Setting up a Twitter account

Go to www.twitter.com

Click ‘sign-up’ at the top right on the Twitter homepage. This page changes every day, so may look a bit different. But the ‘sign-up’ and ‘log in’ buttons will still be visible at the top right of the page.

Add your name, email and password and click ‘Sign up’.

You will then be asked to add a phone number – this is optional.

You will be automatically assigned a username (also called aTwitter handle), which is your Twitter name, based on your name e.g. John12345.

Other users will be able to Tweet directly to you using thisusername by adding the @ symbol before your name e.g.@John12345. You can change your handle at any time in your settings. You can see where this is located on page 06.

Add your profile picturehere. This is normally apicture of yourself.All IOSH Network Twitter account owners will be given a copy of their network logo which should be used as their Twitter profile picture.

See the latest trends here. These can be customised for your needs. For example, if you search for #healthandsafety you will see the latest trends on that topic.

Search for people and organisations here – follow who you think is of interest.

Easily navigate your way through with these buttons at the top:

Home – this will take you back to your homepage view.

Moments – directs you to a landing page showcasing all the top trends that day around the world.

Notifications – alerts you to your own updates i.e. new followers and retweets, comments or likes on your Tweets.

Messages – this is where you can send or receive direct messages that are not available to view by the public.

Send Tweets at any time here – this appears in both the profile view and the homepage view.

Edit your profile here –update your cover image, intro, location, website and theme colour.

Anything else you would like to edit can be changed by clicking here and selecting ‘settings and privacy’.

This is where you can change your username.

If you are setting up Twitter for your network, then we would suggest using IOSH in your username e.g.‘@IOSHnetworklocation’ so you are easily identifiable.

If you are using the Twitter app, you will also receive a notification to your mobile device.

When you edit your profile this is what you will update.

When you edit your profile you can update this text to say a little bit about your network.

Download the Twitter app from either the Apple app store or Google Play.

Once downloaded, sign into your account.

Select the profile you would like to receive notifications for and click the button.

You will now begin to receive Twitter notifications from that profile.
