  • 1. Induction Setting Targets In this lesson we will introduce you to setting targets which will enable you to plan your work and achieve your learning goals. Use your mouse or the arrow keys to move to the next slide.
  • 2. Induction As part of your learning journey with us, we will ask you to set targets in your Individual Learning Plan to help you keep track and complete your work. Targets will be reviewed as part of the tutorial programme on a regular basis Why do I need to set Targets?
  • 3. Induction To start this process off we ask you to think about targets being SMART. These lead to targets that are well formed and can be tracked through your ILP. Why do I need to set Targets?
  • 4. Induction A simple way to set a target is to make sure they are SMART. This stands for Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Timed Whats SMART?
  • 5. Induction If you set targets for yourself that are NOT SMART, you cant tell if youve succeeded or not. Lets face it you cant hit a target without knowing what and where the target is! Why?
  • 6. Induction I want to be rich. Have I succeeded if I find 1p in the street? What if I find 50p? How would I know if you were rich? An example of a POOR Target
  • 7. Induction I want to lose weight. Have I succeeded if I lose 2 grams? Have I succeeded if I lose a kilogram? What if it takes me 5 years to do it? Am I still successful? Another example of a POOR Target
  • 8. Induction Finish my assignment Have I succeeded if I didnt pass? Have I succeeded if it was below my target grade ? Have I succeeded if it was handed in late? Another example of a POOR Target
  • 9. Induction Lets look at what each letter stands for.... What does SMART mean?
  • 10. Induction Specific means that you have to say what you want to do, very clearly. S is for Specific
  • 11. Induction I want to lose weight is NOT specific. I want to lose 4 kilos is specific. Specific Targets..
  • 12. Induction I want finish my work is NOT specific. I want to complete module 2 outcome 4 is specific. Specific Targets..
  • 13. Induction Measurable targets tell you exactly what you need to do to succeed. I want to be able to run 800 metres, faster is NOT measurable. How much faster do I want to be able to go? M is for Measurable
  • 14. Induction I want to run 800 metres in 2.5 minutes is measurable. If I run 800 metres in 4 minutes, I know I havent succeeded yet! A Measurable Target
  • 15. Induction I want to record three tracks by 4:00pm today is measurable. If I have only recorded two tracks by 4:00pm, I know I havent succeeded yet! A Measurable Target
  • 16. Induction Im going to earn 3,000 by next week is probably NOT achievable unless your job is robbing banks! Neither is: I am going to run 800 metres in 2 seconds. A is for Achievable
  • 17. Induction An achievable target has to be something you can do. I am going to practice for 30 minutes every day this week is probably achievable for most people. An Achievable Target
  • 18. Induction If your target is too big it probably needs to be broken down into smaller targets I am going to learn all Jimi Hendrix songs this month is NOT achievable and could be broken down to 2 songs a month. An Achievable Target
  • 19. Induction What Im going to do to help me to get what I want. If I want to get fit, watching a TV infomercial will not help! R is for Relevant
  • 20. Induction It would be more useful and relevant to this target to go for a jog or swim at the gym. A Relevant Target
  • 21. Induction Thinking about doing your assignment is NOT the same as DOING IT ! A Relevant Target (neither is checking Facebook or Twitter #justsaying)
  • 22. Induction If I dont know how much time I have, I dont know when to take action. When does my work have to be completed? T is for Timed or Time-Bound
  • 23. Induction I want to be able to run 800 metres in 2.5 minutes by August 5th, this year is a timed target. Now I can arrange a training routine. A Timed Target
  • 24. Induction I want to have finished all my course work and achieved my asprirational grade by 31st May 2014. A Timed Target Now you can design a work plan based on your assesment sechedule
  • 25. Induction Targets should be: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant and Timed So remember...
  • 26. Induction The most important thing you remember from this short course is that you have Targets in Summary A TARGET An ACTION to follow and a DATE to complete it by
  • 27. Induction Now you have followed this presenation let us check you know how to set targets that lead to ACTION Please complete the quiz on the Induction Moodle Site. Now, lets check your learning!
