Meditation: Discipleship and the Cross

My brothers and sisters, Ordinary Time is a time to deepen the knowledge of our Christian faith. The readings this Sunday invite us to reflect about the reality of our discipleship. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to accept with love the experience he lived, that is to say, the experience of the Cross. Jesus became man to make the Kingdom of God known to the world. That was his mission, the mission of the apostles, and now it is also our mission, to continue announcing the Kingdom of God in the world through the witness of our life.

Today we read the gospel of Matthew. Chapter 10 is the Mission Discourse (or the Little Commission) Jesus calls twelve disciples and sends them on mission. He warns them it won’t be easy. “Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. But beware of people, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans” (Mt. 10: 16-18). In today’s passage, Jesus exhorts the apostles to not be afraid. “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.”

These verses refer back to the history of Israel, where most of the prophets were persecuted. Today we hear from Jeremiah, who was persecuted by his own friends. The point He’s making is that if the prophets suffered persecution, and Jesus suffered crucifixion, His disciples will be treated the same. Being a disciple of Jesus does not only involve the spiritual aspect but also the mission aspect. Jesus sends us into the world to proclaim that the Kingdom of God is among us. We have many testimonies of brothers and sisters in the history of the Church who have given their lives for the cause of Jesus. They believed in His project that offers eternal life as a prize. Jesus calls us to carry out the same mission.

As we meditate on our life of faith and discipleship, we realize that we have not really suffered persecution and slander because of our faith. Perhaps we have, and it may be that in your own family or among your own friends you are criticized for witnessing to your faith to them. For most of us, being a member of the Church is just coming to Mass on Sunday, fulfilling an obligation and that is all. However, being a disciple of Jesus means making His mission of proclaiming the Kingdom of God ours, and thus proclaim it in our family, at work and especially during this time of many social, political and religious challenges.

We realize that our times are changing and that

means that we also have to change our way of thinking, acting and living together within the family and in society. But we also see that there is fear of manifesting our Christian identity, of professing our faith publicly. The dangers and hard decisions that Jesus speaks of in this gospel are also present in our lives. We are learning what it means to suffer with Christ. We see that families are torn apart because of faith; that those who proclaim Jesus Christ as the only Lord are accused of inciting hatred. This was also the world of Jesus. He encountered opposition, persecution and death. We also find opposition for making the gospel of truth, love, justice and peace come alive.

However, Jesus asks us not to incite violence, when we expose evil, demanding change, He wants us to do it in a calm and organized way. This will be an authentic testimony. If we remain loyal to Christ, we are likely to encounter opposition, but we will be like Jesus in this aspect as well, because we share the same Cross He carried.

“Fear no one.” It is natural to be afraid when you are persecuted, but Jesus gives us three reasons not to fear. First, "Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed." Bad people like darkness, because in it they hide their bad works. They conspire in secret to twist what is good, but the Lord tells us that there is no secret “that will not be known." God does not allow evil to win. Second, "do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul." Our opponents may be able to kill the body, but have no power over the soul. Only God has power over our soul and eternal life. Third, fear not because you are worth more than the little birds. God cares about even the smallest little birds because they become a symbol of great value; with much more reason does he care about each of his sons and daughters because our value is the price of Christ's blood. We are so valuable that even the hairs on our heads are numbered. What a beautiful way of thinking about God!

Jesus ends by saying that whoever acknowledges Him before men, He will also acknowledge them before the “Heavenly Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father”.

Brothers and sisters, let us ask the Lord and the Holy Spirit to help us to be faithful in our discipleship and to bear witness to the presence of God in our lives even in the midst of the adversities of our time, and to take up the cross with love, joy and patience. Amen.

Estimados Hermanos y Hermanas,

René Álvarez a nuestra comunidad parroquial. Gracias.

D e l e s c r i t o r i o d e l P .

A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness

Signs of a Vocation to Priesthood

and Characteristics of a Good Candidate

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more

your priests, And those consecrated in the religious life. We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart.

Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them!

For information on becoming a Religious Priest Missionary of the Holy Spirit or a Diocesan Priest contact one of the following people: Serra Club: Arthur Adams

Priests: Fr. Jose Ugalde, M.Sp.S. Fr. Jesus Sanchez, M.Sp.S.

15. A good candidate for diocesan priesthood must show stability in lifestyle.

Priesthood is a lifetime commitment. The sacrament of Holy Orders imparts an indelible ontological mark on the soul which lasts forever. The Church needs priests who will go where they are assigned and remain there – at their battle station, so to speak – taking care of God’s people. Walker Percy, the great Catholic writer, once wrote of the parish priest: “He is one of the heroes of the modern age.” He could see the priest standing at his battle station on the front lines, faithfully fighting for Christ and his people against the onslaught of the world, the flesh, and the devil. He could see priests blessing and strengthening people through preaching, teaching, and the sacraments.

If a man changes jobs, locations, and parishes very often, without any good reason, this is a concern. If he does these things and then tries to justify them by blaming the boss or the pastor everything and everyone except himself – this is a sign that he will be unable to commit to the life of a diocesan priest.

I remember hearing a young man who had been to five different colleges in five years. He still had not graduated. When asked about this, he went into a long, unsatisfactory explanation. The bottom line was that he could not be still. His vocation director explained that seminary was six years

in the same place and priesthood required even more stability. The diocese needed some evidence that he could stay put that long. He was asked to come back (with his college degree intact) when he could show that he had lived in the same place, doing the same thing, for at least two years. He never returned.

The people of God need pastors, they need shepherds. They need and deserve a father who will be dependable, loving. strong, and present. The world is unstable and there are many people who are not dependable and trustworthy. A priest must be like a rock.

A good candidate for priesthood cannot have wanderlust. I sometimes hear people speak about their priest, saying, “He’s never here. He is always leading a pilgrimage here or doing a retreat there. It seems he is always doing good things in other places, but we need a priest here, with us, to stay put and take care of us day in and day out.” Diocesan priests must do what they need to do and what they promised to do, not just what they want to do.

Developing this virtue of stability can certainly be done

but it must be substantially present prior to beginning

seminary studies.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 06/21/2020 | SETON Sunday News | 9

Dear brothers and sisters,

My name is Father Manuel Rosiles, MSpS. As you know, my superiors have asked me to be part of this parish as a parochial Vicar to provide spiritual care to this parish community. I embrace this opportunity with faith and great joy because I know that the Lord always blesses us in each experience he gives us, and I am sure that this experience will not be the exception.

Allow me to introduce myself so that you know who I am and little by little, as you know me and as I get to know you, we continue building this great community.

I was born in the state of Michoacan in Mexico on January 6th 1979. My parents are Jose Rosiles and Evangelina Gonzalez (r.i.p.). I am the youngest of nine siblings. I first came to the U.S. when I was a teenager, and my dream was to work for some time, save some money and then go back to my country to study. This was my plan, but God had a different plan for me. Here in the U.S., specifically in Illinois, I got involved in some ministries in the parish I was attending, and God guided me all the way to priesthood.

In 2003, I joined the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. My formation to the priesthood lasted 12 years, and in 2015, by the mercy and grace of God, I was ordained to the priesthood. After my ordination I was assigned to Saint Matthew Parish in Hillsboro, OR and I was there for nine months only. In July of 2016 I was assigned to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Oxnard, CA. I was there for four years, and now the Lord has sent me to this parish, which is very dear to my heart.

Most likely, for some of you I am not an unfamiliar face here in the parish. I also have to tell you that neither the parish nor many of you are stranger to me. Let me share with you why. After the MSpS took over the administration of this parish I had the opportunity to visit in several occasions. Also, when I was a seminarian during the 2012-2013 school year I had the opportunity to do my pastoral year in this parish. Later on, on September 19 th 2015, God gave me one of the greatest gifts I have received in my life. On this date I received the sacrament of Holy Orders here in this parish. For this reason this parish has been, and forever will be, very important for me. I am so grateful to God for giving me this opportunity of returning to this parish to do ministry as a priest.

I am sure the Lord will give us many opportunities to know each other more and to share our faith, our time, and talents. For now I would like to express my thanksgiving to the Lord for giving me the opportunity to live out my priesthood with you. Please be patient with my shortcomings, and be assured that I am here to serve you, as a priest, to the best of my ability.

I would like to finish by sharing with you that the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit who are doing ministry in the U.S. have just began a new journey in our mission. We have expressed this new journey with this slogan: “United in the heart of Jesus, forming God’s priestly people.” I pray to God that you and I, united in the heart of Jesus, may achieve this goal of forming his priestly people.

Please know that I am here for you!

Father Manuel Rosiles, MSpS

Estimados hermanos,

unos ahorros, y regresar a mi país a estudiar.

Padre Manuel Rosiles, MSpS

As we all know, the “social distancing” practices and suspension of gathering for Mass have created unique challenges to the way we practice our faith.

Nothing is more important than all of us taking the necessary steps to protect and ensure the health and well-being of our families, friends, neighbors, as well as our parish.

Although we are physically separated from the Eucharist---our church is alive and still on mission.

This year our parish share of the Appeal is $151,672. If we exceed this goal, all excess payments received will come back to us and we will put that towards recovery of lost offertory donations.

In addition, this year 10% of all the funds collected through the ACA (excluding our rebate) will be placed into a special Parish Solidarity Fund at the Archdiocese.

In this way, your donations will help us, but will also help other parishes recover.

The reality is that many of your fellow parishioners may not be able to participate this year, so your support is more important than ever.

Be assured of my gratitude for your gift –whatever the amount— and of my continuing prayers for you and your loved ones!

Fr. Jose Ugalde MSpS

The 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway, and we are

seeking everyone’s participation this year so that we reach

our goal of $151,672.

All contributions received in excess of this Archdiocesan

goal will come directly back to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as a

rebate.

Our 2020 ACA rebate goal will be used for lost offertory

donations.

If you gave to the Appeal last year, I ask you to consider

increasing your gift by 5% this year. If you are not sure

what to give, would you consider a gift of $365 ($1 per

day) ?

Because of the current situation, we have three simple

ways to for you to donate:
