fowler junctionCentered around a speculative rail station serving a commuter train from Athens, GA to Atlanta, GA, this design for a mixed use commu-nity utilizes the rich history of the site, which features abandoned rail depot and industrial complex. The design also employs contextual cues from the surrounding commu-nity and its historic street layout and character, seamlessly connect-ing with the existing urban fabric. A variety of uses are present the site, all of which feature design charac-teristics that emphasize walkability and increased interaction among res-idents, creating a community that is livable, functional, and enjoyable. sketchup model

Designed with a focus on functionality without sacrificing aesthetics, the plan for the landscape surround ing this 5500 ft2 house draws inspiration from other Antebellum homes in the area. Located on the historic Milledge Avenue in Athens, GA, the site plan satisfies the client’s needs, such as private parking areas for guests, large entertainment space, pool, private garden, and areas for service and storage.

The design for this site, adjacent to the state-of-the-art Paul D Cov-erdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences, would provide this area of campus with greenspace that it currently lacks. The site is designed for informal student use as well as formal gatherings such as guest speakers and graduation lun-cheons. The plan features spaces ranging from large plazas conducive to social interaction to smaller, more private areas intended for secluded studying, all intended to serve the large number of students, faculty, and visitors that frequent this space.

Given an entire city block, we were asked to develop a plan for an infill housing community that allowed for at least eight homes-ites, along with a greenspace with amenities to be used by residents. Through a simple design that uti-lizes alleys and home design with compact floor plans, the site was able to support sixteen homes and a large central greenspace, while still allowing for private lawns and gardens for each residence. Most importantly, the design takes inspiration from the surrounding urban fabric, essential to infill housing design.

As part of the 9th annual Park Pride design com-petition, entrants were given a 13.3 acre site and asked to design a park to serve residents within a seven mile radius located in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The site features a 6 acre pond, little to no topography change, and minimal vegetation save for a wooded knoll located on the Southern edge of the tract. Our design is rather ambigous from a financial standpoint, however very func-
tional and sustainable. The design requirements called for at least 100 parking spaces, so instead of building a traditional parking lot, we decided to incorporate an underground parking structure with a green roof to minimize impervious surfaces and maximize greenspace. The design also features spaces informed by dynamic shapes and lines, creating a park that is visually conducive to action and creativity, while maintaining functionality.
