THE POPE CAN’T TEACH HERESY: Some of my students have asked about an item on the Internet about a group of Catholics accusing Pope Francis of heresy. I tell the students that a Pope can never teach heresy. Jesus promised that the Gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church in the specific context of appointing Peter as head of the Church. Jesus said to Peter, “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven.” At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus says, “Behold I am with you all days, even to the end of the world.” To say that a Pope could teach heresy is to make Jesus a liar, which is an absolute impossibility. Popes can sin, Popes can be imprudent, Popes can make serious mistakes, but a Pope can never teach heresy. Never. Two thousand years of Church history provide historical confirmation of this doc-trinal truth. For a longer discussion of this issue, I recommend the following article by Dr. Jeffrey Mirus on catholiccul-ture.org: www.catholicculture.org/commentary/articles.cfm?id=729
