: - an employer-specific work visa and wishes to change employers (but not

job type) within same location specified on work visa or

- a Work to Residence visa (accredited employer) and wishes to change jobs with current employer or change to another Accredited employer (must

continue to meet minimum salary requirements).

• Apply for a new work visa if: - want to change the job type (e.g. a promotion or job roles are combined).

This applies even if the new position is with the same employer or

- the applicant wishes to move to a different location to that specified on work visa.

Christchurch Area Office and the Canterbury Skills and Employment Hub

Launched in November 2012, the Canterbury Skills and Employment Hub (the Hub) seeks:

• To help employers access local sources of skills and labour.• Where suitable or trainable New Zealanders cannot be found, to

meet firms’ labour and skills needs through migrant labour.• The Hub works towards these goals by front-end loading of the

Labour Market Test for immigration purposes. • This means that the labour market test takes place earlier, ideally

before the employer has contacted possible migrant workers.

Some of the common barriers we see that will delay the processing of an application are:

• Medicals out of date• Medical requires referral to Immigration New Zealand Medical Assessor• Police certificate out of date• Applicant declares character issues• Form not completed correctly or not signed• No letter of support from Canterbury Skills and Employment Hub when

required• Supporting documents not originals or certified

• Anyone giving immigration advice, needs a licence (unless exempt). Immigration NZ will not accept applications from unlicensed advisers.
